I cannot say enough about Children's. We were checked in with my then 7 month old son having what looked like infantile spasms, or possibly petite mal seizures. I was a hot mess, crying over everything-when they had to insert his IV, when they had to do the temporary catheter, etc. I about lost it when they took us down to the epilepsy wing--and I felt like it was ridiculous for me to be upset when they hadn't even monitored or diagnosed him yet. I said so much to the nurses, and they brought me Gatorade and hugged me! I was not treated this kindly when I was actually giving BIRTH at Northside Hospital! lol!
Every person we dealt with--nurses, doctors, neurologists, procedure techs--they all were polite, professional, good listeners, GREAT communicators, and offered plenty of what we needed at the moment--compassion. Thank goodness they identified my son's activity as "shuddering attacks" which they explained are completely benign and will dissipate as he enters toddlerhood. But all I could think of were the families that don't get such relieving news.... and how having a staff this competent (and concerned about not only the child's welfare, but his family's, too) makes the difference in dealing with such an arduous and upsetting situation as having an epileptic infant. Clearly, bedside manner is better here than any hospital or treatment center I've encountered.
The cool stuff: they have a giant aquarium at the welcome center, which the kids go nuts over, as well as an area that you can go and ask for an overnight room key (we were there for 4 days, so those rooms can really save your neck and back! My mom and I took turns so that someone would always be with my son as he slept). Celebrities show up often--Kellie Pickler was there when we were. The food is decent. I'm a breakfast person, so the morning selection seemed to satisfy me the most. DON'T get the chicken fingers. It's like eating out of a frozen Tyson bag. Too much batter; poor-quality meat. They have televisions in the rooms--with the outlets you need to install Apple TV. It's super easy and my mom and I were able to enjoy some Netflix options instead of run-of-the-mill cable shows. If your child is feeling up to it, they have a really neat outside playground area where you can get some fresh air. And closeby to that, there's an indoor playroom with all sorts of fun stuff for the kiddos to explore and experiment with. There's also a library near the welcome center with literature for both adults and kids alike. This is an unbelievably accommodating place, and I think it should be. I don't think anyone knows what pain is until they see their child feel it, and they can't take that pain away.... And so many families deal with this for months and years--I can't imagine what they must go through. Thank goodness for places like Children's, who help to take the edge off a bit and love these families through their fear and concern for their littles.
Thank you to all the wonderful doctors and nurses who helped us through such a scary time. read more
