I've driven by this place hundreds of times going between Winona and the Twin Cities. I finally stopped in to experience this cafe. It's an old home converted into a restaurant. While I went in for a latte (it wasn't on the menu) I left with a delicious flavored lemonade which was delicious and refreshing. I couldn't resist the homemade peanut butter chocolate cookies either. Street parking was easily available. Staff was friendly. So glad I stopped. Will do it again soon. read more

Such a cute cafe! I loved the ambiance and how friendly the staff were. The gift shop has a nice little selection and it was fun to peruse. Chickadee has a pretty awesome list of breakfast drinks, from all sorts of chais to coffees to more! I ordered the pumpkin spice chai and it came with cute themed sprinkles! The little pumpkin ones were the best! The chai was VERY sweet so I couldn't finish it. For food, I ordered an omelet and my husband got the breakfast meatloaf. I wasn't overly blown away by the omelet - it was a little dry. My husband really enjoyed his meatloaf. It came shaped like a muffin which was really unique! We also ordered a caramel roll to go and it looks super decadent! We found parking easily enough on the street. read more

We went out for breakfast today and ended up at the Chickadee Cottage cafe. We had a super nice waitress who was quite attentive and helpful. The breakfasts were so good, my sister had the basic breakfast of eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast. With fruit and homemade jelly. As she said, when a place does the basic, traditional breakfast well, it is a good place to eat. Which brings me to my quiche. Fortunately for me, the quiche was vegetarian and it was delicious. The hollandaise sauce that was on top was so delicious and there was a lot of veg in teh quiche. Especially loved the asparagus. It was really tasty. I had cottage fries with it. So went on Sunday , not knowing they only had what they called a buffet that they only dished up ?? Food was dried out from being on a warmer to long and the cut the meat sausages in half ?? Really ?? not worth $16.00 And the guy at check out was grumpy , but they are closing in 2 weeks for winter vacation , so hope they reopen in spring with a New cook and better attitude ! My only recommendation would be for them to make it clearer that Sunday is BRUNCH ONLY!!! Which is too bad because many of the travelers would fill up their restaurant like Heidi's Huggamug Cafe. It looks like they have a great menu but was unable to try it on a Sunday because of their very limited and small brunch menu. At Heidi's Huggamug Cafe there was a line waiting to order and all the tables were getting used and people were making use of available outdoor seating on a cool morning. This is a quaint little house-turned-cafe along the Mississippi River. It has a garden out back. There's seating inside and on a patio/porch out front. This place was very full when we were here, and I was the only male. It attracts females, especially in groups. Therefore, don't expect manly-sized portions. You'll still get plenty to eat, you just won't be taking home extras. We ordered the Coconut Curry Shrimp and a Meatloaf Muffin. Both were served very hot and were quite tasty. We enjoyed the ambiance and the charm of the place. They also have a Sunday brunch which sounds pretty good. The food tasted fresh and homemade. # 1100 Charming spot on our way through the 100 miles of junk. We weren't in the mood for BK or any of the other fast food joints and happily stumbled across this place. It was quite busy, but two people assured us they would get to us as soon as possible. We weren't in a hurry, but they addressed us and made sure to get to us. We were seated in a charming little sun room area. Service was great. Food was surprising. I was expecting regular run of the mill diner food, but this menu was creative and had a pretty good variety of things to choose from and kind of a different variety. I ordered the Cubano which was very good, but very greasy on the outside. Perhaps a little carried away with the butter. Chips and fruit came with it as my side. Fruit was a slice of pineapple, an orange slice and single strawberry. J got the Patty Melt which he said was very good and filling. Hosts were great and very friendly. Wifey and I have eaten here twice, once for breakfast and once for lunch. I had the morning meatloaf and eggs breakfast, which was something I had never seen before. The meatloaf was formed in the shape of a muffin, with cheesy potatoes on top. It also came with a buttermilk biscuit, two lightly poached eggs and a slice of fresh pineapple on the side. It was delicious! Wifey had some kind of egg dish with avacados and other assorted veggies. I forget the name now, but it was the special of the day. She loved it! During our lunch visit, I had the Cubano burger. But not being much of a burger guy, I ordered it with just the ham and no beef. I was really hungry after a long morning out on the boat, so this was just the ticket. It was a hearty, tasty Cubano! Wifey had the Baja wrap sans the chicken. She said it was loaded with flavor and was a delicious, healthy lunch. The restaurant is actually an old house, and has a quaint, small town charm about it. The dining area was quiet and intimate, without being stuffy. Service was exemplary, and you don't have to wait long to get your food. Very enjoyable experience every time we've been there. Chickadees is definitely worth a try if you're in the area, or are looking for an interesting new place to drive to. Did I mention that it's right across the street from Lake Pepin? Fantastic food and service! I was driving through town for work and stopped because I was starving. Pleasantly surprised! The food tasted like super good old fashioned food your grandma would make. No one likes leaving a poor review, but much of the breakfast items our table ordered were just horrible. All 6 of us were disappointed with our food. The flapjacks were barely edible even if smothered with syrup, the fruit had an odd chemical taste to it, and the pumpkin coffee cake was indescribably bad to the point that no one at our table thought it was even edible. Judging from the looks on other customers' faces in our dining room, we weren't alone in our assessment. The eggs and bacon were fine, but the quiche tasted dry and reheated. Been driving past this place for many years but finally decided to stop in for brunch, after another restaurant that we attempted to eat at first was completely slammed. We were not aware of the Sunday brunch special but thoroughly enjoyed it! For $15 a person, you start out with enormous cinnamon rolls and fruit, then scrambled eggs, ham, sausage and cheesy potatoes. My party and so just finished eating here (we are literally still sitting in the cafe while writing this) and I have to say it is one of the best breakfasts I've had in a while. I just got a basic sampler of eggs, hash browns, meat, and pancakes and even for something basic it was so yummy. My wife and mother-in-law got the breakfast meatloaf which was good. But, by far the best part of the meal is their homemade biscuits. We got a side of blueberry, cranberry, apple jam mix (waitress says the chef changes the jam up every few days). We were raving about the food. And the service was very friendly and attentive. Our waitress saw we were cold when we first sat down because the AC was on to combat humidity. She brought pillows to cover the vents by our table. During our two week vacation this has to be the favorite of the places we ate. read more

