the owner is a fraud. he will not let you cancel your membership and ignore you for months if you dare to usher the word cancel. he will continue to charge you for as long as possible and ban you from the club once the cancellation has been finalized. I requested 4 times to cancel my membership over the past year over the phone. Each time the club says "only the manager can do it, and she isn't in." They keep charging my card, I am reporting them to the police. I suggest everyone who is encountering the same issue do so as well. read more

I have been a member of Chevy Chase Athletic Club for almost 9 years. They have a great facility with many activities you can join. The staff are friendly and helpful. The gym has all the equipment you need to do a full work out including free weights, machines, and cardio equipment. There are two spacious studios for members to use for classes. The locker room also has showers and saunas. In addition, the two strong programs here are racquetball and Krav Maga. A team of professional trainers here are highly qualified. The membership fee is very reasonable. I highly recommend Chevy Chase Athletic Club. read more

I moved to Chevy Chase two years ago, and a friend recommended this gym to me. I was amazed at how large the gym is and how classy the environment is. Being on the 18th floor, the cardio room offers a stunning view of downtown DC and the neighboring Chevy Chase area. I really like that they have several types of pull-up platforms and they also have a range of kettlebells. The gym houses two bustling programs: a squash program and a Krav Maga program. I cannot wait to try the Krav Maga program. I like that the gym validates 2.5 hours for parking and that they have shower and steam rooms. And the memberships are very affordable - I only pay $69 per month (compared to $100+ at other gyms I tried). The owner, Steve, is very welcoming. He always asks me how my workout was and how my family is doing. I definitely recommend Chevy Chase Athletic Club to my friends. read more

We moved to the neighborhood about two weeks ago, and I was searching Yelp for a local gym. I read Amina V.'s review of CCAC and decided to check it out -- we stopped in for a visit and we were greeted by a very friendly guy who gave us a tour of the gym, told us about rates (it was pretty reasonably priced), and gave us two week passes to work out. Everything sounded great- no sign up sheets for machines, none of those silly 30 minute restrictions on machines. I definitely noticed that it was an older crowd (I would guess that the average age in there was about 50), and that it didn't seem super-high energy, but still I was feeling really good about CCAC when we left, and I was convinced that we would become members. We went back a couple of days later for our workout, and our workout experience convinced me that it just wasn't the right place for me. Let me set the scene: it's August in DC. It's really, really hot. And the cardio room at CCAC is only moderately air conditioned (and my use of the word "moderate" is generous). The way that members deal with this, it seems, is by grabbing a fan and angling it towards them while they work out. This means that the cardio area, which is pretty small, is an obstacle course of plugs and fans (which, I'll confess, didn't seem that safe to me). It also means that the cardio room felt, at least to me, to be an unhealthy kind of hot. After 25 minutes on the elliptical, I felt like I had been running outside in the hundred degree heat. The other real minus is that the cardio equipment is really jumbled - rather than having two rows of ellipticals, and one row of treadmills, the cardio equipment is just sort of arranged wherever it fits. The weight room was considerably better than the cardio room (and cooler too), and I suspect because it's cooler than the cardio room, it's also more crowded. More than anything, the CCAC feels like it's not supposed to be a gym - clearly they have inherited this space and tried to make it work, but it's all kind of clumsy and illogical. I don't need a fancypants gym - I'm not looking for machines with TVs, members lounges with cappuccino, or fancy locker rooms. But I do think logically arranged equipment and well functioning air conditioning are prerequisites for a good gym. read more

