Worse dinner ever!! Food was so burnt and hard you couldn't recognize it was food. I was brought a replacement and it was just as burnt and hard... totally inedible. When we complained to the waitress, we were kicked out of Cheryl's Diner. Being local, we have ate there many, many times. It was a destination. A pleasant one in the past. Unfortunately before I got to eat here, I left. I was told to sit outside on a round table with my little kids. I saw the sun just beaming down on the only two round tables so I opted to just sit on the square table under the shade. Not a minute went by when the host(waitress) came out the door and across the patio yelled " I said sit at a round table!" Ok, excuse me? First off, don't ever yell at me, I'm an adult. We live locally and haven't been here in a few months. We wanted to have a late lunch early breakfast and decided to give Cheryl's another try. Honestly not very good. Wife's cheeseburger was ok. Fries were hot. I ordered breakfast. I got stale cold hash browns that were past crunchy. My biscuits and gravy were cold. Omelette was decent. We've had mediocre food there in the past but were hoping for a better experience. The real shame was being charged 8.80 for two diet cokes. I had a big group of 9 so we just sat at close tables instead of moving the patio furniture. There's umbrellas and awning for shade outside, inside are tables for families of 4-6. A lot of staff available to bus the table, refill waters and coffee. Food arrived fast and hot. 3 hot sauces available- Tabasco, chalula, and tapatio.... no Sriracha... so save some packets from home and bring them. Friendly staff, on the road parking, fast service. It was my first time visiting Kernville and from the looks of it it looked like a nice place. Terrible customer service me and my family sat down and it was not a busy time at all, it took over an hour to get our food and to add on, the male cooker and one of the servers went to the back and made out. Everyone in my table could see them and they went back and meanwhile our waiter was just sitting on her phone right in front of us. The small, southern Sierra Nevada town of Kernville, CA is noted for it's breathtaking location, on the Kern River, at the head of Lake Isabella, along with endless outdoor activities, such as camping, white water rafting, fishing, hunting, exploring, and just about anything "outdoors" that you can think of. When it comes to fine dining, Kernville is also known as the home of Chery'ls Diner, which serves some of the best foodin the southern Sierra Nevada mountains, and the Sequoia National Forest. Cheryl's Diner is owned and operated by Cheryl and Lanny Borthick, a local couple, and has been serving fine breakfast, lunch and dinner since the restaurant opened, back in January, 1985. I had become aquatinted about this fine restaurant through social media, and I was looking forward to a great breakfast, meeting the staff, and meeting Cheryl and Lanny. There are two dining rooms, one with a counter, and a comfortable outdoor patio to choose from, for your dining pleasure. I decided to sit at the counter, as the kitchen is located just behind the counter, where I could chit-chat with the staff, and watch them in action. The breakfast menu at Cheryl's Diner features all of your favorites, all of your breakfast classics, and has all breakfast bases covered. After scanning the menu, I went with "Canadian Bacon and Eggs," as it sounded good on this Saturday morning. Cheryl's is serious about breakfast, as breakfast is served any time the restaurant is open. Just inside the entrance to the restaurant, there's a piano, where Cheryl herself, who is a talented pianist, belts out a honky tonk number, which is her favorite genre of music. I love ragtime and honky tonk, and I really enjoyed Cheryl's fine piano playing! How many other diners in Kern County can post of an owner who plays a "mean" honky tonk piano? From the "Egg Dishes" section of the breakfast menu, I ordered "Canadian Bacon and Eggs," along with hash brown potatoes, two eggs, and sourdough toast. For some reason, today I wasn't in the mood for biscuits and gravy, which is a rare thing for me. I hadn't enjoyed Canadian bacon for many months, and it sounded good to me. My two slices of Canadian bacon were sliced nice and thick, cooked perfectly tender and juicy, and were absolutely delicious. Cheryl's doesn't skimp on portion size, nor does the diner use inferior meat, as this the "real deal," premium bacon. Other meat choices for the identical breakfast include ham, sausage, bacon or ground beef. Steak, naturally, commands a higher price. The breakfast includes two eggs cooked any style, and as per my de facto standard, I ordered my two eggs fried, over easy, and they arrived perfectly over easy, just the way I ordered them. One of the benchmarks of a good breakfast chef, when asked to fry eggs over easy, is to cook them that way, and the chef at Cheryl's nailed this one, as my eggs were cooked perfectly. My best regards to the chef... For sides, you choose between country potatoes, hash browns or fruit. I always have a hard time choosing between hash brown or country potatoes, as I love potatoes, but today I went with hash browns, and I never looked back. My breakfast included a large helping of perfectly cooked hash brown potatoes, finely shredded, golden brown on the outside, with tender and juicy inside, just the way fine hash browns should be