Before you read my tiny, short novel here, I will preface that this review is just for a soup :) My husband and I have been on a hot and sour soup kick lately--I'm talking three weeks straight of craving it. It started with me, but now he's fully on board, and we're officially on the hunt for "the best hot and sour soup" in the suburbs. I might be a bit of an Asian soup snob, but when I go to an Asian restaurant, I can judge a lot about the authenticity of the cuisine based on their soups. Soups can be one of the simplest dishes to make, but they're also easy to overlook. To me, if a place puts care into their soups, they'll likely put that same care into their entrées. With Asian soups especially, the tiniest tweaks make a big difference in flavor. If you love Tom Yum or pho, you know exactly what I mean--it's all about the flavor profile. And the same goes for a good old hot and sour soup... and oh my--I think I found the one tonight. I could have easily finished the entire quart in one sitting (I showed some restraint... barely). My husband gave it a thumbs up, and my oldest loved the kick and went back for seconds. Safe to say--we'll be back for more on our next takeout night. Definitely worth the $7.73 (tax included). Where it hit all the right notes: * Fresh bamboo shoots, mushrooms, wood ear mushrooms (my favorite), eggs, carrots, and tofu * Perfect consistency (not too thick, not too watery) * Balanced flavor (not overly sour or flat) * Real chili peppers for heat (not just a heavy hand of black pepper) My favorite detail: The vegetables were actually cut into bite-sized pieces --not giant chunks--and everything was properly cooked and tender. I've been to places where the carrots are so crunchy, it feels like they came straight out of the ground! We've ordered takeout from here several times and haven't had a bad experience yet. I just haven't been intentional about remembering what I ordered--until now. This soup officially has me paying attention, and I'll definitely be back to try more of their entrées (and take notes this time!). I managed to get a picture of the remaining 30% of my soup where I had to tilt the carton just to get the photo. It was all eaten too fast before I could take a picture. Pickup was smooth and easy. I was able to pay with a credit card even for a small order (under $10). They also have a wall of gift items for sale, which looked interesting. There are a few tables and chairs if you want to sit while you wait (or maybe even eat there) but it definitely feels more like a takeout-focused spot. Based on the neon signage outside, it looks like they offer delivery as well. Tip: With small businesses like this one, they aren't married to their hours. When I called on a Wednesday to ask about their closing time, they told me it was 8:45 PM. However, when I arrived, the sign on the door listed their closing time as 9:00 PM. We picked up well ahead, but I've also seen Google reviews mentioning that they may close early, so just keep that in mind--especially if you're placing an order or calling close to closing time. read more

Absolutely not edible. $62 for dinner that was delivered and is now in the garbage. Told them to have the delivery guy come back, and was told no. Was told that I could bring it back to them. Home Glazed Walnut Shrimp was on lettuce. Nothing mentioned on the menu about that. Empress Chicken had mushrooms in it. Again, not on the menu & Husband is allergic to mushrooms. Crab Rangoon was sweet, but mush. Manager was extremely rude on the phone. Didn't seem to care when I mentioned I would leave a bad review. read more

This was my first time ordering China Cook and, although there was some disappointment in the actual ordering and delivery, I did enjoy the food. I ordered for a large group and I personally got the sesame chicken lunch special. It was a pretty generous portion of meat, not overcooked - which happens a lot at Chinese restaurants, and there was a perfect balance of sweet and tangy in the flavorful sauce. The lunch special also came with an egg roll and 12oz can of soda, all for $7.75. Fresh and yummy for a good price. Now for the not so great part. I placed my order online through the China Cook website. I ordered 5 orange chicken lunch specials for 5 different people. Some wanted spicy, some mild, some wanted fried rice and some wanted streamed rice. You can easily specify which option you want on the site. The problem came when I realized that it just lumped all the orange chicken orders in one group... 5 orange chicken, all medium spicy, all fried rice. Also you are not able specify which soda you want, they just send whatever. Also the delivery took about an hour and a half, mostly because the driver kept getting lost. I know people make mistakes, GPS isn't perfect, etc. The restaurant and the driver did call me multiple times to verify address and they were very kind but it was all just kind of a bummer. Despite these problems I would still go back, call in my order and pick up only because the food was pretty good standard Chinese food and sometimes you just need Chinese food! read more

