Ordering take out on the phone, after giving my CC # the person on phone asks how much tip I want to give and says "the choices are 15%, 20%, 25%, or zero". WHAT? I questioned this and they said you can choose your own amount. First, WHY am I asked for a tip for a take out order?! Second, 25%? Are you kidding me? I felt shamed into agreeing to give a tip and yet when I said 10% seems more reasonable they said "that's not an option." Then when I mentioned that it would have to be zero then if 15% is minimum they want, they took the 10%. I do not think I will order there again as pressuring customers into tipping ANY amount for take out is pretty ridiculous in itself. Trying to manipulate customers into paying an absurdly high tip for takeout is offensive. TO LORENDA: A caller placing a pick up/take out food ordered should NOT be asked for a tip, period, and have to then worry what happens if they say no. You need to stop that behavior. read more

Himani is an attractive fairly large restaurant and we are glad we went there. For an Indian restaurant the prices are moderate. Our dinner was excellent. The naan is unusually fluffy. We loved the spinach bajji, not knowing in advance what it is. We shared a Navara Koorma, a vegetarian curry. Is it authentic? We have no idea but the personnel are Indian. I'm always leery walking into a restaurant and being the only person there. The food was cooked quickly, palak paneer, which came with more rice than the main dish. if you're impatient/in a hurry, don't come here! the food took a while to come out. but i assumed that was because they're a smaller business that's staffed for a slower tuesday afternoon shift, and that their food is pretty freshly made too they also clearly mark what's dairy- and gluten-free, which was a huge help. felt safe here as someone with celiac, which requires very limiting dietary restrictions portions weren't as huge as i've grown accustomed to at most other indian restaurants, but still found them reasonable. the food wasn't groundbreaking for me, but also had no complaints! i almost never order okra, and thought the flavor was strong the waiter was also very friendly! read more

Pleasantly surprised by this Indian Restaurant in small town. We did not order large quantity of food intentionally because small town Indian Restaurants generally don't make great food. Great food - they are open good hours 6 Days a week. The selection is all your traditional favorites - and they offer mild to HOT!! in the decision of HEAT spectrum. The garlic butter Naan is the best I have had - and I could not imagine it getting any better. Currently I am on a very restrictive diet for health reasons. NO- Gluten/Dairy or Sugar (Sugar can only in the form of things like fructose in an apple)- and even then must be limited. I have never seen this gross apathetic waiter- and I tend to usually only see family. I have gone there numerous times- and it was off the hook. Will go again and again. read more

This was the worst Indian restaurant I have ever been to, and I have eaten the stuff from the mall. The food was inedible and the service was terrible. We started with the appetizer sampler. The mint sauce was watered down. The pakora was not chickpea batter, it was a puffy beer batter. The samosa had cubes of undercooked potato, had a wet green filling, and didn't taste like any samosa I have ever had. Also, the outside of it was thick and hard. The saag paneer had no seasoning and tasted like spinach with chili oil, my wife (who loves spinach ) spit it out. I tasted it, it was gross. The chicken 65 had onions, red peppers, and green peppers. It also was not cooked or seasoned correctly. It looked like and tasted like a bad fajita plate. The service was slow and in the back most of the time. The table next to us broke their water glass and no one came out for like 20 minutes and the customers just used napkins to make a dam on their table and checked their food for glass. I am not sure the people working that night had ever had Indian food before, and maybe they were just winging it. read more

This is the best Indian food I have eaten outside of India. The chai is authentic and fantastic. The spicy level of food has excellent flavors. The dosa is crisp and potatoes perfectly spiced. Only to have somebody come out from the back and say "go ahead and seat yourself anywhere." Annoying. Not welcoming. Waste of my time. Second. Filthy restaurant, absolutley horrible/rude service, very small portions and a premium price. When and if you actually get served you literally feel like your intruding on their time. Some of the most unique and delicious Indian food I've ever had. Just really off the chart flavors that are not like the things I've had at other Indian restaurants. Lots of different herbs and spices that I've never tasted before. The family that runs it and owns it are extraordinarily kind and sweet. The atmosphere is simple and cozy. Mostly people seem to be doing takeout. The food takes time for preparation, but it is well worth the wait. And the gentleman who owns the place brought me a slice of mango mousse for my birthday! It was one of the most delicious desserts I've ever eaten and I will be going back just for that dessert! I didn't even check to see if it's on the menu, but I sure hope it is because it was amazing. We had a wonderful dinner here. Felt very authentic--wonderful staff, no major complaints. Other than the cleanliness of the bathrooms and the restaurant overall (some booths had torn seating, etc). Could use some updates, but it's a much bigger restaurant than it appears to be from the outside. Lots of great choices. We learned from our mistakes by ordering appetizers that we didn't really recognize. Next time we will order at least 3 entrees from the menu directly, to share. The owner needs to fire the waiter in the front immediately. He is the guy with a blonde mullet. When we came in, he was coughing up a storm without covering his mouth. He was clearly smoking weed. He said "sit wherever you want." He gave us water and when we were ready to order, we told him we were ready. He said "okay" and walked away. We watched him in the back as he stood there on his phone. No help at all. We left as we had a weird feeling. He made the place seem filthy with his coughing and apathy. The BEST Indian food I have ever had. I have been to Himani several times and everything I have had is AMAZING! The curry is so creamy, the spices are divine, and the owner is friendly. His adorable daughter brought us water and plates, great little server. The butter garlic naan is soft and delicious. Today I had the chicken coconut korma and tried my husband's Hyderabadi lamb. Both were so good! We both ordered spicy and it was perfect. I wish they were open on Friday and Saturday since we don't live in Astoria but lunch on Sunday will have to do. I wish I could say good things but it was just disappointing. This is the lightest colored Makhani and Tika Masala I have ever tasted. There wasn't much flavor difference between the two nor was there any spice ( flavor profile) to it either. It tasted like cream and I love cream just sad. But the garlic butter Nan was fab! Stopped by this restaurant during a road trip and had a great experience! I had their extra large masala dosa which is easily two meals/portions for one person. It tasted great and was served with coconut chutney and sambar. The coconut chutney was flavorful and fantastic! The highlight of my visit was the dosa, chutney and their chai. I am picky about my chai, don't like it too sweet, too milky etc. The chai at Himani was absolutely perfectly spiced (with ginger and cardamom), not too milky or watery and not too sweet, just perfect! Highly recommend this, this place is a must visit even if it's for just their chai :) I took off 1 star for two reasons, 1) The sambar served with the dosa was not authentic, it was bland and tasted more like plain yellow dal than sambar, 2) the restaurant appeared to be severely understaffed. While I had a good experience, I could see that the single staff member onsite was struggling to manage all the orders being placed. I hope she can get more support. read more

