Welcome to Chicken Joe's, with three locations in southern CT and three more between Albany and the northern NYC suburbs. The first time I had Chicken Joe's was a few years ago. A whole bunch of us were taking the train from New Haven to NYC, and a buddy jumped on the train down in Greenwich to join us. He was toting a big bag of Chicken Joe nuggets which none of us had ever heard of before, and we were all duly impressed with how awesome they were. Joe sells his nuggets a few different ways- alone by the pound, or in combos with a side and a drink. The combo names are a hoot - Baby Special (1/4 lb nuggets), High School Special (1/2 lb nuggets), Bad Boy Special (3/4 lb nuggets) and Godfather (1 lb nuggets). I bought some nuggets for a trip down to Stamford where half a dozen of us were congregating to watch a football game. I went with three Godfather Specials - one with fries ($12.50), one with onion rings ($14.50), and one with cones ($14.50). What's a cone? I've seen it described as a fried potato gnocchi or a fried mini scoop of mashed potatoes. But my wife was right on the money when she said it tasted like a mini potato knish. The combos also came with a can of soda and a whole slew of dipping sauces. Everyone loved the food, really..... it was great. The nuggets are cut by hand and made on site. No frozen nuggets out of a bag here. The chicken was moist and juicy and the coating was crisp and yummy. Joe sells a lot more than nuggets -salads and wings and pizza, fried chicken and seafood plates, hot and cold grinders and wraps, plus breakfasts. It's quite the cool little place, and the food quality, reasonable pricing and good values gives you an idea why Joe has been around as long as he has. read more

Fantastic food! The fried chicken was to die for. Crispy skin, tender juicy chicken inside. The coating was crunchy, not greasy. Absolutely perfect. We also got a side of the special seasoning to sprinkle on and it was a terrific compliment. I highly recommend getting your next meal at Chicken Joe's! This place is a local favorite that serves up greasy goodness. The big thing here is the "High School Special" in varying sizes-essentially chicken nuggets/strips and fries. But for a small charge (I think $1) you can upgrade to cones which are basically deepfried gnocchi. Crispy in the outside, pillowy-soft on the inside, these things are some special potatoes! The chicken itself was unremarkable and dry however. Basically a watered down version of Garden Catering, these guys copied a fair amount of GC's style (and were in fact sued for it). If you need a grease fix, you could do worse, though. read more

Garden Catering? What's that? Good lord if there was ever a holy chicken nugget it would be found at Chicken Joe's. My first time coming here because I heard it's the "real" garden catering. Just don't mention the name GC to them. I got a New Roc special which is 1/2 lb of nuggets and cones slathered in chili and cheese. The most delicious combo I have ever had. I probably should have ordered the special that was the same price as the New Roc but came with fries. Oh well. Chicken Joe's is still the bomb. 3.5 stars but will bump up to 4 stars rather than down. Always pass this place, but haven't tried it until recently. As their name says, they are a specialty chicken place - but chicken tenders/nuggets, whatever you want to call them. They have some interesting combos options and side options. I had tried the smallest one there, which I think is the high school special, with the cones (deep fried mash potato). As it was the smallest combo, it only came with 4 pieces of nuggets but lots of cones. The cones were really tasty! The chicken was good too, but a tad salty. I do understand it's hard working under pressure but they still could have said Hello to me instead of saying "Next!". I ordered a daily special - the Bushwick Swag with a soda (for 8.50 $ excl. I've been coming here easily for 15 years back when it was part of the Garden Catering franchise. I'm glad they separated because this spot is sooo much better than the other Garden Catering locations in Stamford and Old Greenwich. This spot is tiny and is Joe is the man to see if you're looking for quick comfort food that just might lead to a coronary. Back in middle school I was ordering the "high school special" (1/2lb. of nuggets, fries, can of soda) for $5 (which they still have among a cornucopia of other combos). It comes in a foil lined paper bag in which "seasoning" is poured (think Lawry's seasoning salt) and the bag is shaken. Nothing crazy yet somehow it's magic. Pretty much anything that they batter and fry is good (chicken, mushrooms, zucchini, shrimp, cones, poppers, mozzerella sticks, etc). They also do all of your breakfast stuff and a ton of deli sandwiches. I swear it seems like EVERYONE orders lunch from here whether is landscapers, construction folks, teachers, students, or grandmas. I'm so glad this place is still around and always packed. read more

