Late to the Five Spice party, but I'm glad to have arrived late than never. I'm usually not a fan of restaurants that serve the foods of various Asian countries under one roof, but Five Spice is an exception. No matter the order, all the food comes out delicious, hot, and fast. They have THE BEST pot stickers (if you like a thick wonton), and though tofu is not top of the list of my orders at other places, I somehow always end up ordering the mapo tofu every time I'm here. The servers are also super efficient and kind, and the overall vibe is very cozy and comfort foods and like I'm being taken care of by family members. The restaurant is also attached to a boba tea shop that also has a wide selection of drinkable yums, so there's literally something for everyone. Cost is on-par as well. Lastly, being able to support local is always a plus. read more

My review is because they offer Spicy Boiled Beef on their menu! I don't come across it often. Maybe I don't get out as much? Either way, I loved it! There was also a garlic pepper shrimp that was really good. We had Egg rolls, Crab Rangoons, Edamame and Beef fried rice. Everything was really good. It's also a nice sit down spot. I've been in the area for about 9 years and have never given it a try. I'm glad I did because I will definitely be going back for the Mapo Tofu! I didn't try it but it's also a dish that I enjoy. They also serve Boba Teas. I had green tea to go with my meal. I was happy that it was not a teabag in a cup. I was given a nice little tea kettle with a filter so you could see the tea leaves/contents. I had a pleasant experience. Christina was our server and she was great! She was very attentive and checked up on us frequently. She took time to answer any questions about our meals and dishes. We also had an older male server. It's so hard to find good old Chinese food. I just can't get enough of this place. All the basic Chinese items are delicious. Our favorite is the dynamite shrimp and any of the fried rices, especially the Malaysian one. I also love their Mongolian beef, we get it every time. We tried to get something non-basic like some eggplant dish and it wasn't very good. Service is fast and the restaurant ambiance is really nice. They have a back room that can seat like 20 people. We used it for my brother's birthday. Definitely recommend this restaurant. read more

This is hands down the best Chinese food I've had in the area. The Malaysian steak fried rice was absolutely huge and delicious. The steak was tender and peppery and the rice had this delicious buttery flavor. I also got egg rolls and gyoza which were perfectly cooked and fresh. Will be ordering here again soon! read more

I wanted this place to be good since our area has horrible Chinese food (except for 8000 mile $$$$,) but this place was the most bland, doughy, honestly gross food I've experienced in any restaurant. Let's start with their egg roles. Undercooked and pasty pre digested pork paste with barely a veg in sight. I ordered beef lomein and if it weren't for the pepper steak I ordered, there would have been ZERO flavor. I've never had bad beef LM, but I can't say that anymore. The won ton soup was more of the same with more dough than anything (with that pork paste) and then the dumplings..UGH. Burnt with 3/4 dough and hard slivers of pork (I gave it to my dog.) So, no I do t recommend this place. Zero stars. read more

I'm surprised I haven't left a review yet considering that I've been here quite a few times! It's a very modern-decorated restaurant. When you walk in, there's a boba store built-in. I've gotten the boba here a few times. I've had better. The tea flavor could be more prominent. The food here on the whole is very good. We always get the dry chili chicken and it never disappoints. I think the other dishes are hit or miss depending on the day. I've had really good salt and pepper tofu but also just mediocre salt and pepper tofu. Most recently, we noticed it didn't come with jalapeños like it normally does. The eggplant dish is also hit or miss - this most recent time wasn't as flavorful as in the past. I'll still come back though. It's a pretty solid Chinese restaurant in the suburbs. read more

