Went to the Coop last night for a big Christmas party. I've never been and didn't know what to expect. HUGE menu. From a Grilled Cheese Sandwich to a full on Lobster dinner....and everything in between. Great waitstaff, good food, good portion size and very good pricing. My table had the New York Steak, Fish and Chips, Rack of Ribs, Halibut Fish, Filet Mignon, Chicken Fajiata's, and the Taco plate. EVERYTHING was so good, and came out hot and fresh. Is there such thing as a dive restaurant? This place looks like it is at least 70 years old, and maybe it is. It has a menu that tries to do everything, including breakfast, Mexican food, dinner specials, specialty tacos, steaks, southern food, pasta, hamburgers, sandwiches, and all kinds of daily specials. The food comes out very fast, and service is amazing in all respects. The staff working here are very professional and very friendly. The decor inside is dark and full of kitsch. There are booths, tables, and bar stools here. Plenty of parking. I had a New York Steak and a salad. The steak was cooked well done although I had asked for medium rare. Whenever we're in the area, we stop in. This is a kitschish staple in Costa Mesa/Old Newport. A Place the locals hang out. The service was great, always right on time. I found my favorite chicken: broasted, so juicy and perfectly prepared. It was accompanied with homemade mashed potatoes and the perfect gravey. I can't wait until next time! read more

Came here one morning for brunch, and it was divine! Why aren't more bars open for breakfast? I'm sure there's a whole host of reasons, but that's besides the point. This is a divey bar that happens to serve some real delicious offerings in the morning. It's got dingy vibes, but like...in a really positive way. The decor is perfect for a nighttime brewski, but it's oddly charming for the morning too! For some reason, chicken and waffles were the way to go for our party. We ordered like 5 of those suckers, honestly, we should have ordered more! They chicken was fried so well, and retained a lot of the moisture despite being cooked really really crisp on the outside. Paired with some hot sauce and maple syrup, it was kind of a no brainer. Surprisingly, I don't normally get a meal like this for breakfast, but I think I had to after reading reviews about this place. The waffle wasn't anything amazing, but it definitely did the job. It was a good tasting carb to pair with the chicken. Can't really have one without the other in this context. Lovely meal that I'd come back for time and time again. It is great that they have gluten free options for people. My husband said it tastes like food I make at home but my chicken tinga taste best and my taco meat for chicken is moist. He said he rather eat home, most likely when they stew or braise the chicken meat, they did NOT allow the meat to rest and absorb the sauces.. But the star of the place was great service and atmosphere for people to get together after work and there was an amazing cucumber aqua fresco so it hits the tastes buds really well when having heavy food. Based on my husband, I think I would like to try it and see if they have other food to review. read more

We have been enjoying the chicken coop since 2006! For almost 20 years we have had the joy of consistently great food and the best waitstaff! Food is delicious, portions are generous and smiles are on all faces! We absolutely love Horacio, Chewy and Victor who have taken care of us since day 1. Chicken coop is also a great place for a large party! I had 40 of my friends there a couple nights ago for my birthday and everyone was blown away by the food and atmosphere. Was interested to try this place seeing the other reviews and lack of social media presence but it totally lived up to the local hype. The restaurant itself it's super chill and casual. Everything was clean inside. Service was also great even though they were quite busy for dinner. As for the food, started with the bread and omg why was it sooo addicting. Loved the jalapeño poppers and the fries were good. The broasted chicken was also good and a hugeee portion. Skin was super crispy. If I could give this place 1 star I would. Mind you I use to go here from time to time a few years ago. Always had great service no complaints. Decided I wanted some of their fried clams I like. I stop by sir at the bar. I see the bar tender make eye contact with me then see a few other people who were there before me so he service them no problem. Then another guy shows up he service him. I'm still not serviced. Then he finally asked have you been help? I shook my head no. He then replies and a very condescending way are you going to talk to me. You need a menu something? Obviously you know I haven't been helped!! Obviously I need a drink or menu or something, he knew all of this just wanted to be rude. I'm going to gather because I'm African American is the only thing that would make me think is I was the only black person there. Everyone else got proper service. I was introduced to this wonderful spot by my fiancee and his family. The Chicken Coop is a special place for them and they have fond memories of coming here with their uncle Javier as kids. Old fashioned American fare served with consistency and quality for years. They're known for a few things they do right and among them are broasted chicken and fresh oysters. Not too many places serve up broasted chicken let alone on the same menu as oysters. The ambience is cozy, warm. In the evening, lighting is dim and makes for a cozy and intimate vibe. Upstairs I am told is a banquet area. There's a bar area as well. I highly recommend Chicken Coop for any occasion. The bar area is a bit noisy but sometimes I find the noise level comforting. I don't see a lot of staff but they make up for that with quick, accurate and kind service. Consistently checking in to make sure you're enjoying your meal. Prices are reasonable as well. My bf took me here for the first time. I had the tamale meal which came with your choice of pork or chicken tamale and sides of Spanish rice and beans. Also had a Mai Tai. It came as a recommended drink. Pork Tamale. Served wet with red sauce. The dish came out hot. Literally... it was a heated plate. Loved that it was served wet. I love a moist masa tamale. Beans. These were refried pinto. Delicious. I love beans and can never cook them right myself. Flavorful and went well with the tamale. We were told about this place from a couple of friends that are locals. we went in to try their breakfast and were surprised how little the inside was but there was a lot of seating we got a bloody Mary and ordered breakfast, and the food came out fairly quickly the food comes out on a big plate The food was really hot and we would be back for sure not to mention how good the bloody Mary's were check this little dive bar out if you're looking for a good breakfast the service here was right on and made sure we had everything and checked on us if we wanted more drinks. Because of the name we went in looking for fried chicken dinner. NOPE. The menu is a typical truck stop diner menu with the decor of a truck stop. I ordered a hamburger patty, biscuits and gravy, and country potatoes. I asked the server to hold the eggs because im allergic. The server decided because I asked for no egg I shouldn't have the gravy and brought me a dry biscuit and my potatoes covered in cheese. The potatoes ended up hard and stuck to the cheese like glue. I asked for a side of gravy and got about two tables spoons in a plastic cup. This was a huge fail! How assuming of a server to change my order. This place is old school and reminds me of my childhood. My parents used to go to the original Zubies all the time. The food was good and fresh. Maybe a little too much cheese on a couple things, but like I said it is old school. Drinks were good and portions were giant. Service was fast and friendly.
