This restaurant is located in a shopping center with plenty of parking. I would recommend this restaurant for the delicious food. Every time I have ate here, there has been plenty of pick up orders but not a lot of people dining in. We always choose to dine in and the food always comes out fresh, hot, and quick. We have had the whole restaurant to ourselves two times in a row which is nice for a quiet dinner. The people who work here always are very nice and welcoming, even super funny! Hidden gem for great quality food and taste! I always order the honey walnut prawns and make it a dinner combo. The plate is served with 8 large battered prawns, with a delicious sauce. The batter at this restaurant alone is worth trying. The pork fried rice is very flavorful, smokey, and hard to stop eating. My partner always gets their spicy chicken noodle soup which is packed with veggies. The chicken wings are battered and very crunchy, would highly recommend. I like to write reviews when I detect issues that people should be aware of. It's around 1 o'clock. They have a lunch special that goes till three. So I ordered an item on the lunch special which is about 10 bucks. And then I look at the receipt because I'm getting this to go. And it's 17 bucks. But that includes tax. I guess I should've checked first, that she was going to give me the lunch special. But she charged me the full dinner price. So I asked why is it so much & because I didn't specify that I wanted the lunch not the dinner she gave me the higher costing item. I did request brown rice. She told me that the lunch would not come with brown rice. So I would've had to cancel my order and re-order it again, and probably pay extra for brown rice. I did not want to deal with the hassle. But it also makes one frustrated. When one goes to restaurants and they have two different prices for the same item. And we one goes there during lunch and they charge you for dinner? One good point is the food is good. Normal Chinese American cooking. It's kind of a small portion. It will be what I would expect to get for lunch. So to pay extra for a dinner when I wanted lunch? In my opinion $17 is too much for this. read more

I've been here twice for lunch recently (Fall, 2024). I love this place! The food is absolutely delicious and the service at lunch is quick and outstanding! They are so warm, friendly, and nice. Both times, I ordered one of the lunch specials, and it arrived piping hot. I ordered the sweet and sour prawns, and chose the side of chow mein. The prawns were to die for, it was that good. Perfect flavor, succulent deep fried prawns in a coating, reasonable amount of prawns for a lunch special (5 or 6 medium-sized). I had to go back just two weeks later, the taste was so delicious. The only drawback is that the prices are a bit high for me.The prawn lunch special was $14.99? Other specials were $12.99. And both times, I thought I'd be full from all the food, which includes sweet and sour soup as part of the lunch special. But both times, I was starving at the end of the meal, and had to order takeout pork or chicken fried rice, which I had a few bites of before leaving the restaurant. So my bill was very high for lunch: the first time with 15% tip, around $32, the second time, I ordered brown rice with my meal, but that wasn't enough, so I also ordered the fried rice at the end. So the total with tip was almost $40. From now on, when I go, I must eat a really big breakfast and a morning snack before going, so I don't end up needing to order more than the lunch special. But I will go back, because the food is that good. Next time, I may order something heavier than prawns, such as pork, beef, or chicken, to see if that fills me up better. Also, at lunch, they had almost all takeout business, so the restaurant was quiet, peaceful, no blaring music (a rarity nowadays, for a place that has modest prices), so it would be a great place for a lunch meeting for up to half a dozen people. Sometimes, things that seem pricey at first turn out to be worth the price. Our first experience with food from May Garden was definitely one of those things. The "small" hot and sour soup was not only deliciously bright and balanced. It was also enough for my wife and I to have two servings each. The pot stickers seemed to have overly thick skins -- until we tasted the fillings. (The skins were only really too thick at the pleated folds. Which I still ate and enjoyed.) The combination rice noodles were cooked perfectly. They were also well populated by bits of meat, seafood, and veggies throughout. The steamed pork buns were tasty and fresh-tasting. The beef with mixed vegetables was another nice mix, albeit a bit garlicky for my wife's tastes. And the salt and pepper calamari could have used more salt and pepper, but was crunchy, tender, and not greasy at all. The standout dish we had, though, was the combination egg fu young. I have eaten and loved this dish since my childhood. This version may be the best I've ever had from a restaurant. I could almost imagine the swoons of those who first experienced the dish when it was invented in San Francisco as I enjoyed my first few bites of the May Garden version. Is May Garden expensive? I wanted to try a new chinese food place and already regret it after trying one bite of each dish. The fried prawns look like they bought them at costco. I expected real battered and fried prawns. The Mongolian beef had a strange aroma, taste and chunks of raw jalapeno throughout it. Not appetizing. The fried rice was very mediocre. It just had eggs, beef and eggs and it tastes old. But the chicken chow mein was the worst. The noodles themselves weren't horrible (they weren'tgood either). But i actually vomited in my mouth after chewing the chicken because it literally taste rotten. I just spent over $50 on this food and am currently waiting for a pizza to be ready for pick up probably the worst chinese food I've ever tasted. We do not live on this side of town anymore so we are rarely near May Garden and honestly it hasn't been on our radar in years. However, we were recently near and decided to stop in for dinner. Wow! The restaurant was so clean and the staff was so welcoming. We received excellent service and the food, OMGOODNESS, was very fresh and delicious! We were told it is the same family recipes being used. As we left our 18 year old son couldn't stop talking about how good the food was, and hubby, who rarely gives restaurants a compliment (especially in Santa Rosa) was singing their praises. We will definitely put May Garden on our go-to for Chinese food even if we have to drive a ways to get there. It's worth it! We had the crab Rangoon and pork buns for appetizers, Mongolian beef, orange chicken and garlic noodles. Yum! read more

