The best masala dosa I've had this side of Hyderabad. Excellent coconut chutney and sambar.

Food is really good and home taste. I recommend highly North Indian thali. It's verity and good quantity. Rotis are made fresh!! Vada is super good. Highly recommended. Cute little restaurant with tasty Indian food. My son and I had curry with paneer (cheese), curry with chole (chickpeas), samosas with chutney, naan and papadum. We also had mango lassi, sweet lassi, chai marsala and water. The two Gujurati ladies behind the counter were very friendly and pleasant. They seem to have quite a number of return/regular customers ranging from young people to elderly people. We are in-between as I am middle-aged and my kid is a teenager. We intend to come back here whenever we are in the area for a doctor's visit. read more

Price was cheap but food was horrible. Ordered rava masala dosa, poori potato masala, upma, pongal, idli and vada. Only thing that tapered better was the yellow chutney. No words for how bad the food was. Sambar tasted like salt water, potato masala was same, pooris were too crispy to eat, pongal was made with basmati and was not completely cooked. This happened last time (week and half back) when I took out a 3 idly meal (comes with sides - three chutney and sambhar), the amount of the chutneys given was very less. Today went in for a meal, showed the picture of my last experience to the person at the counter as she helped us last time. Asked her why the quantity of Chutney was way less that they normally give us in a takeout order. She jumped with rage, reacted unwantedly, said 'your raising this concern for chutneys being less?, you are pissing me off, if you guys don't like our food, don't come here' and asked us to leave. Bottom line, the lady at the counter doesn't take feedbacks and don't expect the sides to be given at a decent quantity for anything you order as a take out ! I am a regular customer and 4 yrs back left a positive review for the place. Removed that review and logging this now. First time when I went there, I had Paneer masala dosa. I liked it so much that I thought of giving a 5 star and going there again. They had given it with tomato onion chutney and it was super yummy. Second time, I had palak masala dosa and samosas. The dosa and samosas were indeed very yummy but not the coconut chutney and sambhar. The sambhar looked little watery and the lady at the counter did an error with the billing but she corrected it when I told her. So just be careful with the bill. The overall ambiance and decor is not so great but the overall food is delicious. The kitchen is open. So you can see them cooking too. read more

I did feel like the prices did not reflect the interior as the place really needs a renovation. $8 for a dosa with potato is a little overpriced especially when you have competition all along Newark Ave. I also had to ask for my coffee twice before they remembered to make it. read more

This is my place for ordering early breakfast when I am home for idli or dosa as they deliver by 10 am (which is early considering some other restaurants offer delivery after 11 pm or so). I ordered the paneer masala dosa. Dosa is an Indian crepe made from various lentils and rice. It's usually very crisp and savory; stuffed with a delicious filling of your choice. Today I chose paneer and potatoes filling. The potatoes were not seasoned well and the shredded paneer was plain. It was not heavily stuffed and therefore not worth the price I paid for it. The sambhar and chutneys, which are given complimentary to all dosa orders, was alright. The sambhar was a little bland for my taste buds since I've had better sambhars in Jersey City. But I loved the chutneys and it was very fresh. I love coconut chutney (white-colored) because it perfectly balances the level of spice from the red chutney and savoriness from the dosa. read more

This is a pretty decent place for affordable price. Pros: good portions, 3 kinds of cutneys, unlimited sambar, affordable pricing and masala tea. Cons: ambience and service. There was this one lady who was taking the orders and also serving the food. Hence, when there were many guests, the service got really slow. The place is quiet small and is poor in ambience, but it makes up in the quantity and quality of food. I had ordered 1 plate idli ( = 3 idlis), 1 onion rava dosa and 1 plain dosa along with 2 Masala teas. I can say all the three items were quiet filling and the plain dosa was quiet crisp. Like some others here, I'm disappointed by the declining quality of this place, both food and service, to the point where I've decided to not go there again. I'd gone several times, almost always ordered the same item (paneer dosa), and, until the next-to-last time, found the food delicious and service courteous. The low prices and generous portions didn't hurt, either. Today and the prior time I went, which would be a couple of months ago, I expect, my order took much longer to prepare than before. Since I'm usually not in a hurry, I didn't mind the wait too much; I'd take a seat, catch my breath, and anticipate my food. What made the situation worse today was, first, that. other customers, who came in after me, were served long before I was. Of the employees behind the counter, one was inept, and the other plain rude. When I complained about the time I'd had to wait for my order, unlike the other customers, I got some BS about how dosas take longer to prepare than other dishes; I didn't even have a chance to say that my order was also prepared incorrectly (I was served a dosa with some kind of melted cheese, not paneer, as I specified twice I wanted) since the second one, who made the excuse, started muttering something in a language I don't know -- but I'm sure whatever she had to say wasn't flattering.The so-called manager, who was only pointed out to me after I'd made my complaint, didn't intervene and seemed to find the whole matter amusing. Simple place, unpretentious tasty food. I'm taking one star off for cleanliness of the place, which was only so-so. I've eaten that three times now, and each time was satisfying. Probably the least expensive South Indian restaurant in little India. I'm not sure where one would park, as I took the path train there. The young girl taking the food orders was very pleasant, and actually reminded me of my little sister.. Chutneys are horrible. Dosa is OK but no spicy at all. No salt no spice. Horrible taste. Sambar is the same too, with no spice no salt, tasteless. But it is much better than those horrible chutneys. Now I understand why Hyderabadi food is the best in the world. read more

We have ordered cheese masala dosa. It was yummy. Service was slow. We have ordered onion tomato uttapam which was thick and non hygienic too. Cherry to the cake was the hairs inside the uttapam. They serve food of the type called tiffin in South India. This place is what they call a 'canteen' in India. If you are looking for a posh or fancy place with great ambience, then this is not the place for you. But if you are looking for authentic and fresh tiffin, this is the place to go. 1. They have the best vadais I have tasted in my 30+ years in the U.S. 2. They have recently started serving potato bondas. Most Indian restaurants in the U.S. don't serve bondas, and when they do, they are simply not authentic or tasty. Chennai Dosa Express' bondas are the best I have tasted in any restaurant in the U.S. 3. I have eaten here twice now, once with a friend and once alone. It is definitely an unpretentious cafe, but serves THE BEST South Indian food I have had ANYWHERE, to present. On my first visit, I shared a $9 thali with a friend.I have a big appetite but it was really enough for both of us. Moreover, this food was spicy to the Nth power! I was in heaven, particularly with the baigan and rasam. Like at Dosa House, there is a self-serve sambar kettle here. But here, no one tried to limit me! I'm not a rice lover at all but I scarfed up the plain basmati like never before Though difficult to believe, my second visit was even better. I ordered the $5.50 mysore masala dosa...and about 5 minutes later, began swooning after the first bite. This behemoth of a dosa tasted 110% fresh from it's outermost tips to the innermost mouthful of potato filling. Unparalleled in flavor, it did not disappoint in terms of crispiness, either. Not surprisingly, they didn't skimp on the spicy chutney inside and the sambar on the second visit was supremely spicy. As for the chutneys, the tomato one was solid, but the coconut: ethereal. Yeah it's kind of a seedy hole in the wall, open kitchen with pretty clean tables,and the atmosphere is not what you come here for,, but, their dosas are unbelievable! So cheap and Huge portions! I can name a number of towns all over the state that would kill to have a delicious vegan veggie friendly authentic spicy Dosa heaven like this.
