This is an updated review - we decided to give this place another try after a 2 year break since we had such a poor experience last time. It looks like it is under new ownership, new waitstaff and menus, etc. The previous rude waitress is no longer there, much to our relief. We did not experience any changes in food quality or portions under the new ownership. The prices were around the same as last time, and fish is still fresh and tasty. Service was excellent, our waiter was very attentive and food was served promptly. My husband got the omakase platter and I did a la carte, the toro sushi is excellent and highly recommended. Looks like the new owners and new menu, also renovated. They have some specials that give it a more modern twist. Hamachi Kama was delicious and well cooked. The yamaguchi roll and sashimi was just okay. They had kinki fish which is from Japan- it was certainly something I've not tried before- I preferred the hamachi over the kinki but it was prepared nicely. read more

This used to be owned by a lovely Japanese couple, the husband being the head chef, up until a week ago who served authentic and delicious homestyle Japanese food and the freshest sushi where fish was flown in from Japan as well. Well Sadly that has come to an end as of March 2025. They stayed afloat by offering take out only during the pandemic with a limited menu but finally came back into the full swing of their menu when they started opening again for dine in. Sadly the owners have retired and moved back to Japan and the new owners are not Japanese and have already removed most of the homestyle options on the menu that the locals and out of town visitors alike would come here to enjoy. The restaurant was full of screaming chinese speakers from the patrons and the staff and they had their contractor walking around with an employee darting in and out between tables looking at what's to fix and change. I didn't choose a Chinese restaurant to go to for my dinner. Food was not as it used to taste, the spicy roll was bland and the rice had too much water added to it that it was mushy and tasteless. It was good to see a couple of familiar servers that used to be there with the old owners but service with the new staff was not how it used to be either. Sad to see another authentic Japanese restaurant not be that anymore. read more

March 18 The lunchtime Grand Opening with new management did not disappoint. On the contrary, its Sushi A entrée was a near-perfect experience. Not only was each item (tuna, salmon, hamachi, etc.) on point as to mouthfeel, taste and temperature, what sent my evaluation over the top was the usually quiet corner in dishes like this, the scallop and the shrimp. I was concerned when new owners took over Yamaguchi on Main Street but my fears were allayed when I went there. It is currently my favorite Japanese restaurant in town. Yamaguchi is one of the only & best Japanese restaurants serving authentic & traditional Japanese cuisine on Long Island. In a couple of weeks that will change. i was in a local facebook port wash group and knew about new ownership before coming here. The fb group talked about how the owner will strive for the same freshness...etc... - sushi was good. - it definitely got alot smaller than before. I remember the yamaguchi used to be "wow its such big piece of fish" and now its average. - price, i think its about the same as before. not much difference. - I was the first table on Saturday , walked in at 5pm. server was okay, average, they dont bother me, i dont bother them. However , when my kid put the last piece of salmon in his mouth, and i was still drinking my beer on my hand - the waitress came by and asked if i my wife still needed anything, and my wife said no. she took away all of the plates, yes my son was still chewing with chopstick on his hand, and within 45 seconds when i was still holding my beer - she brought over the check and walked away. i was the still the ONLY table in the entire restaurant.. I thought she was very rude for doing that. My wife also thought so... needless to say, i paid my minimum 15% based on the food cost and will never come back anymore. read more

I am not impressed with this restaurant due to different management. I was hearing the workers were speaking in chinese. So I found out the original owners retired. The service is pretty terrible because I hate the rushed service especially the amount we spent there. We both had the omakase dish, it was good but they pretty much kicked us out in 30 minutes. The authenticity of this place was what made this place great but now it is just every other japanese restaurant that are owned by chinese people all over long island. Under new ownership - not as good as it used to be. Salmon sushi had a thin white layer on the side (don't even know what to call it). Shrimps had a black spot on the tail (don't know what that's about). We miss the prior owners very much as they knew how to prepare authentic high quality Japanese foods. Love this husband and wife restaurant with high quality sashimi and variety of Japanese dishes at such a reasonable price! The sashimi Omakase is fresh and mouthwatering with hon wasabi. The tempura and tonkatsu batter is crispy and light without being too oily or having the reused oil taste. The uni is heavenly as if it was just cracked open from the shell. The appetizers with squid or octopus are tender, tasty, and worth coming back for. Service is friendly and generous. Parking is ample in the back of the restaurant. I'll be back for sure! read more

Probably one of the two best sushi restaurants in Port Washington. Fish is super fresh and the rice is cooked just right. Their fish really melts in your mouth. Omakase is very much worth the price and the dinner sushi sashimi combo is an excellent choice that won't set you back as much. Overall, the food quality is A+. But the take out service is abysmal. Once quoted 40 min wait that turned into a 75 min wait. Once called and then the lady just left the phone. So if you're wondering why there's almost always a busy signal, it might be because she picks up the phone and then just leaves it there?!! If they can get the service together, this place would be a five star restaurant. That said, given that this is still my top 2 favorite sushi restaurants in not just Port, but all of Nassau County, I'll keep going because the food really is THAT good. read more

Wonderful local place right off the main streets of Port Washington! The waitstaff were kind--a bunch of very nice ladies. Lots of great Japanese food options depending on your mood. Speaking of mood, the atmosphere is so friendly, quiet, family-friendly. You can come here like I did with a party of three to eat casually, ordering a small selection of sashimi, rolls, appetizer, and soba noodles. There are also fancier items on the menu. The sashimi selection was fresh and delicious, with a nice choice of salmon, tuna, white tuna, yellowtail, and others. They have new boss and menu. Though most items are kept on the new menu, quality went down. Sashimi is not as fresh, tempura batter is thick and greasy. We ordered udon and that is the biggest disappointment. They use thin flat noodles instead of udon. There is nothing in the broth, not even a few scallion pieces. It's the worst udon I ever have. The kids couldn't get enough of the Hamachi Kama. Only downside was that the food took too long to come out. But that's because the sushi chef was the male owner, which may be on the good side. I have been eating at Yamaguchi since it opened. Now I bring my kids there and they love it too. I adore the simple Japanese dishes like agedashi tofu and the perfectly done sushi, sashimi and maki with rice that is always just the right temperature and seasoning. I also love that they do not play music. It's a calm, welcoming and warm atmosphere. The noodle and rice dishes are excellent. Price is only half compared to other sushi places in Manhattan with the same quality. Whenever we want fresh and decent raw fish, we come here. Never feel disappointed! The kitchen food are good too. My son had karikatsu (fried chicken cutlet) tonight. We thought it might be dry and hard, but it came out juicy and perfect. I was recommended this place by a couple of people (who evidently didn't know good sushi) we had made a reservation and were seated in a tight corner upon arriving. After waiting 15 minutes my girlfriend had to get up and request menus for us, at no point the entire meal were we even given waters. The waiter was pushy and rushy when taking our order for drinks. About 35 minutes later he returned to take our food order and while taking our order was reciting the price to us as if we didn't know how to read the price alongside the food on the menu. When the food arrived it was reaaaaaally mediocre to say the least. We ordered the omasake sushi and sashimi and it was reaaaaally subpar. The service was atrocious! I would never go back to this place. And if you're looking for ambiance this was basically a sushi diner if that's what you're into. Terrible terrible terrible! read more
