I just had one of the worst experiences I've ever had in Great Neck, and I've lived here since my high school days. Two friends and I went to dinner at Suko Restaurant on Middle Neck Road. When we arrived, I asked if we could sit outside, and the owner had no problem with that. While we were enjoying our meal, one of my friends mentioned that the edamame needed a little more salt. Seeing the owner outside, I politely asked if we could have some salt. To my shock, he suddenly started yelling at me and told me that I was being rude. At first, I thought he was joking, so I responded, "Can you imagine how rude I am to my husband?" His response was completely inappropriate and offensive. He said that if he were my husband, he would slap me on my behind over and over again in a sensual manner and that I would enjoy every moment of it. My friends and I were absolutely stunned. When I asked him to stop and bring us the check, he then said that "you Jews always give me problems." A few minutes later, after I told the waitstaff that I intended to share my experience on GN Mommies, he came over with hot sake to apologize. He even offered to refund our meal, but I declined. I don't want anything from someone who makes hateful remarks about Jews. After living in Great Neck for 40 years, I have never experienced anything like this. As a Jewish resident, I was deeply offended by both the inappropriate sexual comments and the anti-Semitic remark. I will never set foot in this restaurant again. read more

The shrimp shumai which is served hot and topped with shrimp. Nice sweet flavor. Then we had the Kings point roll which is spicy tuna, avocado, spicy mayo and jalapeño. The duck tacos actually used the Indian pancakes as the taco wrapper so unfortunately we had another extremely oily dish. I don't understand why so oily... The chicken teriyaki was basic. 3.5 stars - Been coming to Soku a few years now and each time we stick to the dishes we know and like so usually no complaints. My only critique this visit are two simple things: - the appetizers we ordered were good but the timing was a little too close to our entree arrival. We were about halfway through, then our entrees showed up. So I didn't get to enjoy the apps as I felt rushed to get to my entree. I ordered sushi so that's fine, but my company ordered all hot entrees so I wanted them to eat it straight away. - the grilled squid had a good teriyaki based sauce but the squid was a little firm on the tentacle pieces. The body portion was perfectly tender, just the edge and the tentacles could've used a minute more on the grill. I do like the portion size, great for sharing! Not taking away from the overall vibe and good sushi... That's the main reason why I come. I usually dine with a picky eater or two so this menu works for my group. The Gyoza is nicely charred on one side and overall satisfying. My friend really enjoyed her red curry bento dinner, especially the way the seaweed salad was presented - kudos for the good drizzle of dressing. While not in an actual traditional bento "box", creative plating did compartmentalize the set. The red bean rice was delicious. Best part was the all day pricing... It's a set price regardless lunch or dinner for these Bento's I had the sushi and sashimi combo for one, good sized portion and because of my shrimp allergy, they supplemented the usual shrimp roll for a spicy tuna roll per my request. Second favorite was the salt and pepper crispy soft shell crab. Deliciously crispy and salty and peppery. The lobster tacos were a 4/5 little on the bland side but still delicious, the little mini taco was super crispy. Chili garlic edamame had just the right amount of spice and garlic chips. The bento boxes were so elegantly served and came with a good amount of food. The short ribs were fall off the bone. Crispy beef is so good too, comes with white rice, delicious. Ordered some Sushi on Their website. When ordering on the website there is no way to order side sauces (Spicy Mayo) so I asked for it in the special instructions. Paid with credit card on line and when I went to pick up, they asked for $1.75. Told them to charge it on the same card as I didn't have my wallet on me, they said they can't. In Front of me she took out the Spicy mayo out of the takeout bag and handed me my bag! So glad we found this great Asian Fusion restaurant with delicious Bento boxes and sushi! They have been open since last year, and are open for both indoor dining and take out/delivery. The indoor dining has been open for the last few months now. They have great accommodations to keep their customers and staff safe including masks, distance between all of the tables. They have all their bases covered. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. Their interior design is superb. One of the nicest restaurant designs that I've seen in a while! Gave us great city vibes despite being out in Long Island. The staff were great and friendly. We conversed about their new restaurant and their start up and the food. They were very attentive and accommodating. There is parking in the back, $1 for 2 hours, as well as metered parking on the street. We came here for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed their lunch specials. My favorite was the Dragon Roll which had shrimp tempura and eel with a drizzle of eel sauce. My wife enjoyed her Great Neck Roll which was a good combination of salmon, tuna, yellowtail and avocado. The crunchy tuna appetizer was also delicious and had great texture. The price was also very reasonable. Would highly recommend this place! read more

