I can't speak on the food -- this review will focus on the speakeasy. It's not all that hidden... you walk through Chicken + Whiskey past the register and you'll see a security guard that will check your IDs before entering. I went on a Saturday evening, and while it was busy, it wasn't unbearable! And people constantly come and go -- there was enough space for my group to get settled. We were greeted by a boomin' DJ and some lovely holiday decor! The drinks -- both the cocktails and the shots -- were delicious! We had a few of those ski shots -- the passionfruit banana was my favorite I think. The PB&J burned a little. I got a drink that was literally ignited; the Disco Diablo. It was tequila-based and just so so good. While it may not be one of the most creatively hidden speakeasies in the city, the vibes were there and the prices of the drinks were super reasonable. I haven't explored too many, but so far this might be my favorite one. It makes me eager to try even more! read more

If you're from the South, think an elevated Pollo Tropical! I brought a group of about 10 students here, so we only experienced the "chicken" part. Service is very fast -- you walk through the line, point to what you want, and can enjoy your meal at their open tables. I ordered a half chicken with yuca fries, rice, and plantains, which definitely enough food for two people. Their sauces were not as good as Pollo Tropical, especially if you order white meat chicken, which is a little dry. My DC local friend has been hyping Chicken + Whiskey to me ever since he tried it for the first time a few months back. I'm glad I finally got to try it yesterday for dinner! One thing I enjoyed was the speakeasy-style bar in the back with lots of Halloween decorations and dim lighting. I see the appeal of eating good Peruvian chicken and grabbing a drink or two after. The seating indoors is all bar-style and the tables are pretty narrow. Probably not the most comfortable eating in especially if you came here with a lot of people, but good chicken is good chicken. I'll do it. 1/2 CHICKEN WITH 2 SIDES - 13.99 I wanted to try both the dark and white meat to see how good both are. If i had to use only two words to describe the chicken, I'd use FAT and JUICY. They definitely brined this chicken well as it wasn't dry (the white meat was slightly dry, but the sauces they provided helped for sure) and super tasty. My only complaint is that the chicken sat in a small pool of oil/grease, which was too fattening/heavy for me. Is it tasty? Yes. The two sides I tried were the YUCA FRIES and MAC N QUESO. Sadly, the yuca fries lacked flavor and were very stale, so they weren't enjoyable to eat. I enjoyed the mac and cheese a lot more and liked the consistency of the cheese along with the creaminess. Adding corn to it was a nice touch. I do have to say that my standards for Peruvian chicken is on the higher end given I live in VA where there's a lot of hole-in-the-wall Peruvian chicken restaurants. We had been passing by this place for a while, and decided to check it out. The chicken here was sooo juicy and tender, it was melting off the bone !! We ordered the half chicken and it gave us a breast and leg. Even the breast was so juicy it was amazing. Peruvian rotisserie chicken just hits differently compared to Costco rotisserie. We also got two sides and got the Yuca fries and the vinegar based salad that reminded me of kimchi. A great palate cleanser between chicken bites. The Yuca fries were solid steak fries and with the two salsas they gave us, were vessels to transport the salsa flavor to our mouths. I was wondering what the whiskey part was because there was no alcohol, but then I saw that in the back there was a bar! The bar was littttttt. Chicken & Whiskey has always been on my list of speakeasies to visit. When it was my birthday, we finally had the chance to go. Chicken & Whiskey is on 14th St. right between S Street & R Street. They have a huge outside seating area with lots of picnic tables. One of the perks of this establishment is that you can either dine in, which also means eating inside or outside. Or, you can order takeout and pick up curbside at a cute little curbside window right outside the front door. This is also a mini whiskey bar where patrons can order drinks at curbside and chose to drink right there! When we arrived we noticed a very clean establishment. The staff was very friendly and the menu takes up a wall, lol! We ordered the quarter (1/4) chicken and tried a variety of sides. We had the Caribbean coleslaw, sweet plantains, Arroz Blanco, and green plantain chips. Their sauces were really good too! After our meal we decided to take a stroll to the speakeasy. Once you walk into the establishment, and head straight to the back, you will be greeted by a freezer door. If you open the freezer door... Welcome to the speakeasy! One thing I noticed, was that it was a little cool. I asked, "it's a little chilly in here, no?" To which I was given the answer, "it's in a freezer!" I thought that was hilarious! But let me clarify, it wasn't freezing, it just was a little cool but I liked it on a DC summer night. The bar was extremely clean and the bartenders were extremely nice. We had a chance to review the menu and select our first round of drinks. We tried the Kool-Aid Caliente and the pineapple old-fashioned. Both were really good drinks! For shots, we try the House fire ball and pickle backs. Loved the House Fireball! The speakeasy gave a nice vibe and the music was really good. Please note that you cannot bring any outside food or drink inside of the speakeasy. However, you can order a few things from the menu once inside but it has to be ordered from the bartenders. Overall, I had an amazing experience! It is one of the best Peruvian chicken dishes that I've had in the city. Delicious chicken and their prices do not break the bank. They are open till late time and customer service is exceptionally good. I needed some ketchup and even though staff member named Verdant (I'm sorry if I misspelled) was occupied by a different task, he paid attention to me and was happy to go all the way to the back of the restaurant and brought some ketchup for me. Verdant definitely deserves a raise! You do not get that level of excellent customer service everywhere, so Chicken + Whiskey is one of those restaurants in D.C. that I will definitely be back. Sure, it may be smoked, but it also consists of less spices than the chicken from other Peruvian rotisserie shops around town. Peruvian chicken is really all about the spices, and not so much the smokiness - so I'm a bit puzzled on how this place comes across as Peruvian or even Venezuelan except for the sides that are offered. The back is a whole other world, they have a whiskey bar that plays great music and awesome drinks (speakeasy feel). You honestly wouldn't even know it was there unless you've been before. It's right in the back by the bathrooms. The line moved quick and the servers were patient while I took forever to figure out what my friends and I wanted. I ordered the Mac'n Queso Con Pollo. The sauce was creamy and my chicken was juicy! I loved that the chicken was pulled. My favorite part of the bowl was the crispy bacon, shaved red onions, and jalapeños. We all agreed that the creamy (Amarillo) dipping sauce was fantastic and the hot (picante) sauce was super-spicy...Amarillo was the clear winner in our group and we put it on nearly everything. Twas my favorite "casual" restaurant while visiting D.C. Unbeknownst to me they don't start serving alcohol until after 4 p.m but I still enjoyed nonetheless. While visiting the staff were celebrating an employees birthday & while singing happy birthday the offered the entire dining room a slice of it which we kindly obliged since we helped sing. The star of the night was the "La comadre". The chicken is extremely tender & juicy. The sauce that accompanies the nacho poquito wraps wasa match made in heaven. Update 10/13/21 - ok, one exception: skip the "cerdito barbacoa" sandwich. The sign promises a "BIG sandwich, knife and fork recommended" but the actual sandwich is NOT big. It's average to small. And you definitely won't need a knife and fork (or more than about 60 seconds) to eat it. The biggest thing on the sandwich is the dry, cold roll. Skip it and go for the excellent chicken and wraps. read more
