I wish I had read these reviews (and not just the pre-COVID fanfare) before attempting to have a meal at Cheyenne Crossing. I was so excited based on everything I'd read, but we walked in with our masks on and got nothing but glares. Instead of greeting us, the rude "hostess" snapped, "We DON'T social distance here, and we AREN'T taking to-go orders." This was in late September, so clearly the owner's talks with the staff (per his replies to earlier comments) have not gone a long way toward improving the customer service. Maybe they're very friendly to those *not* wearing masks - not sure. Now I'm seeing that the COVID numbers in South Dakota are off the charts. No wonder. I'm very glad that we walked out and went to Latchstring instead. read more

Cheyenne Crossing was the highlight of my trip to SD. With cute Bigfoot hats and excellent gemstone collectibles, local honey and postcards, plus a fantastic restaurant. We had the Indian tacos and the pie. Our server, Wendy, was one of the nicest people I met on this trip. We chatted a lot about the business, the food, and the area. When I get my mind on eating something specific, it's hard for me to let it go. A local told me about the Indian tacos here, stating they are "the best ever". So of course i had to eat it (and to figure out what it was). When we went, the small hut that says "Indian tacos" was closed and so I thought I was out of luck. Actually, you can order it at the cafe too which has a solid breakfast menu. I didn't realize this until the next day though (when I called to ask about it and confirm they were available), so I drove back to try it before heading out. It's pretty good! I've never had Indian tacos before so I can't compare them to others. It reminded me of a more delicious version of a Mexican pizza than what I think of as tacos. Fry bread is pretty light not oily, a nice chew to it. The toppings are pretty delicious, with ingredients that would go on a 7 layer dip. Taken all together it was a filling meal and I'm glad I tried it. If you're in the area, this place is worth stopping at for a meal. Locals and tourists alike eat here. People are super friendly. Fill up and buy some Oprah approved caramels they sell in the store, then head out to the spearfish canyon. read more

We used Cheyenne Crossing for our catering for an anniversary dinner. We had a small party and it was hard to find a caterer that would help us. Cheyenne Crossing was recommended by another caterer in the area. There was a little mix up on the scheduling however the food and the owner made up for the mistake. Dave was very apologetic and the food was delicious and more than enough for our group. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone that needs catering for a large group. We had the beef and mushrooms(with all the side dishes) and I forgot the name of the salad but the salad was extraordinary. We had breakfast as well and everyone in our group left full and happy. The service was great and again the food was very tasty! The atmosphere is very relaxed and welcoming. The little gift shop is very nice as well. thank you Dave. Made a trip up to Spearfish today but timed it for a lunch stop at Cheyenne Crossing's Stage Stop Cafe. It's one of our favorite places to eat here in the Hills. Wife went for the Bison melt which is one of her lunch favorites and I tried the pulled pork sandwich. This was a melt in your mouth pulled pork sandwich and one of the best I've ever had. And it's a huge sandwich. Both came with fries and a pickle. Dessert for the misses was strawberry rhubarb with ice cream. She loved it. Looked homemade. I am looking for a good coconut cream pie here in the Hills and tried theirs. Nothing to write home about. I'll keep looking. I think this one was a thawed out whipped version with imitation coconut flavoring. Regardless we will be back soon and I'll try the apple pie the next time. This is a great place to stop and shop or browse through the gift shop or their general store. Check out the tee shirts and garments as well. I get all my bear tee shirts from there and look forward every year to see if they have any new ones. read more

