Second issue with this restaurant. Quality of food-Below Average. My complaint is that is that I ordered Shrimp fried rice---they stacked a few pieces of shrimp on the top of the carton, totally buried, and then, nothing. Combo Shrimp/Chicken lo mein. Three pieces of shrimp and a few small bits of chicken---not worth the $20.46. Called China One. I explained to the person answering the phone the issue. Very belligerent. Extremely, in my opinion. It's clear that the experience here was way different years ago then it is now. I didn't visit in person. I ordered in. Food was great, and the portion was enormous. I'm 6'5" and 230lbs. I'm used to eating the kitchen sink. I couldn't even finish my orange chicken and fried rice in one sitting. The chicken was heavily breaded, but at 11 and change I'm totally fine with that. I just tried this place for the first time the other day during a weekday lunch. I am new to the area and am looking for some local American Chinese restaurants. This place is very quintessential American Chinese based off of the menu it's offerings as well as some of the flavors. Portions are very generous pricing is very fair if not on the lower end. The size of the crab Rangoon's which I did not have a picture of are also on the medium to larger size. Very surprising to see a lunch special with shrimp in the fried rice but good to see. The rice could use a little more mixing as there were some white clumps of rice. The Mongolian beef is a little bit on the sweet side which I am not used to but it is still tasty. I tried this place despite the bad reviews, despite the positive reviews trying to debunk the bad reviews too, but absolutely the h*ll not! Even my chinese boyfriend said wtf when we got our food. We ordered hot and sour soup, it was insanely dark and almost as thick as slime, tasted absolutely god awful. We also ordered chow mein (non crispy) and we got a bowl of slimy slop!!! Lunch specials for $5.70 are huge! China 1 is the definition of a hole in the wall. Shady lookimg characters hanging outside in their cards and crazy drivers in the parking lot. I've tried the Sesame Chicken (surprisingly spicy), Orange Chicken (very spicy!) General Tso's Chicken (full of veggies, my fav of the bunch, spicy) and their eggrolls. All three flavors tasted markedly similar even though they were all what I would consider vastly different items. Each lunch special was marked as spicy so I can't say they didn't warn me on that! Their eggrolls are not as big as some other Chinese places but their lunch specials are HUGE in size. We were craving Chinese cuisine on a Monday, and our go to place was not open. China 1 was, so we ordered, and glad we did! The amount of food for the low price made us wonder if it would be good. It was!! The classic beef and pea pods and chicken lo mien was really good, as well as the kung pow chicken and shrimp with lobster sauce. The portions are huge, and each of our meals came with an egg roll and rice. We ordered way too much food for the 6 year of us, but glad we did because we'll all have leftovers for lunch today. I'm glad we took a chance on a new place. We'll definitely order from china 1 next time we have the craving! read more

Just coming from the grocery store, I was too exhausted to cook and I had a taste for Chinese. I was riding down Algonquin and decided to stop in. Based on the number of reviews and being somewhat high, I decided to give it a go. First impression- place was in a run down strip center and inside was not very appealing. Floors and tables had food particles but ironically the place smelled like bleach. Large menu with standard choices. Nothing out of the ordinary. I ordered chicken lo mein. As I ordered the clerk said it would be a 10 minute wait. As I began to wait, I decided to actually review the pictures from the Yelp reviews. To my surprise(not really) I noticed that one mentioned of cockroaches. As I starred around me, I was not surprised yet for some reason decided to continue. I came back into the store , I stood watching the clerks unload boxes. The lady was wearing latex gloves, purple to be exact, and as she was opening a box that appeared to be for soy sauce packets, she shrieked ew and jumped back. The gentleman beside her, seemed non bothered and looked inside the box and moved it to the floor. After seeing the reviews and what I witnessed, I decided that I couldn't do it. I kindly accepted the food, only for the sake of this review. Food- From the looks, it's standard. Not greasy as you may find at other places. Lacked chicken. Large vegetables with a light sauce. Sorry I did not taste it. My recommendation would be to proceed with caution, unless you want to risk extra protein in your food. Signed into my bank account to see me recent activity and they charged me $12.28, that is $5.00 more than what I spent there! Called them today to dispute the charge and the lady on the phone tells me that she found my receipt and I was only charged the $7.28 and that my bank made the error and then said I need to wait a month until they receive their statement and then some guy comes to the phone and tells me to come in Monday with the proof of the charge. I live in the neighborhood and we actually have about 6 chinese food places very close. There's Penang's, China Bowl, Chef Ping's, Absolutely Chinese and a Panda Express all within a mile from my house. This is hands-down the best one of them all. Looks can be deceiving and driving by you might think this place is a dump, I know I do even being a regular customer. It's situated in a kind of run-down strip mall between a liquor store and a mexican food restaurant in a very unattractive area of Rolling Meadows. When you walk in their dining room there is a couple garage sale chairs with some banquet tables. So they could do a little better for themselves image-wise, which is why I'm only giving them 4 stars. But their food is delicious, they use plenty of vegetables in their dishes, and you can't beat the price either. They get your food ready fast, it's always hot and the portions are very generous. China 1 #2 was pretty good. The prices were affordable, the accommodations looked clean, and the portions were appropriate. This wasn't the "OMG I'm so full I could die" type of affordable, but the General Tso's and Beef broccoli were both good. The small rice container that was given was well-packed, so each was easy enough to split and the meal made for 2 normal people sized meals on a small size order. Prices looked typically $5/small $9/large. I had no problems communicating a reasonably complex order which can be a problem sometimes, though it'd be really nice if they had 2 things: 1) Chow fun / wide rice noodles 2) An online menu I've heard a couple of complaints about the neighborhood, but it fronts to Algonquin road and seems safe-enough, though there were some strange looking folk gathering a few doors down. read more

This place was yet another restaurant tucked into a nondescript strip mall. The interior was a little sketchy and snug but served its purpose. It had a broad menu and when asked about their favorites they pointed us towards the Sesame Chicken, Moo Shu Pork, General Tso's and Seafood Delight. It was a sad and tragic moment for me. After spending a year in China I was hoping for the Mandarin host to point me to dishes that could be found in the mainland. Instead we were instantaneously shown Americanized-Chinese dishes -- those that are filled to the brim with proteins coated in deep fried dough and slathered with gravy, and lest we forget the 6 slivers of carrots, the 1" by 1" square of green pepper, and 2 dying sprigs of broccoli that we fought over. We ended up ordering a Large order of General Tso's for approximately $10.45 Post tax. When in Rome. The description above does the dish justice. The staff was very nice, and our food was ready in less than 10 minutes. Overall it was pretty good, yet not great. The spice level was like a slap in the face which was delightful after our tragic jaunt into The Indian Bistro later that night (see other review). Andy states that "it is the spiciest General Tso's that [I have] ever eaten". Especially since those little "spicy chili peppers" that they place next to food dishes are typically misnomers. We will not be returning, especially when The Wonton Gourmet is a stones throw away. We gives this place a 2.5/5 because honestly, when you think of Chinese take-out this is the place you should envision. Ordered lunch for 3 people in my office. Was told it would arrive between 12:10 and 12:20. At 12:40 we hadn't heard anything, so we called. While the person was repeating back our order to confirm who we were, we realized they had a portion of the order wrong. We had ordered through Grub Hub and since you simply select what you want, there shouldn't have been any errors. They said it would take another hour to get the order corrected. We asked them to take the incorrect item off and send the rest. Supposedly the guy was already on his way. These guys are 2 miles from us. 40 minutes later, still no guy. We called again.
