This became our third Nick's Store and I gotta say, it's probably my favorite! Our Patio table was perfect during our sunny Wednesday afternoon visit and the bar area looks really nice. Inside, some of the seating in the back looks a little dark, but it's probably comfortable. We visit Nick's on Lake in Pasadena and they have flatbread that we don't see at Nick's on 2nd in Long Beach. This Newport Beach location has Sushi Rolls, so we tried a couple and they were delicious. Great shared item for 2-4 people, and maybe even a meal for some. They had a Corn Chowder that was absolutely delicious! We also had the Deviled Eggs and were split... I loved them but my wife was not at all happy because they were mustard forward. So I got 3 of the 4! Service, from Bria, was exceptional. She was super lovely to acknowledge my birthday and I had a super tasty chocolate cake. It was rich, moist! I probably shouldn't have finished it, but it was TOO good! 100% recommend this location and will try to return when we are in the area. read more

Came here last night and had a phenomenal time. The service was great, the host was kind and asked us about our days. Our waitress checked on us consistently and made sure we were happy and never needed refills. I wish I had gotten her name because she was great! Everyone there was kind and helpful! The food was amazing. The Chilean Sea Bass here is my favorite!! I dream of their whipped potatoes. Also, by far the best place to get butter cake. It was soooo good. The food, service, and overall atmosphere are consistently excellent, and I always have a great experience here. My 4.5 yr old son and I enjoy going out to dinner but I'm occasionally stuck with where we can go that isn't a place we eat all the time. I called up Nick's to find out if they had anything for kids and they have an unpublished kids' menu. The choices we were offered for the kids menu included: grilled chicken, chicken fingers, salmon, mini ribs, mini steak, buttered noodles and a grilled cheese sandwich. All options included carrots and French fries. In addition to the kids meal, my son and I shared the asparagus fries. He loved them. I loved them. They were very tasty with the buttermilk ranch. I also ordered the Chilean sea bass which came with a salty spinach salad with almond slivers, mashed potatoes and a little bit of burre blanc sauce, although it was thin and could use more. Overall, it was a tasty meal and service was good. I taught the hosts why you don't seat a 4 yr old in a high table (fall risk) so we were seated immediately at a normal table. Food is good though some classic favorites seem to have been reworked. Service was efficient but impersonal (fine for a Saturday). They have an enclosed patio but don't be deceived, they are not dog friendly. I was allowed to sit innocuously off to the side with my service dog, but they wouldn't even give him a bowl for water. Surely this can be handled more delicately in the future if someone is having $100 lunch. I'll stick to the original location. read more

We had a girls night here - we don't get together often but when we do we try to pick out fun places. Nick's was absolutely amazing. The drinks were wonderful. It's a lively atmosphere, but still quiet enough to talk. We got the Coco Rita, Hugo Spritz and an Old Fashioned. For dinner crispy rice with spicy tuna appetizers (a must) and the prime dip and salmon (perfectly cooked) and a salad. Everything was delicious. A shared butter cake for dessert (another must). The unexpected highlight about our evening was our server Kirby - she was the best waitress we've ever had (not exaggerating). She was personal and funny and kept us laughing the whole night. Brutal parking - they don't validate valet - get there early or look for street parking not too far away. Or pay the valet fee. Huge covered patio. I got the blackened fish sandwich. Great variety across the entire meal. We started with the zucchini fries, regular fries, and spicy tuna crispy rice. The fries were perfectly crisp and the crispy rice had a great mix of textures. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at Nick's last week. We started with Stephanie who was covering for a server on break. Then our server came and introduced herself. I can't remember her name but it started with a C I think. They were both great servers and gave amazing recommendations! All the food was delicious, but you HAVE to try their French Onion Soup. The vibe was very good too. Busy enough to have all tables occupied, but not too packed to where you can't walk in and have to reserve in advance. We came late on a Saturday though. We live closer to Pasadena and will have to check out that location next. But if we're ever in Newport again, we'll be back! read more

My wife and I have been going to Nick's it seems like for decades! We went to the Newport location twice in seven days. Our first visit to Nick's y ars ago, my wife and I said we didn't know what was better, the food or the service. Well the Newport location changed that. Our first visit this week was for our 41st anniversary!! We used to get a congregations card from the staff. That seems to have gone by the wayside. Both times we went the servers were great at first then ghosted us basically till the check came . Then they turned on the charm. We used to get hot towels ( Covid must ha nixed that). Amazing vibes, food, and service! They have valet parking, but if you're lucky you can find parking in the small lot, or street parking behind the restaurant. French Dip 10/10. Super tender and juicy, and the au jus is chefs kiss. The french fries were a little undercooked but I've been to the Pasadena location and it was not. Must have been an off day but all good. Bread 10/10. Not on the menu but this is what they had when we asked for bread and butter. It was amazing! the inside of the bread is pre-soaked in garlic butter. Bistro Plate 8/10. I love small portions with variety in general so this was perfect. The filet was just ok, but the salad was amazing. The soup of the day was creamy french onion, it was good but it might be an acquired taste that I haven't acquired. I didn't love it as much as I would have liked tomato soup. I was very disappointed with our experience at Nick's in Newport Beach. We arrived looking forward to dinner, but the staff wouldn't seat us and were extremely rude throughout the interaction. It was an unfriendly and unwelcoming experience that left a very poor impression. What's especially disappointing is that we regularly visit Nick's in San Clemente and always have a fantastic experience there. The service is consistently warm, professional, and makes us want to come back. Unfortunately, the Newport Beach location was the complete opposite. Based on this experience, I won't be returning to Nick's in Newport Beach. I hope management addresses the customer service issues, because the difference between this location and San Clemente is night and day. read more

