Not sure how I feel about Chicago Ramen in Wheeling after my most recent experience... Since my kids had a lot of afternoon activities again and I didn't feel like cooking I decided to get carry out from Chicago Ramen. I placed an order for two Chicken Ramen with an egg. I showed up about 10 minutes later and they were already packing my order. I've always been impressed with how quickly they get the orders ready, but I guess everything is already premade which makes it easier. I ended up adding a wonton soap for one of my daughters since she just burnt her fish sticks at home and needed a back up. As I was waiting for my food I glanced at the chef and noticed that while he was packing our ramen he was NOT wearing any gloves and added the eggs with his bare hands!! I found it shocking and disturbing... Everything was packed well, and as I got home and got our ramen and wonton soup ready for dinner, I realized that instead of the wonton soup, they ended up giving me shrimp broth without any dumplings. I gave them a call and they apologized and offered a refund. I guess it wasn't meant for my daughter to have dinner that night... My husband and I did enjoy our chicken ramen...but I skipped my egg. We both woke up this morning super swollen and realized there was a ton of salt in the food. This Chicago Ramen is a small restaurant, so far, we have not dined in, we would rather eat in the comfort of our own home. However, it has been our go-to place for ramen takeout for some time now, this review is focused on their takeout ramen. After about two years' time, we have narrowed our preferences to the Red Miso Ramen with Egg and the White Miso Ramen with Egg. Both ramen comes with a big piece of Cha-Shu (pork), bamboo shoot, and green onion. The Cha-Shu is very tender and flavorful, and the egg cooked just right. The ramen noodles are bouncy with the right texture. When it comes to broth, the White Miso Ramen is definitely a winner over the Red Miso. I found the broth of the Red Miso a little too thick and there is a taste that makes it less pleasant than the other. There is ground pork in the broth of the White Miso, which adds flavor and complexity to the texture. Portions used to be very big, and I used to have leftovers. However, recently portions have shrunk and I could finish the entire bowl of White Miso Ramen with Egg in one meal with no problems. It would not be enough to feed someone with a bigger appetite than me. They had made a couple of mistakes in our takeout orders a year ago. Since then, they have been accurate with the orders and timing has also improved. I am pleased to have Chicago Ramen in our neighbor town, and a bowl of tasty ramen is so close by. Chicago Ramen is our go to for Ramen. Authentic, flavorful, decent portions and comparable prices. The Beef Curry Ramen is one of my favorites for a food-for-comfort-kind-of-day. It has a thick, gravy like texture with a kick of spiciness. The egg is always perfectly cooked with the yolk slightly translucent. The Japanese calamari was a bit too salty for my liking. The Karage was good-- but because we ordered for delivery, by the time we ate it, it was still hot but it lost its crispiness. I think Karage is always best enjoyed right away straight out of the fryer. Although it ended up being a bit soggy, I still thought it was tasty. The chicken were solid thick pieces that could be dipped in the dipping sauce. This meal is great when consumed right away. I feel like it doesn't seem to keep well as leftovers. Reheating is a bit tricky to prevent meat from drying out through the process. But, I will say, it seems like reheating leftovers in a pot on the stove, as opposed to the microwave, gives optimal results! read more

I'm typically not a ramen person, so I wasn't particularly interested in going to Chicago Ramen until I learned they also offered rice bowls and a variety of appetizers bordering on dim sum. The interior is bright and clean with popular music, and our waitress was very friendly. Our rice bowls actually came out before our appetizers, most likely because they were easier to prepare. If you order edamame, you have the option of either salted or garlic. Everything was delicious. A couple of FYI's: - The gyoza and other dim sum types of appetizers will be fried; I don't believe they have the ability to steam them. - I ordered a peach oolong tea, assuming it was a hot tea. It was a canned, sweetened iced drink. But I had not opened it, and the waitress was nice enough to let me switch to a hot matcha tea. - They had 2 rest rooms, but one appeared to be permanently locked. read more

