As Scott M said, some things are a bit high, but I have scored some great deals here on knives and utensils, so it's definitely worth checking out. Alright I admit it - I'm an Alton Brown geek. I don't cook as much as I'd like, but as a fan of his Food Network show "Good Eats", I've followed in his footsteps and tried to equip my kitchen with functional, quality tools and equipment. Star Restaurant Supply is the best source I found in the Valley for getting quality utensils, supplies and gadgets. Even though they're geared for professionals, its a great choice for the home cook and the prices are better than the Bed Bath and Beyond type stores. Now, we're not talking super high end stuff, like All-Clad cookware for example. Instead we're looking at solid equipment at a moderate price. Another yelper mentioned that they were treated poorly but I've shopped there several times and have had no problems. Anything found in a restaurant kitchen that is large and made with sheet metal can probably be found here and at prices that make you wonder why other places charge so much. Sure, it's not as slick and fancy as Williams-Sonoma and Sur La Table, but it also won't break the bank. The store is cleaner and tidier than when I first visited almost 20 years ago. Although not chock full for brand name items, they still sell well known stuff like Kitchen Aid mixer accessories for lower than retail and Vitamix blenders. So I'm a sushi chef & I found this awesome store in the valley because I needed a sharpening tools for my Nenox sujihiki custom & Miyabi Birchwood knife which is I found really hard to sharpen and becoming dull overtime. ( I was too lazy to buy something online because I needed it right away.) I was browsing through the knife section when Mr. Harut assisted me and gave me a little knowledge about knives and sharpening. He is a really nice guy and helped me out looking for sharpeners. What a store! I couldn't believe the square footage and product variety. There was a lady who walked me straight to what I was looking for AND she physically checked inventory for me. Who's this Alton Brown guy everyone keeps speaking of? Anyway... One thing i've learned when shopping for kitchenware is buy quality stuff. I bought basics from ikea, target and ralphs before but everything seemed so cheap. They always broke on me. I went through 3 can openers in one year. A CAN OPENER. I remember growing up, we had the same one for 20 years. I finally invested in a good pair off Amazon and its been my go to for quality kitchenware as well as Smart n Final (limited selection however). My mom used to own a restaurant when I was younger and I remembered Star from back in the day. I finally got the chance to go and wow... I should have came here from the beginning. I was pressed for time so I didn't get to spend all day there like I would/could have but I managed to pick up a 16? gauge baking pan for $5. Roasting rack, $10. Aluminum tongs $1(nicer ones are about 3). Squirt bottles (i've been looking everywhere for these!) for $1. Went for a sieve but sadly didnt have my size. Next time I need something, i'll definitely be back. And not sure why some were complaining about their service. I'm obviously no expert (shopping for kitchen stuff at ikea) but they were welcoming. read more

They need to do better with their return​ policy. The magnetic knife holder was fine but we didn't like the Mercer​ 400/1000 sharpening stone. I used it once but they only allow returns if they are not opened or used in any way, and it was less than 48 hours after purchase. Will not return. read more

Wish I could write otherwise, this store was heaven for me, there was everything I ever needed. Even though it's an hour away I would always take the trip down. Today my mother had asked me to get her 2 pizza peels. when checking out, the man asked to see my DEBIT card. Weird but I gave it to him. Since I was making a purchase for my mother, I had her card. The man asked rudely/, so who is this on the card ? I replied my mother, and he said I needed ID to match the card. I have purchased many items here with my mother's debit card without issue before. The manager just said " it's store policy " I felt very racially profiled, as a young brown man with a beard and a Hispanic last name. Just because the way I look you assume my debit card is stolen? I had to run back to my car to use my debit card, and in doing so I got an overdraft fee( I'm a 20 year old college student so don't have a lot of disposable income) to avoid having to drive an hour only to come home empty handed. According to the VISA Merchant Agreement, "Requesting Cardholder ID When should you ask a cardholder for an official government ID? Although Visa Rules do not preclude merchants from asking for cardholder ID except in the specific circumstances discussed in this guide, merchants cannot make an ID a condition of acceptance. Therefore, merchants cannot as part of their regular card acceptance procedures refuse to complete a purchase transaction because a cardholder refuses to provide ID. It is important that merchants understand that the requesting of a cardholder ID does not change the merchant's liability for chargebacks. However, it can slow down a sale and annoy the customer. In some cases, it may even deter the use of the Visa card and result in the loss of a potential sale. Visa believes merchants should not ask for ID as part of their regular card acceptance procedures. Laws in several countries also make it illegal for merchants to write a cardholder's personal information, such as an address or phone number, on a sales receipt." I love the convenient street parking on the side street right off such a busy main street. When you walk in you are most likely greeted by a staff member behind the check out counter or hidden within the aisles. This store is not as large as some other culinary supply stores that I've been too, but I can always find at least a couple things that are cheaper here. Some of these items are slightly overpriced, but because I'm not a compulsive shopper, I've done my research with the competitors. I came in for a few items I need for an upcoming event so since it's near my house, I thought I would stop by. I was able to find a few full sheet pans for $4.95 and a 36" aluminum check ticket rail for $14.10. I had other items on my list but after comparing elsewhere I knew these two items were a great deal. I will always swing by here if I need a quick buy or to check out some new items they may have gotten in. I've never had a problem here and the staff always have a great attitude. read more

