Hop sing no good no more! Three times the food has been below what we are use to. Not flavorful at all. With your combo you gey a free soda before you had a choice of Brand name soda now u get second rate soda which is discusting ( diet cola and gingerale) the prices are riduculous will stop going. My son and I are in the process of visiting every Chinese restaurant in Chittenden County. We always order the same thing. I order a chicken and broccoli combo with pork fried rice and an egg roll. My son orders a sesame chicken combo with pork fried rice and beef teriyaki sticks. Price: $18.04 or $.25/oz which is about average for Chittenden County. Portion: 4.7lbs between the two meals is a bit more generous than average. Pros: High traffic convenient location near Lowes on Susie Wilson Rd. Fifteen minute turnaround from order to pickup. Newer microwavable trays. Full size egg role Cons: Food flavor was average at best. The pork fried rice was a bit salty, dry and lacked flavor. Do not order online! I did and it messed up my order. Tried to call to have it corrected and they yelled at ME! That I ordered the pancake as my appetizer when I definitely hit egg roll! Why not admit the mistake and make your customer happy! Why yell at the one to at paid for their food. Disappointed! Wish they would learn English so they can better understand their customers. The dumplings here are addicting. They're big and delicious for the price. The fried rice is so delicious. I didn't like the chicken and cashews with the steamed rice. I don't get anything else because their dumplings and fried rice are perfect! I could eat them once a week! My daughter brought some food from this spot a few weeks back and we thought it was pretty good. She gave us their menu so we could call in orders and pick them up on the way home. The first time we tried that, the person who answered the phone spoke no English whatsoever. No matter how slowly or clearly we spoke, there was no way to communicate what we wanted to order. Now don't get me wrong...I strongly support legal immigration and welcome any and all to our community. But until you learn to speak the language, do not attempt to take on a publicly facing job. And if you want to run a restaurant that advertises call-in orders, make sure the person who answers the phone can take the order. read more

My husband, the native Vermonter, used to visit this spot 'back in the day' when it was Anthony's italian, and was glad to see the 'new' restaurant that took over have great food as well. We heard good things about this place from a local food group, and figured we'd give it a go to replace our usual americanized chinese buffet outing meal - (Pouring one out for Tian Fu & Grand.) While Hop's didn't have my husband's favorite fried zucchini or clam dish, their General Tso platter did not disappoint. Large portions of chicken, and pork fried rice (made with the boneless spareribs) = one platter could be enough for 2 people to eat at a great price! We also tried their crab rangoon, which was very tasty and definately recommend. They give you a container (about 2 tbsp size) of sweet and sour and a fortune cookie for each platter ordered, but we found there was plenty of sauce included with the General Tso to use as dipping sauce as well. They take orders by phone, and on a Saturday around 1-2pm, it took about 15-20 min for picking up. No inside seating, take-out only. We'll definitely be heading back! read more

Decent American-Chinese food at a really affordable price. I would actually give this place 3.5 stars. Portions are very, very generous. For the best value, I highly recommend ordering one of their combination meals, which are less than $8 after tax, and served all day. This a no frills kind of place, just a few tables and chairs, so they do mostly take-out orders. Overall food is good, but the prices are even better. I ordered two orders of sesame chicken with WHITE RICE, got it home and noticed they gave us pork fried rice. I called to tell them I wanted what we ordered as we do not eat PORK!!! And she proceeded to yell at me and tell me I ordered pork fried rice and I could come look at the receipt but I wasn't getting what I ordered. I also paid for a large thing of duck sauce for 2.50 and didn't get that either. This place is joke, the women are rude and their food is disgusting. read more

Hop Sing! I have not had any food from you in a LONG time until last night. Take out was great! Hop Sing is a great Chinese food stop in Essex Jct. It's locally owned and the family is very friendly! While at the same time serving up some great food at a more than fair price. Last night I got an order of the General Tso's chicken with pork fried rice and crab rangoons! Everything came out cooked perfectly! You also may wanna note that the portions from here are HUGE! So you will be left full. The prices are more than fair. A simple combo meal will run you about $8 or so. Like I said above the portions are pretty generous. So over all Hop Sing is a great place to order out from. They come highly recommended by me! My only complaint here really is I wish they had a better sit in restaurant. Maybe they will expand one day! But my review is ONLY about ordering out as that is the norm of this location. read more

