Chen's was a very pleasant surprise. The food was good. Nothing really "blew me away" except the chicken wings. Large, crispy, juicy. The rest of the food was solid. No complaints. The pleasant surprises were the family ambiance at the bar, casual and friendly wait staff interested in genuine conversation and beautiful fish ponds and gardens at the entry. With all of the family photos and letters from local charities and sports teams, I can tell the owner is proud of where they come from and proud of where they are. This place was overpriced and the food was less than stellar. I feel like it's hard to mess up Chinese food but this place managed to do it. We got steamed dumplings (which were the only highlight of the meal) as well as general tso's chicken and the empress chicken. The empress chicken sauce had the flavor of ketchup and the sauce on the General tso's was as thin as water. Didn't even stick to the chicken and when I tried it on it's own I could barely taste anything. Luckily, we kept the sauce from the dumplings as it was the only flavorful sauce we had and we put it on our actual meals. We won't be coming back. read more

House of Wow! I first ate at House of Chen back in the year 2001, on a trip with some friends that had eaten there in years past. And it was easily the best Chinese food I had ever had. The decor was nice, the service was great, and they did this thing where they would line up these glasses of water in a semicircle, and pour water into it with a pitcher filled with small slices of lemon. The waiter would then fill the glasses of water in one fell swoop, and somehow, each glass would have exactly two pieces of lemon in it. So let's fast forward nine years. My friends and I had not been to House of Chen since 2001, and it had become a place of legend in our minds, in our hearts, and in our stomachs. I was visiting them in Buffalo, NY. Nostalgia had us Google the establishment. Uh-oh. It wasn't House of Chen anymore, it had rebranded itself as Chen's of Cranberry. The restaurant had been remodeled. We debated endlessly, wondering if things were different, and so we called. We called and we found out that the restaurant had only been renovated, that it was still owned and managed by the same people, and that the food was allegedly the same. With that knowledge, we planned a three hour road trip from Buffalo, NY to Pittsburgh, PA. Our official mission was to frequent the Ikea there, because one of our company had just moved into a new house and so needed house type stuff. But deep in our hearts, we knew our true goal: to once again dine at House of Chen. We were afraid. Not having eaten there for almost a decade, the restaurant had achieved a somewhat mythical status in our heads. And we were afraid that returning would ruin it. In sort of the same manner that if you watched the cartoons we loved so much as a kid, we would hate them. (Side note, do NOT watch Voltron on Hulu if you loved Voltron as a child.) Returning was a big risk to take. We didn't want to ruin the past. And after a long day of driving and Ikea-ing we arrived. The placed looked about the same as it did in my memory. The koi pond was still there. So far so good. The inside was drastically different, but passable. We ordered. No waiter pouring lemon slices into our water glasses with precision. We started to worry. And the food arrived. And all of our fears were set aside. All was right in the world. The food was as good as we remembered. Quality ingredients, friendly wait staff, great presentation, and reasonably priced for quality food. The waitress who served us listened to our story and was quite surprised that we had driven so far down to eat there. In fact, during the said meal, I actually paused to text friends to let them know I was at House of Chen and that the food was still incredible. And I even posted pictures to Facebook to share with everyone of the triumph of the soul that we had achieved that night. A year has passed since the last time we had eaten there, and now I live in Boston. But at the end of this summer, we all are planning to return to House of Chen. read more

