Place is clean. Waitress was friendly. Hubby ordered veal special. He said it was just OK. It came with some funky brown noodles that he hated. I ordered vegetable lasagna, which was swimming in sweet red sauce. Ordered tea to drink and it tasted like it was made with straight tap water. Didn't taste great. Was not expecting red sauce, but thought veggie lasagna usually has a creamy sauce more like Alfredo. I could only choke down about half of that lasagna and left the rest. On the positive side, our salads were delicious and the ranch dressing was also very good and tasted homemade. Tried some of other food at our table (fries, chicken fingers) that were good. Very disappointed with the fish fry.. Charged $18.99 for a nothing to write home about piece of fish and a very skimpy portion of soggy cold fries. Cole slaw wasn't great either. I just got back to Western New York, from living in Georgia for 30 years. I happened to think about Wagner's home made chili. I call there and they said they don't have it all the time, but I was in luck the day I called. They still had some and I ordered 3 bowls for takeout. They don't make it all the time like they used to. But, as I said, " I lucked out and I got 2 bowls of it. And guess what-it's as good as it was 30 years ago. They have a good beef on weck. Wings are spot on. Fish Fry was good but lacking on the sides. No loganberry! It's a buffalo staple and I feel it should be in every restaurant. Service was a little off. People got served before us, even though they arrived after us. They dropped the coleslaw off and 10 mins later the hubby got his fish. Not a huge deal. Truly an amazing dining experience. Our service (although I can't recall her name) was the best part, which is saying something because the food is amazing. Our waitress was very attentive, fun, and had a lot of good conversation (she said she's been there for 37 years). The wings at Wagner's are very underrated compared to any place in buffalo and have now become a favorite of mine. French onion soup and beef on weck were absolutely amazing. Think about your favorite place to get a roast beef sandwich...and if you're from WNY and like roast beast, you know you have one or two places. Think about it long and hard....then FUHGEDDABOUDIT! Wagner's is hands down the best. To give you some insight on how good Wagner's is, I've taken coworkers from Washington, Nebraska, California, Iceland and Switzerland to Wagner's (often after getting wings at the "originator" places), to let them experience both Roast Beef on Weck and (more) chicken wings (both together are called "Johnnie's Special") and every.single.time they have said "this place is the best place you've taken us!" Mind you, it's not the prettiest place...it looks like an older house on a beat up industrial street but it's worth it. It is the perfect rust belt experience and the best food. I highly recommend the Johnnies Special or the Park Ave...the Roast Beef Deluxe (I just tried this today and have included a photo), or the open faced RB sandwich (which is exactly how my family used to make them). I love Wagner's and have yet to find someone who doesn't like it here. Make the trek to Lockport and find this hidden gem! read more

We hadn't been there in a few years, so we figured we would give them another try. We ordered wings and specifically asked for crispy. After a half hour wait the wings finally came out. First of all they were NOT hot. Seemed like they were left on the counter for awhile. Secondly they were NOT crispy. So it was back to the same old thing there. We had hoped with Dom now in the kitchen, that he would keep an eye on things. But I guess that is not the case. Been going to Wagners since I was a kid. Great food always. This time, we went on a Friday Afternoon. Was busy, and they only had one server on! Ordered 2 fish fry's and 10 wings. 25 minutes went by, and the people that came in after us were getting their fish fry's before us. She said " the wings take a while!" . 40 minutes later we got our food. As good as the food was, sorry, but WNY's full of wing places that make wings under 30 minutes. This review is for their chicken wings, because we ordered to go and waited briefly inside while our order was being prepared. The interior is homey and wait staff was very friendly! We ordered 30 garlic parm wings and a side of garlic bread with cheese. The wings were delicious- perfectly crispy and well-seasoned. The garlic bread was also delicious (even though it's basically just bread and cheese- it's some goooood bread and cheese). Pricing isn't bad, and they have $0.50 wing nights on Tuesdays! I love this place for a end of the week Friday fish fry..... but my tastes today were for something a little different. I decided on the Johnnies Special....a Beef on Weck with 5 wings. I went with the wet Cajun sauce for the wings. The meal arrived in a short time and was simply delicious! The roast beef was shaved thin, warm and moist. The roll was soft and the seasoning on it was perfect. Added some horseradish and it enjoyed it very much. The wings were cooked perfectly, good sized and the Cajun sauce had the perfect amount of sweetness, spice and tang like a good Cajun seasoning sauce should have. Came with a cup of blue cheese for dipping and carrot and celery sticks. Sat at the bar and was served by Kathleen the bartender. Very friendly and sweet woman. The meal with two draft beers came to a little over 21 dollars. Not expensive at all and worth every penny. Wagner's is old school good food in a old house converted to a bar and restaurant. I don't think much has changed inside since it opened over 60 years ago, and that's fine with me. Was clean inside and I felt very welcomed there. You need to try this place!!!! read more

