we ate at the bistro for the 2nd time. The first was more than a year ago. Compared to the first time it was awful. The fish was over cooked and dry. The bread was not good. The harvest green salad was not harvested except perhaps at Stop and Shop. The best thing was the warm olives. And when we ordered coffee with our profiterole, it came to us barely warm and bitter like the worst final call at a Starbucks. They reluctantly agreed to make a new pot which was also bitter and not much hotter than the first try. The wait staff was pleasant but not efficient. We waited ten minutes for the 2nd coffee while the desert got cold an soggy. I left a 20 percent tip but only reluctantly cause I'm a nice guy. I will not give the place a third try. read more

That having left a message for the owner for a return call about the service we received from the hostess Carol, that I would never hear back. , so imagine my surprise when not only did he return the call , but he could not have been more sorry for what happened.. We spoke for a good 40 minutes.. I have a much better understanding of what went wrong and how it will be addressed in the future.. Hey he is a class act and anyone can have a bad day... NEVER eat at this restaurant! Owner Pat quarrelsome and arrogant. Apparently feels entitled to take your close to $250.00 (food, couple of drinks, tax and tip for 2)for cold food and refused to heat it after two separate requests. Instead we were insulted and loudly told other patrons had hot food and all meals were cooked to order. A misrepresentation, cooked to order implies prepared immediately prior to serving not mildly reheated after taking from refrigerator. Also told, my lamb was not cold because there was steam coming from my plate, they did reheat the vegetables. My lamb was refridgerator cold; husbands veal "steak" was actually SLICED veal and because of the presentation slightly warmer. Have never been treated so poorly in a restaurant for a simple request. Chills bistro located next to chillingsworth was much more casual. The food was great even though they were busy, our server gave us a complimentary lobster bisque while we waited for our appetizers. When you see my rating, you best believe it. I am a former employee of this place as a busboy and have worked on both sides of the restaurant. Chills Bistro and the fine dining area. Both I must say crank out some incredible food and I can only sing high praises (fine dining side especially). The chef truly loves what he does and puts love into his beautiful preparations. At the end of the night, you can often see him out and about conversing with customers to ensure they are enjoying their meals. On the Bistro side, you can get a 3-course meal deal if you arrive before a certain time and that is always worth it. I haven't been back in a couple years, but I am of course very familiar with the hard-working staff behind the scenes and the quality of the food. We came here with no reservation the day after Labor Day. It was very crowded and we were seated in their bar area (very nice). We were told it might be slow as they were short staffed. Our food came in what seed like a normal time to us. It was excellent also. We had the snails and wedge salad to start and the duck and bistro steak. Everything outstanding. read more

