Everything was great. The sweet and sour pork was really tasty. The special chow mein was full of veggies, shrimp, beef, and chicken. One of the combo plates was very good. Portions are large. Our server was friendly and attentive. It's a homey little place. We tried it because of the great food reviews. Some reviews said service wasn't always great, but that was not our experience. We will definitely drive from Ilwaco when we want good Asian food. read more

Chen's has been around for a long time. There are two locations: Long Beach and South Bend. This review is for the South Bend restaurant. You can definitely count on a filling meal when you eat here. The portions are good. We started off with the crab puffs. They were ok. Not great, but ok. I feel like they should be called cream cheese puffs instead. The crab was nonexistent. Tasty, but not quite up to excellent crab puff status. My husband got his usual combo plate consisting of sweet and sour pork, fried shrimp, fried rice and chicken chow mein. He liked it. But he's pretty easy to please! Everything was hot and fresh tasting so that was good. I opted for the beef and broccoli. It was good, too. The carrots and broccoli weren't smooshy, the beef was tender and the gravy tasty. All pretty decent. You're not going to get fancy schmancy Chinese cuisine here, but you will get a decent Americanize Chinese meal. The restaurant itself is pretty dated. Could use a nice renovation, but it's clean. The waitress was the one excellent element during our meal. Five stars for her. She was the only one waiting tables on a very busy Friday night and she was hustling. On top of that she didn't forget one thing requested, and service delivered with a friendly smile and kind words. Definitely worthy of a hefty tip. Overall, Chen's was a decent place to eat, if you're not expecting a fine dining experience. Just good, old American Chinese food. read more

The hot & spicey soup is pretty good but forget about getting any variety in the chow mein, fried rice and just about any other dish. They are so skimpy with their ingredients, it's actually very little comparison to Chinese dishes. Lots of rice in the dishes and little else. We will not be back to this place. read more

From the outside, this place might give you second thoughts--it's the kind of spot you drive past and think, "Absolutely not." But with so many 4.5-star reviews, we decided to give it a shot, with people claiming it had the best food ever. Unfortunately, our experience couldn't have been further from that. I ordered the chow mein with crab puffs, and my girlfriend ordered the sesame chicken, pork fried rice, and barbecue pork. When my meal arrived, I quickly realized that what I was served was nowhere near chow mein. Instead, I got a pile of crispy salad toppings, bean sprouts, and onions masquerading as noodles. Against my better judgment, I took a bite. It was awful. I've had bad meals before, but this was the kind where you put the fork down and just can't keep going. My girlfriend's experience wasn't any better. She specifically asked the waiter if the barbecue pork was good, and when it arrived, it looked and tasted like microwaved, fake barbecue pork. The "sesame chicken" was equally disappointing--mostly breading with barely any chicken inside, and the sauce? Ketchup and mustard with a sprinkle of sesame seeds. It tasted more like chicken nuggets than any sesame chicken I've ever had. When we asked the waiter about it, she insisted that because there were sesame seeds, it was indeed sesame chicken. The fried rice? More like plain white rice straight from a rice cooker with soy sauce dumped on top to make it vaguely edible. What's even more surprising is that none of these meals came with any description on the menu. When you go to a Chinese restaurant, you expect a pretty standard rendition of classic dishes. To stray this far from the typical and most basic recipes is mind-boggling to me. To top it off, the service was snarky and pretentious. When we politely mentioned our concerns, we could overhear our server loudly telling the kitchen a version of events that made her sound like she was handling the situation--complete with details that weren't true. To their credit, they did offer to comp my meal and remake my girlfriend's meal. However, the customer service, the staff's attitude and loud remarks, and the terrible food had already left such a bad taste in our mouths that we just decided to leave instead. this is a great Chinese American restaurant. I have been too many in our area. we will drive out of our way to go to this restaurant. I can't speak highly enough of the crab and cheese Rangoon. I had also the almond chicken, which was delicious. My husband had the sweet-and-sour chicken with fried rice. he loved it. Generous portions. The service was attentive and friendly. The place looks like a diner inside, but that will not deter us from coming back. If you are in South Bend, please give this place a shot. read more

My favorite thing about Chen's is the build your own combo. You pick how many items and choose from the list of options. I almost always get combos at Chinese restaurants and there is often one item I don't really want but also not worth the substitution up-charge, so Chen's is perfect for picking what I want. The food is standard American Chinese, but the egg rolls are a standout. There is a lounge but we've never eaten in it. The service is good for dine in or take out. There is another Chen's in Long Beach with the same menu, but in my experience to food is better at this location. read more

