If you're looking for a restaurant that serves Americanized Chinese food that delivers in a small town, then this is the place for you. However, don't expect anything on the level of Nom Wah Tea Parlor (New York City) or Cozy Inn (Janesville, Wisconsin). This is small town Michigan. I decided to stop in and have lunch inside the restaurant, as I was craving Chinese food, so I decided to try this place out. I've heard both pro and con about China City. Several of my coworkers like it, while a few friends of mine who are ABC say this place is a disgrace. I decided to play it safe, and I ordered "Shrimp Chop Suey" as it's pretty tame, and you can't really screw it up. I soon learned that was not the case here. The vegetables were fresh, but the fried rice left a lot to be desired. It was too mushy and overcooked. Meanwhile, the shrimp was okay, but now the strange part, there was a lot of chicken included that I didn't order, which gave the whole entrée a bizarre flavor profile. Quite honestly, it tasted like it had been cooked a few days earlier. Maybe it's their idea of surf and turf? The service is what you would expect from restaurant of this caliber. The liquid refreshments come in a can or a two-liter bottle. If I ever order from China City again, I will specify white steamed rice. read more

Husband and I tired this place tonight for the first time, we choose it because it was the highest rating close to home so why not. Welp got a hair in my food. Husband called to get a refund lady over the phone got rude and loud to the point where I just grabbed the phone from my husband and asked why we couldnt recieved refund, her attitude changed real quick. Then she still refused and mentioned they can only exchange. I told them I didn't want the food anymore. I've worked in food service this shouldnt happen and if it does there are so many chances to catch it before this point. I straight up told her I will not be returning she hung up. Save your money. If their sloppy enough to let hair get in your food then a bunch of other health code violations are also going on. Hair ties, hair nets, hats. Use them!! Ordered from here and it arrived wrong. Called back and spoke with A Jessica. Thru out our entire conversation all she kept repeating was that she repeated our order back, which she never did. She was extremely rude and refused to correct the issue. Took our number down and said a manager would be calling back in 20 minutes. It's been over an hour now. Called back, and they had the nerve to hang up on us, not once but 4 times! What food I did end up with was nasty, overcooked and cold by the time I got off the phone. $35 wasted on pure garbage and even got treated like garbage in the process. The best thing about this place is they deliver. That means a lot in a place like Belleville. You may wait half the night on your delivery but it beats the usual pizza so it is still worth a try. The prices are pretty reasonable too. The food here is merely ok. Nothing you are going to wax poetically about to others but basic Americanized Chinese things that will make you reasonably happy. The staff is friendly enough and the place seems clean. If you want to sit and eat it is serviceable but hardly what I would call restaurant, more like a table to feast on carryout. Expect the usual items done reasonably well and then to forget it almost as soon as it is gone. I would advise skipping the pan fried pork dumplings though, just not a fave. Singapore rice noodles are always safe. read more

The fried rice is yellow. We prefer Asian Gardens, but they were closed for Independence weekend. My daughter and I were just searching for takeout on our way home, and this was open. The food was bland. My Mongolian beef didn't have enough green onions and zero crunchy noodles, and the fried rice was yellow, not saffron yellow either, and since it didn't have much flavor, I would say neither turmeric nor mustard neither. My daughter's mushu pork was served with flour tortillas, not the traditional flatbread or pancake. First mistake, all the food was bad, cooked in old grease, had a burned tasted that I would not serve to my little Angle. I ordered the "sauce" on the side. What I got a an extraordinary THICK, flavorless gravy. Their eggrolls are chicken not pork. Ok, I'll try it. The filing for the eggroll was like a mashed up concoction of chicken with the eggroll fillings. Gross! The only slightly redeeming dish was the fried dumplings and sauce. That was passable. As much as I wanted to not only find a new favorite Chinese restaurant in town I was elated when I heard that they deliver. We ordered a General Chicken dinner with sauce on side and an Almond Chicken dinner regular way (no side sauce). Delivery arrived about 15 minutes before stated time and driver was extremely pleasant. (Bonus star) Almond Chix had no sauce and General Chix did gave a bowl of sauce to accompany it as well. (Honest mistake) The General meat was, I think, boneless thigh meat although it was mostly cartilage. The Almond meat was breast but very tough and extremely over salted. Not sure which kind of rice I had. At first I tough the white chunks were scrambled egg. Nope. Then I thought perhaps shrimp. Nope. Another bite. Tofu maybe. Maybe. A lot of the kernels were overly hard as if the rice had been sitting in a steam table for a long time. The egg roll??? Well, the egg roll was delicious. Full of cabbage and sprouts. In spite of my poor review I will probably give them another try. I'll simply order a couple of egg rolls and some soup. read more

