My daughter and I went here with a friend and her three kids Tuesday for lunch. Parking was blehhhh since the construction is blocking off the road. Can't seem to get away from all the construction nowadays everywhere. Couldn't tell if the place was open but apparently it was at 1pm on a Tuesday. We get up the ramp and the place is dead but a server comes out pretty quickly. I see a sign that states its kids eat free on Tuesday. I get told by the server that it only is for dinner (even though there's no mention of that on the sign). I figured, oh well, lunch menus are typically cheaper. It's fine. EXCEPT ITS NOT - it's like $25 is the average lunch option on the paper menu within the menu - the cheapest option would have been a "light green salad" for $16. On the kids menu itself, it ALSO states kids eat free with adult menu purchase of $20+. I ask the server again and she says "this is just what the owners told me." So word of advice to the owners - don't be advertising something and not holding up your end of the bargain. I don't have a "customer is always right" mentality, I have a "keep your word & don't false advertise" mentality. Pros: Food was good. Service was fine. Ambience was nice sans the bugs. Cons: obviously the price. Obviously the false advertising. Bugs were nonstop in our faces and food but we dealt. It was hot out so to be expected. We had a reservation and were seated promptly. Many thanks for that. ordered drinks and apps which were fantastic and fast. Ordered entrees, that's where it went a little south. Not sure how big the place is, we only saw 3 other tables, all of whom had been served. Somehow it took nearly an hour for our food to arrive. That put a bad spin on dinner. Food was good, lots of choices. Service was great I know the server has nothing to do with the kitchen. Personally I actually prefer a smaller portion on my Nigiri, maybe larger portions are a midwest thing. If you are getting a California roll get two, you'll devour the first one and wonder where it went. I would recommend placing Sushi orders immediately rather than waiting. read more

Definitely not the same Chiba restaurant since we dined there in the springtime. Tonight was the worst dining experience I have ever experienced. Our waitress seemed nice but forgetful when it came to bringing our food 40 minutes + after we ordered. Two of our dinners tasted terrible and one of them had to be sent back to the kitchen. To make matters worse the waitress tried to make things right by offering to bring another glass of wine to our friend whose meal was sent back to the kitchen. Our friend never received that glass of wine and was charged twice for wine that she only received one glass. After dining here tonight unfortunately we will not be returning back due to the horrible service and questionable tasting conditions of the food served. read more

The California roll was just ok, the tofu was one big soggy piece which was kind of weird, and the blueberry bread pudding was so bad that I asked for it to be sent back. This is without a doubt, one of my absolute favorite restaurants in Westfield! I have never had a bad meal here and every single time I come I am treated so well and I absolutely love solo dining here. I almost always get sushi, the steamed buns, the seaweed salad, and the miso soup. But truly, any dish on the menu is just so good. There are always some type of special on drinks and food. My absolute favorite part about Chiba is the wonderful service I get particularly from the owner. I dine here a lot so I've gotten to know the owner and sitting in the bar area while he is bartending is probably one of my favorite experiences. Not only does he makes some good drinks, but he is also super personable and carries a great conversation! Chiba is fabulous. My friends and I came for lunch today and were treated like queens by the owner. Some of our favorite things were the sake flight, one of the seasonal, specialty roles, the teriyaki salmon, the tempura shrimp. You have to try the salad! The dressing is so fresh and delicious. I must set aside my affinity with grunge, see 2013 Memphis Grizzlies culture, and accept a new age. Yet this sushi spot rode the fence like your neighborhood red squirrel. Let these servers dress it up or dress it down, but all black athleisure isn't the option my guy. Find the heartbeat! As for my formal responsibility to speak on food, here goes. Andrew Jackson is worth far more than this Speciality Sushi Roll. For free, it's all the rave. For twenty dollars, let's reassess. Lastly, don't expect fast. All I can say is "Yum"! Not a bad dish on the menu! Even the miso soup was delicious. My only complaint is the temperature by the windows in the restaurant. Winter is just bad in older homes which is understandable, but it impedes the experience. We froze! Service was great--nothing more, nothing less. read more