I grew up hearing terrible stories about small town Chinese food restaurants. Those stories aren't true for Chen's. It's solid Chinese food and a long way from the nearest Chinatown/International District. It's also reasonably priced. This was the chow mein I was served, it appeared to be cans of dried lachoy chow mein put directly on the plate and topped with a thick clear sugary sauce. If you are in South Bend Washington and feel like lunch or dinner, think about Chinese food cause it is there! Ya, no kidding and who would have thought! A small little piece of the orient well set up for Corona. The Pork appetizer was vey flavorful and prompt, the combo meals were very nice portions and full of flavor as well. The combos come with rice, 2 mains and a chow mien and all were very tasty as well. The shrimp tempura was a special note with a crisp and light batter over the main piece of shrimp. A single order of almond chicken was very generously proportioned and very tasty as well, even a little more tasty cause I stole it off my wife's plate. Super nice people, good service, large food portions. I see some reviews that don't seem very fair to me. I live in Seattle and have access to some of the best Chinese food in the country. Is Chen's like some of the super authentic places I've been too to get dim sum, jiaozi, Xiao long bao, and stir fried rice cakes? No, it's not. Chen's has to cater to the local populous around South Bend and Raymond. That means they have to serve the Americanized Chinese food you find in much of the rest of the rural US. What it boils down to is you get good food at a good price and there's plenty of it. And I think that is all one can really ask for; especially in a town with a total of like 4 places to actually sit down and eat food. Bonus tip: Chen's does breakfast too. And It's good! read more

Better than expected! Was VERY pleasantly surprised that the food was so flavorful and yummy. Food is prepared fresh, hot and delicious. Nice surprise, they serve cocktails! My wife's aunt was turning 100, and she wanted Chinese food for her birthday, so we took her and some friends of hers to Chen's. We'd never dined there and weren't sure how it would work out. The food was very good-huge portions, hot and tasty. The service was excellent, and when the server found out Auntie was having her 100th birthday they didn't charge her. How nice was that? For food snobs Chen's might not work for you. It's Chinese American, so you're not going to get authentic Chinese. But you are going to get a solid meal and great service at a good price. read more

Or, they are so desperate to have a meal, that they will chuck anything down their throat. There are few choices along the way here, especially after dark. What can I say - I love this place! Long before there was pho on every corner, back when the only ramen you could get was a $0.25 square of dried noodles, there existed the classic American Chinese restaurant - and Chen's is it! It's like the Chinese restaurants I remember from my 70's and 80's childhood except way fresher preparation. The veggies are crisp and fresh, the meats and seafoods tender. The owners are always friendly and remember us even though we don't get through town often. It has a small town family kind of feel. So back to the food! I always get an order of BBQ. It's consistently thick, flavorful and juicy, more like a good pork roast than the dried stuff you get at some restaurants. It comes with a dipping sauce, sweet with a hint of mustardy bite. My favorite is the House Special Chow Mein with pan fried noodles - nice thin noodles to roll around in the light sauce with a wide variety of meat and seafood and a good balance of veggies, all in a very generous portion. The fried rice is American classic just like you'd expect. My mom is a huge fan of the General Tso's - spicy and flavorful - so that's almost always in the lineup. And if you have a vegetarian in your crew, go for the Spicy Tofu (which I think is the Mar Po Tofu w/o pork). I've tried to find a tofu dish up in Olympia that I like as much as Chen's spicy tofu, but I haven't found one yet. So, if you haven't tried Chen's yet, I highly recommend it. And you'll likely also have leftovers for days! read more

Don't go there for breakfast!! Eggs were so underdone it was in edible, food was under seasoned and bland. My husbands food came out 10 minutes before mine. I ended up paying $6 for toast and some tomato slices, they did take off $1.50 for the eggs. Staff was friendly but won't be going back. So disappointed!! read more

Wow, how surprising to find really good Chinese food in this little town! Best food in South Bend asks I'd bet it rates near the top of all Chinese foid in WA. You should definitely try the Egg Flower Soup! I had the Kung Pao and Sweet and Sour Chicken. I tried the Chicken Egg Foo Yung and it was awesome but the top prize here are their egg rolls! Options are limited in South Bend and I didn't want to go to a diner or a fish restaurant so I decided to give Chens a try. The parking lot was super busy which I took as a good sign. Decor felt more like a diner than a Chinese restaurant but it was clean and I was greeted with a warm smile. The menu is pretty typical - kind of surprised they didn't have any lunch specials. I ordered the spicy tofu and veggies. It was a huge portion and served piping hot. The veggies were fresh and cooked perfectly. The tofu was abundant and yummy. Now, I am not a huge fan of Chinese food so I can't say it was the most delicious thing I ever ate but overall I enjoyed my meal. Agree with the other reviewers, the waitress was efficient and very nice - and she was the only waitress so I was impressed. read more