Ok, so here I am with the unpopular view of a popular place. On June 21st, which happens to be my birthday, myself and a group of 7 others went to eat for lunch. I had bragged it up to them as a good place to eat. We walked inside and said we had a party of 8. The waitress let out a huge sigh and seemed completely annoyed. This was around 1:00 so it was not at the busiest time. Besides that, she did not ask if we could sit at two different tables which we would have been fine with. Due to her obvious annoyance I decided to sit in the "pavilion" and told her such. She seemed totally relieved. When we sat in the pavilion there was later inside the little snack shack outside who looked out at us and said "oh $#!t". I am sure she didn't realize it but my friend saw her. We waited for a while to be handed a very condensed version of the menu that was inside. We waited for drinks and were told a few times they would get to us as soon as they could. Overall I felt my food was good. I had the Indian Taco. The rest of my party seemed to like theirs as well. It is because of the food we give this rating. I have always liked this place in the past I just don't understand why it is so hard to serve a group of 8 people after the lunch crowd. This is THE place to go in Western South Dakota for "Indian tacos." As a bonus, it happens to be situated in the beautiful Spearfish Canyon, which is a must-see drive with mild hiking to waterfalls options. The Indian tacos - which are essentially traditional Americanized taco fixings (seasoned ground beef, salsa, sour cream, beans, olives, cheese) on top of a giant hunk of chewy, delicious fry bread. Indian tacos are fairly common in South Dakota and other parts of the west, but the ones at Cheyenne Crossing rate as the best I've had, for the quality of the ingredients and overall tastiness. Plus they come in two sizes, which are basically big and bigger, so it's a good deal. There is also a version of strawberry shortcake served on fry bread here too, if you haven't clogged your arteries too badly with the taco to begin with. The waitresses are friendly and call you "hon", and they offer tastings of uh, South Dakota wine, most of which is fruit-based and overly sweet. The rhubarb wine was interesting, at least though, and it's a unique experience, particularly for those of us from California wine country! I liked the wines better at Cheyenne Crossing than at the fancy and touristy "Prairie Berry" winery outside Hill City, and the prices were cheaper, too. There's also a store here, mostly country kitsch and crafts-type stuff, but it's slightly classier than more unique than your general South Dakota gift shop. They also have some camping supplies, which is handy. read more

These people are rude and not accommodating!! During this time of COVID 19 a person would like to believe that any business that you decide to spend your money at would have your well being as a top priority. We were a party of four adults with two of us at risk. All we wanted was for them to serve as on the patio (which is something they state they do) and the person at the door said we will not do that. So we suggested that we just take it to go and she said we don't do to go orders. We gave her a few more ideas and she just would not move off her superior attitude the rude demeanor she continued to portray! I might be able to understand some of her frustrations with us if they were busy but they were not. To end this post I would like to say that there food may be good (we did not get the opportunity to find out) but if the people are rude it doesn't matter how good the food is the air in the restaurant will not let you enjoy what you are eating!! read more

While staying at Wickiup for a wedding, I dined at your establishment a total of 5 times in three days. Meal 1-- light dinner, and good beer served in a frosted mug. Meal 2--lucky charms, and damn good coffee. so good, i drank it black. (bathroom break) Meal 3--Pulled pork, extra pickle and side of chili. Heather was awesome. Thanks for the extra pickle!! Meal 4--you guys catered the wedding. roast beef, mashed potatoes, chicken. So good i bypassed dessert and ate more tates. Meal 5--one egg, bacon, english muffin and coffee. We went to eat here based on yelp reviews. The food was excellent, the service was great, and the dessert was stupendous. We had mac and cheese and fries from the kids menu, fish and chips and chicken strips. All of us loved the food. My wife said it was the best food she has had in the black hills. for dessert we split the fruit medley pie and it was amazing. Also they have an amazing selection of beer (at least 30 to choose from). Plus it sits right at the entrance to spearfish canyon. Wow what a combination! One note: You can dine inside or outside. We will go out of our way just to eat there. Usually we are there for breakfast but we have eaten at lunchtime too. The food is excellent. The service is great. Prices are very reasonable. We have eaten here more than a dozen times through the years and have never been anything but happy with the experience. To the owners: don't change a thing! We love this place! read more

I hate to give this place three stars but alas, I have to. This was just not a great experience today. I have loved it for years and this is why I am not rating it lower (Indian tacos FTW) but it seems to this born-and-raised Deadwoodite that breakfast has really gone downhill. We waited approximately 40 minutes for our breakfast to arrive, after a 10 minute wait sitting at the table to make an order. Eggs were overcooked, gravy and pancakes not hot, and they were out of one dish we had wanted without mentioning it when we sat down. It took forever to get coffee and water refills and overall it was a real bust. I'm giving it three stars to merit its years of good food and service and I'm hoping I just went on a real craptacular day. I'm wondering if they are in a pre-Rally slump or what. The location is stunning and worth the trip just for that and its folksy store, but breakfast and service was really lacking. Kathi got the herb chicken sandwich minus the bun with fries. She says it  was the best she has had, and I can tell you the fries are fresh, perfectly cooked and very very good. Today I had the eggs, hash browns and sausage patty with a Sourdough pancake. The pancake became a new favorite, so long buttermilk. The sausage was the best I have ever had. Eggs done to perfection and good hash browns.  Kat had the scrambled eggs with homemade salsa and ham with tomato slices. Best ham I have had, an inch thick with the best flavor. Kathi loved it all, said the eggs were almost as good as mine.....    Staff is friendly, and the coffee's good and flows like a river.Owner stopped by to say hi, a good guy.   If your in the area and you don't stop by your missing out on a great treat!! read more