Without needing to be asked, Noah came over to help put together my bar kit, offering honest suggestions on what I should and shouldn't buy. While assisting me, several other customers requested his service and seemed to know all about him and his travel plans. Clearly, they take the extra step to form relationships with their clients. I got everything I needed and at 10% off for industry relations. My only complaint is that they don't carry 28oz or 30oz Boston shakers. I needed to replace my fry pan and found some great choices, along with a sandwich spatula that can get all the peanut butter out of the jar. I am giving this place 3 stars, and I will break it down a little bit. They are very far away from, as I live in lancaster, but that does not affect the score whatsoever. 5 stars for selection. Great selection, great store. Although small, that does not affect anything also. 3 stars for Service. I have dealt with many of the workers here. I have one I like to deal with, and I will not name him here. The others are crap. They are rude and money hungry. The problem is, they are not looking out for what is best for you, they are trying to make the most money they can off of you (paid on commission). Instead of making sure to ensure great quality service, they try and upsell you on everything! Making a trip cost hundreds of dollars extra! I also can not stand the sign they have up saying your attitude will cost an extra 50 dollars. This is just ridiculous and very offensive. It should be removed by the owner, and obviously shows how tasteless and rude he himself is. He should be respectful of his customers, every single one who walks in, whether they buy a fork or a refrigerator! Everyone is a customer and he should be grateful they chose his store instead of online, which is no undoubtedly closer and probably cheaper! There is no parking here, you have to park down the street, or maybe across at Wendys and walk over. But they can not help they are in a bad location. I would like to give this place an average of 4, but the unfortunate truth is, I am not a fan, and it is just A-Ok! My husband and I wandered into this place yesterday on a whim looking for, of all things, an egg ring. The place closest to us was wholesale only, thus we ended up here. This was like freakin' Candyland to me. They had pretty much everything you could ever possibly use, whether your looking to be Alton Brown at home or you're an actual chef/student. Contrary to what I've read in some reviews here, we were not given stink eye when we asked for something that was right in front of us. The guys behind the counter treated us no different than if we were buying a Continental fridge instead of the $3.70 egg ring set that we eventually bought. There was also no one jumping on us to buy stuff as we walked through with our jaws open gawping at everything for the better part of an hour. The prices on some things are not what you'd call "bargains". However, I know that you're also getting some good quality items, despite not having the Rachel Ray or Mario Batalli name emblazoned on. Parking is does suck, so try and head over on a weekend (surprisingly not crowded) or park in the Costco/Staples lot and walk over. Another caveat was that they were out of cheesecloth (woe is me...). Gives me an excuse to come back though. Overall, we were very satisfied with our experience here and plan to make it our first stop when looking for kitchen items. Definitely come in knowing what you want. Otherwise you'll probably sink all your rent for the month here. read more

I come here to get coffee filters for my work and they say they close at 5:30. I even called ahead of time to say that I'm on my way and will be getting there on the dot and all I needed was coffee filters. I rush through traffic to get there at 7:30 on the dot and as soon as I try to open the door. A gentlemen tells me their closed. I try to explain to them that I called ahead of time to let them know I'm on my way and you would tho k he would have some kind of sympathy since being Friday and I a minute late literally but he doesn't care and closes the door on me. RUDE, RUDE, beyond RUDE. Placed an order online like they had informed us to do. Placed the order and items were in stock. 4 hours later we drive to the van nuys location to pick up our ONLINE order. The lady that was helping me was not very familiar and very confused with online orders. I present her with our online order confirmation.... oh no I need a phone number. (Why having a confirmation number if you go by phone numbers) she was not familiar with the computer and POS system. I told her that I could wait if the order is not ready. Then a guy with a bandana face mask was extremely rude and made a snarky comment ... you should not have ordered ONLINE... and just come in! It was just the way he said it. Was unacceptable. We were informed this morning that the order needed to be done ONLINE. With all covid regulations before you drive 20 miles you want to be sure that the items are in stock. Nobody offered to go check on the order or anything. We used to come a lot before it changed to chef's toys. But we will not put another foot in there! The place is really cool. The place is geared for chefs and restaurant owners. If you enjoy cooking or baking this place is worth a visit. They have a lot of stuff that you can get for your kitchen. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I would just walk around and pick stuff that suits your culinary needs.