I really have to compliment the customer service here. I bought a 20-session pass from Groupon back at the end of the year and have been coming here a few times a week to do some strength and conditioning since then. About two weeks ago I lost my pass (which is just a card that gets hole-punched for every visit). I looked everywhere for it but couldn't find it and I knew that if it was lost then I likely wouldn't be able to get my sessions back as they were not being electronically recorded. I had 9 visits left so I figured I'd call and see if I had left it at the gym. I called the front desk and talked to a guy who I presume is the manager. I told him my situation and he took down my name and told me to stop by and that he would print me another pass for my 9 sessions. I was absolutely thrilled as he could've simply told me that they couldn't do that since there is no way to prove how many visits I had left, but he gave me the benefit of the doubt. I can't say enough about a place with this kind of trust and honesty and once the rest of my visits are up, I'll be back to sign up for a membership. As far as the actual gym goes, it's very spacious and has great views of the city in the cardio room. They have racquetball courts, free weights, machines, cardio equipment, showers, saunas, nice facilities and the staff is very friendly and helpful. In addition there are tons of classes available for all sorts of interests, from Zumba to Boxing to Yoga to Pilates, and there's even an MMA school that holds classes here, and the gym is conveniently located off the Friendship Heights metro. IMO, good customer service goes a long way and they've definitely provided that here. read more

The place is not clean. Stuff that is broken or unneeded is kind of stowed wherever they can find room so it's cluttered. AC is marginal at best. Soap in the showers is in dishwashing containers with the labels torn off, smells really cheap, and I can never figure out which container is shampoo, which is soap. This week, they had a dryer fire that burnt all the towels. And instead of contracting with a laundry company for a couple of weeks to make sure they continue to have towels, or buying new towels and using a laundromat to wash them, they simply told everyone there are no towels and there won't be any towels for god knows how long. Why? Apparently, the owner is too cheap (I've heard that from some of the trainers as well). The towels were the last straw. I quit this club after having been a member for 2+ years. So, why was I a member? Proximity to work, inertia, reasonably priced, not crowded, adequate equipment, convenient hours. It's not fancy with beautiful decor, soothing music in the locker rooms, boutique soaps etc... all that stuff is a total waste of money to me anyway. This place has potential, but me thinks it'll never realize it under current ownership. read more

CCAC has been there forever. It's like other gyms except they train and host the only squash championships in DC. Then they have Krav marga. The energy and mix of martial arts, tournaments players with gym regulars make working out at CCAC a good mental and physical break. Having attended many gyms in the area, my personal preference is the staff. The bonus: Climbing upto the 18th floor (penthouse) where the gym is located, is a workout in itself! read more

The gym itself is nice, but the employees are so poorly organized, and some of them rude, that it makes it too much of a headache to be worth it. I filled out my termination paperwork with an employee on-site 45 days in advance of the end of my contract (30 days is required). I still got charged at the end of my contract, and it took four weeks to receive a refund after sending multiple emails and calling multiple times. Someone informed me the person in charge of billing was indisposed; that is understandable. But when I finally got someone on the phone, they accused me of not handing in my termination paperwork. I can only guess the employee who helped me with the termination papers had not filed it. I had been more than understanding about the situation, but received only curt replies, none at all, or rude accusations when talking to the club. I was finally refunded only because I contacted them 9 times. I was the one who was inconvenienced, and was rudely treated as if the situation were my fault. read more

They cancel classes TO MUCH! The owner doesn't keep his promises. He will YELL at you if you give him negative feed back about his club and then kick you out. They will draft your ACCOUNT TWICE AND NOT GIVE YOU A REFUND. His instructor's and employees complain that he never pays pay checks on time and that he DUCKS them on pay day. His trainers say he steals their clients and gives them to other trainers that he favors. The employees say he has bounced their checks over and over again and he won't refund the NSF fees! The owner is awful and a fraud. He puts out Groupons and then does not honor them. I bought a 3 month Groupon for $79 that said you can "activate it until Nov. 30th" then its good for 3 months. I went into to activate this week and he said its only good through November. When I asked him to read the print on the Groupon, he screamed at me in front of other members telling me he's not honoring the Groupon and that I'm never welcome back into the gym. The ONLY reason I bought the Groupon is because they have the best Step instructor in town. I've been in this gym before and its old, run down, dirty, and a dump, but was willing to ignore the rest of the gym and come in only for the classes. Recently they had a flood and the place stunk for days. Another time they had no towels. Half of the equipment is old and doesnt work. And yet they are trying to suck people in with fraudulent use of Groupons then get them to sign up for memberships that are twice the price of other newer, cleaner gyms. I've already reported them to Groupon. I rarely ever submit reviews on Yelp, but I felt people should know about the horrible fraululent gym owner and beware. read more

