A few of us gals were riding cross country and stumbled on this wonderful place. Staff was great, the owner a hoot, and food was the best I'd had in a while. Fresh, well priced and proportioned....just the right amount of cilantro in the salsa (because I really dislike cilantro!!!) We had a great overall experience. I wish I lived closer so I could enjoy this gem on a regular basis. I had the chicken fajita salad, another had the chicken fried steak, another had a big breakfast platter, and the final one had combination platter with chips and salsa (all freshly made!!) We were all well fed and satisfied with our meals. Highly recommend this place!!! Just as a fun note, I was wearing a shirt from Custer that had a bison looking at a burger with the caption "Holy Crap, Bill! Is that you?" Decent food, good friendly service. I had their beef vegetable soup and steak fajitas salad. My husband enjoyed a meat burrito and tamales. Everything is home made. Tamales are incredible, very authentic served with green or red chili sauce... My favorite part was cherry pie, fresh from the oven! Not overly sweet, just what the doctor ordered. Chili Hills is not the fanciest or most elegant restaurant that I have been to, but it is a great local establishment with a New Mexico taste. It was a Saturday evening and the mood was set with a one-man-band singing some great old songs that made me feel comfortable and pleasant. The waitress was friendly and the service was prompt as around 15 other people were eating. The food was ok and the menu had many options available with a New Mexico cuisine. I had the enchiladas with red chili sauce and an added egg over easy for an extra $1.30. Complimentary chips and salsa are included and were pretty good. I will most likely be back to this establishment at some point. read more

Stopped in on a cross country move. Had been looking forward to some local New Mexican food for some time. We used to live in Taos and couldn't wait to have a good smothered burrito with red or green chile. We were not disappointed. The restaurant was bright, clean and the service was excellent. Carne Adovada tacos and smothered burritos were just as yummy as we had hoped. Pinto beans were slow cooked, soft, creamy and smokey flavored. Picky 12 yr-old thought the ambiance was just fine. The best place to eat this side of the Mississippi! Of course it is a local restaurant in a small New Mexico town, so maybe chandeliers aren't in order, but the restaurant was beautiful, with art on the walls and soothing music to listen to, very clean and the waitress was so pleasant and helpful! That's for the ambience, but for the food....my goodness, the portions were so large and flavorful. I ordered the Mexican Combination plate and it was as savory as I have eaten anywhere. I am a big eater and rarely leave food on my plate but here I had to! I will most definitely eat here again every time we pass through Moriarty New Mexico again! People are wonderful. Food is always good however these guys do not know how to make traditional carne adobada. I have tried twice and both times it is the same thing- roasted/boiled chunks of pork, rolled up in a tortilla and red chili poured on top. No other fillings in the burrito- just a few chunks of the described pork. SO, do I like them? Yes. Will I return? Yes. Will I have their version of traditional Mexican food? NOPE. Give me a burger and fries- and btw- if the oil is old or dirty, skip the fries and give me some coleslaw instead. Love you guys, but you really need to pay attention to those things. read more

We were in town for a wrestling tournament and this place was near our hotel. We decided to stop despite the one negative review because another review mentioned homemade pie and my husband was convinced. This place was clean and the customer service was OUTSTANDING! The owners were there and they made us feel like we were joining them for dinner in their home. We had 5 in our party and the food came out quickly and was very tasty. My husband had the chili hills breakfast with eggs, bacon, hash and pancakes. He thought it was very good. I had the stuffed sopapilla with beans shredded beef. It was tasty and he red chile was tasty and not too spicy. Kids had bean burritos, chicken sandwiches and breakfast hash and corn beef. Everyone enjoyed it and no complaints. Of course we had to try the pies! We tried the peach, apple, and pecan. ALL delish! My very picky eater son tried the Oreo pie and didn't care for the filling because he didn't like pudding and when the owner asked us how we like the pie he told her it was ok! I was mortified! I live in San Diego. It's hard to find good Mexican food. The salsa was great . Good flavor. I had the 3 combination plate. 1 taco, 1 enchilada and 1 tamale. That was delicious with a little heat. I got biscuits and gravy with a side of bacon. Well...I don't recommend this dish. The gravy is from a package... it's the exact same gravy that is served in hotels with complimentary breakfast. I really expected house made gravy after seeing the photos and reading the reviews. My hash browns were not cooked ...still cold and raw in places. The side of bacon was also under cooked... the fat on the bacon was almost raw. They were busy and our food came out really fast. Now I know why. My boyfriend got huevos rancheros and it was very good. The pork was tender. His hash browns were also under cooked... their coffee was very good. So my advice: ask for well done bacon and hash browns... and SKIP The gravy and biscuits.... waitress was nice and friendly read more

So...I live in Arizona part time, and this Mexican food beats any we have there. I had the combination plate with cheese enchilada, beef taco and pork tamale, topped with red and green chili. It was delicious. The pinto beans were the best ever, not too salty, perfectly cooked. The Spanish rice was delicious. You have to try the homemade pie. We had one peach, one chess, and a green chili-apple pie. All were real homemade with real homemade crust and real whipped cream on the side. I've had green chili-apple before, but this was the best one I've ever eaten. Not too sweet or over spiced. This will be our new food stop every time we travel through New Mexico. We ended up here because La Hacienda was closed and Nachos parking lot was packed. There aren't many choices in Moriarty. We should have gone home. The young man who greeted us (I use the word "greeted"loosely.) was picking at his nose. He had a nose ring, so maybe he was fussing with that. But he was touching his nose. He had on a baseball cap, Jean jacket, no apron...I wasn't really sure he worked there. The whole place seemed disorganized, and the employees looked flustered. We waited a long time for our food. Another waiter noticed and asked if anyone had taken our order. That was the only contact we had while we waited for our food. Nobody apologized, offered us more water, or an explanation. We actually considered leaving. The food finally came. The enchilada plates were lukewarm. My daughter had ordered sweet potato fries and didn't get them. The waiter with the nose ring told my daughter she didn't order sweet potato fries, and he could order them but it would be a long wait. Never mind. We ate about half our food and left. I don't know if they were just having a bad night, but we won't be back. read more

My hubs ordered The Duke Burger (1/2 lb. patty, bacon, green chile, chipotle mayo, pepper jack cheese, spinach, red onions, tomato & "special spices". Food was good, but took almost an hour to get it. We were served chips and salsa, but no refill was offered when we finished them (and it was still another 25 minutes until we saw our meals). Three stars my seem generous, but food did taste good and slow service is fairly common in this region. But we probably won't go back. read more

We arrived early for breakfast and had the huevos rancheros-- excellent! Fluffy eggs with Christmas chile, smothered with cheddar and topped with a dusting of lettuce and tomato. The beans and hash browns that accompanied the eggs were both very good. Great coffee, great iced tea. I would give five stars for the food and the friendly service, but I can't give five stars when a restaurant does not offer real butter (an absolute must for me), and the honey was a "honey blend" (which I'd never seen before). We will surely return when we are in Morarity again and easily recommend this cafe for its good food and great service -- just no butter. read more

I had the taco plate with chicken and carne tacos. The chicken was this nasty pink mush that kind of tasted like vomit. The carne was also mushy and slightly better, though smothered in a sauce that tasted like the cook messed up the recipe. We asked the desk clerk at the motel who delivered as we had no desire to get back in the car to go out to dinner. She gave us several menus and wasn't sure if Chili Hills delivered or not. I called and asked the girl if they delivered and she first said no. Then she said, well let me ask the owner. I could hear him in the background say "sure, I'll take it out to them".
