Atmosphere: The decor has a bit of flare to it, though the space itself, especially for seating is rather narrow and small. This used to be the best deal on healthy, casual food in our area. Less so now. First they increased all prices and added the up-charge to get guasacaca as a side. Then they made the guasacaca container smaller. Finally, to add insult to injury, they trained the checkout staff to tell me that "it's actually the same size, just a different shape of container now." Complete nonsense. If that's the new size, fine. But you should eliminate the up-charge. The chicken is still delicious, but the prices are creeping toward a level that doesn't make sense. I came into this place with high expectations because of all the positive reviews, pretty photos, and because I heard they served Inca Cola (my favorite). However, sad to say, I was deeply disappointed! Maybe, it's because I'm spoiled and know what real Peruvian chicken is suppose to taste like! I ordered the 1/2 chicken with two sides 'to go', and to my disappointment the chicken was super dry and bland, and there was definitely nothing Peruvian about it! Unfortunately, the two sides, followed a similar pattern; bland and dry, small portions and overpriced. To make matters worse, they didn't give me any sauce for the chicken!!!! Who can properly eat Peruvian chicken without the sauces?!?!?! Smh! Again, a major disappointment! I should've known better given the location. I'm sure they at least got the whiskey right tho, I just happen to pass on it. For now, I'll just stick to my Pollo Rico or Super Pollo places in VA/MD. read more

While there are a lot of Peruvian chicken joints popping up in the DC area, this one is my favorite. From the dining area, you can see the cooks pulling fresh chicken out of the furnace, off the skewers, cutting it up, and transferring it directly onto serving plates. For an individual meal, my favorite is the 1/4 dark chicken (super flavorful and juicy) with the plantains and coleslaw. This combination gives you savory, spicy, sweet, and super crisp/fresh notes all at once! The coleslaw isn't heavy like others I've had - it's the perfect refreshing side to pair with the meal. While this place provides all the perks of fast food (and it is fast), the quality and taste does not reflect that food genre at all. Definitely recommend stopping by! read more

I was very excited to order for the very first time since I see they have great review. I ordered a whole grilled chicken with 4 sides. The chicken was not fully cooked. It was still red inside. The taste of the chicken was very bland. I love Peruvian chicken and tried most of them within the DC areas. I have to say this is by far the worst in term of taste and quality. At the very least, the chicken should be fully cooked if your restaurant sells chicken for business with somewhat at a higher price point. My fours sides include arepitas, arroz chaufa, pepperonata and yuca fries. I didn't like any of the side besides the yuca fries due to the bland in taste of the others side dish. All their sauces were very mediocre. I am not sure why they have such a high rating, perhaps they have a good ambient for their in-door dining!?! This was my take out order experience. This place is fantastic, the first time I went I was really confused about the bar situation. Luckily the staff explained it was in the back behind the "freezer" door - very clever. The ambiance in the back is totally different, very dark and intimate. We are whisky people, and the selection is pretty good. The whiskey Wednesdays are a must, the happy hour overall is a great deal. I particularly love the $5 happy hour chicken arepa sandwich, which is huge (I can't finish it alone). The arepa is stuffed with a chicken guacamole salad that is usually so abundant that it is falling out of every corner. I also love their yucca chips (also with guacamole). I've had it in NoVA and even spent a week in Bolivia getting sweated by the authorities, buying scarves, getting hip to Salteñas and eating Pollo Broaster. All that is worth mentioning to proclaim myself an expert. Finally, the day came to see what Chicken + Whiskey was about. Since I had read plenty of reviews, I was ready to try the Guasacaca and the plethora of sauces along with the main. All of that went out the window as I ordered a Quarter Chicken, white with Yuca. I tried to get it with plátanos but they were out. It was around an hour before closing. That's life, I wasn't too mad. I wish I'd remembered to try the Guasacaca. The Chicken came with a cup of White and a cup of Red sauce. The red had an interesting taste. I appreciated the uniqueness of it but I preferred the white one. Now with everything but the sauces. I liked the spice medley that was on top of the Yuca. That was a cool touch. The portion size was not what I am used to at cheaper places but, this is 14th Street NW so I'm salty. The Chicken just didn't do it for me. I honestly have had so much better chicken like this at other places. Now, I might have enjoyed my meal more if I had ordered something else. A sandwich or wrap or something and I may do that for my next visit. I just don't know when that will be. read more

So I avoided this place for a while. Which is one of the biggest regrets of my life (a bit dramatic? Nahhh). I thought that this restaurant served some sort of fried chicken menu. I (regrettably) do not eat fried chicken, both because it makes my heart a rolling ball of fire and also makes my thighs huge. SO I continued to walk by every day until I found a friend eating outside who explained to me that this is PERUVIAN CHICKEN. Rotisserie chicken roasted in heavenly Peruvian spices served with all the beans and rice and yuka fries you could want and the two most incredible sauces I've ever had (I need to find a way to buy these in bulk - C & W please bottle and sell them - I would 200% buy). I'm not a huge fast casual fan, I find that they're usually outrageously unhealthy or just poor food quality. But I have chicken and whiskey probably at least once a week. It's the one thing my boyfriend and I can always agree on and I only feel a tiny bit guilty when I get the yuka fries. The food is so delicious and flavorful, you really can't go wrong. read more

Fast-casual in the front, party in the back. Was meeting friends here and almost missed that there was a bar in the back when I didn't see them in the restaurant portion. The bar had a DJ, seating around the bar, some high tops, and some standing space. It was intimate but not too crowded. The music was good, though almost too loud to have a conversation with the person next to you. My friend just turned 30 and we couldn't have asked for a better complement to our socially distanced celebration. I had the Guasacaca and chips, Boraccho wrap, and the El Luchador to drink. All were PHENOMENAL and really punchy in flavor, particularly the wrap. The chicken was SO GOOD...better than any other Peruvian chicken joint I'd been to before. The skin is dark dark and super flavorful, and the meat is perfectly moist and delicious. The yuca is cut into thiccc fries and seasoned with something a little spicy and a lot good--the outside is crispy while the inside is soft and delightful (we ordered extra to go after devouring our first side). Make sure to get the sauces (I much preferred the amarillo), they add another level to the already epic food. The plantains were really ripe and sweet, nothing like I can make at home.
