Koiso truly exceeded all my expectations. I was expecting an overpriced, decent sushi restaurant in the middle of Carle Place, but was blown away by an authentic, Japanese-run local gem. The owners seem to know all of their regulars here, and made time to stop by each table to greet customers. The menu here is fairly extensive with different sushi/sashimi combinations. Great for groups, and for really reasonable prices too. We ordered two mystery boxes ($55? or $50? for the premium, and about $35 for the regular) and two sushi/sashimi omakase dinners. Everything was DELIGHTFUL. I usually find one or two pieces that I'm not the greatest fan of, and that was the case here too with a torched piece (not sure what it was). The other fish was great though - they don't skimp on portions & the rice is well seasoned. The interior of the restaurant is a bit dated, but doesn't take away from the food. I wonder what made them to treat a customer with careless service. I used to love this place as my favorite Japanese restaurant but not anymore. The original owners retired and I was so sad to hear it and feared this place too would become yet another Chinese owned mass produced crap sup par sushi spot... But it has not!!! Owned by another fantastic Japanese couple where the husband used to deliver the best picks of fresh fish and seafood to award winning and Michelin starred restaurants all across NYC. The space was upgraded a bit and thankfully they still retained the chef who handles the back kitchen and still deliciously creates and beautifully plates all their traditional Japanese hot dishes (please bring back the chawanmushi though!). Menu is a bit more scaled down from what it was but still all delicious and price point for it all is perfect. This spot is worthy enough to come to every day or to LIRR in from the city to eat at. Living in Long Island for 30+ years and never knew there was a hidden gem of a Japanese restaurant near the Roosevelt Field shopping Center. Made a reservation for 8pm and were seated immediately upon arrival. Warmly greeted and seated, we ordered 2 of the chef's choice omakase boxes and 2 sushi sashimi combos. All the fish was fresh, flavorful and higher than average quality. We met the owner, Mr. Kay and shared conversation about Japan. The staff was warm and personable. We enjoyed our dinner thoroughly and will be back for the miso black cod and hamachi kama next time. Dinner for 4, no drinks, about $200 all in, more than fair, about 35% less than the same experience in Manhattan. This used to be one of my favorite Japanese restaurants, but this experience was extremely disappointing. We ordered the pork katsu curry with rice along with several other dishes, but the curry was so salty that my husband and I could only take one bite each. We asked for it to be packed to go. The last time we took this dish home, they packed the rice, curry, and pork katsu separately. However, when we opened the container at home that evening, there was no rice, and everything had been carelessly mixed together--as if they had simply scraped the entire plate into the container. I don't know whether this was done because we complained that the food was too salty, but it honestly felt disrespectful and spiteful. I'm both upset and shocked by the way this was handled. Dined in more recently and had a great dining experience. The restaurant isn't the most modern or fanciest but there is a nice charm of a local restaurant feel that I really appreciated. The service was very attentive and friendly. We ordered the sushi and sashimi for two, which was delicious and a nice size and also the rock shrimp which was tasty. On a separate night, we picked up the sushi and sashimi for two and it was the same quality as when we dined in which we were really happy about. It is a hidden gem in Long Island. The owner is Japanese although sushi chef is not. The quality is unbelievable with great value for money. For entrees, we ordered Chirashi $30, Kaisen Don $48 and premium box $50. All raw fish is super fresh. Each entree has good varieties of fish and amazing presentation. I have no complaints. I would warn you that the food comes out very hot, so wait a little before trying to eat things like soup and the curry! Amidst a sea of so-called "Asian Fusion" eateries recently opened in the area, Koiso's authentic Japanese food and ownership really stand out. Family owned for many years with yummy food, homey decor and comfy seating. Today we had lunch at Koiso after a several year hiatus, and found that their service and food are even better than before. The lunch set, a bargain at $19.95, gives diners a choice of four sushi entrees, a small salad with fresh ginger dressing, plus a full size bowl of tanuki udon. The udon was so delicious with its slightly sweet broth, tempura flakes and plump noodles. We both chose the five piece nigiri sushi as entree course, every piece was fresh and tender. We were hungry so ordered a couple of extra appetizers too. Koiso's version of age dashi tofu was among the best I've ever had, lightly fried with a thin coating nestled in a tasty broth and topped with chopped green onions. Excellent shumai dumplings were made with savory shrimp filling encased in delicate dough. For Yelpers who may have had a so so experience at Koiso in the past, please give them another try for improved "omotenashi" service and yummy family style Japanese cuisine. I just had the best sushi of my life! Koiso is the best place ever! It's an older place which matches the decor. It has 4 non-private tatami rooms on one side, and tables with chairs and benches along the other. The sushi bar was in the back. The service was excellent. Everyone was so friendly. The owner even came over and spoke to us for awhile. K, you are the sweetest man. It was so cute when his wife came over to him to tell him it was time to do the dishes. The food was incredible. The fish was so fresh, it literally melted in my mouth. The tuna was a deep red and beautiful. All the cuts of