Wagner's is sort of a peculiar little joint that's half bar, half restaurant, and the building looks like it used to be someone's modular home. My dad likes to talk about the 'good old days' when he'd go to Wagner's for a roast beef and beer at lunchtime, back in the day when dad worked in Lockport (and still drank, and drank at lunchtime). So, what's my point? My dad is a goofball, and this place has been around for awhile. Like 50 years. I like this place, and we go to eat here every once in awhile because: 1. They're pretty cheap, and so am I. 2. They have kid's meals, and I have a kid. 3. Sometimes I just can't face the idea of cooking dinner. Anyway, we dined here most recently on 12/22/08. The waitress got major points for bringing crayons and a coloring book to my son without prompting, and the service was friendly and fast. Usually, when we go out, I'm worried about my son being a little loud and bothering the oher diners. The only place in Lokcport I don't have to really worry about this is at CrApplebee's, right? Anyway, on this night, there were only two other tables occupied (it was still pretty early - about 5:45pm) and a jackass at one of the other tables had his cellphone turned up way loud and kept getting calls. And taking them. Loudly. So, my son was actually pretty well behaved compared to said jackass. Nothing against Wagner's, I just thought it worth mentioning. Lockport does kind of suck. If you do go to Wagner's, I suggest you stick to the sandwiches and appetizers part of the menu, and maybe avoid the pastas and steaks. No one can be great at everything, and I think Wagner's strength lies in the apps, wings, fingers, beef on weck and that kind of stuff. read more

In my pursuit to sample more of Lockport's hometown cuisine, I ran across this tiny little treat of a restaurant. Tucked away from the main historic downtown thoroughfare of East Ave, Wagner's is a small, simple house converted to restaurant. A lovely old wooden bar faces you as you enter. Small cafeteria-style table and chairs make for an increased air of unpretentiousness. I was sat towards the back and immediately perused the menu. I was determined to sample the beef on weck sandwich I had heard so much about! I ordered it with a salad and a bowl of baked French onion soup. The soup was beyond heavenly. Served in an earthenware bowl, it was piping hot and thick with cheesy goodness. Wonderful flavour danced on my tongue, enhanced by bread cubes! This soup is a first-class winner! It has just a hint of sweetness and is robust with onion. I chose unsweetened ice tea to chase my food choices. They definitely know how to make tea! No watered-down junk here to be found! They have Splenda, too. The diabetic in me is thankful for that, as there are other places in town that have lacked an alternative sweetener. Soon, the beef on weck appeared - thin-shaved roast beef on a bun served with horseradish on the side. Now, I read that the bun traditionally should be a kümmel weck roll with Kosher salt and caraway seeds on top. Well, needless to say, that is exactly what I got! It was fluffy, soft, and warm. The beef was tender, juicy, and ever so tasty! My only complaint is that I would have cooked it a little more on the rare side, but what flavour!! Coupled with the Kosher saltiness of the roll, the sandwich was a delight for the tastebuds! The salad served was fresh iceberg with cherry tomatoes and carrot shavings, topped with shredded cheese. Bottled balsamic vinaigrette dressing served in a small plastic cup on the side. No wow here, but still, it was fresh and not the bagged crap! My price tag for this meal came to just under 20 bucks with tip! Very reasonable for dinner! I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and the experience. While in Lockport shopping, my mom and I decided that we needed lunch in a major way. I immediately thought of Wagner's based on the P Family recommendations. Siri directed us to this old house converted into a tavern/restaurant. If you didn't know it was there, you'd think you were just driving through an old residential neighborhood. Parking is on the street only. There's no lot. This wasn't an issue for us since it was 2pm and most of the lunch crowd was gone. We walked in the side door. Bar on the right, dining area on left. Looks like the dining area has been more recently renovated than the bar, which looks like it's probably the same way it's been for decades. We're seated with menus. I feel like I hit the jackpot that we were here on a Friday... FISH FRY!!! Though the Ps recommended the beef on weck I just couldn't deny my desire for a beer battered fish fry. My mom and I both ordered a cup of the French Onion soup. I got the full fish fry with fries and she got the hot roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes. The French Onion was DELICIOUS! One of the best I've ever had. Deep, rich broth. Strong worcestershire note, carmelized onion, tasty cheese broiled on top. And for $3, the "cup" was a really ample portion. The fish fry was AMAZING! The fish was a huge portion. Perfectly crisp batter. It was a tad greasy underneath. Something that could have been helped by setting it on a paper towel for a minute once out of the fryer. But no big deal to me. The fries were crispy and delicious! I'm not a coleslaw person but theirs was okay, more on the sweet side. My mom is picky about beef. She judges good beef on whether it has a metallic flavor, which is not a good thing. I know exactly what she means, though it doesn't bother me too much. Wagner's beef tasted like metal. She was turned off by it. I thought the beef was still nice and tender but not the best I've ever had. Not Anderson's or Charlie the Butcher beef but good! This place really has great food! We came for the wings! They have $0.50 wings on Tuesday so we decided too give it a shot. In order to get the $0.50 wings you HAVE to dine in. We ordered 25 wings total. 10 suicide, 10 Cajun wet, and 5 crispy regular wings with a dinner Caesar salad. We were welcomed and seated by a very sweet lady, but our waitress was a little hostile. When we first ordered our sons wings we thought about getting him 10 and get a to go box for the ones he didn't finish. She immediately replied with you can not take the wings to go (even though we were dining in regardless). So we assumed we wasn't allowed to take them as leftovers. Towards the end of our meal we noticed other customers getting to go boxes. So we asked the women that sat us if we could and she said "of course, but the boxes would cost us $1.00." So thankfully we were still able to still take the wings we didn't finish home with us. The restaurant it's self was very clean and welcoming. Going into Wagner's you have to know what you are walking into. It's a hole in the wall bar with a small dining room of about 15 tables on the back side. Ok, so now you know. Time to move past that fact. Beers are your standard domestic draught and bottles. Prices are reasonable to cheap. Onto the food. This isn't the place you'd go for surf 'n turf, but bar food is definitely where it's at. We were told that the wings, beef on wick and reubens are pretty good so I was kinda excited! We went with a big group of 9 of us, and we all got one of those three, wings, reuben, and beef on wick. Prices are so cheap it's awesome. A beef on wick sandwich is only $5! There was also a nice deal called the Jonnies special of a beef sandwich and 5 wings for $10. So I was able to try 2 of things so I was happy. My father got the reuben which is nothing new for him, if its on the menu one of us will order it. Both of us were surprised how tender the corn beef was! My beef on wick was awesome, juicy and highly recommended! One odd thing though, the salt on the bun was a.) too much and b.) fell off everywhere to the point where there was salt literally all over the table from everyone's sandwiches. I got the bourbon wings with my sandwich and it was nothing special. For a great beef on wick or reuben Wagner's is a solid option. read more

