The food is great. I love the water and the orange chicken, shrimp. Don't get me started on the rice.

I was in the area for this year's Rod Run to the End of the World and decided to stop in with a friend for dinner. The prices were reasonable, but the customer service was absolutely horrible from the start. The restaurant was nearly empty (only one other party there), yet we were rushed to order, and only a couple of bites into our meals, we were handed to-go boxes as if we were being pushed out the door. The woman serving us was rude and unprofessional. When it came time to pay, my friend dropped a cash tip into a jar labeled "cooks." The server immediately said, "We don't get that money, it goes to the cooks." My friend replied, "Good." Shockingly, the waitress then pulled the money out of the jar and pocketed it right in front of us. If the owner happens to read this, please know--this employee should not be working with the public. She was wearing one of those electronic fan devices around her neck, but unfortunately, I didn't catch her name. Now, about the food: if you're starving, it'll fill you up, but honestly, it was gross and poorly prepared. If you can walk a few more minutes to another restaurant, I highly recommend doing so. Not very good quality food. Breading was pretty thick and the fried items like the sesame chicken and ss chicken had that taste of old cooking oil. When the take out hit my car it smelled awful. Pork fried rice 2/5, almond chicken chow mein 1/5, crab puffs 2/5, fried chicken items both solid 1/5. Bbq pork 2.5/5, price 1/5, was charged $35.57 for a pick 4 and pick 3, price on their online website menu had that a $15.75 & $14 price tag for $29.75, unless tax is 20% not sure how it got to be $6 more then their website price? boy-o-boy!!..i made the bad mistake of my not checking the reviews on this place before coming here. this chinese restaurant needs to be shut down and put out of its misery!! theres nothing fresh, authentic or friendly about this place, they use old cheap quality ingredients in their overpriced small portioned dishes and the waiter/cashier has a lazy passive-aggressive rude attitude. she outright called me annoying when i asked for extra hot mustard packets after she only gave me one. the $15 chow mein noodles were like cheap cup-a-noodle type noodles and the orange chicken wasnt even edible, was like old tough chicken jerky drowning in cheap out of the can orange sauce. worst chinese i ever had!! hand down read more

Typical Chinese restaurant in an old building to include the duct type over the rips of vinyl booth seats. The service was good and not many people dining in, mostly to go orders what I seen during our visit. The food was fresh and delicious my wife had the dinner special being garlic chicken with vegetables was excellent. Son had orange chicken he was happy with his selection. I chose the general Tao chicken and it was solid but missing the peppers, carrots, onion and broccoli I am accustomed with this entree. Overall satisfying experience. read more

My boyfriend and I have been there many times and keep coming back because the food is so good. They are also open later than most places, which is so nice. We usually have the pan-fried noodles and the pork fried rice and its Sooooo good. We've also had many other things off their menu that are sooo delicious. I have been coming to the peninsula over 10 yrs and was skeptical as there were never any cars in parking. I had a strong desire for egg foo young and thought let's give it a try. I should have trusted my instinct. You open the door and instantly hit with the smell of fried food w/overpowering disinfectant smell. The prices were reasonable and I got my order to go. I got home and was so excited, I took my first bite off the EFY...it was in a patty form. No fresh vegetables no egg. It had the texture of filler like rice or fake meat, no veggies, no bean sprouts, just a few flecks of carrot. The gravy was congealed almost clear and completely inedible. The almond chicken was basically chicken tenders with grated almonds in it. And the exact same nasty gravy. I threw it all away. I was hoping for even mediocre...but nope. This was the worst restaurant I've been to. Instead of saying they were out of noodles for the chow mein they first gave my friend a plate of bean sprouts and ground up chicken. However, once they ran out of bean sprouts, they served a plate of chopped up celery with shredded almonds as chow mein (acting like it was normal). For my birthday dinner earlier today, I desperately wanted Chinese food since I normally can't eat anything that has MSG in it without getting terribly sick. I took a chance and went back into my memories for a place I used to love as a child. Hence going to Chen's. I remembered my family gathering and enjoying a lovely meal in a warm atmosphere with amazing service. Today, I gathered once again my family and friends and we went in for a meal. Long story short, this is the first time in years that I didn't get sick from eating Chinese food! I loved the flavors and how sweet they all are. The food was warm and delicious and didn't get sick at all from it! I can confidently say they do not use MSG as a person who is so sensitive to it. I told my family afterwards that I will be going back to the restaurant way more from now on since they are the ONLY Chinese food place I can eat at on the peninsula. read more

Please listen to the reviews and don't be like us and think people online are being harsh. The wait staff when we entered were not friendly, and decided to seat us next to the only other patrons in the restaurant, despite there being several other tables available. We moved to a different booth on our own. When ordering, our waitress warned us that all of their chicken is essentially the same, all deep fried just with different sauces. She also let us know the sesame chicken does not have a sauce, just sesame seeds thrown into the batter that the chicken is dipped in...? We ordered the sweet and sour pork, sesame chicken, crabs puffs and pork fried chicken. The only redeemable dish was the rice, well because it was just rice. And the crab rangoons were okay and the ends were burnt. After trying everything we ordered it all tasted like oil and batter. The chicken and pork were both very greasy and the ratio of batter to meat was high. It just felt like eating batter with a surprise bit of meat inside. I also bit into a piece of chicken and it was just gristle, and that's when I tapped out. It was pretty pathetic, oily and not a welcoming environment. The interior is probably the best part, but what's the point if your food is not good? EVEN the fortune cookies were burnt, if you cant buy properly made fortune cookies, there's a problem. Again, it's our bad for not trusting reviews, but if you're reading this go to McDonald's and your chicken will be better. read more