I've really given up on Chinese food around here since Asian garden closed. I decided to give China city a try and I was disappointed as expected. Sesame chicken was dark and chewy, maybe thigh meat was used instead of breast? The sauce was also flavorless. Crab Rangoon is basically deep fried cream cheese, no crab. Rice is soggy and over cooked. Maybe there are better things on the menu but I get the impression that the people who like this place are those who dont season food properly. Ehh.. yuck. Due to the amazing construction going on Belleville Rd, we stopped in here for carry out instead of heading to Asian Gardens. I regretted that choice. The inside is nothing to write home about, they appear to be all carry out/delivery orders. We were probably one of their first orders of the day. The rice that came with our meal was just...not good. As another Yelper had mentioned, my chicken that had breading on it was mostly dark meat with lots of fat on the pieces. The flavor of the General Tso sauce was tasty, but the chicken itself was not. The eggroll also left a lot to be desired. I don't even think it really had anything in it, and the taste was just off somehow. My food was cooked fresh, so I give them that- but I definitely won't be back. read more

China City is another Chinese-American restaurant that does most of their business with take-away and delivery, but they do have seating. Most of their menu is unsurprising but everything we've tried has been very good. The vegetables are fresh and crispy. Spicy food (like szechuan style or kung pao) could be hotter (and probably would be if we asked) but isn't "hot for hotness' sake", it's actually well spiced with flavor. Deep fried foods such as shrimp toast are not overly greasy. They take special requests (ex. "no peas") in stride. The whole place is clean. It's the type of restaurant with a counter and the kitchen right behind so you can see your food cooked freshly right in front of you while you wait. The prices are reasonable -- you can get a lunch combo (food + fried rice) for about $5-6, a regular combo (food + fried rice + egg roll) for about $6-7. Many things come in large or small sizes letting you mix and match your own meal. read more

Despite reading several poor reviews I decided to try the food any way. I was super hungry and they delivered, so I said well let's give it a shot. I was wrong. My order consisted of Crab Rangoon, Sweet and Sour Chicken, and the Sesame Chicken Combo ( which comes with pork fried rice and an "egg roll". Starting with the Crab Rangoon, the size was incredibly small for what one would receive from another establishment. Even with their small size the Rangoon was not cooked through, it had no evidence of being fried, my best guess it was thrown into an oven or under a "salamander". I decided to tear one open when I bit into one but didn't taste anything, there was an extremely thin layer of spread, so thin in fact it was practically nonexistent. I was extremely disappointed in what was supposed to be my treat. My egg roll was extremely little, I would have called it a mini, it only took three small bites to consume it in its entirety. Moving into my meal I had higher hopes however I was yet again disappointed. My Sesame Chicken was also a disappointment to my palette as well. While the size of the order was large, it truly contained mainly rice. What wasn't rice was more of a mound of gelatinous covered, excessively dry, chicken. The rice portion of this combo was pork fried rice and was not very pleasing. The rice was just done and the vegetables were hardly steamed, I could hear them crunch as I chewed. The pork in the rice was also overly done and was very tough. While this meal was a disappointment the quality of the chicken in the sweet and sour was better but still not quality product. The exterior was not crisp but the chicken was cooked much better. However, the sweet and sour red sauce was extremely watered down, it rolled off my knife as if I put my knife into a glass of water. Overall this experience was as previous reviews warned. I would not recommend this establishment to anyone despite the convenience of delivery, the quality is subpar at best and not worth the extremely long wait or the money. :) read more

