The egg rolls were frozen, the dumplings were fake, the lo mein was slimy, maybe the pork friend rice was the best thing they had going for them but even that didn't even have any flavor to it. I have been going to Chef Leu's for over 25 years and I can honestly say its the best Asian food in Chittenden County. I have NEVER had a bad meal or a bad customer experience. Their food is timely and affordable. I love their crab rangoon, sesame chicken, and chicken lo-mein. As i got older I started eating their sushi which I love as well. They have delicious sushi specials. I love going there for lunch and dinner. The restaurant is cozy and it's fun to sit at the bar and get a cocktail. I'm sad that they are not currently offering dine-in. I used to live in Shelburne but now live in Burlington so I don't go there as often as I wish. I feel like if they opened a location in Burlington, they would do really well. I'm sort of shocked to see so many negative reviews. People who live in Shelburne and have been going to Chef Leu's for years know they are a great spot. I will be curious if anything changes under the new ownership. Hopefully not! read more

I ordered take out and it was excellent! Great quality sushi. I had yellow tail which was uniform in color and moisture, obviously freshly prepared, just as you'd expect. No shortcuts for volume sake and nothing "border line fresh." Miso soup was perfectly balanced, not to salty, salad was crisp and fresh. We went here on New Year's Eve. We were in town for a wedding. Only a 10 minute wait, an hour before closing with no reservations. Our meal was delicious and very reasonable. We started with the chefs special soup for two. Came with enough for two bowls for each of the two of us. My partner had chefs special crispy shrimp with red sauce which was declared very good. I had the mango shrimp which was the right mix of sweetness from the mango. Both meals included a larger than average amount of shrimp which was prepared perfectly. Torn between a 3 and 4, and the shrimp lo mein is what's tipping it to a 4 - super tasty, just the right amount of greasy. The chicken and broccoli though was pretty disappointing - clear watery sauce rather than the brown sauce that's typical with chicken and broccoli, and the broccoli was very mushy. We made the mistake of ordering from Chef Leu's this afternoon since our regular go to places were closed. I even noted that it was my mothers 65th birthday hoping to inspire the cook a bit. The food was tasteless, extremely greasy and the Buddha's Delight so unappealing to even look at, with soggy spongy tofu, one kind of mushroom (the dish boasted a variety of Chinese mushrooms) which was like chewing rubber. The sauce was thin and nothing to offset the dull green color of the dish. The spring rolls oozed grease and reheating them did not bring back any crispness. To top it off the prices was several dollars more than we normally pay elsewhere with the preparation and quality being far less. I just paid $20 for the worst Chinese food I've ever had. I am neither a snob or unreasonable. I have dined in both upscale and not in Chinatown in DC, NYC and Boston. I've had mall food better than this. Hot and Sour soup was mostly sour and had more unidentifiable vegetables than those you could. The "crispy noodles" which are not included and cost extra were soggy and stale. My chicken satay was a pile of mush. Overcooked vegetables that were mushy and drowning in a watery sauce. Although spicy as desired, completely lacking flavor. I ate very little and tossed the rest in the garbage. I cannot believe this restaurant has 5 stars when there are so many places in Burlington from which to choose. The menu in general was overpriced for casual dining- $4.20 for an egg roll?! Yikes. Man, I hate writing bad reviews, but this one is totally deserved. The good: -Polite hostess and waitress -The tap water The bad: -Food was inedible. Just shockingly inedible. Sesame tofu was clearly previously frozen. It was tough and spongy and flavored only by the orange-ish sweet sauce it was smothered in. Pad Thai was (shaking my head as I type this) a fishy, rancid, smelly pile of rice noodles with some bean sprouts on the side. My significant other said the chicken in his was soggy (how is that even possible?) The boiled dumplings were a gummy mass that enveloped what looked like some sort of unidentifiable meat link. We left having barely eaten anything. We were asked if we wanted to-go containers. "No, we're good" was all I could muster. Dear GOD, the thought of that sitting in my car and then being reheated in the microwave at my house was more than I could handle. Not fresh, AT ALL. Not well prepared AT ALL. Clearly whoever compared this place to A Single Pebble, which is one of my favorite restaurants, was being paid, is an employee, or is a member of the owner's family because that comparison is absolutely sacrilegious and absurd. This review is based on the Peking duck alone. I'm not a big fan of the rest of the menu. I will say this is the best Chinese restaurant in the Burlington area next to A Single Pebble. The menu is geared towards Chinese American food rather than authentic Chinese. I haven't found another place that sells Peking duck and I used to order half of it then pick it up. The price is not cheap as a whole one will cost you a good penny but half isn't that bad. It comes with wrappers and green onions. The duck tastes fresh and also conveniently cut for you so it's easy to eat. Don't expect the duck to be too authentic either, but given that I'm not from Beijing, it was good for me. Besides the food, I do like the ambience of the place. It's small and comfortable. A Chinese family friend actually recommended it. I recommend skipping the rest of the meal and going for the delicious Peking duck. They also have a roasted duck option which I've never tried but always wanted to. read more

There was a loud sound like a bell when I entered so they could not miss my entrance. There was a guy at the bar. There was a few tables. We were staying at a hotel nearby and the front desk recommended this place. I was craving Chinese food and thought to give it a try. I ordered Foo Young and hubby ordered Pad Thai. My shrimp foo young came in three big pieces to my delight. But I was so disappointed. It's all flour, onion and maybe 2-3 pcs of shrimp. The sauce was like sweet and sour sauce! Way too sweet actually. No peanut sauce at all. We just came out of town and I felt so bad having that kind of food. My husband was not happy with his pad thai either. Service was very slow, poorly paced and inattentive: my dinner (a sushi order) came with a tasteless soup and a iceberg lettuce salad featuring little more than iceberg lettuce. That was served to me before the appetizers. We ordered two pu-pu platters. They were comprised of heavily-fat laden and foods, including massive chicken wings that appeared to have been recycled through multiple other dinings, as they were bone dry. Dinner started with two of us being served initially, only to have the rest of the meals served twenty minutes later. No kidding. My husband and I were in the Burlington area for the weekend and Chef Leu's was right down the street from our hotel. We decided to check the place out after our concierge recommended it. The ambience inside the restaurant was very cozy and welcoming, and service was friendly and quick. Our waitress was more than willing to accommodate my husband when he asked for egg drop/wonton soup, even though it wasn't on the menu. My hot and sour soup was delicious and the broth was a perfect consistency. It was just what my throat needed, since I was fighting off a cold at the time. For our entrees, I ordered shrimp with garlic sauce and my husband got chicken and broccoli. The garlic sauce on my meal had an excellent flavor, but my husband was even more thrilled with his sauce, which was white, rather than the typical brown. He said the taste reminded him of a Chinese restaurant he used to visit as a kid in New Jersey. That place is no longer in business and my husband says he's never found Chinese food that compared to its quality...until now. The only disappointment about our Chef Leu's meal is that we live 5 hours away from Burlington and can't easily go back whenever we want. Who knew we'd have to go all the way to Vermont to find such delicious Chinese food, when there are so many Asian restaurants right in our own backyard?! If you live in Shelburne it's a lot fast to come and get sushi than driving all the way to Koto's and their prices are reasonable and they are really good.
