It is with some measure of disappointment that I visited and write a review for Cheesy J's. Based on their menu and my love of crispy toasty cheesy sandwiches, I had fairly high hopes, despite the fairly mediocre Yelp ratings. But I'm afraid I need to confirm that my hopes were unjustified. First, some good bits. The staff was super friendly and helpful, though with an establishment (like this) where you stand in line and order at the counter, staff quality doesn't enter as much into the overall impression of a place as with a sit-down full-service establishment. As senior citizens, we got a 15% discount, which is a substantially larger discount than we generally see for seniors. The pickles were pretty good. My wife said that her pickles were the best part of her meal. For me, the pickles and the cream soda were kinda tied for goodness. The washroom was pretty clean. The eating area was nicely set up and I didn't notice any un-bussed tables (though it appears that diners are expected to bus their own tables, which I did). And now, the rest. My wife had The Dip, Wet. First, we were a bit confused that ordering "Wet" meant that they would put the Jus on in the process of constructing the sandwich, rather than providing Jus with the sandwich for dipping. But the staff was happy to provide a container of Jus. She found the sandwich overall to be sufficiently "meh" that she asked me whether I really wanted to take the leftover half sandwich home. I thought that since it wasn't actively bad, I'd go ahead and finish it later. I had Cheesy Brisket. I thought it was kinda OK, though the meat was not nearly as tender as I expect from a brisket dish. (My first bite, I couldn't fully bite off a piece of the brisket, so the entire slice slid out of the sandwich.) My wife thought that the meat tasted bad. I thought that the taste was OK; it was just that it could have stood some additional cooking time to get tender. Oh, the best part of the sandwich was the crispy cheesy bits around the edge. Both came with a "taste" or sample of their tomato soup. This was useful, as we both now know that we would not be happy buying the tomato soup. I don't think that it is Campbell's, but I think that the quality of taste is comparable. My wife had the combo with a side of cole slaw which was not horrible, but she didn't eat very much of it. I had the combo with a side of Mac & Cheese. For me, freezer section Mac & Cheese from Stouffer's is pretty good and I give it a solid 3 stars. And, for me, the Kraft box with the orange powder is a solid 1 star. This was somewhere in between. I had a few bites of it, but it wasn't worth eating or taking home to eat later. Their drinks are mostly Pepsi products, plus Iced Tea (sweet and non-sweet). I started off with unsweet tea, which I found to taste a bit odd and weak. So I dumped it out and got the cream soda, which was pretty good. In summary, while Cheesy J's is not actively bad, I don't see myself choosing to return. P.S. I didn't notice until I got home that the menu they gave me does not have all of their sides listed. Not sure whether anything else might be missing. P.P.S. I didn't notice until later that I was charged $1.16 for "Advantage Program". Unsure what this is, as I didn't order it. read more

Customer service was stellar when I visited. It was well lit and there's a mix of seating perfect for catching up with friends or relaxing with family. I appreciated the amount of cheese oozing out of my sandwich and the burst of flavor from my Rajin Cajun. My family member was equally satisfied with the brisket. You get picked and a little cup of tomato concoction for dipping. The sweet potato fries had a nice buttery taste and comes with a sweet icing (but doesn't need it). DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY. $37 dollars for two sandwiches WTF!?!? The wife and I decided to try this place and we will NEVER go back. Let's start with not being acknowledged when we walked in. The gal at the register had trouble making eye contact and it was a very bizarre interaction. Ordered two sandwiches, two fountain drinks, and an order of fries. The bread on the sandwich was way overcooked and the fries tasted heated up in the microwave (not fried). They were completely inedible. I wanted to try this restaurant since it had just opened and I love grilled cheese. Walked in, no one greeted me. Stood at the register for 8 minutes. 3 employees were working less than 2 feet away from me, never acknowledged me or even apologized for the wait. Never even made eye contact. This is mine and my husband's first time at Cheesy J's, located at 2305 Madison St, Clarksville, TN 37043. I had half a grilled cheese (American) sandwich and cheddar broccoli soup (the only soup they had available when we ordered). The sandwich was delicious but the soup was water. Not edible at all. My husband had the Gobbler sandwich and also has the same soup. His sandwich was also delicious but again soup was nothing but water. Inedible, the soup should not have been offered or served. In addition to that it seemed that the staff was just standing around the register chatting and only one young lady out in eating area cleaning up tables and picking up. I also saw her sweeping while the others just stood around. Lastly as we were leaving an employee or manager (not sure which) was counting out the register till (cash) out in the open where everyone could see, not secure at all. If we go back and that's a big if, we would only order a sandwich. The staff seemed young and very unprofessional for being in a service industry. Took the grandchildren to Chessy J's and was so excited about the variety on the menu. My daughter had the brisket grilled cheese with blackberry jam and it was fantastic. The grandchildren stuck with the classic grilled cheese and tomato soup. They loved the soup and the sandwich, which is unheard of with them. I had the roast beef grilled cheese, and it was so tender and delicious. The owner was extremely helpful and offered samples. It is definitely going to be part of our rotation. read more

Was is terrible? No. Was it great? No. I see the vision but execution is not there yet. I realize it is brand new and there will be kinks with any brand new place. The bread was in pieces so it wasn't really a sandwich. Had to eat with a fork. Taste was good on the sandwich. The sample of soup was not good. I order their "cheesy of the day" which was a... Dang! I forgot. Something with dill and turkey. My side was the sweet potato fries with some dip I've never seen. I also ordered a strawberry-sumn slushy. The slush was terrible. But I'm an adult and don't care about slushies anyways. The SP fries were they best I've ever had and the sauce was different to me. Food was just OK, tomato soup was very watery. There was 1 couple in the store when I arrived, then I ordered, had to wait 20 minutes for my grilled cheese sandwich. Worst of all I observed constantly the 2 cooks wearing the same gloves going from the food, to work on the cash register to going into the back and handling food without ever changing gloves. When I mentioned this to the owner I was told we've only been open 5 days and they're young. If you are an owner it's up to you to train and monitor them not your customers. Probably the worst food experience we have ever had in Clarksville. You have to try really hard to news up grilled cheese and soup. So props for going above and beyond at complete failure on both. The sandwiches were not bad. we had curly fries because they did not have potato wedges and the curly fries were not fresh at all. We threw them in the trash. The tomato soup had a good flavor, but it was the consistency of water. It obviously had too much water added to it. When we came in every table was dirty. I counted 6 people working 4 behind the counter on their cell phones, one lady and one man , looked like they may be managers were sitting at the only large table in that area also on their cell phones. This is a new place, and were excited to see them open. We tried the pimento (memento) and the cheesy senior grilled cheese sandwiches. Both were delicious. Each sandwich cups with a pickle spear and a side of tomato soup for dipping. Despite just opening, the food came out hot and fast.