Another day, another ramen spot to review Ive been to Chicago Ramen on Des Plaines before, so I was pleasantly surprised when I learned they opened a location by my job. It appears they are franchising. This location is much larger, with lots of seating options. I came here for lunch and was seated promptly, decided to eat at the bar. I ordered the lunch special tsukemen. The lunch special comes with an appetizer and your choice if tsukemen or ramen. Its $2 extra for spicy paste. I got the tuskemen with chicken karaage appetizer. The karaage was real good, came out super fresh snd steaming hot. It was juicy and tender. The breading was real good, but maybe under seasoned. The tsukemen was really good. I actually prefer this location when compared to the des plaines because the pork chashu was done better. It was more fatty, tender and delicious. The des plains is more dried out I feel like. I will be back for lunch here again and next time I think I'll stock to ramen. Im always disappointed becuase theres s lot of tsukemen broth left over (tsukemen beoth is more rich than ramen so you cannot drink it). I could ask for some soup wari to dilute it but i was out of noodles already. I think the ramen is more filling for the price. There are Chicago Ramen outposts throughout Chicagoland although this was my first visit to Chicago Ramen Wheeling. This is located by the Westin North Shore and Coopers Hawk in Milwaukee. It's fairly smallish inside although there are plenty of counter seats that were empty when we came for lunch. We got seated in the last booth in the restaurant. I like the many different broth options -- red miso, white miso -- Tsukemen, curry... I ordered the vegetable ramen and my companion ordered the white miso ramen. We also ordered the Japanese calamari, which looked cool, tasted good, but was unbelievably tough. My vegetable ramen was goodly sized, scalding hot, and a bit bland. I added some of the condiments from the table, stirred vigorously, and it was improved. My companion's ramen was also nicely sized, tasty miso broth, with very tender chashu (they make in house). We both had plenty left to take away. I think next time I would get the spicy vegetable ramen or maybe the tsukemen. It is so disheartening to say but I was not a fan of this bowl of ramen. Chicago ramen is a ramen house - they have all kinds, even curry. I chosen chicken without the egg (because there was a $2 up-charge for one egg). When the bowl was brought to me you could see the congealing of the broth just sitting on top. It reminded me of Campbell's soup when you allow it to sit for too long - forms a thin film like texture over top. That's not good broth - at all. Flee! The chicken was dry and not marinated in the juice so it just sat as its own item. We have ordered carryout from Chicago Ramen a number of times, and it has been a hit-or-miss, both in terms of the food itself and the carryout experience. We always get their White or Red Miso Ramen with egg. While they present a commendable attempt at authentic Japanese Ramen, it does not fully stand out in the competitive ramen landscape within its price range. The broth, while rich and creamy, is one-dimensional. In contrast, similarly priced ramen from competitors in the area often offer broths with layered flavors - balancing saltiness and sweetness more effectively. The noodles were well-prepared with a satisfying chew, but they were from the mass-produced "noodle cakes" that lacked the distinctive springiness found in higher-caliber ramen. For most of the times, the carryout orders were completed without any problem and done in about half an hour. On one Friday evening, however, it took much longer. I had to wait at the restaurant for an additional 20 or 25 minutes to bring the order home. In another occasion, they only packed 2 orders of ramen while we ordered for 3, and the egg was missing in one of them. I only discovered it when I arrived home. When I called the restaurant, they quickly corrected the error but I had to make one more trip to bring the missing order home. I had a good experience having lunch here. They have very large food portions. I recommend their tsukemen (dipping noodles) and the beef curry ramen. I really enjoyed their noodles. They are flatter, almost like egg noodle, consistency. It was unique to have with ramen, and I felt like they paired very well with the dishes we ordered. Service was satisfactory. My friend and I stopped here for a Friday afternoon lunch. It was the first visit for both of us. We both attempted to order chicken