Walked in, were told to take any seat, and were given menus and water. A few minutes later a large party walked in and sat down. We were ready to order but no one came. We kept trying to call for someone but there only seemed to be one person working. We kept trying to get his attention and then the neighboring table told us that we needed to go to the front desk and order. We were never told that and there were no signs posted that said that. We were there for 15 minutes waiting to order and then saw the one guy start taking the larger party's order at their table. The one star review has the following foundation: 1) The restaurant is frequently closed when it should be open - based on their business hours. Just yesterday (12/8/2022) the restaurant was closed during early afternoon for unknown reasons. Last summer on a hot day there was a sticker on the door - closed because it is too hot. When you travel 30 minutes to get there this is not funny. 2) The logistics are laid out to serve 6-8 people at a time. If there are more guests one has to wait for the food exceedingly long (45 Minutes plus) Despite the excellent quality food we have given up on this restaurant for the reasons above. read more

"Hole-in-the-wall" type of restaurant. As an Indian family, we thought we'd give it a shot. We had the chicken 65 app, chapatti, paneer makhani, white rice, and the large masala dosa. The horrible: paneer makhani (it was definitely warmed up and likely made weeks ago). The bad: chicken 65 - this is a staple of Hyderabad cuisine, but not good at all. Covered in this weird, red sauce that look like it had been infused with some red food coloring. The good: the rice, chapatti and dosa were surprisingly good. Likely because these dishes must be freshly made. The sambar for the dosa, however, was warmed up and old. Bottom line: If you're absolutely craving dosa, or want to try it, you'll be satisfied here. How does this place not have only 5 star reviews? Let's talk about the food... HELLO PEOPLE! It's incredible. My husband and I went for our first time after living in the area for just over a year. I'm kicking myself in the butt as we speak for only just now visiting this godsend. We order Simosas to start. They were perfectly hot with lots of flavor and amazing texture. They were served with 2 sauces, I definitely enjoyed the green sauce over the other- I honestly couldn't tell you what either of them were though. I ordered the Chicken Makhana with rice. The flavor was BOMB! Lots of chicken in the sauce, we got mild so it was perfectly spiced and the sauce itself was so buttery and delicious. I really don't know how to describe it other than I was a huge fan. My husband ordered a boneless lamb dish in an onion curry. I'm not a huge fan of lamb but I actually enjoyed the dish. The rice is perfectly cooked and of course you have to order some naan because naan. I can't wait to come back. Service was fabulous, very very very casual atmosphere so don't go in there wearing your fancy panties expecting it to be a 5 star restaurant. The food is 5 stars- that's what matters. Got take-out Monday night, garlic naan, aloo saag, veggie biryani, lamb koorma, tandoori chicken and chicken makhani (sp?) The cost was $100 and the portions were small. I ordered it all medium spicy. The food overall was bland and didn't have any heat at all. We were unimpressed- I think we make better Indian food at home with the sauce in a jar. We wanted to support a local restaurant during the COVID- we still will but not at Himani. Disappointed. read more

I really hate giving a bad review, but i was left with no choice. If an owner is to cheap to hire enough help become a professional clammer! One server, hostess, phone answerer, babysitter( although it was her own baby! That she had strapped to her back.) A kitchen that can't take special orders or requests not even try to accommodate the customer. Two young boys carrying water pitchers with little or no ice. So much for non food problems. Food was somewhat edible but not particularly enjoyable. If you enjoy fried dough the sampler is for sure your best bet! Not very good but lots of it. My wife had a lamb in a creamy tasty sauce with white rice that was good. Okay I love lamb but I like it med rare. Whoops can't do that in a tandoori oven! BS if you can cook it well done you can pull it out med rare! Meat doesn't start out well done! Very disappointed with our dining experience tonight. One more okay item the garlic naan, small reward! First went here 6 years ago and kept coming back ever since. We had the tikka and butter chicken with garlic naan just the other night. The spicy level on the tikka was high, and the flavor was really quite excellent. 10 out of 10 on the flavor, and the service! The outdoor seating was a nice touch, especially with everything that's been going on. If I had to get nit picky I would say the naan could use a light brushing of olive oil and the chicken pieces could be cut smaller. Other than those minor things, there is a lot to love about this restaurant. I've eaten Indian and Nepalese food around the world, and the flavor in their curry combined with the spicy level (some like it hot!) is as good as it gets.