cooked. The sourdough toast was perfectly toasted, arrived hot, with lots of melted butter. Oh yes!!!! Cheryl's Diner serves a superior breakfast, served by super-friendly staff, and is both a mecca and a paradise for breakfast lovers! I can't wait to try one of their burger on my next visit... Not only does Cheryl's Diner serve amazing food, the staff, led by Cheryl herself, is among the friendliest restaurant staff that I've ever had the pleasure to meet, they will welcome you, and they will treat you like family. After posting my first review, a couple years later we had an issue which we brought up. But it did slow us down from going to Cheryl's. Well we went back again and tried it and I am so glad we did. 1st off there Friday night all you can eat fish is out of this world!!! I love it. 2nd Wednesday night tacos are amazing. Their steaks are cooked to perfection, I know your saying Cheryl's steaks. Yes and I am a steak person. They did get new cooks, oh and the wait times cause we do time are between 12-20 min it depends on what you order and how busy. We went to another restaurant and we waited 1-1/2 hours for their special. So I will wait that extra 10 min for Cheryl's. Oh and now they serve Beer and Wine! read more

During this crazy time, it's kind of nice to see some things that are comforting. During my time at kernville today, I went to attend the local Kern River stampede rodeo. I understood that there's no food vendors at the rodeo grounds due to certain rules. So I snuck out and drove to Cheryl's. Now this was at 12:30 p.m. on a Saturday. Seeing how it was packed, I can understand why the service was a little slow to respond to take my order. Also the food was a little bit longer and preparation than I expected. But I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Unfortunately I was not too surprised nor elated about the food when it finally came. I order the cowboys sandwich which was roast beef and Swiss cheese on grilled sourdough bread. Also came along was the fries. What I received was a three way chopped up sandwich and a small smattering of fries. It was underwhelming. The service was fair. They were very busy though. The biscuits and gravy were OK, one of the biscuits was kind of burnt and gravy was warm, not hot. The eggs and hash browns were very good, however, the sausage links tasted like they were microwaved. I stopped by this diner on a recommendation from a colleague, I was going to be driving through the town on my way to camp in Sequoia. On our way back home is when we decided to stop in for breakfast, the food was really great! I had the chicken fried steak, and potatoes, while my kids had the pancakes. No complaints with the food it was delicious! There was a bit of a wait after putting in our orders to get our food, but they were pretty busy and the food was well worth it. To top it off - their customer service is fantastic! I actually forgot my wallet in our booth and didn't realize it until about 2 hours away, I called and they did have it. What an amazing place! We decided go there because the reviews were a mix, and everyones perception is different. I had an early dinner, grilled chicked with a baked potato and side salad. My daughter had 2 blueberry pancakes which were HUGE! After our afternoon fun we went back for dessert. We had a rainbow sorbet and peanutbutter chocolate pie! The service was nice. After tubing down the Kern River, we were starved. This place was recommended to us. It was close to the River and it sounded good. When we went inside, they weren't to busy. The staff was very friendly. The place looked clean. You can either eat at the counter or choose a booth. We decided upon the booth. There was a table outside, but since there was ashes falling down from a nearby fire, we opted against it. I ordered a tuna sandwich. It was good, but the serving size was definitely smaller than I am used to. It came with a bag of chips thank goodness! Would I come back? Probably, but I think I would check out the other places. Just finished eating at Cheryl's Diner in Kernville on Whiskey Flat Days. Very busy and it is a little wait but they are so efficient in getting you to your table. They have a young lady, named Natalie, 17 years old, walking table to table throughout your meal asking if you need anything. First time to Cheryl's Diner and they'd only been reopen (post COVID) for about a week. Appreciated they had followed guidelines for distancing patrons (not all tables open), and were sanitizing after every customer. My family came in midday, wanting both breakfast and lunch, and Cheryl's could accomodate all of us! Standard Diner menu, but nothing wrong with that. Good, fresh-tasting food that was filling, and fairly priced. So why not more stars? Quite simply, an unusually long wait for our food on a slow Monday! There were other patrons, but no one waiting, and plenty of servers -- but for whatever reason, it took awhile to get our order in, and then about 40 minutes to get pretty standard breakfast and lunch fare. Little pet peeve of mine is when you are unusually slow, you should apologize for the wait and let us know what's going on -- but we had to ask. I ordered an open faced steak sandwich medium rare, which showed up done tough and chewy, the fries and side salad were good at least. My boyfriends food was cold, it took a long time to get us the check too I finally went in and paid because I had other places to be.
