I am in my 50s and I do not work out. I had an introductory session and trusted the trainers knew what they were doing and they do not! One size does not fit all and they think that is the case. One of the exercises was to jump up and grab a bar Above my head and if possible, which it absolutely was not, do a pull-up. I jumped up grabbed the bar and I hung there and that was perfectly fine, or so I thought. I am not the expert nor do I have the educational background that they do and they should have never let me do that because as a direct result, I have a torn rotator cuff, which is excruciatingly painful and is preventing me from doing anything. I joined in September of 2023 after a very hard year with long COVID that affected my lungs and made it hard to exercise. At 48, I was a bit nervous and intimidated by the idea of cross fit. Diana was amazing and really took her time to help me with my form and confidence before I stared joining classes. All the instructors helped me scale the workouts and increase my resistance and strength. In less than a year I feel amazing--stronger and able to go out for runs! And as a bonus I lost 20 pounds. The place is welcoming and clean. Coaches like Steve will help you develop you're mobility and skills. He sets up each workout station which is beyond expectations. The members are friendly and inviting and some are very elite athletes in the box which is motivating. I've also observed coaches like Ray train private clients and you can see the progress overtime while respecting the level of the level of the client and watching it grow. Diana, the owner/manager, ensures the box is clean, inviting, billing is accurate and member events happen consistently. If you are considering CrossFit this is a great box to join. read more

I travel a bit for work and always try to drop-in to different CrossFit boxes in the area. Usually, I have to Uber to a box, but Tough Temple/CrossFit Bethesda was conveniently located across the street from my hotel. As a drop-in, it was a bit confusing process in comparison to experiences I've had with other boxes. I emailed ahead of time and got information from Andrew. He said I could drop-in on any day, at any time and the fee would be $20. The first confusing point were the classes on Wodify. Since there are two locations, you would have to know which you were going to (Tough Temple or CrossFit Bethesda). Obviously, I was in Bethesda, so I assumed CrossFit Bethesda would be the correct location but there was nothing on their website (other than the Wodify schedule) that says anything about CrossFit Bethesda. Everything at the location says CrossFit Bethesda, and nothing about Tough Temple. So I wasn't 100% sure that I was in the correct place. I showed up about 15 minutes before the class to sign the waiver and pay the drop-in fee. I waited near the door, and usually a coach notices that I look new and lost and will come introduce themselves. That didn't really happen. I was able to catch the eye of Katie, (who was fabulous) coaching a class, but she was busy. She let me know that someone would be right over to help me out. When no one came over to greet me, 5 minutes later, she stepped away from her class to help me. I paid the drop-in fee which ended up being $25, instead of $20 (the most expensive drop-in fee I've ever paid) and she said the class had already started warming up in the back. Since they were running the classes simultaneously, I didn't even realize that now I was late. I ran to the back and the coach told me to grab a PVC pipe and jump in. That was the only thing he said to me in the entire hour. He didn't even ask my name, where I was from, or say goodbye. I'm assuming this was the person that was supposed to help me log into Wodify. Thank goodness for Katie or I wouldn't have known what to do. I probably would have just turned around and went back to the hotel gym to work out. The location was a little small, but they use their space incredibly efficiently. They have a ton of equipment and it is easy to find what you need. The day I was there, they had a great workout programmed with a heavy snatch complex and 21 minute EMOM. Overall, it was an ok experience and now that I understand their process, it would probably be better the second time around. read more

I too have experienced something similar to the first posting. However, the biggest issue I had was arrogance of the staff. Calling one person a "pussy" for not coming when apparently the guy had injured himself while working out (not at crossfit). I also find their "auto-renewal" a slimy trick used by organizations who don't believe in their product and need to trick people into signing back up. I moved from Bethesda and when my membership ran out, I called, and was told via email that they would terminate my membership but they would not refund the month they charged me even though I contacted them immediately upon being charged and I obviously could not participate considering I don't live in the state any longer. From what I have heard, the Silver Spring location is much better run. read more