Amazing gem in Roselle. The menu has many choices including gluten free, vegetarian, vegan, lactose free, and for us carnivores. Drink menu has sake, handcrafted beer, wines, cocktails, bottled beer, teasing, bubble teas and more. We started with egg rolls and pancake scallion bites. They provide four sauces! My favorite is the chili oil, but there is also ginger, Wasabi and sweet sauce. All made in house. Entrees were sesame peanut noodles and Mongolian beef. So good. The seafood options look great. Decided to check out this spot with some friends. Overall location is nice and traffic isn't crazy. By reading the reviews I assumed the earlier the better. We went around 4:00 and there was maybe one other couple in there. Could mean good or bad but reviews are high so I assumed just not a popular time. Dynamite Shrimp- 5/10, they weren't giving that spicy mayo or any spice really. The texture was throwing me off because there was a crunch but then again a lot of sauce. Shrimp Fried Rice- 9/10, little on the fry side but with some soy sauce it was perfect. The shrimp were very tiny which was good and they were cooked well. Liked the fried egg in it as well I think there was more than usual. Mongolian Combo- (medium spice) 7/10, there were some good flavors there within the chicken, shrimp and beef which is what is included in the combo. Overall vegetables were cooked really well and sauce was nice. I feel like all of them were just missing something to make it pop really. Came with white rice which tasted like your good white rice 10/10. Garden Seasonal vegetables combo- (medium spice) 8/10, a little better than the mongolian had more of that flavor we were looking for. Vegetables were cooked very good and the little corn was amazing and just everything went well together. White rice also came with and was good Kungpao combo-(very spicy), 9/10, didn't try this one myself personally because it had peanuts in it but heard good things. The spice really made the dish better and the chicken, beef and shrimp all made it work. The vegetables in your usual kungpao all went well and seasoning was good. White rice 10/10. Horchata bubble tea-6/10 the horchata flavor was good i'd say a little watered down but the tapioca was throwing me off just not the usual i get. Nothing wrong with the actual bar though. I heard a lot about how this restaurant is a rebranding of Silver Lake Chinese food. They did have w a Silver Lake menu and one of the staffers said it's a rebranding of Silver Lake, so I guess it's true. It's significantly more upscale than Silver Lake but the people are just as nice. Personally, I think the food is better. I was happy my husband suggested we try it. I love the updated decor. We were in the area and had a craving for ramen. This one was less then a half of a mile from an event we were working, so of course we were going to try this place out. We used the Yelp wait list feature but the person who met us at the door did not know what we were talking about. He seated us and we just cancelled the wait list. (There was no wait at all which was nice) The restaurant is very clean and nicely decorated. A great place to meet a friend for a meal! They have lots of different food items but my husband and I both ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen for dinner. My husband ordered a Diet Coke. It was served in a can with a side glass of ice. My husband really prefers fountain drinks because you normally get free refills. The cost was $1.50 which is not too bad but we will remember this for next time. I ordered an unsweetened iced tea and the cost was $2.85. There are free refills (I made sure I had one) it tasted great and was not bitter at all. The ramen was a good size and the presentation was beautiful, I loved the nori on one side of the bowl, this is by far the best looking ramen we have ever ordered however the flavor was very bland. I am not saying this in a negative manner because It is perfect for someone who is on a low sodium diet or someone who has issues with food additives. You can tell they use fresh ingredients. Yes, I could have requested some sriracha but it was not horrible just not as flavorful as we were expecting so I did not. About half way through eating the broth you could taste a light pleasant ginger taste in the broth. I liked it but my husband didn't. I am hoping we will be back, but next time we will try something else on the menu. We were too full for dessert but the pictures on the front door of the ice cream in the waffle cones looks so yummy! Just ate at Five Spice for the first time. Had a bit of sticker shock on prices ($10 for pot stickers?? Okay, maybe I'm out of touch ) BUT the food was so DELICIOUS!!! Have to eat all the things when eating Asian food. Sooooo... we ordered the egg drop soup, the hubaroo got the hot & sour soup. Both were REALLY good!! The egg drop was flavorful and so velvety. The hot & sour soup had a nice balance between heat and sourness. We also ordered the egg rolls and pot stickers. The egg rolls were nice and crispy with a generous amount of meat and just enough peanut along with the veg. The pot stickers were HUH-YOOGE!! Crispy on one side and tender everywhere else. A generous amount of meat mixture. Maybe a bit greasy but I don't mind the grease. I'm a fiend for chili oil and theirs were flavorful and nicely hot. Their hot mustard was not one of those packets of bright yellow, mustard. I think it must be homemade. A nice amount