ramen bowls, and were told that the restaurant was out of chicken. That was disappointing, but we pivoted and ordered vegetable ramen instead. I got a regular bowl (the other option is spicy, which our server said is considerably spicy), and it was full of flavor. The serving was large, and I took leftovers home. I didn't think the ramen was overly salty while I ate it, but when I was done, I was parched. Other than being out of chicken, the biggest downside was that there was no air conditioning when we were there. No one acknowledged or explained this to us, and they had a large, noisy fan blowing toward the tables. The fan was blowing directly on me while I ate, which wasn't the best experience, but it helped circulate the hot, sticky air. Overall, I enjoyed trying a new place. I have been to Chicago Ramen at the Des Plaines location multiple multiple times and this is my first visit to the Wheeling location. Came here on a weekend and they do not take reservations and it is located right in front of the Westin hotel with a bunch of other strip mall located restaurants and shops. Parking is a high commodity here so good luck finding some without having to walk too far. Upon coming in here on a warm day, the biggest concern I had was that it definitely did not feel like the air-conditioning was on, and after having heat outside and then ordering a hot Ramen inside with an open kitchen, which is exuding heat we were literally sitting in here the entire time sweating . Food quality and menu is very consistent with the Des Plaines location, so please don't expect any surprises which is great for those who expect the consistency and the same type of experience. Therefore, I already knew I was going to order and it was very easy. Went here because it was cold out. But I should have just gotten fast food! Services was horrible. We asked for white ramen and they were out. I asked for ice tea they were out. My spouse asked for flavor tea they were out. Later when my ramen arrived it barely had broth in it so I asked for hot water and guess what... they were out! How the heck are you out of hot water! The waitress that was there didn't even seem like she wanted to be there. We had to repeat ourselves. The table next to us never got their drinks and they had to ask more than once. Ambiance was ok. Chicago Ramen was a pleasant surprise to say the least. Great location off the Des Plaines River Trail made it a good stop while biking outdoors. The decor was pleasant and tidy, the staff was helpful and the food was delicious. I enjoyed the Chicken Ramen and the Gyoza (dumplings) very much. What I want to draw your attention to is something that made the entire experience so approachable and that's the supplement they provide to the regular menu which serves as a visual guide for the contents of Ramen dishes, the differences between different preparations and types of noodles and a literal decision tree. Firstly, a shout out to my Yelp buddy Sherwin for the recommendation. This spot does NOT disappoint! We were welcomed as we walked in and I've got to say I love the look of the space. Better to do a few things perfectly than lots of things average. We ordered spicy red miso ramen, white miso ramen with sweet corn, and an order of gyoza. The gyoza came out first, perfectly fried. They were really excellent. Great flavor and the dipping sauce on the side was perfect balance. I'm a gyoza junkie so you can trust me on this! We both loved our ramen. I have never had a miso broth like this before. Its surprisingly creamy. The texture is almost closer to a tonkotsu style broth but you still get that deep miso taste that I love. The heat level on the spicy red miso was just right, it cleared my sinuses without a painful burn. The noodles were done just enough, not soggy or too al dente. Topped with some nice veggies as well as some toppings that sit at every table this is really the pinnacle of ramen. I'm already thinking about my return trip here... I'll probably get the same ramen because I can't imagine any way to improve it, but the takoyaki is calling to me from the menu. At this point, I'm convinced they can do no wrong! Kinda overpriced being that the only protein was the egg and there was no tofu. I am giving 2 stars because the service was upsetting. My cup had a visible greasy stain on the top that looked like lip gloss/balm so I asked for a new cup. However, my server brought back the SAME EXACT CUP. The food was ordinary and the service was extremely slow because only one staff was working who was in charge of cooking and servicing.