The food was meh. We always go to the same Chinese restaurant but it doesn't open up until 4:30 so we tried China Cook. It was not horrible but not the best. Also none of the batter sticks to the chicken it so it was just little naked chicken in sauce. read more

This is our Chinese delivery go-to! We're veg, so I can't speak on the meats, but China Cook's vegetables are fresh and crisp every time, delivery times are great, orders are always 100% correct, tofu/bean curd is cooked perfectly and Szechuan sauce is to die for! Be sure to order a side of their yummy chili oil. I only give four stars, because (a) they're a bit pricy and (b) it is not clear on the menu which items are vegetarian and which ones are not. I really wish their hot and sour soup was vegetarian, but I am at least really happy that they are always able to tell us on the phone which items are vegetarian and which are not. I really don't know where they went wrong but it's insane how much has changed with this restaurant. I went to order a Hot and Spicy Shredded Beef lunch special for over 8 dollars which includes plain friend rice and an egg roll. Typically, when you order from a Chinese restaurant and it's a lunch special, you tend to have plenty leftover for another entire meal. However, the food not only lacked quantity but quality. They should rename the meal "Hot and Spicy Onions with Beef." I've added a photo of how much onions are in a lunch portion of hot and shredded beef. They also added plain fried rice while most other Chinese restaurant provide you with at least chicken fried rice, or rice with some other kind of meat. They didn't even add egg or bean sprout or green onions to the fried rice...just oil and soy sauce. I ate all 5 pieces of beef with their bland fried rice and tossed the rest away. Women running the ordering desk was friendly and helped me find thing on the menu. Chicken Fried Rice was ok. It was a little bland, but had plenty of white meat chicken. Chicken Wings were excellent. They were cooked well, juicy and had a good flavor. Chicken Chop Suey was ok. It was a little bland. I think there was zucchini in it, which I thought was odd for Chop Suey. It did have a good amount of white meat chicken. I would return in the future. read more

This is a take-out/delivery place and the people here are very friendly and it's great take-out Chinese food. They are also super-fast! Even with delivery it gets to our place in 10 - 15 minutes. If you like sweet and sour sauce ask for extra packets, they only give you a few. On the flip side, they tend to give too many soy sauce packets in my opinion. DO NOT EAT HERE! When you order on-line and they email you the receipt, and then they charge you more when you pick up your order, that is just horrible customer service. The guy argued with me saying because my on-line order added pineapple and that price isn't listed on their site, they add the cost but don't add it to the receipt. What?! I didn't change my order b4 they emailed me the receipt. The worst part is the guy was upset with me (even though I paid the extra) and kept arguing as I walked out the door. Who does that? A black bug came crawling out of my rice this evening. When I called to complain I was told they didn't know where it came from. After having to explain again that it came out of my food I was told they could refund the item with the issue. I insisted that my complete order needed to be refunded and was told that was fine but that I had to drive back for the refund! I drove back there and was greeted with zero apology but with attitude instead. I was first only refunded for the rice and then the balance after having to insist again. Is everyone eating crazy pills? China Cook is the goddamn BOMB. Decent Chinese food outside of the city limits is a rarity. How fortuitous, then, that I have TWO awesome Chinese joints within delivery range of me? If you guessed DAMN fortuitous then you guessed correctly! China Cook could steam some styrofoam and serve it on a bed of broken glass and I'd eat it with relish. They could bring me empty boxes that just SMELL like their food and I'd dine with glee. China Cook is some of the best Chinese food I've had, burbs or otherwise. Firstly, their Mongolian Beef/Chicken comes with those crunchy little white noodles and anyone that's ever read a Chinese food Yelp of mine knows that's worth 5 stars all by itself, but that's not all China Cook does well. Their customer service is specta-frickin-cular. They actually give a crap about their customers and it shows both in the food as well as how fast and hot the food gets to us. They've given us free egg rolls in the past, they also gave us a freakin' wall calendar for the Chinese New Year. These things cost them virtually nothing but it's gotten them hundreds of dollars in business that might've gone elsewhere. Aside from the Mongolian factor, I can personally recommend the Pineapple Chicken with its sweet, creamy sauce and succulent pineapple, the Four Seasons special, the Lucky 7 special as well as the Honey Glazed Walnut Shrimp - all really delicious. They're located off Irving Park Road, tons of parking and really no space to eat there so order carryout or delivery and you'll thank me. China Cook - way better than your typical Chinese and a frickin GEM here in the Northwest burbs. read more