They have a cute outdoor dining at the back of the restaurant and they also have huge parking behind the restaurant. Wish we knew this before parallel parking. Parking is not free so make sure you got quarters before coming. We never bring coins so I was trying to go to the bank to break a bill but lucky me it's closed so good thing some kids passing by had some lol anyway food is good I got some mixed seasonal vegetables with tofu and white rice and a side salad. I saw the rave reviews for Soku and ordered takeout online, since they had a 20% off online order promotion going on. I had high hopes, but I only felt disappointment after eating it. The piece of salmon was thin and anemic, and the teriyaki glaze was so watery it didn't stick to the salmon well. The Mongolia beef was incredibly bland. I expected it to be rich and savoury, but the flavor just wasn't there. I ordered shumai as a side, but was given soggy gyoza instead. The salad was fine but the miso soup tasted watered down. Overall the food was edible, but lacked the bold flavors that I was looking for. I was incredibly disappointed and do not think Soku was worth the price they charged. read more

Dishes We Had: - Sushi and Sashimi Combo for One ($32): Superb, very fresh. - SOKU Roll ($16): Tasty and light. - Kani Salad ($8): Very good, slightly spicy, could use more kani. - Salmon Avocado Roll ($6): OK. - Exotic Bomba ($9): A mostly mango sorbet (slightly tart) with some raspberry sorbet, in a chocolate shell. - Stir-Fried Japanese Udon with Chicken ($16): An unusual interpretation. It seemed like the noodles were marinated in an eggy-soup base then quickly stir-fried. The meat pieces were thin slivers and few. No one in our group who sampled this dish liked it. - Complimentary hot sake: Very good, for a complimentary sake. Service: Very Good (4 of 5). Very attentive. There is free, VPN-friendly Wi-Fi. On the date of our visit however, the restaurant provided cheap disposable wooden chopsticks that didn't match the rest of their fine cutlery and tableware. What drew us here on a rainy night was the parking lot (with meters) and private room. We needed a place to celebrate and discuss issues as a family over dinner with a familiar palate. My family prefers Asian cuisine, so this place offers an array of Japanese options even if the staff is Chinese. Whether it was their interesting rolls, una don, shrimp tempura, duck tortilla, sashimi with truffle oil and sea salt, everything tasted fresh and edible. The service is solid by the staff, but nothing stood out as spectacular. When I asked for something special for their chef's special (omakase), we got five slices of sashimi for a few types of regular fish (e.g., tuna, salmon, octopus) with a few unique ones that I can't remember given they weren't that memorable in terms of flavor. Whilst the freshest fish usually don't have a fishy taste, I wished I could taste the ocean like other restaurants. Many parts of Asia are already cultural fusions unto itself (i.e. Vietnamese = Viet-Indo-Sino-French), so I hold anything that calls itself Fusion to a higher standard. On my last visit to Soku, I was part of a party, so I kept an open mind. I tend to avoid anything marketed as "Asian Fusion" because it's usually a Mashup of otherwise authentic flavors and seldom is it executed well. Sadly, Soku proved my point. While I want to give this place more stars, I. just. can't. I'm going to be very blunt with this review, starting with the good, and sadly ending with what needs to be improved. Strengths: The sushi, for what was given, was fresh. A little on the pricey side for the portions, but the fish was fresh, not slimy, and just a tinge of fresh ocean brininess. Among our selections, our party got the triple Maki dinner ($19) and the spicy triple Maki ($22). Overall, it was just okay, which earned it an extra bump in rating. The ratio of rice to fish was good, but was on par with any local take- away sushi lunch, only this was for dinner. A little fresh shiso leaf would've likely elevated the dishes to rationalize price point. Nothing worth coming back for. The beef teriyaki was also decent, but average. The meat was cooked well; we surmised that it was a sirloin cut, but as a whole the dish lacked flavor. Pre-seasoning or re configuring the marinate recipe would help. Weaknesses: A number of the appetizers and hot entrees were an unfortunate mess. - The duck entree was overcooked and dry. - The Thai chicken, as one of our fellow diners remarked, didn't have enough actual chicken. -The "Indian Pancake" was Chinese Scallion