Bad food bad drinks- Staff didn't speak more than a few words of English - mainly smiles nods and greetings (which has never been an issue elsewhere we've been), but it's bad when you point to the items on the menu as well as write it out on their menu pad and when you open your to go container you find some white rice and plain no sauce fried chicken and then chicken with goooy red sauce. My hunny ordered chicken chow mein and pork fried rice. It looked pale and slimy. The cocktails that arrived while we were waiting were potent and definitely made by someone who doesn't know the difference between the large amount of varieties listed on their drink menu. *** annnnd my better half developed food poisoning after he ate part of his meal. It's so unfortunate that my review on my take out meal from Chen's isn't going to be positive. Despite all of the negative reviews I read before trying this restaurant, I still wanted to try it out wondering if maybe the kitchen has improved from the past. It hasn't. I ordered egg flower soup; and it was the only part of my meal I ate; and only mildly enjoyed. Just like the rest of my meal, it was bland and unimpressive. Egg flower soup is such a beloved part of good Chinese cuisine, so this was a big disappointment. I also ordered chicken chow mein, BBQ pork and egg foo young. The egg foo young was a patty that tasted nothing like actual egg foo young, I'm guessing they are kept in stacks in the freezer. It had a very bland gravy poured on top. It was mushy too. It's not even remotely possible that their egg foo young has ever been made from scratch. I barely got through a couple of bites. The second bite was to confirm what I thought of the first bite: flat out gross. Have the staff ever tried it? Or compared it to awesome egg foo young? I wonder. The BBQ pork wasn't edible. I questioned how fresh the pork was. I spit it out. There wasn't any sesame seeds or hot mustard included with it; which are traditionally served with that dish. It tasted old, dry, and again lacked flavor. I was provided with two containers of an orange colored sauce, I tried a little bit didn't enjoy it or knew what it was for. The chicken chow mein wasn't good either. The pieces of chicken were rubbery, again making me feel nervous about eating it. How old was the chicken? I'll never know. No flavor to it whatsoever. I have no idea how this restaurant is seasoning their dishes. It kind of taste like there's no seasoning added at all. The question of "is this fresh" or safe to eat was the theme of the meal. I'm pretty upset because I spent money there and had I known what the meal would taste like, I would have gone somewhere else. The two good things I can say about Chen's is that the service was friendly and they packaged my take out order nicely. I always appreciate that. I really wish the owner/s would take all of the negative reviews to heart and change. Chen's is the only Chinese restaurant in town, so they could absolutely monopolize on that. If they could revitalize their dishes and hire some amazing cooks, they'd have a great customer base from locals to visitors. Good Luck Chen's. I won't be back. read more

After walking around the town from store to store my family was getting hungry. Our first choice was crowded so we decided to try a place we had not tried in the past, Chens. This place is clean and the customer service is good. The food however seems to have been cooked that morning or maybe a few days before. Nothing tasted like it was going bad but it was definitely old and not very warm. Not sure we will go back here when we visit in the future. Hopefully you have a better experience. read more

This place just doesn't care about the service or quality of food. Our server definitely was nice enough but it was obvious she was unable to tell the cooks that things looked gross so she severed the food anyway with a basic, "sorry". The soup was so gelatinous that it was like pudding, our sweet and sour chicken and pork was so over cooked they could have been used as hockey pucks, the fried rice had zero flavor and the almond gravy wasn't much better. I asked it I could order a side of steamed vegetables and was told the owners don't allow that, you have to order the steam veggie meal.... Glad I didn't waste that extra money. The owner was there and never looked up at us once while seating us or checking us out.... Never said thank you or how was everything. I didn't even bother to say anything because it was apparent they don't care. My only guess is because it is a vacation town they don't care about quality since they won't ever see most of the people again. We are in town often and love to give our patronage to local businesses. But Chen's has been checked off as a DO NOT GO BACK. read more

Pretty average Chinese fare here. The spicy dishes had a little heat but definitely not what I'd consider spicy. There was some flavor overall but I feel like this all was designed around average US-based Chinese food. The service was good, they did well with our large group and lots of requests and randomization from children. The restaurant setup was a little rough around edges but again not unexpected. Only one serious issue with purchasing a bottle of wine; the one I originally asked for wasn't available so they offered a substitute. It was less expensive but the ticket was not dealt with so had to correct that before paying. I didn't bother with trying to ask them to split the check given the large group complexities it would have presented a challenge. To its benefit they are open long past most places in Long Beach so while it might be your only option, I think one could do worse. read more