Always a good time at China Cook! I have only had it delivered, so I can't comment on it's actual restaurant, but I have never had a bad experience! The food is always delicious and prompt. The people delivering are always really nice and understanding (it's hard to find my house!). The people who answer the phone are helpful and knowledgeable about what they think would be too spicy for me (I am so lame that I think the mild sauce at taco bell is too hot! *hangs head in shame*). The food has always arrived piping hot--the eggroll I had delivered yesterday was so fresh and hot that I couldn't even eat ir right away because of all the steam!! And the donuts are delicious!! Also, I ordered at 12:30 yesterday and was told it would be 30 minutes. Less than 20 minutes later, my delicious food arrived--that's quick service! We called on a Sunday at 1:00pm to place an order for delvery to Bartlett. The woman who answered had the thick accent like everyone said but seemed to understand me. She wanted to be careful about taking down our delivery address and placed the driver on the phone to write it down. The bargain: We could order the $5.50 lunch special includes rice ( plain or fried), an egg roll and can of soda. We ordered Chicken Egg Foo Young Sweet and Sour Chicken Chicken Chop Suey everything was properly cooked. I want to note that one reviewer stated his vegetables were cut too big. Mine appeared cut smaller like slaw style with the carrots. Broccoli was small and edible everything was perfectly cut. everything was well flavored and delicious. The delivery: The order arrived at 1:45. Delievry driver was courteous It was cold outside (28 degrees). I note this because another reviewer noted waiting an hour for delivery. I'll have to agree. This is one of the better chinese take-out places in Streamwood. I haven't had any others, but China Cook is very tasty. I've had their egg rolls which are actually not too bad, but I'm sure could be a bit better. Spring Rolls are actually a lot better executed. Being filipino, you get to liking spring rolls. Ahh lumpia! Ahem, anyway I digress(btw, I am a Chicago born filipino, so, I can't speak tagalog. :)) Their fried rice is also good. My children love eating it. Their General Tso's chicken is awesome it is not too overly laden with the sauce and the lightly coated chicken is still a bit crisp to the bite. China Cook's Lo Mein is also very flavorful everything tastes fresh and I will agree with Paul O. as they cook with a LOT of onions. It was my first time at this place, the girl taking my order was rude. She did not tell us how long the order will take she even got the order wrong. I ordered one egg roll for $1.25 and I ended up getting 2 for $2.00. 75cents is not a big deal but the point is that we did not order it so as far a service, this place gets one star. I was torn between rating this place a 1 or 2 for the fact that the service was awful but a few of the dishes we ordered were not that bad. First off, a few friends and I were starving and my girlfriend happen to have a menu from this place. Since we were craving Chineese and the prices seemed decent, we went with China Cook. Shrimp Egg Foo Young- Rate 3/5 Crab Rangoon- 1/5 Beef n Broccoli- 4/5 Orange Chicken- 2/5 Egg Rolls- 1/5 First off, I can hardly understand the lady taking our order. I specifically asked for a few drinks and extra soy and sweet n sour sauce which we did not get but since they felt that they didn't charge for it, there was NO PROBLEM. I immediatly called back once I realized our drinks were missing and we recieved 1 soy sauce and 2 sweet n sour packets. Instead of sending the driver back ASAP without charge, the lady I spoke to again with the broken English said they not ony woud charge us for the pop(their mistake), but they would be adding another delivery charge and would take almost a half hour because it was a busy Friday night. If you plan on ordering from here, BE READY FOR A HASSLE. Expect to repeat your order 3 times and expect your order to be wrong.
