    The counter - June 2019
    Gail R.

We ventured to this location because the one closer to us had less stars (Yelp). Plus, I decided to come here as it had recently opened. I noticed there were several parking spots on the street. Asign nearby said 2 hours - I assumed that meant it was free as there is no meters or parking machines nearby. The part of this location facing the street is somewhat enclosed - they have several outdoor seating where each table has its own umbrella for cover from the sun. Christian, one of the employees, helped us to open up one of the outdoor umbrellas. There are 2 entrances to get in or out of this location - one facing the street and one at the left side (if facing the store). Once inside, you will discover there are only a few tables inside (I think I saw 2 two-seaters, 1 four-seater and 1 six-seater table) and ample space to order your food and wait until it's ready. As I stood at the counter to order, I had my chick-fil-A app out (ready to use), but was informed that I can't use it because it is a college location (it is by William and Mary College). I ordered anyways because we were already there. We mainly dealt with one of their employees, Christian. Some in our party ordered meals while some did not (at the time we ordered, there were not a lot of patrons in this store). We tried the "Strawberry Passion Tea Lemonade" which is Limited and enjoyed by those in our party that drank it. It is only served in the Large size (don't be thrown off if you receive it in a small cup). I also got to try their Strawberry Milkshake (first time having that flavor at one of the locations) and I enjoyed it (they accidentally made a milkshake, so that is how I got it). Their milkshakes are served in the large foam cups here (not clear ones which I am used to). You do only get one size which is at all locations. Food was good (never been to a location yet where I didn't like my food). Service was great.

What is this black/purple spot on this chicken nugget?

Great on campus dining option, but not as tasty as a traditional chick-fil-a franchise.

Nothing wrong with this little grab-and-go carry out shop but at the same time, I wouldn't call it anything ahhhhmazzzzinggggg that would warrant more than just an average 3 star rating. Better than and more options than a hotel lobby self serve "mini mart." They serve self serve coffee (Members, don't forget to ask for your complimentary daily coffee tickets upon check-in!) but this place also has a barista for hot or iced lattes. Decent lattes, thankfully made with espresso shots not watered down or weak & wimpy. On par with what you would get at Starbucks. The latte menu is NOT extensive so don't expect a long latte/coffee drink menu like at Starbucks. I posted a pic of the latte/tea/juice/bfast sando menu with prices so have a look. Staff is SUPER NICE but both times I was there getting a hot latte, there was ONE WORKER each time running cash AND barista-ing. Not many more can fit behind that tiny ordering counter frankly. Thus - if you see any kind of long line, BE PREPARED TO WAIT. Or come back during non-rush hours. (Remember this is a conference center so it is highly likely conference attendees will be lining up to order before the start of the conference day and in between sessions throughout the day!) I read on their website that all their baked goods and pastries as well as sandwiches, salads etc are freshly house made there on prem so that's nice. Prices are not break the bank (for a hotel). My small hot vanilla latte was $7. Like I said - as a hotel lobby grab-and-go so you don't have to walk far or drive to get your latte-fix on, The Cupboard is right-there-convenient and will absolutely do just fine. If you DO feel like going off the property to go to an indie coffee shop, I drove to and tried the relatively new Grit Coffee in Midtown for the first time - pretty good (read my review and see my pics): Or go to the ever-famous Aromas in CW near the William&Mary campus, an OG legend which imo is overhyped but still a good option - parking can be a pain, frankly better to walk there from the hotel (it's prob a 20 min walk to Aromas but you walk straight down beautiful CW - on a nice day, can't beat that.).

Our food was very good, the poutine was honestly one of the best things I had to eat in a long time. Mixed with the fried egg every bite was genuinely a "perfect bite". I ordered a chai old fashioned. I did not really get that much of a Chai flavor, it tasted more cinnamon than anything else. I would not order again. The hostess/server was very attentive and pleasant. One thing to note is that it appears that the cafe does not always have pastries.

Disappointing plus not much in the way of tater tots. They didnt have the doggie menu I saw online which is why I came here but they did make up a beef patty with rice. My dogs ate the beef and played with the rice. And tap water was served which wouldn't have been so bad bit again it was served at room temp which made it taste odd. After agonizing over places to go in a tourist town, we chose Ember for our anniversary dinner…read more The food was amazing, the options were perfect. One part safe bet, two parts interesting options. After reviewing the cocktails, and asking waitstaff for recommendations, I ordered the Liquid Sword. This cocktail was a unique combination of flavors that accentuated and complimented each other to make something more than the sum of its parts. For my meal, I ordered the safe bet: the Prime Ribeye. My wife took the adventurous route (not normal for her) with the Gochujang Bolognese. Everything was amazing. The steak stood on its own, but the compound butter (Black Garlic) took it over the top. The Bolognese had amazing flavor with a little bit of a kick, which she was nervous about, but wanted to try something she couldn't get anywhere else. In a tourist town, there are many mediocre restaurants that survive on one time tourist visits. Ones that would quickly be out of business in any other town. Ember is not one of them. It was obvious to me that the waitstaff had respect for the guests and the guest experience, which is so rare and so refreshing. You could tell they actually genuinely cared. I noticed several small details that may have went unnoticed to some, such as pipelining solutions to possible issues to improve guest experience. Don't sleep on this restaurant. We came into town and didn't realize that most of the "nicer" restaurants close early (8:30p) and that you need a reservation. I'm so glad we looked at other places and found Ember. It was a wonderful experience and we look forward to going back the next time we're in town. Ember, if you are reading this: keep on keeping on. Do not turn into the status quo of tourist trap restaurants. Keep a menu that has approachable items and continue to keep the unique interesting items like you have, while empowering your staff to help the guests to connect with the dishes that they will enjoy.