Since about 8 years back when we had a great meal at Chillingsworth, we've tried to find time to visit Chills, the casual restaurant with similar fine dining pretensions sharing the same sprawling old house (and presumably kitchen) in this Brewster dining destination. With a tantalizing menu and 3 course early prix fixe dinner and great expectations, we reserved a table for 3 before heading to a 7:30pm show in Brewster. We expected well prepared, fresh flavored dishes with some dazzle and instead had bland, often just barely overcooked selections that even the clotted salt shaker could not enliven. There were a few hits. My wife, a gnocchi fan, comparing all versions to her aunt's home recipe, found her gnocchi appetizer above the standard with good potato flavor- often lacking in other versions and almost as serenely light as Aunt Jen's. The mushroom with "butter fondue"sauce was tasty if a little heavy. Careful eating though allowed the potato flavor to survive the impulse to sauce each bite. Her chicken entrée though was short of expectations. The thin cutlets were overcooked, dry slabs of protein closer to cafeteria or diner treatment with no chicken flavor. The marsala sauce was pleasant if indistinctive. But the bed of linguine seemed infused with the sauce leading us to question the advance prep methods. Our daughter did well with the lobster bisque and local striped bass both with some subtlety and nice texture. The bisque had strong lobster flavor and though a little thick, not so much to make the spoon stand up on its own. (In fairness, my daughter liked the texture and recalls it as thinner than I've described). The striper, in season that week, was fresh and well cooked, holding the moisture and flavor of this local catch, the sauce a repeat of the gnocchi's. She commented on the same restrained careful eating technique required to allow the fish to hold its own. Her choices were the winners for the meal. My gazpacho appetizer had a good tomato flavor but could have used some herbs to make it stand out from standard versions. My flounder however came rolled with a hard leathery overcooked surface requiring more effort than should be required to fork a piece. The interior of the roll crumbled into surprisingly intensely overly mild fish, not helped by the overcooking clearly evident from its top hard shell. A tomato based sauce did nothing to enhance the fish relatively tasteless with none of the promised herb flavor. My first attempt to add some needed salt unsuccessful because of the mostly solid salt in the shaker. A few shakes made the dish tolerable but not worthy of the place and well below expectation. The accompanying "melted leek orzo" was an overcooked tasteless mess. In fact I just had to tax my memory to recall its presence. There was an attempt to blend flavors with some type of lightly vinegared sprouts on top of the fish. Fresh and flavorful, they were probably the best part of the dish and could have worked wonderfully if the fish had not been as disappointing. Desserts, were well received. An intense warm chocolate bread pudding with small scoop of vanilla ice cream was a respectable version and table hit. I now regret calorie counting concerns prevented me from finishing that last spoonful. The cakey contents were full of chocolate flavor with a nice light feel in the mouth. Our daughter's seasonal fruit tart was tasty. Though peach is not my favorite she was pleased. The blueberries though seemed an after thought, unfortunate since they are in season locally. My pistachio crème brulee was tasty and light. The glazed topping crisp but dissolved nicely on the tongue. Coffee, served table side from a beautiful pot, was hot and fresh, though no one ever came by to offer a refill. Service was pleasant and helpful, though our waitress had to resort to a cheat sheet to answer a few questions on some of our choices. Her recommendation of the chicken over the pork loin made my wife wonder how bad the loin might have been, considering her disappointment with her dish. The room is casual with caned breuer chairs, one of which had seen better days. The severely depressed seat required my wife, not a tall woman, to play a short game of musical chairs as we all stood and shuffled the chairs to find one to suit her. Our efforts went unnoticed by the staff who offered no assistance. Tables are relatively close so our conversation and the other diner's were not private. The aforementioned salt shaker, was a petrified mass allowing a few shakes only after a few wraps on the table. Even at the prix fixe price, the tab for 3 with a glass of wine each (nice versions all) came to just under $160 with tax and tip. A similar meal ordered from the a la carte meal would have easily exceeded $200 that would have added more sting to the lackluster experience. For those seeking a casual fine dining Cape dinner, with dazzle and taste, this would not be on our list. read more

We agree with all positive comments regarding Chillingsworth. Excellent food and wonderful staff. But I must comment on the poor maintenance of the grounds and the interior. The outside of this once beautiful building had beautiful well kept grounds, now filed with weeds and plants, bushes, and tress that are all over grown and dying. The brick pathways and and patios are an accident waiting to happen. The bricks are all lifting up with weeds growing in between. Branches hit you in the face if your not careful. I did trip on some raised bricks while walking through. The exterior of building needs scraping and paint. Some Windows need replacing. The outside furniture is a mess. I wouldn't sit there! When entering the building your presented with several raised metal floor connectors that are not highlighted and could trip over them as I almost did. Just beyond the bistro part of dinning. There is multiple small rooms for privacy eating and small parties. All very pretty but dirty. Other areas are also poorly maintained. Spiders and webs in the curtains and around the corners of the rooms. I don't think that the curtains or drapes have been cleaned sence they were put up years ago. Very dusty and full of webs. Rugs in all areas are filthy. Wall papers are cracked , torn, or abraided from chairs rubbing on them, and stained. When we were leaving. My husband noticed that the side and back of my slacks were stained from something on the chair. I was wearing white. It was some kind of sauce which I did not have with my meal. I highly recommend that the owners take this very seriously and provide a clean dinning experience as well as the good Quality of the food. Also that the presentation of the outside gets very badly needed attention. Yup, it's really pricey, and yup, it's kind of formal, but with all of the super casual places on the Cape it's nice to have an option or two for a special night out. Not a burger or pizza in sight. We went to Chillingsworth to do the Cape Cod restaurant week. We were met by an extremely eccentric greeter at the front door who later came to the table and pushed alcohol and getting drinks. I got the truffle mac & cheese which was absolutely delicious! My sister in law had the gnocchi which was good but my husband had the lobster bisque which was poorly seasoned and had very little lobster taste. For the entree my husband had the steak which was burned on the edges but had the most delicious fries. My sister in law is a vegetarian so they adjusted her black pepper linguine to be vegetarian, however it came out with piece of chicken on it. The pasta was alright but the sauce was wretched. It had so much rosemary in it you couldn't taste anything else. I got the chicken piccata which was dry and bland. After tell said eccentric greeter I was told that "I shouldn't have ordered that" and she would have steered me away from making that choice. Dessert was alright..it's hard to mess up dessert. Our waitress also slightly abandoned us for a short time. The best part of our experience was the girls who kept our water glasses full. They were amazingly on top of it!! When my grandparents had a summer house on the Cape, they used to treat me to this restaurant. I vacationed on the Cape recently and was happy to see that it still exists after all these years. We came here for an off season dinner. First they never returned my call for a reservation, and then didn't have our name when we arrived even tho I had called a 2nd time and spoken with someone for a reservation. It didn't matter because there was plenty of room. Then they were out of my first two choices for cocktails, and my husband wondered if his Gold Rush martini had any alcohol in it. Our homegrown tomatoes are far tastier than the heirloom tomato burrata, and the Panko crusted oyster did not have much oyster in it. Our main course of striped bass with the recommended mango salsa was ok, but the scallops were better. Desserts were passable--creme brûlée was cold, and strawberry rhubarb cobbler was also tepid and had way too much ice cream on top. They brought milk instead of half and half as requested and the tea cup was chipped. All in all have had way better meals for this price. read more

