So glad we took the ride down to try this place! Small restaurant but many many buffet items including sushi. Every item I tried was hot & delicious! What you would expect. My MAJOR issue is that they have the basic ice cream options but the chocolate ice cream had almonds in it. The two people who had chocolate ice cream in my party each had an almond in theirs. My daughter is allergic, thankfully not life threatening but there are plenty of people who are! My boyfriend lives in Methuen and comes here regularly..so the other night I decided to try it out with him. I was shocked! I'm from Medford and have yet to discover a "decent chinese buffet place". Up until now they did not exist. China Buffet has an awesome assortment of food, raw bar. sushi, fried foods, noodles, rice, dessert, galore. What I loved was the sushi! Freshly made sushi. This place almost literally killed me. We went here for my 20th birthday; the next evening I went to bed with an upset stomach. By the next afternoon I was in the ER. We had initially gone to my general care physician, but while I was in the examining room I had started to go into shock from the pain. Thankfully the hospital was literally across the street, and they were able to immediately accept me. They thought at first that I had appendicitis; only after later tests and a fully body scan did they realize I had severe salmonella food poisoning. The green beans are usually good, as is the hot and sour soup, and the alcoholic drinks are fantastic for the prices charged compared to other establishments within a 3 mile radius. This place has been around since I was a child and it STILL looks the same. If you're looking to eat a ton of food for dirt cheap - look no further. As everyone has stated, food is mediocre. Everything kinda tastes the same and it's all kinda greasy. The American section is nasty, stick to the Asian stuff. Props to the decent sized sushi bar. I'm not sure if this place used to be better, or if I was just an...undiscerning teenager. I'll be honest with you: even as said teenager, I'd only ever come here for the sushi, which, though not exactly Masa-caliber, was 1) abundant and 2) pretty palatable for what it was. For a $12 or so dinner, it was worth the money. I came here tonight for the first time in six or seven years, expecting the same type of deal. Sadly, I was greeted with a few sorry imitation-crab-cream-cheese-cucumber rolls; there were four or five nearly-empty plates at the sushi station that were never replenished during the hour I spent at China Buffet. Was it because I came at 7:30 instead of earlier on in the evening? I was forced to turn to the main buffet, which wasn't any better. There was basically no dish turnover. I recall getting up a few times to poke around in the vain hope that something edible would materialize, to no avail: no one ever replaced the crusty, almost empty canister of egg drop soup, or most of the other unlabeled mystery dishes. And, of course, there were the dishes that no one touched: the "apple pie," sketchy looking pasta, some monstrosity made of spinach and cheese, a random meat dish that sat there on a melamine plate instead of the hot plate...plus, the tongs they had out were greasy as hell. Yuck. I ended up having a bite of greasy lo mein, two florets of broccoli, a sesame ball, a "sugar biscuit," an off-tasting spicy tiny octopus, one bite of an overly sweet (!) spring roll, a slice of fried plantain, and when I decided to give up, about two and a half french fries. For dessert - because at this point, why not - I picked up a square of red jello and some lychee. If you want to indulge in unhealthy Chinese food, go elsewhere. Sorry, China Buffet. read more

I enjoy China Buffet. I go there about twice a month or more. I especially love the seafood. They have snow crabs, shrimp with pea pods, coconut shrimp, salmon, other crab dishes and shrimp dishes...I primarily eat vegetables and seafood and they offer such a variety that I always enjoy dinner there. My absolute favorite is the Hot and Sour soup. It is the best I've ever had and I start dinner and end dinner with it. I would love to have the recipe for it so I could make it at home. If anyone has this recipe and is willing to share I would greatly appreciate it. read more

All the food was tepid, the variety was less than robust but they did have some unique items if you like octopus (not me... bu thanks anyhow). Service was slow on drink refills too... I ate here recently at dinner time and would never go back again. The selection is mostly fried, greasy food. Although we were there around 6p.m, there were very few people there, which also meant food stayed out at the serving stations a long time. The restaurant itself was very dirty, especially the floors. The highlight was the customer or two sampling items directly from the serving pan, no tongs used and non of the staff addressed it. I was with my 2 year old son, thinking I'd have to give him the snacks I brought him, but they had mac and cheese, French fries, chicken fingers and fruit that he could eat. The actual Chinese food was good, cooked well. The peel and eat shrimp was very tender. The restaurant itself is clean and modern.
