I've been to this location a handful of times now, and it's always spot on. The food is consistently hot and fresh, and the staff behind the counter are professional, friendly, and genuinely helpful. You can tell they actually care about the food they're serving and the experience they're giving their customers. Chicken Shack in general has one of my all-time favorite barbecue sauces, and of course, you can never go wrong with the Shack Potatoes. My new favorite item, though, is the updated recipe for the chicken tenders. I honestly wasn't a big fan of the previous version, but they have absolutely knocked it out of the park with the new recipe! Fast counter service- the food takes a little longer because it's made fresh, but that's ok. Sit and watch the traffic on University and let the world go by for a few minutes. I have a love hate relationship with Chicken Shack, and over the years have had excellent experiences with quality .... From other location. But overall not from Rochester. Here, rather than try to deliver great food, it seems the point is to suck every last penny from the customer. The chicken is almost comically small pieces, and rest assured a 12 piece "bucket" is going to be majority wings (dry and so small that there's barely any meat on them) and a rib portion that used to be a full rack seems that they are now counting bones. As for quality, the potatoes are periodically incredible and just as often good or just okay. The coleslaw is awesome and the bbq sauce is incredible. But the overall consistency isn't here and the value is lacking. So, every once in a while, I crave it and go back because its close. And sometimes its a terrible value but delicious. And just as many times its a terrible value and mediocre. read more

Lived in the area for almost 5 years and never thought to get Chicken Shack. We have been missing out for 5 years! We ordered online which was easy to do. Their menu is vast - chicken is of course the main event but they have lots of options. There is also seafood, ribs, and sandwiches. Tons of sides as well. We opted for delivery which was free - not sure if it was special deal. Our food came quickly and was impressed with how hot the food still was. We ordered the chicken bite dinner - basically chicken nuggets, a side, and roll. We also got a side of the potatoes. Wow! So yummy - the chicken had a great breading on it and the chicken cooked well - was not dry. I got onion rings and they were excellent - almost on the sweeter side with the batter. The potatoes are a classic - oily and soft. The roll was pretty basic though - my only negative. But everything overall was delicious. They had homemade ranch as well which was the dunk to my chicken. I had leftovers the next day for lunch - good portion size. We will be back and won't wait another 5 years to order! read more

Not sure what is going on here with this location. Nearly all of the meals I've had over the years at different locations have been awesome. The two times that we've ordered from here have been lacking. Our chicken was over-cooked and really salty. The potatoes were over-cooked and dry as heck. We enjoyed the ribs, but overall the meal wasn't great. Much preferred our experience at North Shack (further drive but better food). I'm not sure if it was just this location, or if they are struggling to get capable help or something else. Either way, there are better places for broasted chicken. read more

I've been to various Chicken Shacks over the years and the food has always been good. I've even been to this particular location a few times in the past 15 years and haven't been disappointed. My most recently visit was definitely the best, however. I picked some up for my grandfather's birthday last week (he loves fried chicken) and I was really impressed with the quality. Like the commercials say, it was "crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside". Out of the entire 12 piece bucket, not a single piece was even mildly dry underneath the golden batter. It far exceeded my expectations of Chicken Shack from previous visits! My grandfather was impressed as well, which is important because he is the fried chicken aficionado. We also got a large order of the shack potatoes, which are always great. If you haven't tried these, then you are missing out; I'm not sure what they cook them in (some combination of butter, thyme and salt maybe?), but they are delicious! The staff was courteous on arrival. Due to COVID, they have parking lanes with a number, and you call the store with your spot number upon arrival so they can walk it out to your car. I placed a carry out order for 5:45pm, arrived at 5:44, and they promptly walked it out to the car after calling. The gentleman who bought it to me was very friendly (and wearing a mask for those wondering). After this recent experience, I will be ordering a lot more of Chicken Shack. The price is about the same as KFC, but the quality is isn't even a comparison; this blows KFC out of the water. I'm hoping my next order will be as good as my last! read more

They have been short staffed for a while now but that hasn't stopped them from making quality food and being extremely kind every time I pick up my food. You can order online and it'll be ready when you walk in which is great for anyone that is on a tight schedule. They also cater which is an awesome option for parties or work events. It's been a good long while since I've came here or ordered anything from here and I wonder if the quality of the food was the reason why. I ordered through Door Dash and received my order earlier than projected. I ordered 2 piece white meat chicken w/ potatoes and 1 pork chop with corn. First and foremost the pork chop is suppose to come with apple sauce and this did not. The chicken breast tasted old and not cooked hard enough, the pork chop tasted old as well or refried. We love the broasted potatoes (which is why we ordered 2) and it was a disappointment not to get the 2nd order- especially with what you have to pay for the meals! I don't normally write negative reviews but Chicken Shack needs to revise their curbside delivery method. On two recent occasions orders were placed, and paid for over the phone. We were instructed to call the restaurant when we arrived and food would be brought to us. First call to the restaurant was 20 minutes after order was placed. Within the next 10 minutes Staff tried to give us two different orders that were not ours, and staff kept approaching the car and asking our name for the order. Then nothing. After 50 minutes we called the restaurant again to inquire about the order. The food was delivered within one minute of that call. Problem was the food was cold! Chicken Shack, please tighten up the process or you will loose a loyal 30 year customer. read more