of horseradish to thoroughly clear the sinuses The sweet and sour sauce also appeared to be homemade and was not overpoweringly sweet. For our mains, I got the chicken garlic, scallion, & rice stone bowl. LOVED the garlic but I would've liked a bit more sauce. It was cool how the rice sizzled. I liked the texture. Hubaroo got the dry chili chicken. Oh. My. LANTA!!! That chicken was fried crispy and seasoned so well -- with what tasted like a bit of, I dunno... curry? Just a tiny bit that it's like whisper and the perfect amount of salt on the back end. Chilis bring the heat-- not too hot either. Just right. I had the hot tea and hub had diet coke. In a can. I ordered ahead via telephone, old school :-) They gave me a time and when I arrived I was greeted and the food was brought out to me in less than 2 minutes. The take out bag was packed very well, the staff was friendly and very hospitable. Inside looks very clean and sanitary, seemed very busy during the lunch rush hour but it seemed like there were still seats available. Had to drive 10 minutes back to work to eat the food and it was still very hot. Provided napkins and cutlery, great presentation and the food was very flavorful. First time here and I am impressed. I was happy they offer drinks (fruit tea, matcha, milk tea, smoothies, and many more). We ordered a matcha latte with strawberry purée and I love it (25% sugar only). This is perfect. My husband got a horchata with boba and lychee jelly. Love the fact that you can adjust sugar in these drinks. Their popcorn chicken is delicious. It was very juicy and tender, outside is crispy but not overly crispy/fried which I love. I've never order mapo tofu with fish before. Usually ground pork goes well with mapo tofu but when I saw adding sole fish is an option, I have to try. It was so good. No regret. Also, we ordered a braised pork belly dish. My husband loves it. Very flavorful and tender. Everything went well with rice. One thing I like is that the menu size is perfect. I've passed by this place so many times on Lake St. before it officially opened and finally had a chance to check it out recently. From the other reviews it seems like it's a more modern sister restaurant of the OG Silver Lake Chinese restaurant. While growing up in the area, Silver Lake has always been old reliable when it came to Americanized Chinese cuisine. While the interior of Silver Lake didn't really excel in aesthetics and ambiance, they gave massive portions for reasonable prices. Five Spice Kitchen seems like an attempt to evolve Silver Lake's hole in the wall Chinese takeout joint reputation into a modern restaurant that provided an more elevated dine-in experience. The menu was along the same lines of other nicer Asian restaurants like TL's Four Seasons or Joy Yees. The majority of the dishes were in the $15-$18 range, which is pretty steep for Chinese food. However, the portions are still pretty generous and there's a clear difference in quality over usual cheap Chinese takeout. There were so many different dishes we wanted to try, so we went a little crazy with ordering. Shumai - An order came with 5 pretty plump pieces of pork and shrimp shumai. They definitely felt hand-made and were surprisingly huge. Seafood Ramen - I always have low expectations ordering ramen from a non-Japanese restaurant, but it was cold and we wanted something piping hot. It was a solid bowl of soup, but not up to ramen standards. The broth had a nice kick, but didn't really have that rich umami flavor burst that I was looking for. The noodles were similar to your usual wavy instant ramen noodles. Definitely not hand-made, and lacked the al dente noodle firmness that I prefer. Dynamite Shrimp - This was a straight up copycat recipe of the bang bang shrimp from Bonefish Grill. Lightly breaded shrimp tossed in a creamy mayo-based sweet/spicy flavor profile. Delicious and surely unhealthy haha. Black peppered garlic beef - This was one of my favorite dishes. The beef itself is just great quality. These were huge chunks of beef rather than thin slices. The outside is almost coated with black pepper and must have been dusted with some corn starch because it formed almost a caramelized crust on the outside. The outside had a nice slight crisp but then the center of the beef pieces were still really tender and juicy. The beef was coated in a slightly sweet and peppery sauce just mixed with a ton of chopped garlic. It's mostly just beef with just a little bit of broccoli around the outside. Beef Chow fun with gravy - I'd take wide rice noodles any day over the usual lo mein. Beef chow fun is always a must get item for me whenever I see it on the menu, and the one here was pretty good. Wide and tender noodles that were slightly sautéed and then mixed with a savory and garlicky sauce. On top of that, the cuts of beef were thick