We have been enjoying food from RO Chicken Shack since it opened in 1950's. Today we were very disappointed in the dark meat chicken, The thighs had 2 small bites of meat and giant bones like I have never seen and I have been cooking for over 50 years. The small potatoes were not enough for 3 people and before it would feed 5 or 6. We still love the coleslaw and potatoes but please upgrade your chicken, it is what you are known for! read more

Cod sticks were good although they only come with a small Kraft tarter sauce packet. Tender bites were also good with a lot of batter on them. Not impressed by the expensive chicken breast and the onion rings were obviously from frozen and nothing special. Overall, not worth the price. read more

While my husband grew up in Madison Heights, MI, I did not. I grew up in Cincinnati, OH and so had never heard of this place. While visiting his family, we decided to get this for dinner tonight, as a carry out. We ordered an assortment of fried chicken, a slab of ribs, chicken tenders, fries and cole slaw. OH. MY. GOSH. I know...I know....this place is called the CHICKEN shack. But the ribs. My God, the ribs. They were AMAZING!!!! They literally fell off the bone, they were melt in your mouth tender, and the barbecue sauce was absolutely delicious! I've only had ribs this good one other place (the fancy Mariott Marquis in Atlanta, GA) but we paid significantly more for them AND they're 10 hours+ away. That's not to say the chicken wasn't absolutely delicious as well. The ribs just knocked me out of my chair. The tenders had a very light, crispy batter to them, and the chicken breasts (on the bone) were crispy and delicious as well. Overall, I loved it - seemed a bit pricey - $56 for what we got, but I'll definitely still go next time we're in town. read more

Other customers should be made aware of sub par service... We tried to order online for the Royal Oak store via a pickup. Couldn't subtract the mayo. It didn't have a "notes" line so I called the Royal Oak store to just order ahead. The gal "Erica" told me just go back online, order the sandwich's and call back to tell her not to put mayo on them. I did exactly that. The only problem is that some rude "A-hole" answered the phone (not Erica)...I tried to explain that I ordered online but he was a condescending ""D-bag". Never asked me what I ordered, who I was or what the order number was. I can't help it his life sucks, but you should never take your life's frustrations out on someone you never met. Do yourself a favor and don't eat or order from here. Unless you like being talked down to....Is it chicken shack or chicken #%'?.....I'm not sure. EVEN after calling to make sure it didn't have mayo WE CHECKED IT WHEN WE PICKED IT UP AND THEY STILL PUT MAYO ON IT!!!!! Wow...$21.00 later for two sandwiches it was marginal at best. DO NOT EAT HERE. I came here Monday night and my boyfriend was served undercooked chicken bites and got violently ill all night. When I called to speak to the manager they didn't care at all and didn't seem sorry that it even occurred. Disgusting food and even more disgusting management. This used to be my one and only chicken place. My wife and I would go here at least two times a month for the Chicken tender bite dinners, it is on the expensive side, but it was worth it. But about 6 months ago they changed the breading on the chicken, it used to be crunchy and delicious but now it's like a thick heavy breading that's more like chicken nuggets from a fast food place, the crunchy is gone and replaced with soggy heavy bread with no taste. Also they keep raising the prices and now two dinners is over $25 bucks, not worth it any more, I will take my money to Texas Roadhouse instead. read more

The Royal Oak Chicken Shack on East 11 Mile. The last two pick-ups were in-correct. The first I paid for an extra sauce and did not receive. The second on 3/3/21, I ordered and paid for chicken wings and got those little wing pieces. When I called the manager said I had to return the order, that was their policy. She could not take the word of the customer, yet she was not going to pay for my gas for making the round trip back to the restaurant. I asked to speak to the owner she said he was not there and would not give out the name of the owner. My conclusion is they charge for products they don't deliver on. They lost a long-term customer. First experience at Chicken Shack left me with mixed feelings about it.They missed giving two items overall and I had to drive back to get them.They were apologetic and gave me a $5 gift card for the trouble. The chicken was juicy on the inside and very crisp outside. The taste of the coating is kinda bland though but still enjoyable. The ribs were over cooked and very dry.I like a bit of crisp caramelized ends but the meat should be fall off the bone tender.Disappointed with the ribs.I most impressed with the sides.Fries had a unique taste with a snap I expect from shoe string style fries. The fried mushrooms were outstanding.Standout coating that stayed crunchy and did not retain grease. I would come back again for the mushrooms alone. Please remember, I star dining for the category it's in. Chicken shack is a faster food style option that competes with KFC across the street and .5 miles East. I have had both and I must say the Chickenshack produces better chicken tenders and other items. The food quality is obviously better and purchased from a battery supplier. I realize that it's not an upscale restaurant; and the ambience is not fantastic, But for a chicken joint, that's a pretty darn juicy chicken. read more