pancake with what was supposed to be coconut curry, but was actually Thai sweet chili sauce (really, opportunity missed here, could've had a roti or stuffed dosa and curry dip. Please change the name, there's nothing Indian about this appetizer.). If they gave us the wrong doing sauce, then that's a reflection of their error. -The Naruto roll app (cucumber wrapped over 3 types of raw fish) was nice in presentation, but fell apart the second it was picked up. Also, was served with ponzu or what tasted like dumpling dipping sauce. - The Red snapper was, in reality, deep fried fish filets, not a whole red snapper like we thought. I am guessing this was from frozen, as the fish itself wasn't seasoned well and the breaded crust was thick. It needed the accompanying mango sauce. Again, this dish was okay, but not what we expected given the price. - The Creamy Seafood hot entree was a mix of FROZEN seafood tossed with asparagus & zucchini (at least that tasted fresh) soaked with coconut milk. This was something I could've made at home as a "have to use what's in my fridge" meal, not something I would pay for. The single "lobster tail" (which was looked suspiciously like a langostine, or must've been a really short lobster) and shrimp were both rubbery, and the scallops were thin & limp, which is why I dare claim they were from frozen. The sauce lacked any fresh seafood flavor; had the seafood been cooked from fresh, the color of the sauce would have been different and the natural essence from the shellfish would've oozed into the sauce, imparting a savory brine from the sea. Nope, this was just coconut milk and a dash of salt. I ended up experimenting by mixing the coconut sauce with other sauce on the table, like the sweet chili mango sauce, from another dish to make the entree more palatable, but no customer should have to do that. I get that a restaurant might use frozen seafood, but if they are, it signals to me that this dish doesn't have a high turnover rate. Given the price of the dish, a high class place like this shouldn't even offer it on the menu at the risk of having a poor review such as this one. Saving grace on the hot entrees was the included purple rice, but TBH I'm not coming back just for the rice. Given the price point, overall our meal was not worth it. Yes, we finished our meal, mainly because we wanted to be polite to our party host and we were hungry. After looking over the reviews in hindsight, I realized a majority of the high ratings are from their Bento boxes (not offered for weekend dinner), online orders (which offer a 20% off promo), or take out lunch sushi... all of which undoubtedly make up in their value. This place might be a good spot for a date night, given the romantic ambiance and decor, but bring your date here if hot food standards aren't high. TL;DR: Rather than true Asian Fusion, the menu reflects a random smattering of individual dishes from various parts of Asia, and EVEN THEN, dishes are not executed well. This place should stick with their sushi, it's the only thing that was executed properly. read more

It's been a while since I've had sushi and I'm glad I got my first bite of some here at Soku! Conveniently located within 10 minutes of LIJ/Northwell Hospital, this is a wonderful place to get dinner after a visit there (I also saw hospital personnel dining here so it must be a favorite with the staff there). As at most Asian fusion places, there's something for everyone here. I know a lot of people that think if there's too many cuisines going on in a place, it's not terribly authentic nor good, but it seems Soku is the exception to that philosophy as all five of us at the table absolutely loved our food (most of us had sushi, but my SIL had a Korean fried chicken cutlet and said it was excellent). I had a peanut/avocado roll and 2 cucumber avocado rolls and they were absolutely outstanding. I know that a lot of people think that vegetable sushi isn't terribly impressive, but I've had a lot of it and it's not always good. For example, at Soku, the peanuts in the peanut/avocado roll are minced super tiny so that the texture is extremely appealing and toothsome. The avocado is perfectly ripe and creamy (I've been to so many sushi places where it's unripe and inedible, which I can only assume is because the knives are so sharp, as they should be, that they cut through easily enough that the staff isn't aware of the fact that it's too hard to eat). The rice is expertly cooked and seasoned and the nori is nutty instead of fishy. Super important to me as I hate a fishy nori sheet. The staff is absolutely lovely, from hostess to waitress to food runners. They have a robust wine, sake and cocktail list, which was very much needed last night. The atmosphere is sleek, sophisticated, yet comfortable with banquet seating and chairs. I'm rarely in the Great Neck area, but I can easily see myself returning here on my way back from LI to the Hudson Valley. They have plenty of vegan options for when I'm not in the mood for sushi, however it would be hard to pass up those incredible veggie rolls! read more