I thought New York had the best Chinese food. Nope. Vermont does. My family and I got a few different things on the menu, and every single thing we had was DELICIOUS. If Hop Sing was closer to Burlington, this would be my new go-to restaurant for Chinese takeout. The food is cheap and the portions are relatively big. Most of the combination lunch and dinner specials are $5-6, which includes an entree, rice, and a choice of an appetizer. The steamed dumplings here were pretty decent. The scallion pancakes would have been great if they were pan-fried rather than deep-fried. For some reason, Chinese takeout can never get any regional cuisine correct. Szechuan beef is never what it should taste like because it is always devoid of any hot peppers. Also pass on the salty lo mein and the not so hot and sour soup. But, compared to Lee's in South Burlington, the fried rice is a lot better and the greasy feel of the food is kept to a minimum. After living here for the past two years, I now understand the difference between Chinese and Chinese takeout. It's analogous to comparing Moe's to Mexican food. read more

Used to order here regularly but since moved out of town. Ordered tonight on my way through town but when I got home, all the chicken was under cooked and still pink inside. I order General Tso chicken and Sesame chicken with both ordered undercooked. I called the restaurant to tell them and was told "I can't believe that" and then was hung up on. I called back and said I'd like a refund after spending over $30 on food we can't eat. I offered to take pictures of the food as proof. Tried Hop Sing for the first time after seeing good reviews. Guess I went there on the wrong evening! Food was just simply subpar at best and we were overcharged! Thought the bill was a little high, but foolishly I didn't question it when checking out. Once home I looked up all the prices and was overcharged by about 24%. The customer service is great. I believe it's a family run shop. It's definitely Americanized "Chinese food". The flavors of each dish have deteriorated in the 3 years I've been occasionally buying. Like, the crab rangoons have lost all substance and flavor within the past year or so. Shrimp dishes are small prawn that don't seem fresh at all. Soups are decent. It's enough to satisfy a hankerin' for Chinese but it's certainly not something to write home about. You get what you pay for; sometimes a lil more, sometimes a lol less. :-/ read more

WORST!WORST!WORST! Ordered online for delivery and received confirmation email. After an hour I called to find out when our food would arrive. I was told they do not deliver and they asked if I ordered online. When I said yes, they told me they tried to call me several times (I received no phone call) and that the website is old and they do not deliver. Additionally, they did not email me to let me know that they do not deliver. They did say "sorry". I asked why they do not take down the website and they said they probably should take it down and they will look into it. The taste of the food was great, and the service was nice. There is no delivery available, which may be a deal breaker for some. My husband and I were staying at the hotel across the street, so we just walked over. No big deal. The prices of the entrees were higher than what I've seen compared to other joints in the area, but I loved that the combination plates were available for lunch and dinner. The taste and flavor of the food was perfect, so the slightly higher prices were acceptable. One complaint is with the fried dumpling, which i chose as my appetizer for my combo plate. They placed it inside my to-go container, thereby ruining the crunchy texture found in a fried dumpling. Unless you are eating in, don't bother getting it. It just becomes a steamed dumpling. The sauce it comes with is delicious, but I am a texture person, and the crunch I wanted was sadly lost by its placement inside a closed container. Secondly is that I ordered the Pu Pu Platter, which is supposed to be served with roast pork fried rice, and we received none. I didn't realize this until I had gotten back to my room. If you spend $18 on something, it should be complete. We were in the middle of a huge snowstorm which is why I didn't go back to get my rice. This is the highest-quality Chinese takeout food in the area. It doesn't taste of old oil (ahem, Joyce's Noodle House), it's not gloppy (ahem, Full House). I appreciate the easy-to-use web-based ordering system. However, CHECK YOUR ORDER before you leave the store! I recently ordered moo shoo (or as they call it "moo shi"), and it came with NO pancakes and NO hoisin sauce; and my directions on the order saying "No sauce packets, please!" was ignored. The usual big wad of soy sauce packets was included. Who uses those things, anyway? As if Chinese food weren't salty and MSG-y enough. I wouldn't mind as much if it were duck sauce they were throwing at me - or better yet, how about the HOISIN sauce that makes moo shoo what it is? read more

I love Hop Sing. The people are really nice, food tastes great, fits a college student budget (which none of the other businesses in the area care to think of), and it's ready fast! You can even place your order online (though it doesn't really work from your phone; it has to be done on a computer). The quality is consistent and the portions are great. Do yourself a favor and don't get the shrimp, though. They use the tiny ones that aren't so great. My favorite dish is the General Tso's chicken combo platter. MMMMMMM. :P read more

Not my favorite Chinese in Essex. Very large portions, but not a lot of flavor. I had the chicken lo mein, crab Rangoon's, and dumplings. The lo mein could have used more chicken and a few more vegetables, the Rangoon's were more shell than stuffing, but the dumplings were good. IF I eat there again I will be trying something else, maybe it was just me, maybe they were having a bad day. But there are better Chinese restaurants in Essex. read more