Nick's is a great spot for date night! The ambiance and atmosphere is superb. Located in the same plaza as Kit coffee, Juliette's cafe and salt & straw, so there's plenty of parking. Service is excellent! We started with a round of drinks and the manager brought over asparagus fries which were delicious 10/10! For food my husband ordered the fried chicken which came highly recommended and he was not disappointed. It comes with mashed potatoes and biscuits, a true comfort meal. I order Seabass at almost any restaurant if they have it and the Seabass at Nick's was amazing! It was buttery and cooked to perfection. Comes with mashed potatoes and cooked spinach. The spicy rigatoni is definitely good. Wish it had more parm cheese and had meat, but overall I would get it again. My wife and I really loved this restaurant. Beautiful restaurant with dark woods and moody lighting. Acoustics were loud in the bar area but not too bad in the surrounding dining room. There's also a large covered patio. There's a lot of things in this plaza so parking is random luck but they have valet if you can't find a spot. Mai Tai here is a unique twist with a frothy foam on top infused with Li Hing Mui powder. I really enjoyed their take on it and liked the artistry of the paper thin pineapple slice. My wife and I both got the $28 combo plate that included a petite filet mignon, soup of the day, and salad. Was the perfect portion and was a great deal given the quality. I'm a huge fan of Nick's, I frequent their San Clemente and Laguna Beach locations regularly, so I was excited to try this new spot. The food and menu still have that Hillstone's-style quality I love, with some fresh new options. This location is absolutely gorgeous, with a stunning bar that makes you want to linger. A big plus: they've added some sushi options you won't find at San Clemente or Laguna. I really want to come back to try the rigatoni, I have a feeling (hope) it will be similar to carbones. The servers are friendly and genuinely try to make the experience great, but the timing from the kitchen still needs work. Drinks took far too long to arrive on both of my visits -- once for dinner, once for lunch and the overall service pace just felt off. On one occasion, it took about 20 minutes past our reservation time to be seated, and we ended up with a less-than-ideal table. I chalk this up to growing pains for a new location. The food is as fantastic as ever, so I'll definitely be back to see how they settle in. I have a feeling that once the crew finds their rhythm, this will be another standout Nick's. read more

Had birthday lunch here and it was great! My wife and I have always been to South of Nicks in Laguna. This is our first time and I can say they've mastered just about every dish here. We had a large party and shared family style. Some appetizers to note were: spicy tuna on fried rice, deviled eggs, asparagus fries and shrimp were all delicious and expertly prepared. Between different sandwiches, burgers and the Chicken Piccata and Chilean Sea Bass, everything was prepared at a very high level. Each plate was delicious. I enjoyed the prime rib dip for lunch. One of the best I've had. Service was top notch. The best part, when the bill came I was pleasantly surprised it was much lower than I expected. Usually go to the Laguna location, first time at the Newport location. Ambiance is very nice, cute outdoor seating area. Unfortunately they do not let dogs in strollers which is a shame because we like to usually bring our pup to dinner with us. We ordered Caesar salad, blue crab roll, rigatoni, and the ribeye melt. Caesar salad came out with chunks of lettuce that you have to cut yourself. I wish they would cut up the salad so I did not have to. Sushi was disappointing. It came with minimal crab and big chunks of cucumber and asparagus. For the price, I don't think it is worth getting. Ribeye melt was solid, good flavor and cooked well. The rigatoni is our fave to order. Great flavor, but the pasta was a little softer than I would have preferred. But overall, love the vodka rigatoni. Workers were nice and attentive. I've always been a fan of Nick's, having dined at their Laguna Beach and Pasadena locations many times over the years - so I wanted to try this one in Newport Beach. The patio is spacious but the view isn't as appealing, as you will see apartment buildings and complexes across the street. For starters, we ordered spicy tuna on crispy rice, fried asparagus, and shrimp taquitos. For entrees, we had cioppino and salmon plate. The food here was just as good as the other Nick's locations, with great quality and amazing seasoning and flavors. Cocktail drinks were also just as refreshing and tasty. Unfortunately, the dessert was a miss. They only had 3 options to choose from, and the butter cake with berry compote was just way too sweet. It pretty much just tasted like eating grainy buttery sugar. As for service, unfortunately, we ended up with a waiter who was unfriendly and transactional, not personable and very rushy. It was our first time here at this location and it was pretty busy. Luckily I reserved a table about 4 days prior for the 6:15 pm slot for Friday evening.
