Loved our breakfast burritos! Got mine Xmas style (with both red and green chile). My hubby got his with green only. We know our breakfast burritos--these were excellent. Person at the window who took our order was very friendly. Loved watching them make the burritos. Outdoor dining only--patio is nice. Most people who ordered did take out. They do not fully wrap the burrito in the tortilla like some places so be prepared for that. We did need a fork to eat what fell out but that didn't phase us at all. Everything in the burrito. Layered with red chili, meat, eggs, potatoes (hash browns), cheese, green chili in that order. They do take credit cards, though cash is preferred. Hmm what can I say!? I first had one of these babies nearly 18 years ago, different owner then, guy was from California actually near where im from and just funny and great guy yet a bit like the Seinfeld soupnazi on the exterior if you didn't stop and get to know him. This place is a blink and you'll miss it type of joint set back from the road with a little sign and just a small hut back off the road. Cracking out delicious breakfast burritos 6am to 1pm daily. My fav is the Brick - a red chili with bacon but sometimes a Christmas. You can ask for much hotter options if you dare - but I like to feel my mouth the rest of the day. Was happy to be back here the other day and get myself a Brick and sit on the patio like old times. Hope this plays stays open another 10-20 years at least! read more

After looking for a quick breakfast we ended up here thanks to Yelp. I was a bit hesitant when I saw how small the joint was but we went inside. The menu is small, but the taste is there!! Hubs ordered an avorado burrito that was spicy, and I ordered a plain egg and cheese burrito with no chilies. The burritos were huge and delicious. Don't be fooled by this place. This little spot is located right off Trinity and is a take out only establishment. I went around 9am on a Saturday and there was a minimal wait, but the cashier was so sweet and gave our dog a piece of ham while we waited outside for our burritos. I tried the $8 Super Breakfast option with green chili and it had ham, sausage, bacon, cheese and potatoes. It was fresh and tasty, but needed some salt since the potatoes and green chili were not seasoned at all. I still enjoyed it and would go back for another burrito in the future. read more

I ordered a handheld breakfast burrito. The food was bland, no salt at all. The bacon was almost burnt. The service was fast but in exchange they didn't even make a proper burrito, all the chili and cheese was on the outside lining the foil. Probably the best burrito I have ever had. Wife and I had the ham breakfast burrito with the red sauce. Great flavor to sauce and the perfect amount, enough to give a kick, but not inundated to ruin the flavor of the meat and cheese and potatoes. Daughters had burritos as were raving about how good they were and how we should go back later in day (and they are generally picky). Small place, take out only. Staff was very friendly and funny, I assume I ordered from the owner, who was personable. A must eat in Los Alamos. Glad we came here during our NM Adventure. The Chili Works was the best part about living in Los Alamos ('94-'99). My family swore by their breakfast burritos. My dad was a regular and they always had his waiting for him at 7:30am each morning. The bacon, green, no cheese (Eggs, hashbrowns, bacon, green chile) was his standby. There is nothing on their breakfast menu that isn't amazing. My favorite was the combo, green, cheese (ground beef, beans, cheddar cheese and green chile.) I highly recommend this place, don't eat anywhere else in town if you only have a couple hours there. It's the best! (President Clinton came to town plus 400 of his staff when I lived there and the Chili Works shut down because they had 400 burrito orders to fill. It's that good) WARNING: New Mexico hatch green chile is noted for being extremely hot! Don't listen to the natives who are acclimated to the pain! I went to Chili Works for breakfast after hearing about a hole-in-the-wall restaurant with great burritos. It truly is as hole-in-the-wall as it gets, with a 10x10 foot kitchen/ordering area and a small patio with tables for eating - not to mention the intimidating biker dudes that run it. Personally, I've never cared about fancy decor so this wasn't an issue, but if you're looking for a fine dining experience this isn't the place to go. I ordered a "Dr. Ruth" (sausage, Christmas chili, and cheese), which came out to $6 even including tax. Amazingly, I was handed my burrito even before I finished paying. The burritos is absolutely stuffed, with eggs, hash browns, sausage, and chile overflowing out the top, so you definitely get your money's worth. From the first bite to the last, the taste was phenomenal. In my 2 months here in New Mexico, this was the best tasting chili I've had so far. If I had to nitpick the burrito was slightly heavy on the potatoes, but realistically it didn't make the burrito any less delicious. As soon as I finished it, I went back and got another for lunch. The guy working the counter (no name tag but an older bald man) quickly said "no". He stared at me for a few seconds and when I asked if he was joking he said "breakfast is over and we're closing soon, sooo" and looked at the door as to tell me to take off. No people skills whatsoever. What a disappointment, it's obviously my fault that I got here late but I didn't see a cut off time. There isn't a lot of salt or flavor in the potatoes or the beans. They sell huge burritos so its good for a big appetite. Where do I even begin? This over-hyped hole-in-the-wall offered one of the most mediocre breakfast burritos I've ever encountered. I was told to make the "chili pilgrimage" to Los Alamos to experience the stuff. This place has the kind of hipster, pretentious attitude that certain burritos have secret names. Even if you're not cool enough to know them, you still apparently need to know the right order to list your desired ingredients in or the kid behind you in line laughs at you. Hopefully he choked on his undercooked bacon, as I nearly did. And sure, I can appreciate hot chili, but it doesn't need to be so hot that it makes it even less appetizing. Not only that, but it shouldn't all be stuffed into one end of the burrito. Apparently it's cool for the native high school and college kids to make "burrito runs" to chili works for their fixes. Two words. SUPER CHRISTMAS. I'm an adopted New Mexican, not born and bred. Last week was my first trip to Chili Works! After hearing about it for just about the entire 3 years of dating my man candy, I finally had to have it. I knew it was going to be good. But New Mexican chili is weird to me, as it is to most outsiders. It's kind of bitter, and doesn't have much in it other than peppers. But the Super Christmas burrito came THIS close to blowing my mind. The best part was the red chili mixed with the 1/2 inch ham tube that ran the length of my burrito. Every burrito should contain at least 1 mandatory ham tube. There was also machaca spread on the tortilla, bacon (thick n yummy), some kind of mushy potatoes, some cheddar, and a miniscule amount of eggs. Make sure when you eat this puppy to keep the tinfoil on it and peel back as you go, lest you have a lapful of Christmas. You heard it here first. Chili works... what could you do differently? Fry your potatoes to crisp em up. Also, some extra eggs'd be nice. Nice gut brick you guys got there. read more

