Delicious poolish bread and apple chausson! Great place for a coffee and pâtisserie. You can sit or take out.

I bought a Kouignette Erable because I'm crazy about anything with real maple. It was SO decadent. The Calabrese sandwich was a tasty combination of textures and flavours. The roll had a satisfying crunch to it. I haven't tried the croissants I bought but, needless to say, I think they will pass muster. The only negative I noted was the regimented space in front of the counter. In fact you would be hard-pressed to see the baked goods in the cases if there were more than 2 people in the shop. read more

We got the almond croissant ($2.75) and it was delicious! The almond paste was perfectly flavoured and was just sweet enough to allow the almond paste to shine through. The top was very crispy and the layers in the croissant was super thin and buttery. However, one thing I noticed was that the bottom of the croissant was a little soggy. We got the croissant around 2:30PM (they open at 7AM) and we think that its because it's been sitting around for a little bit which caused the bottom to be soggy. We have plans to come earlier another day to test if the soggy-ness is due time (the croissant sitting around all morning), or if it is just the way they make it. But one thing for sure is to make sure to come early because they can run out very fast! We visited again this morning around 9:30AM and they unfortunately had run out of the almond croissants already!!! I guess we got super lucky the first time to have been able to get our hands on an almond croissant at 2PM. So this time around we just decided to try the Raisin Brioche ($3.00). This was pretty enjoyable as well, but probably not something I would buy again. The Raisin Brioche had custard and raisins rolled into it. They were very generous with their fillings and had evenly distributed the custard and the raisins, which made every bite very enjoyable. Overall, great bakery, and we are still on the hunt to get our hands on a fresh almond croissant! Also, pro tip: watch your step as you enter through the second set of doors as there is a step - I tripped twice because I just kept forgetting to watch where I was going (or maybe I'm too eager staring at the pastries to watch my step, whoops!) read more

What's happened to Chez Fred?!? Fred? Are you still there? I'd go to Chez Fred regularly when they had their location in Saint Henri and have stopped at the Sherbrooke Street location from time to time. I'd always loved this place and enjoyed there croissants and pastries. I hadn't been there in a while so I was really excited when we were in the area and decided to stop in and grab a few croissants and an abricotine. I don't know what happened, but everything tasted like something you'd buy at a grocery store in America. In the end I could only have a bite or two and everything went into the compost. Not worth the calories. I'm giving Chez Fred 2 stars, instead of one, on the strength of their past which I hope they can get back to soon. read more

Best croissants ever. I'm dangerously addicted to their butter croissants. Goddamn there must be a stick of butter in each one! It makes every other place that serves croissants taste like cardboard. They also have good coffee and different types of pastries other than croissants. My faves there is the butter croissant and the amandine. You just gotta try it to know how good it is. Their service is a little lacklustre and God forbid you should ask one of them what's in a sandwich lol they look so lost... but overall, very tasty! read more

A friend of mine spoke very fondly of Chez Fred, so I decided to stop by the bakery while I was in the area a couple of days ago. The first thing I noticed when I landed at Chez Fred was the size of the breads; they were so tiny compared to what I'm used to that I found myself looking around for bigger ones for an instant, realizing quickly enough that this was all they offered. I decided I'd go ahead and order their biggest, Le Bûcheron, and give it a try. Taste-wise, the sourdough bread is better than most commercial breads, yet it did not sweep me off my feet. Its hard crust only became harder as the hours passed, so much so that 48 hours after purchasing the bread, it had become difficult to chew and I had to resign myself to dipping it in soup in order to finish it before it reached its final form: A fossil! I also suspect that by the time the bread would have reached the third day, I might have been able to recycle it into a soccer ball. In all seriousness, I find it difficult to justify buying again a bread which I must devour completely within 48 hours or less; for a family of 4 or 5 it makes total sense, however for a couple or a person living alone it is less sensible. And while purchasing a smaller bread might solve part of the issue, its quicker consumption resulting in the avoidance of its fast hardening process, it would leave me bread-less after a couple of days only, and therefor obliged to seek new bread several times weekly. Chez Fred's bread tastes fine, but it comes with an issue which for me is unsustainable; so I will continue buying my bread at Première Moisson! read more

came here Sunday morning during COVID for take out, pretty cute and busy place i really enjoyed the croissant, very buttery; unfortunately i was not there early enough for the almond croissant The apple turnover (Chausson aux Pommes) is my favourite! the shell is amazing, and the apple sauce inside is tasty. got the last kouign amann that day, pretty good! I can't say enough good things about this café and bakery. When you walk in you realize how pretty it is. Lots of space, excellent for getting some work done. The smell of the fresh baked goods drifts to your nose and it is wonderful. Extremely nice young girls making coffee and serving, quiet and peaceful throughout the store. I feel so bad giving such a negative rating so I apologize in advance however the 'grilled cheese' I had here is hands down the worst I've EVER had in my whole life. I came here before a meeting to grab a quick bite a few weeks ago, and (mistakenly) ordered the grilled cheese. I couldn't get over how terrible it was to be honest - the cheese wasn't any of the good stuff and was basically a chunk of processed stuff that literally made me gag with each bite (2 bites to be exact before I had to throw the sandwich out). Amazing breads and pastries! Take them to go or stay to take advantage of their Wifi. Fred is really dedicated to his customers and it shows. There's a little more variety in the breads on the weekend since there is more traffic. They also offer coffees, sandwiches and salads from time to time. It's still reletively new so the menu is always changing. The only bad thing I could say about this place is that I live nearby and it's so tempting to just go in and buy whatever just came out of the oven! read more

