I've been here several times and have never been upset with an order but today I went in with my mother in law and she was craving the donut sandwich only to be told they were out of donuts. #400! I saved a good one for this landmark, the cheesiest spot I've been to outside of a good French market. Cheesewala of course! They specialize in comfort food, but quite unlike your mothers, they manage not to burn the outer crusts on the grilled cheese sandwiches. Redlands has come a long way from being a sleeper town that closed down by 8pm. Now it's almost as good as Claremont, but pulled down slightly by the demographics I suspect. Nevertheless, some important start-ups have emanated from here, such as Augie's Coffee, A la Minute ice creamery, and now Cheesewala, located off an alley near State Street and Orange downtown. The menu is small but the offerings are atypical. The BBQ Mac and Cheese sandwich? Definitely check that out! The sweet and savory (outside in) grilled glazed donut with cheddar is a must try too. Anyhow, my sister kept me waiting, and waiting, and waiting... so I got acquainted with the adorable Jordan who was wearing the same Led Zeppelin T-shirt I was, so nice going young lady! She was kind to give me water while I waited and tipped me off on her favorites. The Samosa grilled cheese sounds like my next meal there. This place is a hidden treat in the heart of downtown Redlands. It's easy to get lost finding it because it's located inside the building hall next to à la minute. There's also an entrance by the back alley of the building as well. Lines can be long especially on the weekends. The menu is limited, but the selection is delicious. Ordered the Jalapeno Popper sandwich (7.95) and made it a combo with side and drink (2.99), and Loaded Baked Potato sandwich (7.95). They were very busy the day we came so we waited around 10-15 mins for our number to be called. The number system is a bit annoying since if you're sitting at a table in the building, you constantly have to go back into Cheesewalla to check if your number has been called. The food, however, was delicious and I wanted more of it. The Jalapeno Popper was put on jalapeno cheese bread and consisted of cheddar, pepperjack, jalapeno cream cheese, roasted jalapeno and bacon. As you can see, there's no shortage of cheese. Each bite was more flavorful than the last. The cream cheese added a smooth creaminess to the crunchy jalapeno bread. The cheddar and pepper jack were buttery and not too heavy. I only wish there was more for the price paid. The taters were just as what you'd expect- crunchy goodness. The Loaded Baked Potato had cheddar, monterey jack, potato, bacon, sour cream and green onion on sourdough. This was also delicious because of the blend of cheeses mixed with cool sour cream and having a nice bacon crunch. However, I felt the potato took away from the sandwich. Parking is on the street so you may have to walk a block or two to get here. read more

There are two discreet entrances to the location, the first is on Orange Street Alley, also known as Umbrella Alley, and the second is connected to a communal building. Would I return? Mostly not bc I don't live in that area and I wasn't aware that San Bernardino County has lifted their mask restriction so no one is wearing a mask or gloves in the food business. Overall, the people walking by are wearing masks but the employees of restaurants and coffee shops in this downtown area are not nor are they social distancing tables. Also, idk if this a Redlands thing but this place and another cafe I ordered from--the employees don't come off as friendly. They are monotonous and doesn't really feel like customer service is part of a strategy to bring customers back and turn them into regulars. Even if food is alright, friendliness is what brings me back to support a business. Plus, they just handed us the to-go while others got their food in bags and we had to ask for a bag and they didn't even offer forks or napkins. I didn't want to go back and ask for forks bc I felt like I was a bother even tho I don't think we should have to feel guilty over something like that. Other customers had to go back and ask for napkins and bc they seem pretty busy, they seem like they can't be troubled to help out. Maybe bc they're busy, they forgot?