After a wonderful experience at Chicago Sushi, I had high expectations for Chicago Ramen and they delivered! This restaurant is just about the right size, not too small but not too big so that you get a nice cozy feel while also being close enough to the open kitchen to be able to watch your food being prepared. Service is prompt and friendly and they serve food relatively quick. I still can't believe the prices are so low for something so good, and the portion sizes are quite generous as well. The red miso ramen totally surprised me with how incredibly flavorful the broth was, even without adding extra garlic or chili oil to it. It was aggressively creamy and not too salty, which provided an excellent base for the slurpy noodles. The cha shu was also served in a large portion and perfectly tender and fatty. The curry ramen was also very good, not too spicy and actually a little on the sweet side. I liked how it was quite aggressive on the spices, but had a nice consistency that tied everything in the dish together nicely. The chicken karaage was nice and crispy, as was the gyoza which both matched nicely with the spicy mayo and came out nice and hot. The takoyaki was full of sauce and a little more crispy than some other locations I've had, with a good balance and flavor to it. Ac was broken on Friday but they had industrial fans out to try to make things better. Got the white miso and red miso ramen with squid. The white miso is a lighter in flavor so I recommend for first timers. Red miso has a more stronger flavor, slightly bitter but not off putting. Would've done a higher rating but the squid was extremely salty, we had one bite each and couldn't eat anymore. The staff said it was the first patch of the day so it might have been a bit over seasoned, they did offer to take it off, which was nice of them. I finally got here and try this place! We went when their A/C was out and it was a very humid day! Despite the heat, the ramen is outstanding! I had their Tsukemen (dipping noodles) with an egg! It came with a delicious dipping sauce and the noodles had 1 piece of char siu and an egg in a separate bowl! The char siu was really tender and tasty! The waiter told me that they were short staff and apologize for the wait. We also had the gyoza and chicken Karaage! Chicago Ramen is located right next to Spears in a small strip of the Westin hotel. We came by for dinner after work this past weekend and we're immediately seated. They are a smaller restaurant with about 30- 40 seats but a good variety of options. From the Tsukemen ramen (the dipping ramen) to their various broth ramen. Once we were seated we had our drink orders taken, their drink were located on a different sign that we grabbed from the table next to us. We started with the bubble tea that was recommended to us as one of the most popular options. I thought it was a bit watered down but I did drink it very slowly, but the flavors overall were great. We started with the gyoza and the karaage. The gyoza was nice and crispy, while the karaage was super moist and juicy with every bite. The sauce on both plates were very similar, kind of like a light spicy Mayo sauce. For my entree, I had the red miso ramen with chashu, egg and corn. I believe I ordered the regular but ended up with it being rather spicy. The egg and the sweet corn helped quite a bit. Over all the bowl was pretty large compared to what it looks like in pictures. I saw there were several different ramen options, and I went with the red miso ramen with egg. The ramen averages about $15 a bowl, but doesn't come with a ton of toppings, and any additional toppings will be extra money. My ramen was absolutely delicious, but not what I was expecting. It had a thicker noodle and thicker broth than any other ramen I've ever had. However, it was still delicious and packed with flavor. I liked the toppings on the table to add some extra flavor and heat. The egg is one of my favorite parts of ramen and mine was slightly over cooked. The dipping ramen was soooooo good. I prefer my noodles to be chewy and this one hits the jackpot. It almost taste like Italian pasta. The pork slice was huge, tender, and flavorful. We splurged on the egg and it was worth every penny. My partner got the white miso which was really flavorful as well. Love the food but not the customer service. We've been here a couple months ago and loved their ramen and appetizers (tuna rice bowl, karaage chicken). My husband who is not usually a ramen fan actually raved about the curry ramen at this place. However, on a recent trip here we were turned away because we arrived one hour before they closed. Now I'm a bit turned off from this place. So the big tip is to call this place before you spend time to drive over. They seem to close arbitrarily ahead of the time listed on site and Google. We were coming back from a road trip and thought wouldn't it be great to have a late night meal at our favorite ramen place but left very disappointed. Walking in they said they had closed and had shut off the kitchen just because they didn't have enough foot traffic or people (as we see a table of customers finishing their food). Thus we had to find another place to eat for our family of 4 late at night. To me, this is just poor business management. If that is the case then please don't list a closing time on your site or with Google. Just list it as TBD and customers can just call in to check on the daily then. I'm being generous to give 3 out of 5 stars because I did like the food here but I believe they have poor business practices. decided to listen to the hype of this place and lowkey regret it. i ordered the spicy red miso ramen with corn and i really did not enjoy the texture of the soup. it's not a soup, it's more like a porridge. it's thick and not really a liquid. i did not expect that and didn't enjoy it. the flavor was good though. i also did not particularly like the noodles either. they're flat and wide. the chasu was SUPER salty as well. maybe i ordered the wrong dish, but this was not very good. read more
