The quality of food is truly so good. Hand rolls are stuffed and each bite of fish is so buttery and fresh. I couldn't really taste the difference between sushi places until coming here and now I can't go back. Chef kama and chef komodo's craftsmanship shows. For kitchen entrees, there hasn't been one thing I've tried that's bad and just a great variety of selection. Food Allergy Alert The futomaki contained shrimp which my son is allergic to. The menu does not list shrimp as an ingredient, and the server insisted there was no shrimp even after we specifically inquired. The ambiance is settling, comfortable and relax, which inspires your appetite. Mr. Kamata is receptive, engaging and attentive, along with his staff. Oh my goodness guyssss!!i didn't get to take a lot of pictures or do the ordering but this place is superbbb!!!! The sashimi were so fresh and sooooo delicious!!!! I don't think I'll ever get sick of sushi or sashimi!!!!! The uni was my FAVORITEEEEEEEE of the night. It was such a beautiful piece!!! Usually people put the broken pieces of uni at the bottom and put a nice and beautiful piece on top for presentation. But Chef Kama did NOT use that gimmick. He presented the sushi with a HUGE beautiful piece of UNI that I'll never forget!!!!!! I would go back just to get a plate filled with Uni sushi ( but I won't do that cause it won't be good for me. But the eel hand roll was JUST as good!! Soooo much eel and flavor was spot on. The nori was still crunchy. The tuna nigiri was so velvety and fresh and delicious!!! You just can't go wrong with the classics. Next time I would bring my family and friends there to eat!!! I was no disappointed at all. Phenomenal staff, awesomely satisfying sushi, low-key vibe, and classy, mature decor. Why hadn't I been to Chez Kama before tonight?! It was empty when I walked in and asked if they were Kosher. They awkwardly replied "no," worried I'd walk right out, but I said, "great!" Took a seat and ordered edamame and a Nikki roll, which has crab, shrimp, spicy tuna, avocado, and cucumber. You can get any of their rolls wrapped with cucumbers instead of rice, which I got. For what it was, the price was so worth it. The edamame was good too - a lot of it and not too salted. My company got two basic spicy tuna and salmon rolls. Tried one of each and liked it! I dug the old-school NYC photo on the wall. Also, our waitress, Catarina (?) was such a sweetheart. I think I have a new friend in her! One bad thing was how freezing it was inside. We were very uncomfortable because of that and should've asked to turn down the AC. Spectacular food and service!! Just ordered take out and the entire process was a breeze. The girl behind the phone was polite, understanding and knowledgeable of their menu. The takeout package was extremely generous as well. Ample amounts of soy sauce, spicy mayo and ginger were included with the sushi without me even asking for it. Wish I could give 0 stars, was served rancid grey tuna. When I raised the issue to the waiter he assured me it was fine and that it was just from a different part of the fish which was why it wasn't the same pink as the tuna someone else on my table received. I had one piece and instantly knew it was spoiled. i again tried raising the issue to the waiter to which I was told I was wrong and that it was fine. This is a rather disappointing review for me to be writing today because I've been to this restaurant a few times in the past and had nothing but positive experiences. The most recent visit however was not so stellar. We arrived on a weekday around 8pm, two people. There were two female servers that looked very busy and didn't bother to greet us, even when making eye contact. We must have stood waiting at least 5 minutes before the asian lady came over and asked how many people. When we finally sat down we didn't get serve water until 10 minutes later after I attempted to flag someone down. I ordered the duck breast and she had the salmon sashimi and some special sushi roll. The food was not terrible but not the best neither. I would have liked the duck meat to be a little warmer. The sashimi was cold you could taste the ice in the fish. Not good for sashimi, it's supposed to be served room temperature. The servers were slow and other diners next to us got their dinner before we did and were seated after us. There were only two servers in a semi busy dining room. The asian lady with glasses who I assume is the owner or manager did not seem to care and had a real attitude problem. Even when I attempted to flag her down she just looked away. You get 2 stars because of my pleasant experiences in the past. Sorry to say I can't see myself coming back here again. read more