I happened to be in town for work recently and had the opportunity to join Bethesda Crossfit for a couple of workouts (I have been doing crossfit in Denver for over a year). Each crossfit location around the country has its own vibe and I was very pleased with this gym. What is somewhat unique here, they focus on a dedicated skill, than the WOD (workout of the day) and then leave some time/show you some mobility exercises. I worked out with two trainers - Judd and Allison. Judd is a great trainer, but be forewarned, he will push you and make you work. He has an incredibly strong grasp of the complex movements required for this type of workout. He will NOT put up with whining ;)! Allison, was also awesome. Super nice, but she will make you work as well. Great motivator! My only reservation about this box (gym) is that it doesn't have any simple way to get fresh air onto the floor. They do have showers and cubby's for your gear. If you live in the area and want to stop the BS workouts you're doing and get into the best shape of your life - get over to Crossfit Bethesda! read more

I love Crossfit. I attend the early morning class with Marcus who is a great asset to the Crossfit Staff. The classes are not big: anywhere from 5-10 people a class and the workouts will always test your strength. I have been going there for a year &1/2 and I can absolutely tell the difference. One thing I really like is the times available. There are many times to choose from throughout the day and at no point am I rushing to work or from work to get to the location. A little pricy for the gym but if you think about how much a personal trainer is per session you will understand. I think it's worth every penny! read more

I joined the Bethesda Crossfit location in February 2013. My goal was to work out for 6 months to get in shape for my wedding. I didn't plan on staying there after the wedding because of the higher price associated with Crossfit. Well it's been 2 months since my wedding, and I just don't see myself quitting here. It's positively impacted my life so much that I don't know what I was doing for so many years before this. The coaches are amazing here. Everyone is fun and friendly, but they really just want you to succeed, which is awesome. They also really focus on doing things the right way so that you don't get hurt. The programming is so varied and diverse. Every day is something different, so you don't get stuck in the same routine over and over again. Finally, the people are all great. I have made so many good friends. I look forward to coming into class after a long day of work and getting a tough workout in with some good people. I highly recommend Crossfit Bethesda to everyone. It's a lot of fun and will make a difference in your health. I just wish I would have found this years ago! read more

I just spent a week in Bethesda visiting my sister and attended three classes at Bethesda Crossfit. What a great experience! The Box was stocked with all the expected equipment. I worked with 3 different coaches (Ahmed, Tyler and Katie). Each has their own style and all three were knowledgeable and made the class super challenging & fun. I met a bunch of local members which made being away from my home Box even better. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in the area. read more

