When I asked the server how much everything was, she asked us if it was our first time there and we said yes. She gave out a chuckle and informed us that we needed to download the pricing information from the QR code that was on our table and that not only did that have the pricing but it also had more items than what the menu she gave us had. Once we downloaded the menu, it indeed had MANY more items along with the prices. The prices are very comparable to that of Din Tai Fung. We ordered a TON of food. We had mostly appetizers. We ordered the chicken noodle soup, fried rice with pork, garlic string beans, shumai, flat cut noodles with beef, crystal shrimp, woodear salad, pan fried dumplings with pork, spicy cucumbers, xiao long bao and then we had the mango and pineapple iced tea for beverages. The tea was EXCEPTIONAL! The chicken soup was very clean and had beautiful flavor. The noodles with beef was VERY OILY. So oily that it was almost inedible for me. The crystal shrimp had a very fishy taste which indicated to me that the shrimp was not fresh. The woodear salad was delectable and refreshing with the lovely little crunch that the mushrooms give. The cucumber salad had way too much spice on it. All I tasted was the red pepper flakes which wasn't appealing. The garlic string beans were divine and very reminiscent of the beans from Din Tai Fung which I absolutely LOVE. The other items we got, I didn't try so I can't comment on them. The service was impeccable. Everyone was very nice and attentive. I would be back just for the service but not necessarily the food or the pricing. I wouldn't have minded the pricing if the food didn't lack. But we spent $191 on food that was for the most part mediocre. This last part is by no means the restaurants fault but we did cut our dining experience short because a table catty corner to us had a guest vomiting all over the floor while seated at his table with the rest of his party and it was NOT QUIET vomiting. We could hear him barfing and we could hear it splattering all over the floor. This took our appetites away and we asked for our remaining items to go. The restaurant employees were quick to clean up the mess but I was actually kind of surprised that they didn't ask the guest to step outside. The whole restaurant went silent and everyone kind of looked at one another and made the face of "I'm trying not to throw up too." But whatever, people get sick and things happen. I'm just surprised that the guest stayed seated and didn't even attempt to get to the bathroom nor did the restaurant ask him to go outside. Needless to say, we left trying not to throw up ourselves. That was CON #1 - if you're going to open a hot pot / MalaGuo place, you need to turn on the AIR CONDITIONING (especially when it is July in rancho & the temp is 94 degrees outside). Your poor employees must be burning up!! When the food arrived, it was delicious - BUT, then I encountered CON #2 when approaching the sauce bar. One of the main essentials for a successful hot pot place is the SAUCE. the sauce is limited with maybe 5 options? - sesame, soy sauce, vinegar, sesame oil, and chili oil. As an Asian American who has tried her fair share of several hot pot places throughout Southern California and Asia the sauce makes or breaks the hot pot food. And let me tell you I have never gone to a hot pot place and thought, "oh my gosh I'm so excited to dip my veggies and beef and soy sauce and vinegar!" NO - the saving grace of the sauce bar was the sesame sauce. When I noticed that the sesame portion was empty, I went to the cashier and ask them if they could refill it. Lastly, for CON #3 - I sat next to the table closest to the bathroom. Though I know they were trying to make it friendly for all customers by implementing a wheelchair ramp, it was positioned too closely to the table that every time I stood up to get a cup of water to relieve myself from the humidity and heat in the restaurant, I almost tripped each and every single time! This has to be a safety hazard!! I usually only give five stars to restaurants everywhere that I visit; however, I do believe that these negative aspects need to be addressed. I gave one star for the deliciousness of the food and freshness of the vegetables/meat + another star for the kind servers there. I'll definitely be going to the Arcadia or Brea one from now on.