So this is going to be one of my longer reviews because I have a lot to say about this place. I hope you'll stay tuned to hear me out on this hidden gem. Went here recently for the very first time with a friend who used to work in the Lockport area. I had never knew this place existed until then. My friend asked me to go with her to visit her mother in Lockport and then we decided to grab some food afterwards. I had a couple recommendations myself for places to go nearby, but she said we have to go to Wagner's. She kept mentioning it having some of the best beef on weck and wings in WNY. I kept sarcastically laughing at her for saying this because I am a serious foodie here and having been born and raised in WNY I know my wings and beef on weck and I had never heard of this place. It was an absolutely bitter cold night in early January and the roads were covered in snow when we pulled up to this old house with white siding and an old fashioned sign out front that read: Wagner's Beef on Weck. Out of towners be sure to take note that anytime a WNY restaurant goes out of their way to write the words "beef on weck" on their sign they mean business. The inside atmosphere is simple and small town-esque. Tables close together and an old fashioned bar with a few beers on tap. Once seated and looking over the menu I knew I was going to get the beef on weck obviously and when the words "award winning wings" caught my attention I knew I would be going with those as well. Looking over their drink menu I saw that they mainly had several types of martinis so I went with an apple-tini. The apple-tini was mixed well, no complaints there. But when the first star of the show, the beef on weck, hit the table I knew it was going to be a good meal. First, the weck roll was absolute perfection. With this beef on weck I would have to say that the weck roll itself stood out the most to me. Thick, fluffy, soft, fresh, and the perfect amount of caraway seeds and kosher salt on top. The beef I would've preferred a bit more rare but it was still tender, juicy, and piled thick. My main complaint though would be weak horseradish. The horseradish needed to be stronger. Overall, this beef on weck was a winner and easily makes it into my top five list. The weck roll used wins as being the best I've ever had. The wings were large, meaty, juicy, and soaked to the bone with flavor. These wings easily make it into my top wings list. Yes! Total score! I found a place that does both Buffalo culinary specialties very well! Because this place does both beef on weck AND wings very well I'm dubbing it the Bar Bill Tavern of the North. If you're not familiar with Bar Bill in East Aurora look it up on here. Anyways Wagner's is a total gem and its so low key. Definitely eat here! We've been trying to order from them for a few weeks now. We are very determined to eat there, but it's hard to get through on the phone. Almost impossible. We finally ordered some fish fry this weekend. Delicious, probably the best I've had in Lockport. Coleslaw was so so, I like it thickly dressed but this was kinda dry as slaw goes. Fish was great, fries were fresh and crispy. I like crispy fries. Prices were good too. When we picked it up, the servers were courteous and kind. The restaurant was packed. It became clear why they had trouble with phones. It's busy there. It's best just to walk in and order, the wait might be significant. If you're ordering for takeout you have to be as determined as we were. Is it worth it? Maybe. I guess. Depends on how much you want their food. A lot of people want their food on Friday. read more

Instead of the hostess saying anything she handed them menus and told me it would a bit longer she was waiting for someone else to leave, leaving me to wait.