I am glad all the out of towners love it so much! A breakfast burrito here is a food ball. That is because it is mostly potatoes. There is very little egg or meat and the chile is not hot (well, maybe for an out of towner). The service is fast and furious and you had better have your mind made up before you get to the register because it won't get any easier. But the selection is good and the prices are reasonable. If you want an extra spicy yet bland wad of meat and potatoes, then their super breakfast burrito may be for you. Otherwise, there are significantly better breakfast burritos in town (across the street, in fact), and vastly better such fare in NM at large. Their is chili hot, yes, but the breakfast burritos are overloaded with 'mashed potatoes'. They use standard sausage patties for their burrito sausage, which is both typical and not very tasty. Gotta bring the group average down a bit. I may change my rating in the future if I actually get to try one of the celebrated breakfast burritos, but until then, I'm going to give a BIG thumbs down! I came in just after 11 am on a Friday and attempted to order a burrito. Apparently a place that is only open for 7 hours (6am - 1 pm) is unable to serve their whole menu past a certain point. Of course, reading the menu you find no cutoff time, but based on the lovely attitude of "cash register guy" I should've known this. Oh yeah, the attitude... How about trying a "Hello, what can I get you?" or maybe, after separating my hard earned dollars from my hands, saying a simple "thank you?" I literally saw the "cook" hand a bag to a customer, and when that person said "thanks," the friendly guy just turned around and walked away! Not even a simple smile or nod, just a general "F**k you, I'm out!" In fact, if I was that customer, I would've preferred a middle finger - something, ANYTHING would be great. Apparently us stupid customers don't even deserve that. Well, not this guy - I don't care how amazing the Chile is, life's too short to deal with A-holes! As I was leaving, with my money still in my pocket, a semi-empty stomach but my dignity intact, "cash register guy" shouted "WHAT, YOU'RE NOT GONNA EAT?" Nothing satisfies the agony of a Chili Works craving like a "Super Christmas" (Try to imagine what keeps the good people at the American Heart Association awake at night and you'll invariably have visualized the super breakfast burrito: scrambled eggs, hash-browns, chorizo, bacon, sausage, and ham wrapped in a flour tortilla, all topped with generous amounts of red and green chile and cheddar cheese). Visited New Mexico from Texas and decided to get breakfast at this local spot. I have to say, the breakfast burritos with the green and red chile might be the best breakfast burritos I've ever had. I want to give them 5 stars, I really do. From a sentimental standpoint, I've been going here every time I'm in town, ever since the first time my then-future wife brought me to meet her folks more than 10 years ago. At this point, I can't visit without making at least one visit. But, if I look at their food in honesty, it isn't the best. I've learned to stay away from their red - it's gritty to the point of tasting like spicy earth. Green provides a superior balance of spice and flavor. The burritos are overstuffed, but with potato, leaving you a little short on eggs. I order Christmas, but some of the meats are better then others. The bacon tends past crispy to near burnt, the ham is flavorless, and the sausage is Jimmy Deans. The chorizo I can't complain about, but it would be too much on its own. Somehow, though, it works. Still, a four star rating is nothing to complain about. (EDIT) There was a communication issue that knocked off a star, but they went above and beyond to correct it, and earned it back. read more

It is good to see that the Chili Works is still kickin'. This place got me through the years I spent living on-and-off in Los Alamos. I went back last week, ordered the usual (sausage green) and was instantly transported back in time. The chili isn't the hottest in the state but it is good and consistent.
