One of the unique things in Upstate NY are the chicken BBQ's that are often fundraising events. Often rectangular cinderblocks formed into a rectangle... and chicken marinated in Chiavetta's locked into chicken wire with four handled over hot coals... BBQ not in the southern sense but it's a great thing... Chiavetta's is a vinegary tang (with apple cider vinegar) and some mysterious spices (pepper and garlic for sure). For those of you who can't get to one of the events as described... Chiavetta's has a take out place near Lockport...chicken and ribs with assorted sides like mac n cheese, baked beans, and a really good potato salad. Pretty unassuming place (they also do catering and will do the BBQ fundraisers for you) right off Transit Road (Route 78). There isn't really much of a reason to go to Lockport unless you are heading up to Lake Ontario, but it's not far from Buffalo/Williamsville/Amherst. Good stuff! read more

The service was fast & friendly. It's also nice to be able to have Chiavettas chicken whenever you want rather than having to catch a sale at a church or school. The ordering is "cafeteria style". I ordered two three meat meals, which come with two sides and a roll or cornbread and a half chicken to go. Meat options include chiavettas chicken, ribs, brisket and pulled pork; I tried all of them. Sides include coleslaw, Greek pasta salad, tuna mac salad, baked beans and mac & cheese. I enjoyed everything except the brisket & BBQ sauce. The brisket had a good flavor, but it was tough and had a lot of fat. The BBQ sauce had more of a ketchup taste rather than a BBQ one. This is a classic Lockport restaurant that is perfect for catering. They have great side options for vegetarians with there amazing au gratin potatoes and amazing roles. Even though I am vegetarian I have herd only good things about there chicken. They have great survive with such helpful staff. Haven't seen a fish fry that big and that tasty in a long time and a very reasonable price with two sides I had the German potato salad which was good but I like it with a little bit more vinegar and the mac and cheese. Everything was good. The service was prompt. The staff was very helpful. The restaurant was very clean and they had large tables so a large group can sit together. My first exposure to Chivettas was years ago when we first moved to Buffalo. We had planned a visit to the Erie County Fair and the one thing several people told me was that I had to do was visit the Chivettas chicken booth. At that point you pretty much could only get Chivettas at the fair or pop-up bbq fundraisers around town. Well I spotted their booth and thought it better be good because I swear they had the longest line of any place there. So, first bite and I was hooked! Loved their tender juicy chicken, their excellent BBQ sauce (not sweet), and delicious tomato/ cucumber salad. Fast forward many years, now they actually have the permanent location (while also still doing their famous pop-ups) you can visit. It's actually been there for about 10 years now and just finally doing a review. We tried placing our take-out order on line. We made our selection but when trying to submit we just got the endless spinning circle that wouldn't stop. We drove there and placed the order inside. Pretty fast since all the food was in trays ready to fill the orders. Good and bad. I got au gratin potatoes that were a bit cold and appeared to have been sitting there for a while. My cole slaw was good and the chicken was decent. I was unhappy to not be able to get the tomato/ cucumber salad since it wasn't offered as a side. It was just a bit of a disappointing visit between the ordering problem, cold potatoes, and no tomato/ cucumber salad. We substituted the pulled pork which I wouldn't normally order, but it was very good. Chicken - vinegary, moist and very good. It was terrific and the taste is that distinctive Chiavetta's tang that WNYs love. Ribs - very good. It was cooked well and tasted good, but we definitely liked the chicken better. I am a fan of Chavetta's Chicken. A summer doesn't go by that I don't partake at one of our many local catholic churches or festivals that is doing a chicken dinner sale. We reside in Clarence and I sent my son there to pick up take out and we were looking forward to giving it try. Big Fail. The chicken was VERY dry and tasted like it had been reheated from the day before. The ribs were VERY VERY tough. They had sauce slathered on them after cooking which seemed odd. I actually had to turn on the oven and re heat in order for it to appear cooked all the way. I sent my son in early in the day. They opened at 11 and he was there about 11:15. He got half of chicken and slab or ribs. We were thoroughly disappointed with the food. Hopefully they will do a much better job in the future. A great place to get chiavettas and ribs. The baked beans are really good as well as the greek bowtie pasta. We tried their garlic and hot & spicy BBQ sauces and the hot and spicy was delicious. The spice was just right with a perfect blend of sweet and smokey. I personally thought the roasted garlic was too garlicky but wasn't terrible. The meals are a really good size and come with a protein, 2 sides and a choice of roll or corn bread. The beef on weck was good but not the best I've had. Chiavetta's BBQ is a Buffalo staple. My family and I have had several (8 or 9) take away meals from here. I can highly recommend the beef brisket and the chicken. These are my personal favorites. The cornbread is REALLY good- do not leave here without some. The pasta salads are hit and miss but if you want to get one the bow tie pasta is the one to go with. The dining area inside is small and needs updating. They do upon occasion have seating outside under a huge white tent. My best recommendation is to try everything and see what you enjoy. read more

After some tourism in the nearby Lockport area we were looking for dinner and spotted this place via Yelp. We were fired up to try their brisket after reading the rave reviews. Alas they were not only out of brisket but also pulled pork and almost all of their hot sides. Be warned that since this place closes early, 7pm on Saturday for example, they are likely to be out of food later in the day. We were really disappointed. So our only choices were the ribs and the chicken. The ribs were outstanding - falling off the bone tender with a nice sauce (I'm guessing based on their chicken marinade). The chicken was not bad but a bit dry despite their marinade. This is one reason I rarely order chicken at BBQ places - it tends to be dry. The four sides we tried were all pretty good with the exception of the dull potato salad. Prices for two meats and two sides was reasonable at $11. If ever back in this area or near another one of their locations I will stop just to see if they have brisket available! read more

They did have a good smoked color to them but lacked flavor. The brisket was basically the same in texture and flavor. The sides were baked beans that tasted like grocery canned ones and the Mac and cheese was watery and overcooked. The corn bread slice was the star of the show.