This visit today was not very good, with a sub-par orange chicken and nearly pork-less pork egg roll. Come-on, I want to see actual chunks of pork in my egg roll, not Bacos® hiding in a mound of cabbage. The Orange Chicken tasted alright but was made with the fattiest pieces of dark meat chicken available. Somehow I guess breading means an excuse to use the leftover parts. So i came here explicitly because of David K's 5 star review mentioning new ownership. I'm glad i did, but i wouldn't give this place 5 stars -- not on first shot, anyway. If i could add a 1/2 star, i would. Perhaps a later review after more visits will come from me, at this point i am interested enough to want to try again. Read on for details. It was 9pm on a thursday, just after Christmas that my date and i decided to try this place. We ordered by phone and picked it up, it was a very easy ordering experience and i made sure to mention that i had never been since the ownership changed when placing my order, which might have made the person at the shop a little more friendly than normal and eager to explain options. It was ready in 10 minutes, very hot in the bag, and still very warm by the time we ate it. Both orders were Great size for the price, we both ordered dinner combos which gets you the entree, an eggroll or soup, and fried rice for around 8 bucks for what we both ordered. There might have been a choice between veggie fried and chicken fried rice for the dinners, but i was not given an option and didn't inquire. My order was for General Tso's Chicken Dinner Combo, the basic litmus of any decent Chinese/American joint. Note that every other place in Belleville has failed this simple test -- not the case here. The Tso's was more than meh, but not stellar. It had the hallmark of being in a warmer all day, and granted i did order an hour before closing time but regardless of when you order something, there is an expectation of very-freshly made everything. Good breading on the chicken, the right amount of peppers, ordered spicy and it wasn't Hunan-hot, but it was Cantonese-hot, very passable. The broccoli was there but overall just 4 pieces of it, a little light if you ask me. Thankfully those pieces were not sitting in the sauce all day, still crisp and fresh tasting. Great eggroll too, obviously made in house with thin wonton shells that were very crispy. Options for those were veggie or chicken, i went chicken eggroll. The fried rice features very large shredded pieces of chicken and egg, moreso than most places that dice the chicken or pork. Good amount of onions in it too. Missing though was the all-important carrots and underrepresented was the peas in the rice, if it was there it was so small i couldn't see it. Overall with the Tso's I can only imagine that it can be better if the chicken itself had a bit more sauce to it, and while there were some bits that were still crispy, the bulk of it had that semi-mush to it and the sauce reduced to super-thick glaze for the most part, like it is prepared and put together early in the day and left on high heat until they close or run out. I'll have it again when the craving comes, but next time i'll be trying something not breaded and fried and see how that turns out. My date's order was the Almond Chicken. She is just as particular as i am with chinese food, with expectations for flavor, freshness and presentation. Her first impression was "they didn't give me enough soup!" and indeed, the soup container was a large one, probably a pint, that was 1/3 of the way full. I guess if you're comparing the cost of an eggroll to the soup, it probably was a small bowl full, and an eggroll goes for $1.20 so there ya go. It was very good Egg Drop soup, which might've only made her complaint more pointy. The Almond Chicken was thankfully abundant, as was the gravy which came in the same soup container, and actually with more gravy than soup. The chicken, which i also tried and agree, was very crispy and fresh tasting, with a smallish hint of almond flavor and darker gravy than i usually see. She thought the gravy was lacking flavor, but i felt that it was good. She gave her meal a 3, i gave mine a 3.5. My score is the only one i'm really putting into consideration for this review though. Overall i'll definitely be back. They do have a smallish dine-in area, i'm thinking i might try to eat in to see if the portions differ and whatnot. Next up will be Pepper Steak. I have given China City a try on at least 3 occasions. Attempting a different item each time. The positives are the food is made fresh. The drawbacks remain (each time I ate there) that food is bland and basically average. There just isn't anything about this place that has me wanting to come back or desiring their food. read more