Two groups came in after us and both received their food before the two of us. The table behind us ordered the tacos, too. I never thought that I'd give 5 stars to any place where I had to wait over an hour for a table, and then wait almost another hour for food....but...here I am, giving Cheyenne Crossing a 5 star review! My husband and in-laws all ordered the famous Indian Tacos, and they were so crazy delicious!! The dough was cooked perfectly, and unlike other fry bread I've had in the past, this was not greasy at all. Very good food, excellent location. We stayed at Wickiup up cabins and could walk across the bridge to eat. We were there for the 75th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and they were bombarded with huge numbers of people and were still able to put out good food at a good price. Breakfast is very good but you better get there at 7:30 am when they open or you will be waiting and may not get in. Free music during the rally, some vendors, staff was very pleasant even under pressure. Would for sure recommend and go back again. read more

We just got back from traveling through the Black Hills and the Badlands of South Dakota. It was a beautiful trip, a must see for anyone. We happened to come by the Cheyeene Crossing Store on our way through Spearfish Canyon, another must see. It was Mother's Day and the place was packed. We decided to try it the day after for breakfast. We luckily were the only people in there when we got there. So, the service was excellent, the food supberb!! I am a big stickler on all of these. Have been a regular patron of this little spot for many years when touring the Black Hills and am never disappointed. It can be crowded at times so plan accordingly... this is not institutional or fast food service. Most recent visit was 4/17/2011 with a buddy for a beer while the wife fed the slots in Deadwood. Being one who goes for Fish and Chips most everywhere in the country, I couldn't resist the temptation at the CCS... expecting typical basket presentation we were amazed that it was an actual dinner with a light salad and steamed veggies... it was quite impressive and very tasty. Generous beer menu and great setting at the head of Spearfish Canyon. No trip to the Hills is complete without a stop at Cheyenne Crossing. On a group motorcycle ride we stopped by here for breakfast. The food was good but not outstanding as some would say on their reviews in my opinion as I believe breakfast should be the cheapest meal of ur day and this place is over priced! $2.50 for a cup of coffee!!!! Really! No!! While it does have a special aire and uniqueness about it that doesn't justify the price u may disagree. Considering I paid $5 in Deadwood for the same basic breakfast just as good w the toast being sourdough rather than white or wheat bread it's not worth $15 over $5!!! I asked for extra crispy on my hash browns and they couldn't even get that right for the extra $$$! One of us had their supposedly awesome sourdough pancake which was also not so awesome as some describe as per his opinion! Perhaps it's just personal taste on that one. But still overpriced for breakfast and still $2.50 for a cup of coffee!!!! Really! I'd pass in the future myself. Eat breakfast at The Golden Inn motel restaurant for $5-$7 instead in Deadwood on the Main Street south end. read more

Cheyenne Crossing is by far the BEST restaurant in the area. The food is consistently excellent, and the service has always been pleasant for me. In many ways, Cheyenne Crossing is like a locally-owned Cracker Barrel. It has a nice gift shop and home-cooked meals. My favorites are the Indian Tacos and the burgers with hand-cut fries. The fry bread dessert is worth keeping room for. Overall, Cheyenne Crossing is excellent and worth the drive. It's a great stop on your way through Spearfish Canyon. read more

We were bummer that there beautiful outside seating area was closed for some reason at lunch on a Tuesday? We had to sit inside where we were bombarded with song after song of Kenny G while we waited for our tacos (barf). Once our food showed up we scarfed it down so we could get outside again in the fresh air (was super stuffy inside) and be done with the looped Kenny G music. Food is great. Service is a bit slow. If you're in a rush you may want to make another choice. If you have the time however this is a fantastic place to eat. Not only is the place quite charming but the food is very good. I had the Indian taco and can highly recommend it. I was there for lunch on the Sunday over Memorial Day weekend. The best food in South Dakota! If you are anywhere near the black hills you must stop in for a meal. Breakfast is amazing, the sourdough pancakes and cinnamon rolls are delicious. Indian tacos are amazing, I hope to one day conquer a whole one, but the half is more than filling. The croutons are a must try as well, they are the best croutons I've ever had and wish I could order them online! If you love the Indian tacos, and I don't know how you couldn't...
