This is a good place to order Chinese food and pick it up to take home. I have never eaten inside. There are a handful of booths. Many times during the school year you will see the owners' children sitting at a booth or 2 doing their homework. This does not bother me at all and is actually rather charming. Very well-behaved kids. Back to the food. I almost always order the shrimp with peppers and onions. It is served with a side of white rice. The shrimp is always cooked perfectly ... Not over or underdone. Many times we order the Family Meal which allows you to choose 4 good-sized portions from a pretty extensive list of options. My son enjoys the General Tso's chicken combo which comes with pork fried rice and an egg roll. The menu states it is spicy, and it does have a little heat to it, but not what you would normally consider truly spicy. Which is perfect for him. The egg rolls are good. We also usually get the wonton soup. We scoop the wontons out and eat them with our meals. We don't care for the broth and that ends up being thrown out. But the wontons are generally very good. One thing worth noting that I like a lot is the fact that their kitchen is right behind the counter. You can watch them prepare the food. The owners are very friendly, as are their children. We enjoy going here for take-out. read more

We were in the area staying across the bridge from town and decided to grab some takeout grub. General Tso's tofu was fine, but not spicy as the menu stated. Simple diced, fried tofu in a sweet red sauce. Snow peas and mixed vegetables were simply OK. Vegetable lo mein was run-of-the-mill...nothing special. This joint had food that we could get back in our home town, which I suppose is a good thing since Sidney, NY is a bit off the radar for us. Average stuff here. read more

China City is the Sidney Chinese restaurant that's *not* in an old Burger King building. This is a good thing. It's fine. Nothing crazy special. It is what it is. Mostly a takeout place -- the inside lacks charm and comfort. Most things taste good. Some items are a little too salty. I like the spicy Triple Delight (although it's not that spicy). The chow mein is sort of yucky. Sometimes the chicken fingers are overdone. Some of the special items are an eensy bit pricey for what they are -- over $10, I mean. But sometimes the specials are totes worth a glance because they have crazy names - and charmingly misspelled descriptions. Like Buddha Jumped Over the Wall. There's some mad narrative that goes along with that, and I would quote it if I had the menu in front of me. They always say to pick up the items in 15 minutes, but if it's a weekend, wait extra time before getting your food. And if you spend a strange amount - like $23, then you can get, like, a free 2-liter bottle of Dr. Thunder or faux-Coke, etc. read more

We absolutely love China City, and we've found it to be the best Chinese restaurant in the local area. We love everything we've had on the menu. We've eaten in once, and the family was very attentive to our needs and were very pleasant and courteous. The food portions were very large, and we ended up needing to bring most of it home with us! Most frequently we get take-out from China City on the way home, and food is always done quick and it's always consistent in how excellent it tastes. We've never had a bad experience with their food. We love the little extras that they throw in with the order on occasion - soups, donuts, etc. The family is always pleasant when we come in the restaurant. read more

I don't know why the other review is a 2/5, considering the person seems to like the place. I've tried almost every (maybe EVERY) Chinese restaurant in the Oneonta/Norwich/Sidney triangle, and this one is the best by far. It's not a fancy, sit-down place, but most Chinese restaurants aren't. I generally want to take mine to-go anyway. They do have a few tables if you want to eat there, but that's clearly not their main business. I assume it's the owners that I see every time I'm there, and they've always been very nice and polite. It's not the best Chinese food I've ever had, but it is very good, especially compared to the other options in the area. The prices are pretty standard for a Chinese restaurant of this type (not sit down), and the portions are large. read more

Stopped in for lunch at about 1:30. As we were about half way finished with our food, two employees came into the small dining area and proceeded to eat their lunch. I could care less an employee sits down to eat. One of the employees had soup or a bowl of ramen and proceeded to suck the life out of whatever utensil he was using. It was so loud and obnoxious, the girl I was with pretty much ran out the door. Never have I ever heard someone slurp and suck so loud and could care less that we were trying to enjoy a meal we paid for. Never again. read more