DId some gremlin infest this once hallowed hall of Chinese mastery? Is the bright new sign casting gloom and doom inside? Is an intervention necessary? An exorcism? Something has gone desperately wrong here. To be sure, Chen's was great. For years it was great. I've had more takeout from here than from any known Chinese restaurant within 50 miles. But, alas, my last 3 times have been disappointing and it comes time when excuses can no longer be made and that slip into ordinary (or below!) hits you full square in the face. It's happened here I regret to say. The hot and sour soup was thick and tasted of corn starch. No spice level was recognizable at all. An adventure in blandville - no one needs that. The shredded pork with black pepper sauce ordered EXTRA spicy was neither spicy nor did it have any sauce. NONE. Blah. A few pepper flakes adhering to shredded pork strips is neither appetizing to look at nor tasty on the palate. Clumps of steamed white rice covered in pork strips? On the heels of that hot and sour soup? No thanks. I've reached my limit. I've tried to rekindle the romance but it takes two my friend. The magic just isn't there anymore. It's over. Dear Chen's, I stopped by last week with my good friend Robert. We haven't been in since your extensive remodel. The exterior hasn't changed much, except for that gawd awful paint color! Ugh! But the interior is totally refreshed and suddenly light and airy. I love the wall of aquiriams. And I love the soft blue ambient pendant lighting. It's beautiful. And the huge curved bar is amazing. You are much more hip now, more modern. Truthfully, I love you either way. Service is still totally awesome, doesn't seem like the menu has changed a lot. But look at all the choices on the sushi menu!! Amazing! And the food is great. No matter what you choose. It's all great. Best General Tso's Shrimp in town. Best noodles. Best pan-fried dumplings. Stopped in for a late afternoon bite. We ordered apps and I got a "Chen's Tropical" drink. The drink was very good, not overly sweet, but nicely balanced. I couldn't taste the alcohol, but did feel it a bit, so be careful of this sneaky one. Our crab Rangoon was flavorful and crisp. Our chicken teriyaki came with a thickened sauce that had a good sweet and salty umami flavor. I could make a meal on it, but glad I also tried their steamed dumplings. Nice meatballs of flavored meat wrapped with perfectly constructed hand pinched dumplings. Not as easy to eat with a fork as they are with chopsticks, but we didn't ask for them. Next time I will. My family has been loyal to House of Chen for what must be over a decade now, and they are loyal right back because when my Dad walks in, they already know who he is and what to serve him if he goes in by himself for lunch, and when we place an order for takeout, it's not unsual for them to throw in an extra order of wonton soup and pack our cartons to the brim. The food is some of the best American Chinese food I've ever had and for as long as I've been eating there, I've never found another place's General Tso's chicken and bbq ribs to be as good. I currently live in San Diego, and even though I have access to all sorts of wonderful Asian cuisine on the West Coast, I miss me some House of Chen! read more

We met some friends there on a Saturday night. They have raved about this place for years, but I never got a chance to try it until recently. Well, I wish I would have come here sooner! The food was delicious! I had the orange beef with white rice (unexciting, I know!). There was a ton of food, definitely enough for two meals. It had the perfect balance of spice and citrusy sweet undertones. No mystery meat here! The service was great with our server and even other servers constantly checking on our drinks to make sure they were full. I'm pretty sure I drank like 4 cokes because it was always being refilled. Cost is average (mid-teens to low twenty's depending on the entrée) and for all the food you get I felt like it was definitely worth it. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing but I didn't see what everybody else sees in this place. I started out with Crab Rangoon. Now, this was good. You could break one in two and see the crab meat mixed in with the cream cheese filling. The plum (?) sauce they brought out with it was bland, bland, bland, but I much prefer soy sauce with this appetizer anyway. Next, I had the hot and sour soup. It was hot, needing a bit of time to cool down. But I think I got all of the sour vinegar in the first spoonful. The rest of the bowl tasted more beefy, with none of the sour pop I've had at other Oriental restaurants. My main entree was the Hunan Chicken, supposedly a spicy dish. The chicken was cooked very nicely, and almost melted in your mouth. And the vegetables were definitely fresh. But the flavor and the spice was just not there. Again, no pop. I feel bad leaving a 2 star review instead of three but yes, I have had better. Based on the good parts, I will definitely give Chen's another chance and maybe order the General Tso's next time. read more

My wife suggested this place for dinner on night, so we tried it. I'm usually not much of a Chinese food fan, but this place was different. The food tasted fresh and was seasoned perfectly. I was very impressed. The restaurant was nice and clean and the prices were reasonably. My 12 year old son lost his wallet there and the manager tracked us down from my sons Game-stop card. There was fifty dollars in his wallet, that was still there. I was shocked that there is still honest people out there. Thanks again to the employees there for your honesty. OMG I'm in love with their KimChi pork. Flavorful and delicious with just the right amount of spice. Also ordered the chicken curry (yellow curry) was also good (not off the charts). Hubby enjoyed his Kung Pao beef and the kids liked the General Tso (not too sweet). I was very disappointed! first and wort off I found a long black hair in my Wonton soup. I couldn't eat it after that. Then the egg roll was very bland with too much cabbage (filler). The General Tso's was very good but the eggs rolls were sitting in about an inch of oil in the little bags they put them in. Your mileage may vary as this review relates to visits from a year ago. That said, the inside is interestingly laid out. Bar to the front, seats in a U shape. Fish tanks and other ethnic items. But the service was not particularly involved, and presentation basic and normal. The sake we ordered was not, repeat, not hot, but lukewarm -- a rather basic error in presentation of this beverage. I see other reviewers of more recent visits speak of a significant downgrade in experience. i cannot comment on those. Perhaps I will revisit and hope for the best. read more