A friend wanted to go there for their birthday as it was a restaurant they used to like. By the end of the meal, the friend said, "Never again." (In all fairness, I have never been a big fan of this restaurant even back when it first opened. It has always been Americanized Chinese to me...and at this visit, only worse.) When we arrived , the man greeting us assumed we were there for a takeout order rather than actual customers. Since there was only one other party in the restaurant, I guess they assume that. Also, in very large letters at the front is a sign about a 3% surcharge. Since so many restaurants are now charging customers for things that used to be the normal costs of running a business, I asked what that was for. It had to do with credit cards. We were told to sit anywhere and were followed with menus. Man waiting tables was just waiting for the end of his shift and quite annoying. We ordered. It took a while, but the appetizer arrived. Soggy doughy crab rangoon. My friend was disappointed. I had expected it to be less than stellar. And then the wait. It became obvious that the takeout orders were given priority over the customer orders in the restaurant and there was no rhyme or reason to when orders arrived at the tables. According to the man waiting tables, there was only one cook. When the food arrived, the chow mein was basically noodles with a few shreds of cabbage and carrot and some chicken. My friend had ordered sweet and sour pork. Pork was good, but only three pieces of carrot, 2 pieces of green pepper, a few pieces of pineapple and some onion. My friend commented the size of the order was half what it used to be. My Mongolian beef was unlike any Mongolian beef I have ever had or had ever made. Never had it made with jalapenos and liberally sprinkled with black pepper. The waiter came over and commented on why we weren't eating it. When I told him it wasn't very good and the Mongolian beef was not really Mongolian beef, he just walked away. Why ask if you aren't going to satisfy the customer?! His relief came and he left. His relief brought the bill. I paid in cash. $70.00 for dinner and you leave disappointed. The worst part was my friend was disappointed on his birthday. So never again May Garden. (Yesterday, I took my friend to a Chinese restaurant I like a lot to make up for the bad experience. My friend really enjoyed it so we toasted to a happy birthday just a few days late. And, my friend has a new favorite Chinese restaurant that cost less and was more good food than we could eat in one sitting.) read more

I choose to go to May Garden after reading the great reviews. But I was disappointed in some of the dishes we ordered. The mu su veggies looked over cooked at it was somewhat of a mush when eaten and the pancake was not served moist so it fell apart when rolled. Usually the pancake is served in a special container to keep it warm and easy to work with when filling. The coconut shrimp had a lot of sauce on the plate and the shrimp was also over cooked. Unfortunately we threw all of the food we ordered away. My vegetable chow fun only had bok choy and chow fun noodles. It tasted fishy. I've had vegetable chow fun at multiple restaurants and this was just terrible. I'm a vegetarian so the fact my food tasted "fishy" it killed my appetite. Very disappointed, I ordered 2- Steamed Rice , Homemade Egg Rolls, Mixed Vegetables and General Tong Chicken plus selected to make it a Combination Dinner (egg roll, hot and sour soup, and personal pork fried rice) for an additional $6.99. none of the combination part was included in the bag (Strike 1) it does not say anyplace on their website that when you order chicken it will be less because they place it on a bed of broccoli ( about 1/4 broccoli 3/4 chicken) ( strike 2). I order 2 steamed white rice and only receive 1. They used to have the best moo goo gaypan and it was the only place I ever went for it. Went in and now it's a brown sauce and it tastes like something completely different. When I called in my order recently, the woman gave me the total and then said, "The VISA machine adds $1.53 processing fee. Is that OK?" to which I said, "Nope. Cancel my order." Nice try--the machine doesn't add a processing fee, the business owner does. In my opinion, credit card fees are the cost of doing business and not my cost, either. The food here is average but they are in my neighborhood and I used to order from there about three times a month. I won't be giving them my business until they stop this egregious practice. Lets just say "Bad Decision" Portions are alot smaller than any other place around and it's either the same price or higher ??? Got the Salt n Pepper Calamari (tasted NO salt or pepper) and there was exactly 9 rings of Calamari "ARE YOU SERIOUS" tasted like the oil it was cooked in. A waste of $10 basically. Obvious they sprinkled it on after cooking it, pepper was visual but tasted nothing. I could recommend 3-4 other places where the portions double May Garden's - at the same price. The food is way over priced for what you get. The sweet and sour chicken or any battered meat is mostly batter with a tiny piece of meat in it. It's not very good. I prefer more meat then batter.