Not sure what happened at our visit on Friday but we took this place off our list. We did not have good service and had to ask for our waters to be refilled. We had to ask another server to get our server to order another round of drinks. It took so long to get them! Food: the tuna nachos are never a bad choice. They were delicious! We also ordered edamame spicy and regular (plain). The spicy were covered overwhelmingly with the sauce. A little too much. We also ordered the pork gyoza and they came out overcooked and a little rubbery. Certainly not what we normally get! I ordered a fish dish and for the price it was a fair dish! I have had a rainbow roll other places so that's my choice today. RRR ordered shrimp avocado roll and a yellowtail scallion roll. All the sushi was wonderful. I wish I had taken pictures but the food and service were so good here! Had lunch special Salmon Teriyaki and the sauce was so good felt like I could just eat a bowl of rice with the sauce! And speaking of rice it was prepared so well it wasn't dry or overcooked which I think is hard to come across at a lot of Japanese restaurants. The tempura that came with the lunch special was crispy. Also tried the Mexican Grand Prix roll (fitting with F1 Mexico GP being this weekend) and it was so fresh and tasty! Great combination of ingredient flavors that went well together. The interior was cool and plenty of seating for parties of all sizes it seems like a fun place to go for dinner. We got seated in the outdoor eating area and I can see why it would be a cool place to go to for dining out. The service was very friendly - no complaints! We ordered salad, sushi and a chicken dish. We walked up to get a table last night and the hostess looked at us like "what do you want" then proceeded to say in a rude tone "do you have reservations!" We did not, so then she looked right past us at couple that walked in and said "do YOU have reservations?" When they said yes, she walked around us and straight to them and didn't say anything to us after walking away. So, we walked out! This type of treatment made me realize I will never go back there. We shared Panko Oysters, Pan seared mussels w/miso broth, Pork Dumplings Gyoza, Bridgewater Specialty Roll - 10 pcs (Full meal avocado on top), Mardi Gras Specialty roll - 10 pcs (Full meal). When we visited this cozy little street in Westfield, the Italian House across the street was much busier than Chiba, but those people don't know what they were missing! Dining at Chiba feels like being invited into the home of a very eclectic, hospitable friend. Yes, the front dining room is small and unfortunately loud if there are small children there, but there's also some wonderful little dining areas outside and in the back bar room. You have options, people. It would be hard to find fresher food of this variety anywhere in town. AND, our server was AJ, The unofficial mayor of westfield. He has just enough of everything good and some amazing reflexes! Come in for the happy hour specials (food and drink) before 6:00 p.m., and you will surely want to stay for dinner. My husband and I are fans of their specialty rolls. In addition to several shared appetizers we had the Louisiana Purchase roll, which had Brie in it, and the spicy crab caviar. The orange things on top of the crab roll are actually fish eggs that I would call roe-- not caviar-- but they pop in your mouth just like caviar, adding verve to the sensation experience. Btw, I would not call this spicy at all so don't be scared off by that description. Coconut chicken came with thin slices of pineapple on the side, which really added to the flavorful combination of this dish. One of the other guests in our group ordered Philly cheese steak egg rolls and raved about them. The soft buns are quite messy, so I would not recommend them if you are dining with someone you're trying to impress. I definitely recommend the Ahi poke bowl; although I don't usually eat raw fish, it was very good - lots of different tastes and beautiful presentation. As with any high art form, custom-made sushi takes some time so be patient and just enjoy the experience. It was not particularly busy on a Tuesday night but our food did take a while so I'm sure it takes even longer on a busy night. read more

Chiba is located in a cute little house on a small street of local businesses in Westfield. This is a neighborhood that you should visit at least once. The street has a plant and ice cream shop, as well as an Italian and pizza restaurant too. Chiba is the sushi-Hawaiian fusion spot on the street and offers up the best outdoor seating. Their website says that they don't do reservations, so when we arrived at 7pm on a Saturday night in summer, we thought we'd have to wait. Instead, the hostess seated us immediately, and we followed her as she winded us through the huge back seating area. There is a backyard stage, bar, and seats for more than 100 outside. We were super surprised, since the place looks small from the front. We got seated under the covered section by the stage. The band playing was SO good, but it was really loud. Our server was a little sassy, but I know hiring is hard right now. We started with the conch appetizer and it was really good. The conch was hard to chew, but that was my first time trying it, so I'm not sure if that's how it's supposed to be. We also got a few Kona beers, which was a fun Hawaiian twist. They have a full Hawaiian cocktail menu and many tropical food options as well to give you a vacation-like feel. I ordered the miso soup and a specialty roll (I'm blanking on the name, but it started with "Jay"). It was a cucumber-wrapped sushi roll, minus the rice. It was covered in a sweet sauce and it was almost impossible to eat. It was SO big and slippery that everytime I tried to get it with my chopsticks, it just slipped right out. I also couldn't eat it with my hands because of how messy it was, so I ended up just not finishing it. The miso soup was really good and I loved the scallions in it. I'd be down to go back, but I'd definitely order something different next time. Definitely visit during the summer! Really sad to leave this review. Was very excited to try a new place, and even more excited once we saw how fun the v location looked. Located on a cute, quiet street with a few other restaurants, this is a house made restaurant with a nice homey feel. The patio is incredibly spacious, lots of seating, a bar and a stage for a band. We came on a Friday night around 7 and expected to wait but ended up only waiting about 15 minutes. The hostess asked if we were okay sitting close to the live music since it would be loud, which was fine with us. Our server greeted us right away and was very pleasant the entire evening, letting us know about the two separate kitchens and that this might cause our meals to come out at different times. Edamame came with a TON. We were very impressed. It was on the room temperature side when we got it which was unfortunate, and with the quality it made the seasoning uneven and lacking. The highlight was the spring rolls. They were hot, fresh and tasty. The roll itself had great texture and wasn't flimsy like other places. Warm steak bowl was good, not unlike chipotle. The sushi was not good. Sad to say it because I was so looking forward to it, but I actually gagged on a piece of mine before deciding to go back to the cold edamame. The roll was huge which was fine, but almost to the point of needing to be cut in half. Flavor was okay at best. Went to the bathroom and the toilet didn't flush and was very dirty.
