Chichen Itza has become part of the tradition anytime I'm heading to a USC basketball game, it's the perfect pre-game ritual. The food never disappoints, and the atmosphere always feels like you're stepping into something special. Their fish tacos are easily some of the best in LA--perfectly seasoned, tender, and served with just the right amount of crunch and flavor. They're light enough to enjoy before a game but still packed with flavor that makes them memorable. I've tried a good chunk of the menu, and everything has that home-cooked, authentic Yucatán vibe, but the fish tacos always bring me back. The menu came from hands-on experience, and they write a lover-letter to food through their cooking. This is my love-letter to them. Spanning multi-generations, Chef and owner Gilberto Cetina, learned how to cook while working at Chichen Itza and they've truly perfected some of the finest dishes you can find in LA. Cetina's accolades has been recognized as one of the top Latino chefs in the country by GQ and Hispanic Magazine and while Holbox is getting a lot of recognition you must check out Chichen Itza, the "original". The lines were longer and on the day we went it seemed like the entire LAPD workforce in south-central was getting their lunch here. Tikin-Xic: Two 4 oz. center-cut basa filets marinated with lime juice and achiote served on top of rice with a citrus jicama salad on the side. A full hearty meal for under $15, my oldest will normally not like new dishes the first time he tries it but he hungrily jumped in and ate half of the fish and rice himself. He now keeps talking about it and comparing it to all other foods we eat, "this is good, but not as good as that fish". My wife and I loved it and it was one of the finest meals we ever had, not just Mexican/Yucatan. Tacos De Poc Chuc: Marinated slices of pork, black bean puree, lettuce, charred red onions, and chunky fire roasted tomato sauce served on steamy tortillas. There's something vacant about this food stall. No, it's not empty. It is occupied. Employees punch the clock. Cooking elements are hot. Food is served and the card reader is ready for payment. But the presence of the sister stall Holbox, down the aisle, has muddied Chichen Itza's luster. The Holbox menu contains the bounty of the sea. Exotica in the way of live Santa Barbara sea urchin, Baja California chocolate clams, and house smoked kanpachi spangle the menu. The winsome clientele line the bar around display cases of seafood. Just beyond the glitz, a few paces away, unnoticed and dim, sits Chicen Itza. Although it may play Leah to Holbox's Rachel, you want to go to Chichen Itza. You want to order the tacos de cochinita pibil. You want to sink your teeth into the crowned dish of the Yucatan Peninsula. This can be your most immediate connection to ancient Mayan culture. So you place an order for cochinita pibil. Your number is called, you retrieve your tacos... You are disappointed to find the pork so dry, so void of bold flavor. You notice the absence of sour orange, the traditional acidifier in this dish. All things considered, you understand why the owners are doting on the prom queen that is Holbox, but you also wish they would give more care to the food stall that brought them to the dance. read more

I love this place for dinner. Highly recommend the Tikin-xic (pronounced: teeken sheek) which is a white fish served in a delicious tangy adobo sauce. It comes with a side salad but I always ask to substitute it for black beans. Also recommend the pollo asado which is a generous portion of grilled marinated chicken thighs. Have also tried the cochinita pibil which are marinated carnitas. So tender and flavorful. Panuchos are amazing!! As are the plantains. Love the corn tortillas from this place, they're different but in a good way and you can only eat them fresh. Also I loveeee the agua de chaya which is like a spinach agua fresca, it's mild on the sweetness and so refreshing the jamaica is also perfect and light on the sweetness. I didn't realize how many items I've tried on this amazing menu. Service is great, you order at the counter and they give you a number to bring to your table. Highly recommend getting the Tacos de cochinita pibil. Even in these times of unprecedented inflation, two generously-stuffed tacos are only $8.21 after tax. The pork is tender and dripping juice, and you get a mouthful of citrus flavors if you don't let the taco drip too much. They have fun drinks as well, like the soursop to wash down the tacos. To eat, I ordered the bistec a la yucateca, priced around $20. Served with caramelized onions, rice, black bean puree, pico de gallo, fried plantain, and fried potato, the thinly pounded new york strip was the most flavorful piece of meat I've had in a very long time. It was