I took my boyfriend and grandmother for brunch here over the weekend. The food was excellent and the service was attentive. The whole place had a bit of a snooty vibe to it. Which I didn't enjoy. After we were seated I learned that we were eating in the Bistro part, which was alright. But for how much I spent on brunch I was really hoping for a nicer looking room. There were cobwebs and the menu's looked like they belonged in a diner. Also, we got a hot coffee and 2 iced coffees. All 3 asked for a refill. Our waitress charged us for refills on the 2 iced, but not the hot. Huh?? It was good, but honestly, unless someone else is paying, I wouldn't return. read more

I was so looking forward to dinner at this place, but I'd have to say I was seriously underwhelmed at the quality of the food at the bistro. The oysters had obviously been shucked hours earlier and the mignonette was chocked full of shallots, rendering it mostly inedible. The flounder was terribly seasoned, over cooked and oddly paired with sugar snap peas. The sea scallops were the high point of the meal, perfectly cooked and seasoned. Four of us attended a Pinot Noir dinner at the Chillingsworth on August 8th. We are unanimous that it was one of the best experiences that we have enjoyed anywhere. Along with her husband/chef, Nitzi, co-owner Pat was an organized and wonderful hostess for the evening. The service was gracious and attentive. From the cocktail hour and hors d'oeuvres through the fifth course, it was a luscious, unique and creative dining experience. What an incredible dining experience! While the main dining room now offers a la carte dining, the 7 course prefixe made for a spectacularly enjoyable evening. Chef Rabin puts a delectable menu together and all the courses gave us the opportunity to feel like we got to try everything! The lobster bisque was exquisite. My salmon was perfect. The desserts put me over the moon. Walking into the place, with the decor, the sagging ceiling, and the floor that wasn't quite level, I was a little skeptical (came to know the building is 300 years old!). Chillingsworth reminds me of nothing so much as a Michelin starred restaurant in the French countryside. Our dinner in the main dining room was simply outstanding. My appetizer of an oyster on puff pastry plus an oyster shooter was one of the more unique and delicious dishes that I have ever had. My wife's selection of an appetizer of shrimp in a Béchamel sauce was likewise to die for. Our entrées were also outstanding. Be forewarned that unless you are planning on spending three or more hours over your dinner and have a hefty bill you should not choose the main restaurant. The bistro offers the same menu which can be limited to smaller selections served at a more rapid pace. The ability to have one of their antique laden rooms to retire to immediately after your dinner only adds to the almost decadent luxury of the place. The owners are an interesting and sophisticated couple who exhibit a real love and passion for their work. We will certainly return whenever possible. read more

I never write negative reviews..husband jokes I was born " on a sunny day" ..but my experience at this restaurant warrants one, unfortunately. The site is quaint . The servers competent and friendly. The food..well, I've lived in Europe for years and a frequent visitor of France..and I've had better meals at many run of the mill bistros during my visits..but overall, not bad. So why the two star rating ? Simply put..the owner, Pat. As per the typical " new money " person ( am very familiar with them as I have a home in Chatham and Chilimark MV and encounter them with annoying regularity) , she thinks being condescending and arrogant is how she should act. I watched her interact with many people this evening and she was rude. As someone who's family is one of the original settlers on the Cape, it was with great embarrassment that this woman believes she represents the behavior of Cape dwellers. I was at a corporate gathering with people from all over the world, I needed to apologize every time she walked away. My father was a senior member of RFK's election committee and we had the great pleasure of meeting his sister in law, Jacqueline,at a soirée. I was young, but her charm and respec for everyone ( the sign of old money, sorry) was evident even to a young girl. Pat belongs on one of those real housewives shows. If she wasn't a part of the evening, it would have been much more pleasurable.