A friend of mine and I bought a Groupon for 10 sessions so that we could do Zumba together on Tuesday nights. Before purchasing, my friend called the gym and asked about the class and whether or not it was going to continue taking place on Tuesdays, etc. and they assured her that it was. A spacious gym with a scenic view, modern equipment, and a friendly staff is always welcome. The fact that this gym has extended hours, and is partly secluded from the hustle & bustle of the rest of the DC/Chevy Chase/Bethesda area allows for the members to relax & not feel like they're competing with a crowd. I've yet to attend any of the many classes that this gym offers, but plan to do so in the near future. When you speak with the employees/trainers/instructors, you will definitely get a sense of their expertise. This is a metro-accessible, reasonably priced gym with a modern decor. Frequent class cancellations + poor customer = don't go here. I signed up for a mat Pilates class at Chevy Chase Athletic Club through MetaBody. I received a reminder email in advance of the class. Unfortunately, I did not receive a cancellation notification. So, I drove down to CCAC where I was notified that the class was actually canceled. The receptionist told me that there was no way for CCAC to notify customers of cancellations. He also told me that classes are canceled fairly frequently. Came here with a 20 day groupon, and I really liked this gym. It doesnt have all the bells and whistles that a place like sport&health or WSC has, but its good for what I needed: basic weight room and cardio. The staff is really friendly, and dont try to pressure you into anything like a used car salesman some other gyms do. If they are walking by you and your form isnt right they will correct you. The owner Mr. White is super cool and took time out his day every time he was walking by me to help me with my squat form. The one problem I had is that it does get a little hot in the room, and this was in may. If you want a laid back atmosphere gym and and just need basic equipment like weights, this is the place for you. If you want a bells and whistles gym, go somewhere else. read more

This place is huge! With great views from the 18th floor and free underground parking, you can't go wrong. There are free towels, a squash court. The locker room has private showers and the machines have individual tv's. I love using the sauna and steam room after a hard workout. I have been coming here for years and even if I move out Chevy Chase, I will always go back to this place. It is a must. The personal trainers are great and will bust your butt. read more

I am giving 1 start because I cannot give only half. This is the worst gym ever. Horrible desk service, horrible and irresponsible owner. The facilities are also not great. They keep constantly changing the layout of the rooms and removing machines to make space for the Krava Maga room. The classes keep being canceled and you are not informed in advance, so you get there and "ups... canceled". Also, if you want to quit your membership GOOD LUCK! you will be charged many months after that. So if you want a gym for some cardio, and group class exercises DO NOT GO HERE! read more

While Chevy Chase Athletic Club is not the most high end gym around, it offers everything one could need and for a reasonable price too. It has many treadmills, ellipticals and stairmasters as well as a generous variety of weight machines and a large rack of dumbells that range from 2 to 65 lbs. None of the machines have time limits either. It also has two squash courts and a large, open exercise room. What really seals the deal with this gym is the staff. Classes including pilates, yoga and boxing are taught by very skilled and helpful staff. For several months now I've been getting free weight training help from the owner of the gym and he has always been quite kind and helpful, I have seen a large increase in my own strength since I began working with him. All in all, I couldn't ask for a better gym. read more

