Stopped in today to test out this new and trendy stop downtown. Loved the vibe and decor and the service was very good... until it took 20 minutes to serve us two grilled cheese sandwiches. They had a board displaying the wait time which they said was 5-10 minutes, but like I said it was much longer. It was worth the wait today but not on a day when I'm in a hurry. Citrus Ave), between A Shop Called quest (comic book shop) and à la minute (ice cream shop). Seating (metal tables) inside building AND in the alley, which is actually very nice to have options. Very affordable, not cheap like Baker's but not overpriced as housing. I believe they use square (or something similar). Service is quick but made to order. Sides are tater tots and an excellent tomato soup (recommend the basil tomato). While I really enjoy the grilled cheese, at some point these stopped being grilled cheese and became a panini; fair amount of options with plenty of fillings (one might say too many). Really two key things in a grilled cheese right, the bread and the cheese. Bread was crispy while not being burnt. The cheese was sufficiently melted and gooey. read more

Cheesewalla is tucked away in the newly renovated alleyway in downtown Redlands. Their storefront is located inside of the building that Comic Quest is attached to. I have been waiting for Cheesewalla to open an actual location forever! The menu is pretty straight forward, they have plain sandwiches, fancy sandwiches and some that I would have never even considered. My personal favorite and the sandwich that I always get is the Jalapeno popper grilled cheese, I get it with no bacon, extra jalapenos and a side of their tots. The quality of food is always consistent and the employees are all very polite. The reason for the 4-star review is their timing. Even when the restaurant is not busy the food still takes quite awhile to be done. They have a chalkboard in the front that tells you how long the wait is and it is usually about 10 minutes off. Okay so I have to preface this review with I fully support this business and think it's a clever idea with so much potential!! Love the location, you can get to it through the alley (with the fabulous mural decor) or from the green doors on citrus. The atmosphere is casual, clean, up beat and friendly. I've been twice and have really enjoyed it! Side note, my boyfriend is Indian and he says that he grew up eating samosa-like sandwiches and this is what Cheesewalla does really well!! My favorite by far is the samosa grilled cheese. It has lots of flavor, the perfect amount of cheese and all the sauces add interesting flavor and dimension. Love it. I have two suggestions: the tomato basil bisque is too salty. I've had it twice, thinking maybe I got a salty serving the first time. It was salty the second time and maybe a little too heavy for a bisque, considering it's meant to accompany a grilled cheese sandwich. It would be nice to have a lighter side option. My second suggestion is the artichoke and spinach grilled cheese needs another flavor dimension, perhaps a garlic aioli. There's quite a bit of cheese in it, which is to be expected with grilled cheese (duh). However the flavor shouldn't be lacking just because there's a lot of cheese. So I've been waiting for the hype around this place to settle down a bit.. I think its been 2 weeks since they opened, so I picked a random work day to visit over lunch. The food is as good as it was at the Thu Market here, months ago. Their concept is very interesting- 'where comfort meets creativity'! I'm excited to see something new in the area but I was let down by the long wait (almost 15mins) to place your order & the ordering style - You have to get in queue inside the restaurant, since seating is essentially in the outdoor alley & in the lobby of the building, near the elevator - hmm not a fan of the indoor seating area when you have the ordering queue going right past you! Once you've ordered though, your food is ready pretty quick & its delicious!!! Well worth the wait, if you're not in a hurry! While in queue, I got the sense that the BBQ Mac, Samosa & Jalapeno Popper sandwiches are the fan favorites, while the PBJ didn't deliver, for some reason. I tried the tomato basil bisque - a bit sweet, but ok. I'd add more options to the menu like - chicken tikka, falafel & nutella (w/banana, oooh)! I'm giving them only 3 stars, mainly because of the wait and location/setting. These aspects fixed, I think they have some major breakthrough potential in the Redlands restaurant scene! We were so excited to try this new place that it was one of my requests for Mother's Day. The place itself is adorable and very "hipster" - loved the alley seating! It was very hard to find though. We had to drive around the block 3 times before seeing a small sign outside that read "Cheesewalla line forms inside" when we finally parked and got out to walk around to find it. Then it was located in the back of the building without any directional signs. The chalkboard menu was great and the selection was perfect! However, the way to know what each item included was to ask about each and every one. They had 4 people in the kitchen from what could be seen and one young lady working the front. The young lady at the front was very nice BUT she needed help. She was taking orders (including having to explain what was included with each selection), refilling drinks, calling out orders, answering the phone, helping in the kitchen, and restocking supplies. My biggest complaint was after waiting in line, we got to the front and were told that the kitchen was behind and they weren't taking any more orders for a bit and she left to go help out in the kitchen and restock supplies. Not exactly the experience we waited in line for. The little boxes that the sandwiches came in were very cute! The sandwiches had a nice brown grill to the outside. we stood right outside the window and got our order as soon as it was done, yet it was cold inside and the cheese wasn't completely melted. My husband's order of the Buffalo Chicken had chicken in the middle and that was IT! We each finished half and then opted to take it home and reheat them. From what we could tell, they were using a kitchen torch to toast the bread and must not have had them on the grill long enough to heat the sandwich all the way through. I have to say for $8 - I expect the cheese to be melted and the order hot. All and all, we agreed that they have only been open a short time and we would love to see some of these kinks worked out. If so, we think they will continue to be successful. For now, we'll hold off on going back and let them get settled. Also, $8 for just the sandwich seems kinda steep. We spent $22 for 2 sandwiches with 2 drinks - no sides. I could see if it was for a combo or included the drink, but a bit pricey. We are pulling for the business and hope them many successful years to come!! read more

The ambience of the back alley is super rad. You sit under umbrellas.