incredibly delicious and memorable. I also loved the black bean puree. Everything was truly outstanding. Located inside the Mercado la Paloma, this isn't an area I visit often. That said, I now have a very good reason too. Food this good and flavorful is hard to come by. I know I've been leaving a lot of 5-star reviews lately, but this one is maybe the most deserving based on the meal itself. If you are in the area, this restaurant is a must! Doesn't seem like they wanted my business at the restaurant. My coworkers were hyping this place up, so I figured I would place an order for pick up. Turns out instead of a Torta de Poc Chuc, I was served tacos. Also, the tacos were cold and the tortilla was hard as a rock. When I order from somewhere that has such a high rating, I expect my food to be as tasty as described by others. Such a disappointment ... don't think I'll head back there any time soon. I have had better tasting food at other places. I just happened to be in the area and wanted a torta, not 2 bland tacos. Oh and the presentation seriously lacked and I didn't get any salsas. The food here is just delicious. We got Cochinita Pibil and Tikin Xic and both are just amazing. But tikin xic is just on another level of delicious. I've always heard great things about this place and took the opportunity to try them out. I ordered the two cochinita pibil tacos. The tacos arrived within 10 minutes of ordering. The meat was so flavorful and juicy. The tortilla also held the juice well and didn't break apart. The addition of the pickled onions gave a nice refreshing taste and crunchy texture. This place is super nice and amazingly good, everything from the panuchos to the lechon really impressed me. Their menu is super traditional and good their portions are filling. They take your order and put it out really quickly it's always so good coming. Cochinita Pibil is the classic, but their Vaporcitos that are small tamales with chicken or meat cocked in a banana leave are great!!! The clear champion of the group is Holbox but Chichen Itzá is also outstanding. The service by all the dynamic and efficient servers is outstanding and they will find you wherever you are sitting. I called to make sure they were vegan friendly and they assured me there is no lard only vegetable oil. I Can confirm because the texture and the taste definitely backs this up. I lvoe that they are wrapped in banana leaves the presentation and flavor are very nice. My husband loved the ceviche. My favorite item was the orange sauce that came with the vaporcito tamale fully next level and my favorite item. I wish I could buy a bottle of that sooo good! One of the most classic dishes of the region is Cochinita Pibil, made of pork in a marinade of annatto seed and citrus juice, wrapped in banana leaf and slow-roasted. The juicy pork had a slightly orange color and a balanced sweet, acidic, and savory flavor, and I got the meat in two tacos topped with pickled onions and a dash of their habanero sauce. What a surprised~ So glad my friends found this place! My friends and I were going to the museum nearby and we decided to go somewhere for lunch. We stumbled union this place and decided to give it a try. Its setup is similar to a small food court with a small parking lot outside or street parking is available. We ordered tacos, tamale and the sandwich. Out of everything we ordered, my favorite was the poc chuc taco and the chicharron taco. The poc chuc's pork shoulder has a nice smoking flavor to it. The meat was juicy, tender and flavorful. Has a nice combination with other ingredients in the taco. As for the chicharron taco, it's crunchy and had a interesting texture to it. If you think these are your typical street taco, think again! I would definitely come back and try other items. read more

I am the biggest fan of this place! I've had it at a catered event and have been here a few times on my own and it never disappoints. I find the prices to be reasonable and fun fact, they're owned by the same people as Holbox. Their stand out dishes are definitely the salbutes and panuchos (both have shredded turkey, which I love and haven't seen anywhere else). The chicken is great too! For Yucatan-styl food, Chichen Itza has a well-earned reputation for being excellent. Friends who haven't been for years absolutely recognize it on their return, and it is still good! Mercado La Paloma has quite a few tasty places inside, which means their tiny parking lot is always busy, but there's street parking if you're willing to walk a block or two, and seating is sufficient that you can usually get a table. And the vibe inside is great, with lots of character yet still a contemporary feel. Ceviche de tostada, plus their cochinita de pibil, are both very tasty. Tikin-xic is excellent too.