fish, which anywhere else is cut to about 1/8" thick, was cut double that - and it still melted in my mouth. I've always wanted to try uni, and tonight was the night. It was wonderful. At $8 a piece, it was still the best price I've ever seen. Very mild and oyster-like. We were 4 people and we ate well. Prices were reasonable. See specific dishes in pictures. Solid Japanese takeout for this area. It may not be the most authentic, and may not survive in the city, but they're a consistent staple in this part of Long Island. - Nasu (eggplant) appetizer is always very good. This is something I always order here, and they do well with this traditional dish. Oishi! - Omakase dinner is affordable, but the fish variety and quality can vary by day. A few times when we first tried this place, the omakase had a good variety of decent quality items. More recently, I've found the omakase will just contain more regular sushi pieces and often repeat pieces (2 of the same fish). It's definitely better than other random LI sushi restaurants, but isn't on par with options in the city or even other Long Island sushi restaurants that charge a bit more (eg, Dozo Dozo in Woodbury). - Ramen here was fine but nothing special. - The one time we ate here in the restaurant, I had a special omakase bento style jewel box. It was actually quite nicely presented and I enjoyed it. VIBE: We have eaten here once, and while it had a nice cozy family type of vibe, I'd probably just stick to takeout here. This is one of the few truly authentic Japanese restaurants in the area. My family and I have been coming here for years. Sushi is always fresh and presentations are truly pieces of art. We came here last week for dinner. The restaurant was busy. We were seated right way. We decided to try the special tatami seating area. It is hard for most Americans to sit this way and most people have their legs fall asleep. We really enjoyed eating in the traditional way. Our waitress was very attentive and professional. She constantly checked to see how we were doing. We ordered Omakase (9 pieces of sushi chefs daily specia5l selection plus tuna roll), chefs special sushi/ sashimi and pork katsu curry. Everything was delicious and the presentation was wonderful. The owner and his wife are very friendly and have owned this restaurant for over 30 years. We were interested in the Tatami seating and this place had good reviews on the food. There is street parking available but the restaurant has its own parking lot in the rear. They had normal seating and tatami seating. They have an extensive menu with lunch specials. They served hot tea which was great with the cold weather. They also provided miso soup with the meal. We ordered Tuna Tataki as an appetizer and Unagi Don and Omakase sushi dinner (even though it was lunch time) as main dishes. Both were very good. The unagi came with 4 pieces and lots of rice. Normally when I order this at other restaurants, I get half of what they served here for a slightly lesser price. All the seafood was fresh and delicious. The was only one waitress for the entire dinning room. She handled three tables and all the takeout orders. They had a lot of takeout orders. Even though she was busy she still checked on us. I walked into a completely empty restaurant at around 5:45pm on a Friday, asked "do you have a reservation?" no, I reply, do I need one ? lol Soon, a few more tables join me & the room is filled with conversation & some warmth. In the mood for some rolls, I order the combo that offers Miso soup, which is excellent. The rolls, they are ok, good..not too much rice, but I must have missed the memo that rolls are now 6 pieces, since the mid 1980's what had been 8. Also, a Mango Kani Salad, some crunch on top. Very good, a bit too much dressing, but a good portion that leaves me with 1/2 for tomorrow. If you read this & live nearby, do you have a favorite local Japanese spot that makes great sushi & sashimi ? The reviews on Yelp always seem to be loved, with many 4-5 star reviews, but when i search them "most recent first" there is a sudden drop to 1-3 stars with an explanation "new owners, used to be amazing" etc. Pleasant service, tables for 2 very close together, a few tatami tables and 2-3 tables for four to six people. I really wanted to like this place because is so difficult to find good sushi in this area but I would not come back: - Food: we ordered the omakase for 75 usd. The quality of the fish was ok although some of the pieces were not properly cut. The amount of wasabi that the chef decided to put in each sushi piece between fish and rice was insane. Both my husband and eye teared up with some of the pieces (we are used to spicy and wasabi but this was A LOT). Contrary to other spots we have had omakase, all the pieces were served at the same time, with no explantion of what we were eating. Honestly, I have had better in chinese buffets. - Ambiance: it's like eating in your aunt's house. There is a loud tv, table was sticky, one of the tables was watching tv on their phone (outloud), one of the "booths" was filled with toys for who seemed like the server's daughter. The kid was screaming and running and approaching the tables. I guess if you have small kids who also scream and run while you eat sushi this is not a bad spot, otherwise... - Service: definitely the most exasperating part. We only got approached by the server to bring the drinks and the food 45 minutes later (get ready to wait!). We were not offered water, there was not this "visually checking from time to time if somebody needs something", nothing. We asked how many pieces was the omakase...she didn't know. When we finally were to pay my husband brought her the card so we could leave (extra charge for not paying cash btw!) And she still continued to chitchat with the table of women who were overseeing her alleged daughter. We received the card back 15m later. We also found a hair on one of the sushi pieces, they replaced it with no comments but I think is worth notting. read more