This particular location for what used to be Garden Catering has been my favorite since I was in elementary school across the street. Now a days, I get two God Father specials which ends up feeding my whole family! Ultimately, you have Chicken and fries in a bag! If you're a potato lover, sub in cones instead of fries and you'll have an even more awesome dinner! If you dont wanna take the risk, get half cones and half fries! The food is always fresh and comes out in the perfect state. Never soggy. Ever. (unless of course you're forced, and i mean forced... to eat this delicious meal an hour or so after you purchase it.) I, too, have noticed that these guys are definitely more fresh than Garden Catering -- as Robert said below, these guys make the food to order. I love chicken joe's!!!!!!! This place is right across from my best friend's home in Cos cob, though I know Chicken Joe's has a couple of other locations in Connecticut, too. They sell a lot of sandwiches, wraps, etc. but the best and most popular are the fried chicken nuggets (REAL chicken, not pink slime) with fries or cones. I usually get the baby (1/4 pound chicken with cones or fries), but most of my friends get the high school special (1/2 pound chicken with cones or fries). We get "The Godfather" (1 pound of chicken with cones or fries) when we want to share with each other. The cones are like a small ball of fried mashed potatoes, and they're DELICIOUS!! I always ask for extra of their "special seasoning" spice to dip the chicken into. It's a little sweet, a little spicy, and tastes a bit like Old Bay with some other spices I can't put my finger on... The entire kitchen can be seen from the front. It is extremely clean and I always see fresh ingredients. The owner and entire staff from cook to cashier is extremely friendly. They truly care about the food and the customer experience. Their breakfast sandwiches are excellent, many options to choose from off the menu or make your own. They also have many great lunch options like their signature High School Special, sandwiches, and wraps just to name a few. No matter the choice, it is always enjoyable and well portioned. WARNING: Long review is about to written. Two stars for great food - but you can get the same stuff at any Freddi Rooster or Garden Catering, with some exceptions. The reason they lose three stars is because of their customer service. I once called asking if I could place an order through the phone, then PICK it up. He spoke perfect english. The joy in his voice died down the moment I asked to place an order over the phone. He rudely stated they did NOT take phone orders, preorders, didn't do catering, none of it. Then I told him that *I* was sorry for inconveniencing him, and must've been mistaken, to which he mumbled "didn't you hear me?" then hung up. What? At this point, I realized he wasn't even listening. I drove to the location instead. Everyone was having a party inside, apparently, and I wasn't invited. It was packed. I placed my order, and some rude greasy man from the back yells up to the LOUDLY PACKED front, "YOU THE GIRLS THAT ORDERING ON PHONES?!?!?!" I stated "Yeah?" to which he rolled his eyes, I proceeded to get plenty of stares from the men up front who heard, and then I received BURNT food about 5 minutes later. If anyone knows this place, food takes a while to prepare because they put love into it. Not this time. Nope. It was burnt, somehow a little raw in the middle of the chicken, and I didn't finish eating it because I was scared he spit into it. Needless to say, the old people that made this place so epic and welcoming, are gone. I'm done with Chicken Joe's. I've loved Chicken Joe's and Garden Catering for years, but the quality of Chicken Joe's ingredients has gone way down. My brother and I each ordered a grilled chicken wrap and the chicken tasted like rubber. I'm saying this and I have been ordering the same wrap from Chicken Joe's/ Garden Catering locations since they first opened (I want to say around 1998?). They probably have had some success deep frying the chicken so you can't taste it. My family has stopped eating here in general because the quality has really been disappointing. The service and everything else here is fine, but I strongly feel that the ingredients are so sub par. Chicken Joe's really used to be great (especially this location which has been open for years), but somewhere along the way during the franchising process, they lost what has made them great in the past: cheap, quality, fast food. A few years ago I went in with my girlfriend of four years, and she paid for our meal. Not only did these guys insult me by making fun of this fact (only men should pay for things apparently), but then the food was horrible to boot. Scratch one, jerks.