I felt very safe going to CFB during COVID, as they had many safety percautions in place. The programming and coaches are great! I felt like I improved greatly during the time I was there. I love this place. Easily my all-time favorite place to workout. Can't beat the exceptional staff whom are extremely knowledgeable and super friendly. Not to mention they are excellent motivators, which is a super-plus. I have been going here for about 6 months and the results are exceptional. The abs are here and I've gotten down to a 7% body fat. I was at 20% almost a year ago. This is a "boot camp-style" workout program, IMO: I like the idea of the camaraderie that they said they tried to establish among their class membership - I spoke to a few people there in a class after it ended, they seemed pleasant and very willing to chat, and I feel that group encouragement really does help motivate. They stressed that their workouts were customizable and adjustable so that everyone could see progress and just perform the same workouts with less weight or less resistance, as appropriate, etc. Then things went wrong, at least for me - they showed me their pricing and contract information. Basically it is like this - for one visit per week / 4 monthly, there is an initiation-type fee of around $100, then around $100 per month and a minimum four (4) month commitment. For two visits weekly / 8 monthly, there is an initiation fee around $125 or so and then around $125 monthly (I may be low balling it a bit) and an eight (8) - month commitment. The other commitment terms are even longer with correspondingly higher initiation fees and monthly charges. All commitments are by written contract. They do contain at least some of the standard "escape clauses" (like moving more than 25 miles away from any club) but to my knowledge these are not applicable if you feel that the workout regimen is not for you after all once you begin and any variance requires their agreement. I felt I would need to come two times per week at a minimum to improve (most gyms have said you need a minimum of three times per week to improve) but the workout is quite strenuous and eight months is a long time to commit to a defined "bootcamp-style", IMO, workout regimen. Also when you work it out, $125 x 8 months is $1,000.00 + $125 initiation committed to in writing, and as I mentioned I may be low-balling the cost a bit. CrossFit has at least one trainer, and perhaps as many as three, for supervising each group class. In short, though CrossFit it is not cheap when you work it out, what you sign up for seems to be quite different from a health club, but also does not seem provide the same flexibility to you to change your routine if you want or need to. I still wanted to try it, but when I expressed hesitation, not over the monthly fee, but over the eight month commitment, and a hope I could come twice a week for four months instead, the immediate response from (who I was told was) the owner was "ain't gonna happen." What I took to be an offhand final dismissal of my concern with no room for negotiation took me aback, and I did not know what to say from that point forward. Frankly, I was a bit put-off. They said they were a "boutique" club (they call you if you miss your class), and that if I joined for the once per week/four times per month and decided I wanted to switch to the eight-month plan for the next seven months that would be all right with them. The written contracts, however, do not say that and it would be dependent on their good will towards you at the time you might want to do this. The trainer whom I dealt with, and who guided me through the "basic workout" was pleasant and seemed to know his stuff very well, but had no authority to deviate from their "pricing structure." To me, that phrase made it sound as if it was written in stone, and that appears to be accurate from my experience. It struck me as odd that the flexibility they talked about in the workouts and the friendly camaraderie they try to foster was not in evidence when it came to the business end of the deal, even as a "first timer" wishing to give it a try. Perhaps I was naïve to expect that. Also, when these terms expire they told me you must agree again to re-up to a new term (e.g., another four or eight months written commitment according to the terms above or those in effect at the time) though without paying the initiation fee again. It's too bad, really - I was looking forward to it for over a month when they planned to open a new place near where I live. I was disappointed by the experience, which prevented me from even trying the "experience" of joining the program at all. They informed me that each CrossFit is independently owned and operated; so these comments are only applicable to the Bethesda, MD CrossFit (and possibly the Rockville, MD CrossFit under the same ownership, however I am uncertain on that point) and I assume not to any other CrossFit operation. This is the "basic workout" that I completed (with frequent rest toward the end - I found it exhausting): 500 yards rowing in under two minutes (I was 2:08); then immediately on to 40 Squats touching a low medicine ball on the floor each time; then immediately on to 30 Situps; then immediately on to 20 Pushups; then immediately on to 10 Pullups (for me, assisted). I have waited for several days after the experience before writing this and have tried to be very fair and accurate. Please feel free to ask me any questions. I hope this is helpful. read more

Three of us dropped in for the 730am class. Yav was very friendly and welcoming and coached a great class. The box was set up efficiently and was a great space. WOD was a 24 minute EMOM that definitely helped to combat all of the carbs I ate afterward. Definitely would drop in here again if I'm ever in the area. read more

Called the location over a week ago and talked to Chris Woods for a few minutes. He told me how to go about starting crossfit and explained that I would need to schedule an evaluation first. I gave him my email so that we could arrange a meeting time. He emailed me right away and I replied a few hours later with my availability over the next few days, but never received a response afterward. Perhaps they were busy. I called Chris on the phone number from his first and only email and was not able to get a hold of him. He did not call back. I'm not sure if they're trying to screen only the very desperate who will call/email relentlessly in order to join crossfit. Perhaps they're just really busy, but this experience sent the message to me that I would not be valued as a customer. read more

