There was some brief confusion when I booked the reservation. I had not realized it was a "horse hotel" with multiple stalls and also campsites as well as rooms. My disappointment was replaced by pure joy upon learning that humans can stay here too, as well as hybridized beings like myself (a centaur)! Everything here is done the old fashioned way, the right way: with kindness, trust, love and simplicity. Staying here will make your heart ache for a simpler time when folks were able to conduct business with a handshake, where their first priority was just treating each other how they want to be treated themselves, with dignity and decency. We came here almost my accident. I'll be honest. Ocean Acres was not in my first, second--or even top five--picks of places to go. We were aiming at much further up the coast. I could find almost nothing and what I could find was neither affordable nor desirable. We did not want to go to some sterile resort where you exist to be milked and sent on your way. We wanted to be in a place that was family-owned and served a purpose beyond just making money as efficiently as possible. We wanted to be somewhere that had actual personality, not just a hollow façade with a minimal, lazy attempt to lure visitors and nothing else. Ocean Acres Horse Hotel was--is--the jackpot on all accounts. Because of a recent death of a family member after a prolonged illness, it was important to be in a place with healing energy. I had a good feeling the moment I navigated my way to Ocean Acres' minimalist website and saw they have no automated process for automated or online bookings. Everything is done personally, over the phone. The owner, Carol did not even ask for my last name, the make of my vehicle or a credit card to reserve the room. She asked us to pay in cash when we arrived. When we did arrive, the first thing I did was try to pay, but she insisted we wait until morning to do so! She wanted us to be able to settle in, relax, and get a good night's sleep first. WHAT?! My thought was: who the hell are you and what time period do you hail from? Where is your time machine? Such a small gesture, but to be endowed with that level of trust by a stranger doing business with me...I cannot think of another time in my 46 years that that's happened. Again, you may think I am making too much of it, but being shown such trust and kindness so quickly had an immediate healing effect on us. It is impossible to discuss Ocean Acres without talking about Carol and her husband, the owners. I don't know how they do it. I could barely keep up with all the adventures they shared with us. Carol is a polymath of the first rank. Her amazing breakfasts held us in good stead the entire time we were there. We ate with the other guests--sometimes sharing a table--in their family dining room! Whilst cooking up innovative and astounding savory and sweet detectibles, Carol regaled us with stories about her life, her work, her relationship to horses, the wheeling and dealing required to get hay. We were also surrounded by her work--stunning oil portraits and bronze sculpture, for which she had rightly won awards. Carol and her husband knew we were hurting, and they pulled out all the stops to help us. They lent us their own, personal ebikes (which were so much fun to take on country roads, tooling around cranberry bogs, little ponds and abandoned farmsteads), Her cooking was phenomenal. She knew we loved animals but had none of our own, so she introduced us to their collie dog Price, with whom we quickly became BFF's in a neverending game of fetch, told us what foods her mini-pony (or was it a mini-donkey?) likes to be fed. And of course, there were other people and their beautiful steeds all around. Just being in the presence of so many happy critters and people had a very good effect on us; it was so needed. The property begins at the highway, off which a short, paved driveway leads to and terminates behind the main house, where the owners live and some of the rooms are. Then, a dirt road goes straight back (west) about a mile--all the way to the sea--passing by a beautiful barn, stalls, campsites, forest, meadows, a pond and other bucolic scenes on the way. Strolling the road on the property (and biking on it) was one of my favorite things to do there. If you ever pined for things (and people) with a personal touch, if you ever just wanted to drop out of the game and NOT be treated like a number, a walking phat money bag with a dollar sign over your head, if you miss interacting like a regular human with other regular humans, if you ever needed some puppy time but had no puppy of your own, if you ever wanted to feel safe, breathe in serenity like it floated in the ethers, if you ever just wanted a really damn good breakfast...Ocean Acres is THE place for you.

It is incredible enough that this beautiful Victorian home built in 1895 on the Columbia River…read morewaterfront has been lovingly restored, but I felt very fortunate that it is open to the public and I had the chance to stay there. It is very accessible from Portland and the drive there is beautiful, and when you arrive at your destination you immediately feel at peace. Brian and Linda do a great job of making you feel welcome. We brought our own snacks and had a picnic in the gazebo and enjoyed the view of the river, which is so wide at that point that it almost gives the visual of being at the ocean as ships rolled by. We stayed in the Hummingbird Room which has a very comfortable bed and a wonderful view out of the window. The rates are very affordable and include breakfast - Brian is a great cook and they offer several meal options. We added the firewood package and were so glad we did, as I type this I wish I could be back there next to the fire while looking at the river. They only have two rooms so if you went with some friends you would have the whole place to yourselves. This really is a hidden gem and I highly recommend making the trip while you can.

It's in a great spot in town with beach access and close to the main drag for shopping or dining. Because we stayed 3 nights, we got 30% off our stay - a promotion they had this summer. That made the stay far more affordable! The room we were placed in had an ocean view and was on the top floor. Really nice. The only downside to this particular room, #431, was being right next to the door/hallway that led to the elevator landing and the Pickled Fish Restaurant. The noise level at night would be a little annoying, so we'd slip out and shut that exterior door that opened to the landing. The only problem with that is guests needed to go through that door to get to the other rooms on the 4th floor. So, the heavy door was clunking open and closed until people were all inside or the restaurant closed. Also, occasionally someone would reopen the door and prop it open...letting the noise rise again. I'd pop outside in my PJs and have to close it again. Each Night...so avoid this room if you can. I'm sure the other 4th floor ocean views were OK. The room was clean and modern. Turndown service still exists here too! It was nice to have our room freshened up! There were even bathrobes and beach towels provided. The front desk is nice and responsive if you have a request. There is no A/C in the room, but they did have a box fan if it got too warm. We cracked opened the windows to let fresh cool air inside. There is a wall heater for the colder days. Bed is comfortable...I thought it was going to be too soft but slept like a rock and wasn't sore afterward. Had a place that functions for a desk with a hard plastic desk chair. The other chairs in the room were more comfortable. We will be back I'm sure in the near future.