Only place in town for Chinese so I feel they don't try very hard. Ordered ginger beef it was a completely different thing than the menu description. There was no baby corn, no water chestnuts, not spicy but menu said spicy. It was basically onions with a small amount of beef. I'll be driving across the bridge for Chinese from now on. Sweet baby Jesus... don't go. Seriously don't. We just left this dive after being FORCED to pay for an inedible meal. We ordered two entrees, one was good.. the other was complete gruel and was sent back to the kitchen after two bites. We were then informed that it would NOT be removed from our bill and that we would have to pay or they would cal the police.. and the nasty little twits did just that. After a brief discussion with the local officer who had obviously had to do this more times than he cared to.. we were forced to pay for the slop that they consider Kung Pow Chicken. I'm out of my ever loving mind here. 2018 and my well degreed, polite husband was just accused of trying to dine and dash buy someone who the police know well enough to merely groan and roll their eyes. I want to like Chen's. In fact, I did until yesterday. Over the past 3 years I've ordered fried rice as a takeout several times. It's been pretty good, until yesterday. Having enjoyed Chen's pork fried rice a few months ago, I ordered it again, only in the large size. The person at the cash register could not have been nicer and more courteous. To my horror, though, when I opened the take-out box at home, I didn't find pork fried rice. No, what Chen's sold me as pork fried rice was about 1 or 2 inches of barbecued pork chopped into small cubes on top of dense overcooked rice. Now, imagine if I had been at a work site with just my chop sticks and the take-out box. It was so full that it would have been impossible to stir all that pork evenly into the rice, especially without making a mess. I would have had to eat my way through the diced pork layer to get to the rice. Even at home, where I could take out all the pork, put it onto a plate, then put some rice on a different part of the plate and stir a small amount of the pork into the rice so as not to overwhelm it, the result was unappetizing and unacceptable. For one thing. there were few indications that the rice in the box was actually Chinese fried rice. Instead of being separated and al dente, the grains of rice were overcooked and stuck together like they'd been scooped out of a tray that had been sitting for a while. Remarkably for fried rice, I found just one fragment of yellow egg yolk and NO other ingredients such as bean sprouts, peas, cubed carrots or green onion. The biggest drawback, though, was that the pork and rice had not been cooked together. As a result, the rice did not any of the pork flavor and the barbecued pork showed no signs of having been exposed to heat and the other ingredients in a wok. The pork and rice were two ingredients that had never met, just stacked. How could someone think this would be acceptable? I will not be back. read more

The only reason I give a star is for the server. Her service was great and I felt sorry for her. For those of you who thought that this place deserves 3 stars or more, please do yourselves a favor and have some better chinese food. By all standards, it was the worst food I had to pay for in my entire life, and I am Asian myself. 1. Hot and sour soup: thought this was mediocre, but turned out that it was one of the edible food. 2. deeeeeeeeep fried egg roll: I think they fried it once, kept it in fridge, put flour on it and fried it again before serving. You can see it in the pic how its fried bread part has multiple thick layers altogether about 1/4 inch. The filler was lettuce which smelled kinda old. 3. Fried shrimp: The fried bread is so thick that its almost the same amount as he shrimp in it. Never in my life I had such a bad fried shrimp. See how much bread we had to take off from the shrimp? way too much. 4. sweet and sour pork: same thick fried bread, and the pork kinda smelled.. 5. pork fried rice: completely dry and smells bad.. dunno how old its ingredients would be.. 6. chow mein: edible bc of soy sauce..? summary: dear owner, I really think your fried food have some issues. you really gotta change the recipe.. dear yelpers, do not go here.If you have to, then do not order fried food. Husband noticed the only Chinese restaurant in Long Beach and I thought why not. Being Chinese American, I can appreciate well done Chinese American fare. I wanted to like this place but found the flavors lacking. We got the special beef chow mein thinking it was Hong Kong style where noodles are fried crisp then the meat, vegetable, gravy softens and flavors the noodles but still getting crispy bits. This was not the case. It seemed to be soft almost somen type noodles. Husband disliked the texture. We also got orange chicken. He liked it. To me it was like chicken nuggets in overly sweet orange sauce. Service was good. There was only one server doing everything from taking orders, making drinks, being cashier. Be kind she showed up to work. The hot and sour soup was ok, probably the best part of our meal. So dinner set us back $45 which includes tip was not bad. Perhaps next trip to Long Beach we will give Chen's another try. I like supporting POC businesses when we travel. read more

This is gonna be a no.... Firstly the building is not heated. The egg rolls were huge and very cakey and doughy, kind of tasted like a pancake. The orange chicken and chow mein wasn't edible. Pot stickers were alright but wet inside. Not to mention very expensive for what you're getting! $$$. And no sauce for pot stickers. It all tasted a bit like frozen food that was past its expiration date that had freezer burn. Do not eat here! read more

I have been coming here for years. There food has always been pretty consistently good. Last night I got dinner to go and it was really on point! I ordered two pick your own combination plates. I love that they do that, I hardly ever see that on Chinese restaurant menus. You get a ton of food and it's really reasonably priced. I got a two item plate and a four item plate for $23!