I had dinner here with my brother on a Saturday. Our favorite sushi restaurant of Great Neck closed down a few years ago (where Masago is currently located) so we had to find a replacement. I was a bit wary about eating here because I saw so many yelp reviews referencing the lunch special but decided to give it a shot when I read that the sushi chef is Japanese. We walked in a few minutes past 7, and the small Japanese hostess welcomed and seated us immediately. The restaurant itself can seat just about 60 guests comfortably, but I don't think there are any seats by the sushi bar. I noticed many patrons eating the French-y rabbit dish, which I found odd but then realized that my brother and I were the only Asian customers. We ordered the chirashi and a sashimi platter to share. I was a bit thrown off by the presentation of the chirashi b/c I'm used to seeing it served in a bowl but this made it easier to share. My brother pointed out that the sashimi is aged (indicated by the slight mushy texture of the fish), which is a typical practice of Japanese sushi chefs. Both dishes had a hefty portion of sashimi and I was full before finishing my share of the meal. I finished my meal with a green tea ice cream (the only part of the meal that matters to me). It had a milder green tea flavor than others I've had but it was a huge scoop. Don't think it was worth $5 though... Though I had a nice experience at Kama, I don't think I'd return unless I'm in the neighborhood. I live in Douglaston so I'd rather get my sushi platters from Sushi Family in Little Neck (Korean-run but the fish is fresh and they serve FREE ice cream - green tea or red bean flavors - after the meal). If you're in the Great Neck area, this would be a great place to bring a date (spotted a couple having their first date here) or have dinner with friends/family. read more

My family and I have been coming here for over 10 years. We love it!! It's our go-to restaurant for all of our family birthdays or events. Mr. and Mrs. Kama are the best and the staff are always so friendly. As for the food, we wouldn't continue to come here for so many years if it wasn't consistently good. The sushi and sashimi are always fresh and the hot foods are all great. Some of my personal favorites here are the house chopped salad, mushroom medley spring roll, and roasted cod. For sushi rolls, the Kama roll, and nikki roll are good and I have never eaten a better Futomaki roll from any Japanese restaurant than I have at Kama. My family has not been able to go out to eat during cobid bc many of us are high risk and as a result we always get take out by the end of the week bc we re tired of cooking and washing dishes. Chez Kama is THE ONLY place we will trust to get take out from when it comes to raw fish. Not only that, their food, hot and sushi, is the only food that is CONSISTENTLY AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS. I can't emphasize how much care goes into the food and how fresh everything is. Today one of the entrees we ordered was the Cajun tuna steak. We called commenting that were concerned that the fish would be steaming in its own packaging and be overcooked by the time we got home. Well, the chef waited until I arrived to pick up, fired up the tuna on the spot, and brought the bag out to me to limit the amt of time the fish would be sitting. Being Asian, my girlfriend can usually pick out the nationality of the sushi chefs. Most of the well-known Great Neck sushi restaurants have Chinese, Taiwanese, or Korean chefs. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's sort of like going to an Italian restaurant and being served by a French guy. Again, nothing wrong with that, but you just gotta believe that there's something special about someone carrying on the tradition and techniques of his ancestors. In Chez Kama, she immediately noticed Chef Kama behind the sushi bar. He was teaching his younger sushi chefs his techniques in Japanese. Of course we had to order it, and it was excellent. As was the Long Island Duck, which others have talked about already (Having had Peking Duck in Beijing and Long Island Duck in Great Neck, I can now say my life is complete). I've to Kama a few times now and each time I am let down. I try and go in with a positive attitude each time but the service is horrendous every time i go. I went with friends recently and for what should have been an hour dinner... took 2 1/2 hours solely because of the service. While I didn't mind the company of my friends for that time, not only was my friends order wrong after that long wait, but his main course came out after we were done with ours. Also, after he sent it back because it was the wrong order, the food came back cold but he was just to angry to send it back again because it was so late at that point. Not many sushi restaurants around Great Neck. Glad I got to try this place out around my neighborhood. Sushi was very fresh and their thinly cut sashimi was just the way I liked it. They have a beautiful wine/liquor collection and the music was at a perfect volume playing 102.7 radio music. My mother got the Today's Special which was the fried oysters, my brother ordered the beef bento box and I ordered sashimi. The sashimi came with 5 different types of fish, 3 pieces of each. Overall, it was a tad pricey but probably only because it's located in Great Neck. read more

It is difficult to begin writing a review for a restaurant you have been enjoying for so long. Where do you start? With the food? With the ambiance? Why I keep going back? I'm sure of one thing - I feel at home every time I step into this restaurant. I know that great care and attention is paid to every detail of my experience. The restaurant itself is cozy, smaller than your average neighborhood Japanese restaurant, yet nearly twice the size of their original Great Neck space (which was my favorite sushi restaurant at the time and also where I first learned to appreciate the art of sushi and the dedication of a sushi chef). My favorite sushi place in Long Island! I've lived in Long Island for over 20 years and have been a patron of Kama's for at least 10. Kama's food is so fresh and well prepared that I find myself craving it and making the trip out there even though I no longer live in Great Neck. The restaurant is small but impeccable and stylish. Their signature roll is the Kama roll and it is excellent. I have brought many other sushi eaters to Kama's and not one of them has left unsatisfied. At the top of their rave list are freshness and flavor. The menu, in general, offers a good selection of French and Japanese dishes. Aside from the duckling, the grilled tuna is made to perfection. The restaurant is usually very busy and service can be slow at times but it is always courteous. In fact, the overall ambiance is quite homey. read more