I hadn't been to Chicken Shack in a few years, so I decided it was due time for another visit - especially with my dad in town as he loves fried chicken. We decided to go to this location as it was the closest to my house. First and foremost, if you are going here in December (at dinner time), be prepared for traffic back-ups due to the annual downtown Christmas light show that occurs daily that will slow your commute down considerably. When we arrived, we got one of the last parking spots available (due to the downtown festivities). There were a couple people in line ahead of us to order at the counter. When we ordered, it seemed difficult communicating with the guy behind the counter. We would read off of the menu what we wanted and he would call it something else and ask for us to confirm or he couldn't hear us due to how loud it was in the kitchen behind him. The staff seemed in complete disarray as if they were half of a staff short from being able to complete their daily tasks. We ordered and sat for about 20 minutes until our meals were delivered to our table. The food was super hot. Almost too hot. I would highly suggest getting Chicken Shack to go to give it time to cool down on the commute back to your home. Secondly, I recommend this, so you can use your own metal silverware instead of the plastic silverware that ends up breaking inside your food or mouth when attempting to eat the chicken. The food, overall, was good. I wish you were given more dipping sauce as I went through mine after two tenders (of the five that I ordered). My dad kept remarking that it was good, but it was just super hot. The potatoes, no matter the location, are always on point and are my favorite potatoes ever! During this time, the manager (I think) started going table by table to ask us what vehicle we drove (several times) so he could start towing non-customers out of the lot. Again, complete chaos. I've driven by here a few times, and thought I would give this place a shot for a quick dinner last night. I didn't want anything fancy, so I came here. I have to say, this place isn't all that bad, but I wasn't overly impressed. For starters, the wait wasn't to bad, and the place was consistently busy with carry out orders and dine in people as well. I chose to dine in as I had a few other things on my agenda to do last night. The service was fine, and they have daily lunch specials that end at 4PM. Ordered the 3 piece chicken tenders with a side of the potatoes and a drink. After waiting about 15 minutes, my food finally came out, and it was HOT! I went with the BBQ sauce and ranch as side dips, as I like to rotate between both when eating chicken fingers. The BBQ sauce was not very good, and I found it to be bland and flavorless. The ranch was AWESOME! I even dipped my potatoes in it as well! The potatoes were awesome, and were covered in some kind of butter sauce that made them even more awesome. The chicken was okay, but nothing to write home about. I would eat it again, but didn't find it overly impressive. Not much to say other than, hey, it's good, man. I tend to go for the tender bites, and they never let me down. For $7 you can get 6-8 of them (so says the receipt ... we got 8 each), a side, a sauce, and a roll. No complaints from me, it's a decent amount of food for the price. The sweet heat sauce that's fairly new isn't all that great. I'm not sure what it tastes like, but it's not hot, and it's not very sweet either. It should probably just be called ... nondescript flavor red color sauce. For sides, my girlfriend went with the broasted potatoes, and I got the onion rings. The broasted potatoes are always good, and you also get a nice portion of them for a side. The onion rings were fine and good, but I've had better, and the onion kept coming out after the first bite. Aw, damn it all. I like Chicken Shack. The food sometimes takes awhile to get because it's cooked to order, but I don't mind much. My knocks on this Chicken Shack are pretty small... first, there's no obvious sign in front of the building if you're heading east towards it. Second, the decor is super dated, but so is the Chicken Shack closer to my house. Actually, the one closer to my house is kind of literally falling apart, but I digress. The quality here has dropped like a hammer. Last 3 times have been awful. I waited to write this review to see if it was isolated cases, but it's gotten progressively worse. On our last visit the chicken smelled and tasted off. As in decomposed off. Couldn't finish the meal and just left. The staff seems to be new every couple of months and their demeanor plus results just shows that they don't care and the location has a never ending cycle of bad turnover and terrible morale. My family takes out from here at least twice a month and we always get the tender bites box and sides of fries and potatoes. The tender bites are always perfectly cooked and fried to just the right amount, and the fries are very long and tastefully salted. But again, these dishes are hard to mess up. On the flip side, their fish and chicken drumsticks are pretty dry, so I wouldn't recommend those. This place has a strong local energy and it's hard to imagine downtown Rochester without it. Chicken sandwich was marginal at best. Bland taste, decent texture. Fries were oil soaked and not at all appetizing.

Was told the food would be ready in 10-15 minutes. Over a half over later, with many other customers taken after us receiving their food, ours was ready. The food is excellent but the last TWO TIMES, including today 2/8/21 my order have been short items because they bring it out to your car already packed and know that MOST people will not check until they get home. Then it's to late. For example I ordered the 8 piece wing ding dinner for my wife and when we got home and open the meal it ONLY contained 6 wing dings. Purchased a 16 chicken bucket, you get right if you said it was short TWO pieces of chicken. COME CHICKEN SHACK YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO GIVE US WHAT WE PAY FOR. I don't normally review a place based off a single encounter, but I tried the fish for Lent last Friday and was sorely disappointed. Felt like I was eating a rice cake. Zero flavor and the Heinz tartar sauce did not help nor did the hot and sassy sauce which tasted weird, kinda sweet and watery. Onion rings were even less exciting. Broasted potatoes and cole slaw were decent, just like North Shack. The service was good. Though it was clear the employees were not serious about their jobs (not too much anyway, can't really blame them) they helped us with our allergy needs. Everyone warned me not to try the place but I have to see some things for myself. There's far better eateries in town so I doubt I'll give this place a second chance. Really good place to get a nice greasy, delicious fried chicken meal. Have been here a few times, its one of those places that you just kinda get a craving for. The broasted potatoes are really really good, and swimming in butter, and the chicken is always cooked nicely. They have a few specials, (tub of dark meat) etc, that I think are fairly priced, and you can pick up a 2 liter if that is your thing. Me and my girlfriend are a big fan of chicken shack, its always hot and fresh, and the employees are really nice. We live close, so we always get it fresh and hot. If you are looking for a healthy meal, look elsewhere. BUT, if you want some damn good crispy fried chicken, hit up chicken shack! read more