Another neighbourhood bakery that I frequent, Chez Fred is a clean establishment with ample seating for couples and the odd group. A good selection of pastries are available, with the usual personal favourites of croissants and chocolatines there. I found their croissants a bit crustier than I personally like but overall they are good and their coffees are nice and my wife loves the Kusmi teas. The ambiance isn't the greatest but it's inviting enough to sit and have a chat or make use of the wifi here. read more

This review is strictly for their croissants, and in a take-out capacity. My MIL picked some up for breakfast and they are amazing. Buttery and rich, flaky and chewy, but with a nice crunch on the outside. Also, huge. Their chocolate croissants are very good as well. Two strips of chocolate are laid down along the length of the croissant and my only minor complaint is that they aren't spread out, so you don't get chocolate in every bite. We also had a raisin brioche thing. Plump raisins that got a little dried out in the baking process to give a bit of chew are a nice addition to the flaky pastry. I feel like the raisins must be soaked in something as they seem to have a more complex flavour than regular raisins. Unsure on cost or service since I wasn't actually there, but based on taste, I would go back for more. read more

I've been walking by this storefront for a few months waiting for it to open, and now it's finally here. I bought a regular croissant and a chocolate croissant (elsewhere called a chocolatine). Both were pretty inexpensive and looked crisp and inviting. Having now had bites of each I'm pronouncing them delicious. The chocolate version had chocolate that had not yet hardened. There isn't a lot, but it seemed to be the perfect amount. I could also taste all the butter in the pastry- bad for my heart I guess, but soooo tasty for me. The regular croissant was also wonderful, not mushy or oily, instead flaky and rich. I'll definitely be going back to try more. Another nice surprise- they seem to offer free wifi. I can't speak to the speed/reliability of the network (only saw the sign, didn't try it out), but I'd like to try this place out as a writing spot. The kitchen is open- I'd also love to see the baker at work. read more

I bought croissants, baguettes, choquettes and different kinds of breads from this French pastry shop and I won't be going anywhere else. EVERYTHING is delicious!! The service is top notch and the owner is a nice man! I was curious about what a choquette was, so I asked him and he said there's no better way to experience a choquette than by trying one at which point he handed my girlfriend and I each one free of charge. I thought that was very classy of him. Of course, after taking one bite out of the choquette I bought a few to bring home. Great pastry shop and amazingly friendly staff and owner! I've been back a few times now. The chocolatines are the best I've tasted (soft, warm, light). I keep trying them elsewhere and haven't come across any I like better. Coffee is good enough. Staff are friendly. Wifi connection is available, but not very reliable. The atmosphere is fairly quiet, with people chatting with friends over coffee or having meetings. There are nice big tables for those working and plugs for laptops. The place is roomy with some nice big windows at the front. The decor is not very trendy, but it's clean and simple. They have a rotation of local artists displayed on their walls. The whole place is wheelchair accessible. read more

Chez Fred is a GEM! Ignore the naysayers like Tarushka. The other side of that story is that Fred generously gave this man food and has now arranged for him to come at closing time to pick up his bread. Fred cares about his customers and it shows in the strict principles he adheres to when buying ingredients for his creations. His flour and butter are both imported and are specifically selected according to their taste and health benefits. His breads about 70% less gluten than the junk we buy in grocery and even in some 'artisinal' shops. THere is no fat used in his breads which are just beyond delicious. Every one of them. The pastries are heavenly and have never once disappointed. Our 3 year old grandson still raves about the vegetable pizza, chocolat chaud and pain au chocolat he devoured a couple of weeks ago. These things are cheap and incredibly delicious, easily my favourite in Montreal. Not just your typical cafe. While there are some pastries, they mainly focus on breads. My friend ordered the chocolate croissant which was flaky, and delicious and I ordered the smoked salmon quiche which I found quite good as well. We both ordered coffee, which was offered in dark or mild roast. The dark roast was delicious and full bodied. They offer an extensive selection of Kusmi teas though some are priced differently than others. Nice to see to see this somewhat desolate area of the West-End starting to attract much needed goods and services previously unavailable. I recall this locale being empty for ages until it was turned into Chez Fred. That being said, I found that so far, their bread can't compare to the other small artisanale or even the 2 large chain artisanale bakeries. Their brioche is simply NOT up to par, not at all buttery, the épeutre is just ok. As for the pastries, I don't know as I've yet to try them; the service is pleasant, prompt and courteous. It's nice to see a small café area should one decide to sit down and relax for a bit with a latté and a sandwich (also not tried) or pastry. All in all , a welcome addition to the West-End, but I'll stick to my other places for my bread and goodies purchases. read more

After closing for 2 months for renovations, I was happy to see that Chez Fred is once again open for business. Unfortunately the new layout of the renovated patisserie is far from welcoming . First of all, you have to go through two doors and two small steps, then you find yourself side by side with the display of croissants, chocolatines and bread. If there is a line up, it is impossible to move around. I also noticed that there is less of a choice in their cake display. By the way while waiting to be served, two customers tripped over the small step , almost going through the glass door. Chez Fred!