So, I'm a massage therapist. I see my share of clients, and not everyone likes my style of massage. One of my clients first told me about Crossfit about a year ago. He was originally doing P90X and it was wrecking him physically. His brother then came back home from the Marines, and introduced him to Crossfit. By 3 months, he was in amazing shape. I became very interested. About 5 months ago, I started my own business and found out there was a Crossfit gym in Bethesda. I went in thinking I was just going to grab some information on the gym for my clients. I ended up running into the manager and talking to him for a bit. He convinced me to just try it out first, so I could fully describe the workout to my clients. I went in a couple of days later and was hooked. I've been in sports my whole life, and this workout, worked me out!!!! This gym may not be for everyone. If your lazy, a complainer, or think you can get in shape in one month..........look somewhere else. This is a real workout. I'm a super competitive person, so I try to push myself. The entire time I was doing the workout, someone was helping me keep good body mechanics and everyone was cheering me on. Wow, you don't get that at Bally's. Yes, it was hard. Yes, I hurt like heck the next day. Yes, I'm getting results. Pain just means you're not dead yet. I couldn't raise my hands over my head the next day, but I couldn't wait to go back. Then I find out that they also have one-on-one training sessions where they can modify the workout to get specific results. Woo-who!!!!! I'm in heaven. Spending a little extra money to take care of the only body we get seems a given. I for one, have found the best place for MY investment. I hope you find yours. read more

I've been going to Crossfit Bethesda (and occassionally Crossfit Extreme Fitness) for almost a year. I'm sorry that people have had some less than desirable experiences, but I don't feel that's part of the norm for this place. I started out going once a week and loved the challenge of the workouts. I loved it so much that I now I can't get enough of it. But it's not just the workouts (I've only done the same workout twice in almost a year) that keep me coming back, it's also the staff and the sense of community that make this gym experience completely different for me. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable and they have worked with me on everything from nutrition to injuries to motivation. And the members cheer each other on and support each other. I've paid a lot of money for gym memberships before that I never used, but I truly feel that this place is a different breed of gym. read more

CFB is an amazing gym and community. Without exception, the coaches are approachable, knowledgeable and encouraging. The programming is awesome--most WODs have a focused strength workout followed by a metcon, interspersed with some days of pure cardio or longer metcons. The communication from the gym is fantastic with frequent newsletters and blog posts with topics ranging from the monthly program, updates about the gym, nutrition/strength pointers, etc. The members are also a great group with a wide range of ability which fosters a comfortable environment for athletes of all levels and experience. The physical space is also well maintained with more than enough equipment. Classes are run throughout the day with tons of options for most work schedules. I've been coming here for close to two years (more diligently over the past 18 months after falling off the wagon a bit...:) and have enjoyed every minute of my time here and love the results! I'm moving out of town--cancelling my CFB membership will be one of the hardest parts about leaving the DMV. Thanks for everything Katie, Chris, Yav and Diana! read more

How can I describe my experience...It is the BEST hard workout I have ever had. I started with the 6 week all women challenge. I experience pain in places and muscles I never knew. But Katie, Chris and the other trainers were patient, tolerable while being tough. I initially did the challenge to look great for my 50th birthday. The negative reviews (although few) are from people who don't understand this gym by comparison to other gyms, Crossfit or otherwise. And I'm shocked that others have had a bad experience, since the recommendation by Crossfit HQ is 3 on 1 off, which means its pointless to get into the gym only 2 days a week. I consider those to be uneducated biases based on individual experiences, far from the general populations norm. All of this was explained up front, they're very transparent and honest about how they want to work FOR you, not against you! Now, with that being said, here's my review: Crossfit Rockville & Bethesda was the first Crossfit experience I ever had. This particular gym excels at working with ALL levels of fitness. I had no idea how out of shape I was at the time. They changed my perception of physical fitness and pushed me mentally, which in turn changed my entire outlook on my nutrition and mode of living up until then. One of the best trainers in the entire Crossfit Community only brings in top notch coaches, who can bring a specialty or 2 to the training table which is near impossible to match. The one thing I liked most about my 5x/week workouts over the 3 years or so I was a member was that after each class, I left learning something new that made the same movement easier for me later on in subsequent workouts. That specific key indicator kept me hooked and wanting to learn more and more every time I stepped in the gym, it motivated me when I didn't want to be motivated. I ended up losing 30-40 pounds, gained leg strength and put up numbers I never thought I was capable of in this lifetime. It gave me a foundation to build on with my fitness. The only reason I switched gyms was because I moved out of state, otherwise I'd still be a regular here. HIGHLY recommended, great facility, coaches, excellent equipment, and the programming is consistent with the 10 principles of physical fitness. The trainers pushed me and instilled a belief in me that ANYTHING was possible when I put my mind to it, and that was AMAZING to me. The challenges the gym puts together are always competitive and fun, and create a team environment. Weight loss, 100 burpee challenge, they always keep it creative and above all, FUN for those of ANY fitness level. I've been going to CF Bethesda for 2 years now and always enjoy my experience. Even as a personal trainer who has the knowledge to train myself-- I still choose to workout with CF Bethesda because of the great coaches... They are always upbeat and positive and great at motivating me to work my hardest. Side Note: As someone who is just about 7 months pregnant this is the only place I feel comfortable working out because the community/coaches are supportive of my continued fitness. Rather than getting judgmental looks from people I get encouragement.. and the coaches are always willing to modify any exercise/WODs for my particular needs. read more