Best chinese in Cranberry. Although I've had better Chinese elsewhere. Nice that they are a family run buisness that has been established so long in Cranberry. I truly wanted to like this restaurant because of the decent reviews. We ordered take out recently ( shrimp fried rice and shrimp with broccoli) And the shrimp smelled like ammonia. I ate a little bit but only one or two pieces of shrimp. I knew something wasn't right so I tossed it. Thankfully I did. I discovered that the ammonia smell meant the shrimp was old and bad! First time visiting the House of Chen. I was excited to find the menu had more variety than most Chinese restaurants. The food was delicious and our waitress was friendly. The food was a little more expensive than expected, so if you're looking for something cheap, this isn't your place. Heard great things about their food so decided to give it a try on a random Monday night. We were welcomed by the hostess and seated promptly. Saw a couple folks bundling up their leftovers, so figured the serving size must be substantial. Was really excited to try the white meat general tso's from the abundant menu offerings. Was very excited to try this place I have heard so much about! After reviewing the menu once, twice, three times and now could probably cite the entire menu from memory, we waited for a server to take our drink orders. By this time the entire dining area was empty. We saw a server headed our way and thought "it's go time" just to see them bussing an empty table and never return. We peered thru the glass wall at the bar tender, hostess, servers all wondering what was happening. Still no server, not even an offer for a beverage. 20 minutes later we succumbed to our hunger and decided to leave. Extremely disappointing and probably won't give them another chance. If the place was busy I could understand this but it was 7:20pm on a Monday evening and the parking lot was nearly empty. Hopefully this was an anomaly but unfortunately the utter disappointment with their service I won't ever know. Plenty of other places in Cranberry Twp to patronize. A hidden gem. I found this place by accident and I am very glad I did. Nestled behind the cranberry gardens plaza is a lovely place to dine. My daughter and I went on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. We were seated quickly and served drinks almost immediately. The decor is a bit dated but very nicely done. We were lucky to be seated in view of the beautiful fish tanks at feeding time. Felt a bit like dinner and a show. We ordered the steamed dumplings and crab rangoon as our apps. We were told the dumplings would take about 20 minutes and asked if that would be ok and we said yes. We found them to be well worth the wait. The crab rangoon was very tasty and crisp, generously filled and folded in the traditional style not like triangle shaped ravioli. My daughter had the egg flower soup and I had the wonton soup. Both were nice and hot and had good flavor. For our entrees we had sweet and sour chicken, and sesame shrimp. They were served with fried rice which was really good. The shrimp were really big and perfectly seasoned. The vegetables were still crisp but warm the way a properly cooked veggie should be. Portion sizes were generous. We are both big eaters and we had leftovers for later. The service was amazing. Our drinks were kept filled, the pace of the service was perfect and we were well attended to without being hovered over. For two drinks, two soups, two apps, and two entrees we spent $36.31. Given the generous portions I feel we got our moneys worth. We will definitely be back. Another factor in my satisfaction is the chairs at the table are comfortable and are fat chick friendly. All too often the chairs have arms which are too narrow, are hard, or in general uncomfortable. At Chen's both ends of me were happy. :) read more

After reading the reviews we decided to give chance a chance. Our party of five went there on Sunday. This place was way below average. Our server acted like she had to get home because her house was on fire. We got the lunch specials which included soup. She never offered us the soup or ask ask what type of soup we wanted. When we asked about the soup, she said it was fried rice or soup. This was not what the menu said, it clearly stated soup and fried rice. Other reviews said the portions where Hugh. First visit to Chen's. It was a slow night or at least it was slow when we arrived at 6:30 on a Thursday. My kids were enchanted with the fish and our service was excellent from arrival at the hostess stand throughout our entire dinner. We ordered two plates of food which was plenty for three of us eating and we had leftovers for lunch. My son said the General Tsos was the best he'd ever had (he has had a lot!).