I would say that on the stretch of river between Winona and The Cities, Chickadee Cottage has to be the best place to eat. A great selection of food for all tastes. Gluten Free and Vegan options if required, and there are not many places around that will accommodate that. Food is well prepared and presented, with nice, fresh fruit sides on most. The hash browns are the best around. Portions are more than adequate but not overloaded. I have eaten from possibly around 1/3 of the meu and have not yet found anything that wasn't wonderful and very tasty. They also have fresh daily baked goods, chocolate truffles and a small gift shop. Gets busy but they staff adequately. One of my favourite places. read more

We recently biked to Chickadees and were greeted with friendly and inviting hosts. This is a nice little cottage restaurant that serves a wide variety of foods. We got the quiche, which was delicious and a must have, and also the muffin meatloaf. Theses both were really good and worth the visit to try. Yelp listed the wrong hours. They don't open until 8am. We showed up properly at 7:30am and they were very accommodating. They let us in early because apparently it happens all of the time. Unable to accommodate those with dietary restrictions on a Sunday morning. Limited menu options. Unfortunate. Anyone should be able to make an egg white omelet or make a salad. We came with a large group. I sat and sipped my coffee while everyone else enjoyed their food. I'll remember this. I just finished a 2 mile swim across Lake Pepin for our annual group swim = hungry. I really enjoyed the atmosphere. It's in an old Victorian home. Now for the food. I got the sampler plate. It's absolutely huge! The pancake takes up almost a whole plate! The biscuits are made from scratch and so light and fluffy. My husband had the meatloaf muffin. We weren't sure about what to expect but it was awesome. Not like Mom's meatloaf at all.