The workouts accomplish what I need them to do. The pounds are coming off. Safety is a big focus among the coaches, especially Kate...which is also great. I haven't experienced the 'amazing' Crossfit community experience that I hear so much about...pretty much everyone comes, works out and leaves. That's more about the area the gym is in rather than the gym. I'm hitting my goals so that's all I'm interested in really. So good place to get a killer workout. read more

Hi, I just started with Crossfit 2 weeks ago. At first, I was completely nervous and intimidated, because the workouts looked intense and most people in the classes look fit. I'm so glad I signed up. I feel that within two weeks, I can already start to see a difference in my body and my strength. I really like the trainers and the other students who are in the class. CrossFit Bethesda does it right! 1. COACHES: The Coaching exceeds expectations. They are extremely knowledgeable about all body mechanics and ensure all participants follow safe practices. They are caring, encouraging and understanding. They are positive and helpful and find all the little ways to make you work faster and harder. They keep you coming back for more, for sure. 2. FACILITY: CrossFit Bethesda is the cleanest CrossFit I've ever seen. The floor is cleaned daily, weights are neatly stacked and equipment is orderly. There is enough equipment for everyone to work at their ideal weight and large enough floor space to not feel cramped. 3. COMMUNITY: CrossFit Bethesda has the most welcoming community. On my first day everyone introduced themselves and the Coach made sure I was comfortable. Even at that early morning hour people were very welcoming & cheery. 4. PRICING: CrossFit is known to be more expensive than a 'gym', but it's not a gym. Every CrossFit class has a maximum limit of participants which allows the Coach to provide one-on-one instruction. If you take the rice of a gym membership & include a personal training session every time you go to the gym, you would pay more than you would at a CrossFit...but one difference, CrossFit Coaches offer much-much more than 'personal training'. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for! CrossFit Bethesda is my 3rd CrossFit gym (I just moved from CA). As far as CrossFit is concerned, they do it right. I highly recommend CrossFit Bethesda for all of your athletic needs. I guarantee they will make you faster, stronger and healthier! read more

I was scared beyond belief to try crossfit. I used to run by Tough Temple Crossfit a couple times a week when they were on Rugby Ave and looked longingly at all the bad ass people inside doing olympic lifts and working out everything under the sun. Then I just thought, well...minus well challenge myself right? Life is too short. I envisioned a bunch of really strong people ready to mock me. Instead I found a really great community of really welcoming friendly people. The coaches are really supportive and will make sure you perform every workout safely. I really enjoy Yavor's morning classes and Seth's weekend classes. Foundations is a very helpful introduction to crossfit. Neil and Andrew taught me some great techniques in foundations and the introduction gave me confidence. 6 months later, I can now do rope climbs, toes to bar, double unders, partial hand stand push ups, kipping pull ups, strict pull ups with no band...things that I never imagined I could do in my lifetime. As of January 2017, Tough Temple Crossfit in Bethesda has since merged with Crossfit Bethesda. But I still really enjoy the new space and all the workouts. Although I am still learning everyday...my fitness has improved overall and I have become a more well rounded athlete. read more