Don't waste your time or your money. After checking the schedule I purchased the Living Social coupon with the idea that I would supplement the Wednesday night Zumba class that takes place after work. I managed to get in one class then it was all downhill. I arrived on Sunday June 3 and was told that Sunday classes had been cancelled for the summer. This evening I rushed from work to attend the Friday class that was scheduled for 5:30 and was told (along with 6 other women) by a representative of Tonned that Friday night classes are off the schedule indefinely. Joined mostly for Squash and have been super satisfied. Great squash community that has been cultivated by Rod and Connie Barnes. Juniors, beginners, men, women - everyone is welcomed and encouraged to play. Courts are only about a year old and among the best in the area. Can't speak to the classes. I am new to the area, so I searched for a nearby (Friendship Heights Metro) gym on Facebook and came across the Crunch and the Chevy Chase Athletic Club. I wanted to try each place out before I signed up, so I went to Crunch first. I talked to Crunch's front desk staff and I received a 1-day pass and a brief tour. The gym was clean and a decent size, but it was pretty overcrowded and hectic. Personally, I am not a big fan of hip-hop blasting over the speakers and waiting for my turn to use weights or a machine. However, a gym is a gym, and I was able to get my workout in. Afterward, I went back to the front desk just to feel them out on the membership process. I learned there were no more free passes and if I wanted to sign up it would be a one-year commitment with a few registration fees. All in all, it was a typical metro style gym and I had a good sense for it after one day. Next up, I went to the Chevy Chase Athletic Club. I loved the location from the get-go. First, it is placed right next to the Friendship Heights Metro Station. Secondly, the gym is located in the Penthouse of the Barlow Building. I just love the idea of being in a Penthouse for a workout. It makes me feel important (haha). Like Crunch, I approached the front desk and told them about my situation. The staff was more professional (communicating and looking) and gave me a full tour of the gym. It was big, covering the entire top floor of the office building. The cardio side has windows that overlook all of Friendship Heights (which is a beautiful sight). There were squash courts (something I had not played since summer camp in New Hampshire), which was exciting. They had multiple group exercise rooms (something I am not into, but my girlfriend loves, so I thought I would mention it). The free weights and weight machines portion of the gym was large and exactly what I was looking for. And the men's locker room was tidy with a steam room (my favorite thing to do after a workout), sauna, and personal showers. So the tour was impressive, but it really came down to my workout experience. I received a free one-week pass and started lifting that day. My first workout (in the morning) went great - it was quiet, clean, and I had access to all the weights and machines without waiting in line. I finished up with a steam and I was on my way. I went back a few more times that week, sometimes in the morning, sometimes in the afternoon, and just like my first workout, the gym was always peaceful and whatever exercise I wanted to do, the equipment was available. So after my free one-week trial, I looked into the signing up process at the Club. It was fairly simple, there were no enrollment fees, I would get a very fair discount on the first month, and every payment following that would be month to month (rather than a year commitment at Crunch). When it came down to the numbers, Chevy Chase's membership was pretty much the same as Crunch (monthly), and there were no hidden fees or long-term obligations. The decision was easy, I chose the Chevy Chase Athletic Club. I have been extremely happy with my decision and I have actually gotten some friends and co-workers to join the Club as well. I know everyone looks for something different in a gym, but the Club was a perfect fit for me. Between the two gyms, it comes down to preference, either calm and serene with awesome views (Chevy Chase Athletic Club), or chaotic and congested with basement views (Crunch). I've been a member of the LA fitness signature gym for over 10 years, so when I decided to switch to a private gym for convenience I had a lot of reservations. To my surprise CCAC has everything I need in a quiet setting without having to deal with the hustle bustle of "rush hour." It's quite nice when you nearly have the entire gym to yourself! Some of the cardio machines have personal TV's which is definitely a plus when it comes down to knocking out those dreaded cardio days. But what I have been most impressed with are the employees. They are always very friendly and inspire motivation! When I signed to the gym, I was given a free session with one of the trainers Jon Bernfeld from Dcfitnesstrainer.com. I was definitely very skeptical because I have been athletic my whole life and I know my way around the gym. Nonetheless I took the session and ended up sinning up full time!! I had never had a trainer before, but Jon has really helped me switch things up and I immediately saw results! His high energy and motivating attitude promotes exciting and challenging circuits and I'm always looking forward to my next session! Jon really listens to my goals and personalizes a training regimen for my body type. I highly recommend Jon at CCAC for novice and experts alike! read more
