I was driving through Cotati and realized it was the first day of the Lunar New Year. Seized instantly by the desire for Chinese food, I stopped in at China Chef for what turned out to be a perfect meal in very pleasant surroundings. The sweet and sour prawns were delicious, lightly breaded, and worthy of being passed around at any diplomatic dinner. Jasmine tea, crispy veggie egg rolls, amazing fried rice, lovely service. Went here for dinner last night. Family run restaurant with great service and great food. We started off with some dim sum. Yes! They serve dim sum so you don't have to drive to San Francisco to eat it! Fab! Had some eggflower soup which was tasty. Moved onto the main entrees: beef chow fun (my fav), sesame chicken (way more meat than batter and just the perfect amount of sauce), and shrimp fried rice (big fresh Shrimp!). When you think of Chinese food this goes above and beyond the call of duty. The portions are plentiful, the prices are just right and the service when you eat in is outstanding. They use chicken breasts with most of their chicken dishes and you can actually see the chicken in their fried dishes. The sweet and sour pork dish is made from cubed pork which is moist and tender, not just batter around an undisclosed meat product. This place is one of my favorite Chinese place in the Rohnert Park area. The waitress is always super friendly and helpful. This is one of the two places that have fried sesame red bean balls. Awful!!! Waited a little longer than usual to put our order in.We go two dinner combos. My wife got sweet-and-sour chicken and walnut prawns and both were undercooked. Raw meat! Yuck! When she told the waitress the waitress told her that she just wasn't used to the chicken and the prawns. She argued with her over the raw food so my wife decided to send it back and not get anything at all. My prawns were also under cooked. Again raw food! Then I asked about the egg roll and the Lumpia that were supposed to come with my order and she said they were cooking. We never ended up getting them. I usually have great experiences with this place but tonight when I called for delivery and was told 40 mins, after an hour and 15min wait I call and she said he left 15mins ago, so I say thank you. Well, another 40min goes by and I call annoyed by now, she says she'll call his cell phone and hangs up. Doesn't offer any discount or anything. Great Chinese food. We have been here twice so far, once to eat in the restaurant and once for take-out. They also offer delivery. This is probably going to be our new go-to Chinese restaurant. The food was hot and fresh when we got the take-out. The fried sesame balls ($3 for 3) on the dim sum menu were great, I want to try more of their dim sum offerings. Both times we had the Hot, Spicy and Crispy Szechuan Beef ($10), the beef is super tender with a crispy coating, not too spicy. First of all, there is no good Chinese food around this area, and this one is the best. The price is super reasonable. I like their Hot Garlic Chicken, Mongolian Beef, Mushroom Beef. The taste is awesome. The thing makes them the best in this area, because their food is not as greasy as like other Chinese Restaurant. I hate feeling oil squeeze out from the Sweet n Sour pork from the restaurant that I used to have. Their food is pretty fresh too! It would be your best choice on Chinese Restaurant. Great food and great service! We've gone here on several occasions and the food is always consistently well-prepared. I love the moo shu chicken, chow mein and chicken broccoli. My boyfriend and roommate usually get something spicy, like their hot and sour soup or the pepper chicken. The staff is always friendly and quick, even when the place is packed. This is the most amazing place for vegan Chinese food. They even have sweet and sour fried shiitake mushrooms and they are so good!!!! And the Mongolian tofu is out of this world. We were excited that they had a vegetarian and vegan menu, and that they said they use organic tofu. We order Kung pow tofu and vegetarian hot and sour soup. Soup and sauce tasted ok, but there were absolutely no vegetables at all in either dish. So we ate fried tofu in a syrupy sauce with white rice and broth with tofu in it. If the used vegetables in the dishes I would have given them a four star review, but the complete lack of any veggies in their vegetarian menu items makes this a 2 star place and we won't be back. read more

This is about as good as it gets around the Cotati / Rohnert park area. They offered a variety of the dishes on their regular menu as well as a list of the dim-sum that covers most people's favor, best of all, they made their dim-sums in their own kitchen. The vegetable that they used in their dishes are fresh and the selections are good. Lots of Chinese greens only Chinese restaurants in SF would have. NOT TOO much sauce in most of their dishes but still plenty tasty. They are also very willing to work with their customers that have special needs like less salt and sugar, more sauce, etc. Very friendly service and most people that works there lives around the area so they love to have a quick chat with the table when they have the time. Though, like most mom and pops restaurants they are a bit under staff at times, so when you hit a busy week day night there could be a bit of the wait for them to take your order. Not going back. Arrived at 1pm for lunch. Waitress was cold and expressionless. Hardly took our order correctly. Brought appetizer cold; must have been sitting there a while. Asking anything of her was like you were bothering her... She must have been one of the owners. Bathrooms were horrible and laying on the rail in bathroom was Chinese news paper. Place needs to have the state come inspect it to make sure it is even remotely okay to eat there. When she refilled our sodas, it was always half filled and more ice then soda. We used to come here probably once or twice a month for our Chinese food go to. I believe the ownership has changed and the food quality went with it. I enjoyed this restaurant for many years with my family. Unfortunately I will not return because of an incident that I occurred there. I accidentally knocked something over which was rickety and unstable and could have hurt me. The owner was upset and yelled at me despite my efforts to apologize. I felt badly about the incident and returned a few months later to make amends. Again the owner yelled at me and would not accept my apology. When we first moved to RP - this spot was Happy Garden - the food was excellent. It seems to be a kind of hit and miss with China Chef. I keep hoping. This time was miss - the hot & sour soup tasted like starchy chicken broth, the kung pao chicken was a lot of chicken and very little veggies and not enough spices, and the chow mein noodles in the shrimp chow mein were dry and not cooked enough. But the rice was good :) Was very disappointing. Everyone is very nice and friendly, I would love to be able to recommend it to people, but as I said - it seems to be a hit and miss. read more

I ordered some takeout for the family from here after seeing all the 4 star review, thought I'd give it a shot. The place looked really clean, the staff was really nice, and the food was ready when they said it would be. All of that gets a shining review, sadly the food was just bland and a bit greasy. I was hoping for something really good, but it was just okay. We got the sesame chicken, peppered salt prawns, bbq pork fried rice and the crab cheese puffs. The sesame chicken was okay, it was kind of plain and maybe a little sweet. Different than what I was expecting but not bad. The prawns were fried well, but for a spicy dish it tasted more like the oil it was fried in than anything else. The fried rice had good flavor, but was a lil greasy and the pork was a little fatty. Still probably the best thing we had ordered though. The crab cheese puffs were actually pretty good, the flavor was good and for taking them home they stayed nice and crunchy. In an order of 4 tho I think 2 got all the crab and 2 got all the cream cheese. Not really a complaint they were still quite tasty, and it was very appreciated they sent a whole to go cup full of mustard to go with them. I really would like to of loved this place, the place is nice and convenient, the prices were reasonable, but the food was just kind of bland. We have eaten there twice and liked everything --the rice pancakes with scallions and the potstickers (both the wheat and rice ones) as well as the mixed vegetables (with fresh asparagus!!), chow fun and lo mein noodles.