Wednesday June 17 I was at Beaumont Royal Oak, just had a baby girl! Thursday's June 18 we decided to order dinner from Chicken Shack (I looove their fish) I got the dinner, and ate 3 pieces. I skipped the potatoes because my husbands chicken meal didn't come with potatoes. Around 10pm I was violently ill. For HOURS. I'll spare all the details but I 100% believe it's from my dinner. After Major abdominal surgery to have my daughter I don't think we'll be eating here again. Granted I've never had an issue from our regular location (Clarkston) we won't be back to Royal Oak. The chicken was great. The potatoes and onion rings were awesome, too. I called at 330 pm to order takeout, but their phones weren't working. I went there in person instead and ordered my food. When I was there, I let them know the phones weren't working. I called again at 8:45 to check on this issue and the phones still aren't working, at least on my phone. I ensured that the issue was not totally on my end by calling other people successfully with my phone. I called them with my wife's phone and it would ring through after about 30 seconds of silence after dialing. My phone would just give a busy signal 30 seconds after dialing. I felt compelled to write this review because if this were my business, I'd want to know about this weird issue that could really impact sales. read more

Oven broasted potatoes...remember that --its the way you want to order your side along with your main broasted chicken or ribs. The potatoes are fried in chunks, then oven roasted, then drizzled with butter by a brush. Decent prices especially if you order a combo of meats. The rib sauce is so good you will want to take extra to go. Definitely a carry out spot. Really with this restaurant I can't decide if they do a better broasted chicken or rib. Chicken Shack Coleslaw...ohh how I miss you? I don't live close to the Shack these days but still dream about the best chicken dinners I had as a kid. And even though I'm not that old, things don't change. Chicken Shack is still the best place for Chicken, ribs, coleslaw, and such TO GO. Delivery chicken and ribs is a great option to the usual pizza at your typical gathering. Eating In is hit or miss depending on how busy they are. The food is always great. I got an 8-piece shack pack and an 8-bone order of ribs with some sides as I had some guests over. We all got sick within 3-4 hours of having the food. I can only speak about the Chicken Shacks on 11 Mile in Royal Oak and on Northwestern Highway. Our absolute favorite (and only) places for fried chicken. Chicken is wonderful, as is the cole slaw. The broasted potatoes can be a greasy -- if you're eating at home, get them out of the carry out container ASAP. read more

After reading some of the glowing reviews for a bunch of mediocre restaurants in this Godforsaken restaurant city, I noticed this restaurant rated only three stars. When I used to dine daily with my aging father, who has since passed away, this was one of our regular spots. I thought the food was fabulous. From the chicken, ribs and shrimp, to the broasted potatoes and cole slaw, everything was excellent and consistant. It's not a great place for date night, but for carrying out, bringing the kids, and even a quick lunch, this place cannot be beat !!! read more

I had the worse service this evening at the 11 mile R.O. location, after calling in a $30 order, I found 15 minutes later that they gave my order away..or so "they thought". No apologies, nothing. I would have to wait another 15 minutes ("or so" she said) for another order to be prepared. The whole time the cooks are laughing, talking and the girl dealing with me wasn't too with it either, she seemed pretty amused by the whole situation. "Hannah" the manager, said they would deliver my order to me at my home but at that point I didn't trust the cooks or the staff. Not going back. The food at this location was horrible. I have went to many chicken shack locations but this one was the WORST. I will NEVER be back. I ordered chicken and potatoes for my family. The chicken was greasy & honestly did not taste like chicken shack chicken. It tasted like KFC chicken which is nearby. The potatoes were burnt very dark brown blackish color and soggy soaked in grease. I cannot believe the quality of food they allowed to go out the door. I called & spoke to the store manager Andy he blamed it on a new kid & indicated other customers have called to complain about the food. I was disappointed that I payed my hard earned money for this crap. Even more that he admitted other customers complained as well, yet nothing was done to correct the issue. He offered to replace my food but I no longer want anything to do with this location. I have no trust in him. The location on Woodward is so much better I never had a complaint. The location on Woodward delivers quality food. Next time I will always check my order before I leave. Please do the same. Stay away from this location if you want quality food. read more