We…read morehave stayed at The Bowline in Astoria a handful of times - which is managed by the same parent company - and had expectations about the quality of this hotel due to our very pleasant stays there. Unfortunately this place fell short in a couple of ways. The booking experience is a bit confusing, especially if you are trying to book a room at The Inn at Discovery Coast, which is a smaller hotel owned by Adrift and located a stone's throw away from the Adrift. It is the nicer hotel of the two, as the rooms all have oceanfront views and individual, motel-style entrances to each room. During the booking process, the website does a poor job at distinguishing which property you are booking for, and instead lumps both properties into the same search (even if you specifically select one or the other). We only found out when we arrived that we had booked the Adrift and not The Inn, which was a huge disappointment. They were, of course, fully booked, so we did not have the opportunity to re-book upon arriving. The hotel itself has a much less premium feel than The Bowline, and doesn't feel as well-kept. You can tell they were going for luxury but spared many expenses on the furnishings and decor, as it feels a bit more like a cheap Airbnb. The "partial ocean view" rooms on the side of the building should be called "full parking lot view where you can see the ocean if you stand in the corner". We were also down the hallway from the hotel's bar and restaurant, which stayed loud pretty late. I would hate to have booked a room underneath it, even if it meant facing the ocean. We did find a dead bed bug in the sheets while we were there. Upon reporting to hotel's email, they thanked us but offered no consolation in return, which was disappointing. A coupon off another stay would at least have been nice. The pluses: it's conveniently located near town and the boardwalk that leads into the main part of Long Beach. We did enjoy that walk and access to town! It is likely that we won't be back, unless we are so confused during the booking process that we book it by mistake again.

A million times NOOOOOOO!…read more Check in was easy and the woman at the front desk was very nice. However, this is where the positive experience ended. We got to our room, which was fine, until the children in the room above us started jumping, running, banging on things, etc. This went on ALL NIGHT. From 2:45pm until around 10:30 pm when the lady at the front office finally agreed to call them. We had complained much earlier a couple of hours into it and she said we had to wait until 9:30, but that she was fine with US confrontating them and banging on the ceiling! However, it started right back up at 5:27 a.m. Nobody slept at all. We were all three delirious and complained again. At this point, somebody hadn't shown up for their room the night before, so we asked if we could have that room. We were moved and so happy! The first thing I did was go to take a shower and there was no hot water!!!! After about 30 minutes of waiting and turning the water on and off, it finally got scalding hot for a moment and I tried to quickly wash my hair, but the water pressure was literally dribbling and that made it impossible. Although, even that was better than the people jumping non-stop above our heads. Fortunately for us, at that point we were leaving the next day. Horrible, horrible experience. I honestly would like my money refunded.

The managers response to my original posts stated as followed. "Respone from owner. We were not angry at all nor were our voices raised. You became very upset slamming our door as you walked out to find a public rest room as we do not have one on site for people to use. When you came back we explained to you that we needed your full reservation so that we could enter you into our system you slammed your hand written confirmation number down on to the front desk startling everyone one in the lobby. There were several witnesses in our lobby that could not believe your behavior. We do have it all on camera." I did respond advising that I was the only one in the lobby and I did also advise i too had it recorded as does priceline since I was still on the phone with them to resolve this issue. Again the manager was extremely rude and I simply told her just does not need to raise her voice and be rude as my first encounter with the front desk girls wearing couch glasses stated I just need the reservation information so on my second visit back i gave that to the girl. That is when the manager stated what good would that do we can not see your reservation. I guess again if you can not see it how can you cancel it. I then asked that the management provide me a copy of the video as at this point she is calling me a liar which she does to most people who write a negative review. I have since done some review and all people who have experienced no water or no hot water with no notification from the hotel should receive 100% the stay refunded. Also the people who have encountered bed bugs or bugs as well should have received their stay for fee. Their response has now been deleted good thing I have a screen shot. I now we be sending letters to several departments. First Washington state health departmen, second BBB third long beach city hall and last the general manager. Everyone will be cc and I will also be including the screen shots of other reviews regarding water, bugs and moldy food. . This is not your typical bed and breakfast. The property is completely independent so you're the only guest onsite. The home is beautiful, modern, well appointed, extremely clean and so comfortable. It has tall ceilings and large windows with breathtaking views of Astoria and the Columbia River. There is a fully equipped kitchen with an island, minus the oven. The upstairs area is a comfy sitting area which hubby used for reading. The perfect place you wanted to call home when you're away from home. Rafael was the perfect host. He greeted us upon arrival and showed us around the property. Every morning he prepared delicious hot breakfast and coffee for us. The refrigerator was fully stocked with water, juice and beer. There was even sparkling wine if you wanted to make mimosas in the morning. The bathroom had a towel rack that can warm/dry your towels before and after shower, which I absolutely loved. Who doesn't like a warm towel after shower? It's a 5-star bed and breakfast because every little detail was put into this place and I can't wait to come back and stay with Rafael the next time I'm in Astoria!

The biggest reason I would recommend this place, though, is the owners/managers, Virgil and Trisha. They were not just friendly and chatted with us every time they saw us, but were beyond accommodating -- seriously, sometimes shockingly so -- with every single thing we needed. I have stayed on the Washington Coast many times, and no other time compares to this, thanks to these two people and their fantastic accommodations.
