Came in with my husband and friends, immediately saw red flags when our drink order was taken and the waitress served our silverware while grabbing the serving portion of the utensils. Then immediately after another employee was sweeping the floor and dumped the trash in the food bins while another employee bussed tables and tossed finished dishes into the SAME bin. There was no effort to even hide this, the bin was near the tables right next to the host podium. This is an extreme health code violation! Employees were also eating and talking with food in their mouth while serving food and you could see the saliva pouring everywhere. We couldn't bare the thought of eating food here. We honestly felt bad to express our concerns so we told them that we had a family emergency and would gladly pay for our drinks. This place was gross- flys everywhere, it was hot and stuffy, the servers had conversations across the diner, one server complained loudly about customers, the servers prepare beverages, toast, condiments at the back counter in view of the customers- while doing so they wipe their noses with their hands and then handle toast and butter. Well it didn't start off promising. I was seated but then forgotten about while others that were seated after me were attended to. When my server did arrive she was pleasant and apologetic. For some reason they had run out of flatware so she brought me plastic utensils, fortunately by the time my food arrived she replaced it with regular flatware. There was a table of 4 next to me that waited about 10-15 minutes to have their order taken. They didn't appear to be understaffed, so I'm not quite sure what the problem was, it just seemed as though there wasn't a well organized system in place. I am Mexican and have a heavy accent that a college education in law did not get rid off. I am also a software developer and that did not help my accent either. I called today 7-24-25 around 10:30am to speak with a manager because someone had charged $73 for a meal there using my credit card and after calling in a dispute to my bank I called this place because LUCKILY I HAVE NEVER BEEN TO THIS WHAT I CONSIDER TO BE (based on my experience) A RACIST PLACE and I am trying to find out who used my card. I spoke with Marlee, who became rude and abusive as soon as I started speaking, she became even more angry when I said why I was calling so I asked to speak with a manager and she said there was no manager on site. She also said in a condescending manner "I can assure that nobody is using your card here". When I asked how could she know that and why does a charge appear on my credit card she became even more argumentative and abusive and I had to hang up. I called back less than a minute later and "Sandy" the owner's daughter answered. She was incredibly abusive and condescending and screaming at me she said to call the bank and file a dispute and to stop bothering them. I had to hang up on her as well. I do not know if we were just not the server's cup of tea or if LORI is just racist. From the beginning, she was so rude. We went in there to have a good time and with the best spirits, so I don't understand why she felt the need to be rude. First off, she was very short with us, and when we asked her questions, she would answer with "it's in the menu" or she would just answer with a question, trying to make us feel dumb. We waited for an hour for our food, meanwhile, three other tables that got there after us got their food first! Once we got our food, the country-fried steak was cold and thick and was not chewable. I took two bites out of the steak and complained right away. I asked her politely to take it off the check, and instead, she asked for the plate back and took it to the kitchen without giving any explanation. When she came back, she said that she was able to cut right through it and that she wouldn't remove the entrees. After complaining further, she said she would remove 5% off the entrees, and she didn't even have the decency to give us our check; she asked one of the hosts to bring it to us. The town is very small so rush hour is at 8 and every restaurant gets busy. Surprisingly, Cheryl's wasn't busy and we ate dinner here. I just had a hamburger with fries and I have to say they have one of the best fries I've tasted. Service was spectacular both times. Listen your options are limited for good eats on the way home from Kern River so lower your expectations and you might be ok eating here. Most everything is out of a can so don't expect "homemade" - including the coffee mate creamers - don't ask for basic cream. The Reuben sandwich is a good safe bet for eating though I don't recommend any of the egg dishes - definitely stay away from the Benedict. Service can be spotty but they do have a decent amount of outside patio tables so if you have a big group, they can probably accommodate. Plenty of parking so that's a plus. I didn't call her out by name or use the specific word in the review, so as not to offend the woman being called the slur. I have now been to Cheryl's Diner twice during my fishing trips to Kernville. I absolutely love it! First trip - chili dogs and fries. DELICIOUS! Second trip - French dip & tuna melt, both with fries. I am a sucker for a good tuna melt and this was to die for. The food is always great here and the service is impeccable. All the workers I have seen both times have been sweet, and helpful. Price is very affordable for the food you get as well. For COVID dining they have outdoor seating, distanced tables and the staff wears masks. Love it. Outside tables also have umbrellas to shade you when the sun is at its brightest. This diner is busy with locals. They know when you're not from the area and make sure you feel it too. Food is bland and customer service is not your usual American customer service. We had a wide variety of menu items, and your safest bet is eggs or an omelette. Anything else and be prepared to be unimpressed. The pancakes were rubbery and the coffee tasted like dirt. Another friend said the frozen waffles at the convenient store are better than the waffles here. The egg whites I had were cooked well and my dog wouldn't even eat the potatoes. The food overall lacked flavor and... salt while customer service was filled with salt. Not even the fruit was fresh.