I have eaten here several times and have never been disappointed! My boyfriend and his family are regulars and we have been here for many special events. They are more then accommodating when it comes to large parties. Since we are usually there is large groups, we do a lot of family style plates that are good for sharing. Their salads are delicious and all of their ingredients are fresh. I love their sushi as well, and I tend to be picky when it comes to sushi. For entrees I love the duck or bass. Both are home runs. It did help that we pre-ordered, but it didn't feel rushed, plates and bowels were cleared in a timely manner, water/tea was always filled. I've had lunch at this place and each time the dining in experience has been exquisite, waitress patient and willing to explain the specials and the menu and food fresh and tasty. So I got cocky and thought to myself..."Self, you can probably get that same good food and service to go" ... my 'self' was DEAD WRONG. I order the Bento box special to go. When it was ready I paid and just snatched it up, eager to get back to my desk and partake of its bento box goodness. I get in the car and my coworker says 'Man that bag seems really small for a bento box' and you know what she was right. THESE MOFO's gave me 2 count (1, 2!!!!) really small pieces of mackerel and 2 shumai with salad for $10!!! A far cry from the overflowing bento box I saw the other patrons eating in the restaurant. Missing was the rice (who the hell cares if I'm not supposed to be eating it), miso soup and sashmi. AH HELL NAH! I turned that car around and went right back! I get in there and the waiter is arguing with me that I got the bento box, (my face is still stuck in a shocked expression), and his fellow staff are telling me the restaurant doesnt make bento boxes to go (do they not know I will fight for food, I was a hot min away from taking off my earrings and getting ghetto, corporate ettiquette be damned!). So Im like ok what does this mean Im eating my $10 salad adn shumai and shutting it up.. I DONT THINK SO! I think they saw all hell was about to break loose if they didnt come up off the food, so they act like they are doing me a favor for something I paid for and get me the rice and soup and then I had to bitch so more for the sashimi.. WHO IN THE HELL?!!! I mean really! And you know what its the crappiest pieces of sashimi I ever had in my life, I almost choked on the damn thing..no thanks to that. So you know as soon as i finished eating (I was hungry OK, dont look at me like that!) I wrote this nice long review so buyers can beware: If you are going to Kama for lunch DINE IN. We were treated to a waitress who couldn't crack a smile if she tried, and didn't stop by the table a single time after taking our orders. Then we attempted to order dessert. She tells us that we can't have dessert because there is another party waiting. Are you serious? Yes, I am. So we ask for the manager. This was a nightmare: The manager/head chef says, "sorry, but with the financial status we just have to book as many as possible; we're just not going to turn away business." I have friends who absolutely adore this restaurant so periodically I go back to give it another go. Honestly, I just don't get it. I find the sushi bland and the fish nothing exceptional. The last time we went, we ordered grey goose on the rocks. We were served an inferior vodka. As we were sitting right by the bar area we saw the bartender pouring, it was the right bottle but the stuff inside wasn't. When we pointed it out to the waitress, she tasted it and immediately replaced it from another grey goose bottle. I'm totally turned off. The owners do seem very sweet and I'm sure it's hard to run a restaurant on such a high rent street but if they are dishonest in one place I have to suspect dishonesty elsewhere. Bad experience. Came here after reading positive reviews and we're leaving disappointed and literally with a bad taste in our mouth. Ordered fried calamari that was soggy and rubbery. Typical sushi menu with "specialty" rolls that were poorly presented. Sushi should be visually appealing but ours looked like they were just thrown on a plate with an unreasonable amount of scallions and mounds of "crunch" topping scattered all over the plate. Fish didn't seem that fresh and the sushi chef's knife skills were poor. Service was extremely slow. Rolls took over forty minutes after the ordered was placed. The wait staff seemed unattentive and overwhelmed. The only thing that came out promptly was our glass of water. Waiter never asked us if we'd like anything else to drink besides the tap water they served us. I asked for the check as soon as our food came out in fear that it would be another half hour before we were even seen again. Unfortunately this was our first and last trip to Kama. I just don't get what all the hype is about. Go across the street to Mizu for better service and quality. read more