cuts of entrée quality meat instead of the usual scrap filler pieces you typically see. Make sure to get the gravy version instead of the dry chow fun. Crunchy garlic shrimp - This is a great dish for garlic lovers. It consists of lightly breaded shrimp mixed with some chopped chilis. Then on top they rained down little bits of fried chopped garlic all over each piece. This is another must get dish. Yang Chow Fried Rice - I'm glad we went with the Yang Chow fried rice over the classic. It was mostly meat instead of the usual fillers and wasn't overly salty. Sometimes fried rice could be a little greasy and heavy on the soy sauce, but this version of fried rice had a nice balance where the flavor of the shrimp/pork/chicken really shined. For dessert, they also had a wide menu of cloud teas. I got the matcha cloud tea. It was pretty light on matcha flavor and the cup was deceivingly tall, so you didn't actually get much when you consider how much ice is in there. I'd get dessert somewhere else next time. Overall, the food at Five Spice Kitchen was great all-around. It's a good option when you wanna eat out on the weekend and don't wanna just bring the food home. The bill was a bit pricier than you'd expect when you're simply trying to satisfy your crave, so it probably won't be one of my go to places to get my Chinese food fix. But we'll definitely be back and it's a great addition to the area. read more

First time here and came later, around late 8-early 9 in the evening. Promptly greeted and seated and ordered. Ordered the Taiwanese popcorn chicken, soup, spicy miso ramen, mapo tofu with ground beef and beef pan fried noodles. All came out within 15-20 minutes. The popcorn chicken was... amazing. Soup was great, mapo tofu was pretty decent, all had great flavor. The only slight gripe is the ramen and pan fried noodles were both extremely salty. To the point I had to dump in 1/2 a cup of water (split between the two) just to water it down. I am not sure if they made a mistake here but it was just so freaking salty. Still tasted decent but in hindsight I should have said something to the waitress.. With that said, the busboy or helper of sorts, some young kid - maybe just in high school, kept checking on me too, as did the waitress all on her own. Management came by too and it just seemed they asked almost every five minutes how everything was. They were genuine though, maybe I was a new face, or that's just how it was? Either way, the service here is excellent. That young kid even got a bonus tip from me. He really did great especially at his age. Overall, would I come here again? Sure, I may just tell the waiter/waitress that to caution the salt first because the prior time was a bit much. The bubble/jelly tea is VERY good as well. After a failed attempt at trying Five Spice Kitchen, we drove out again the following day. This time I called in advance to confirm it was open. It was very busy when we went, so we weren't greeted or seated. I had to ask someone how it worked, and we were then directed to a table and given menus. This didn't bother me because I could tell there was a staff shortage. The dining area kind of felt like a cafeteria; it was open and the sound travelled a bit too much, so it was rather loud during busy time. The menu had a good selection of vegetarian and seafood items, making it difficult to settle on just a couple. We ended up ordering Thai sweet chili & garlic fish and Malaysian style chow fun w/ shrimp. We also ordered a mango coconut lover smoothie. As for the food, wow! Both dishes were excellent. The serving sizes were generous. The fish was delicious. It was nice to see a fish dish using something other than tilapia. The noodle dish was also great. They didn't skimp on the shrimp like some other restaurants do. We had leftovers for both dishes. The only real flaw was the smoothie. The menu specifically says "fresh mango and coconut with cloud cream". It did have fresh (though not ripe) mango mixed with ice, but that seemed to be about it. I didn't taste any coconut, and there was absolutely no cloud cream (that is, cheese foam w/ sea salt). I asked the lady about it and she gave some explanation, but unfortunately I couldn't understand due to the accent. We stopped in to try the bubble tea and ordered lunch carry out because we couldn't resist the wonderful smells coming from the kitchen. My kids ordered smoothies and fruit teas, but they drank them so fast I couldn't snap a picture. Once we got home everyone shared their dishes and we loved them all. The dumplings were filled with meat, no skimping. Lots of variety in the bento box. All the meats were tender and flavorful. The food tasted fresh, not greasy like some places can be. And to think this used to be a dental office. I'm always on the lookout for new bubble tea places, which Five Spice fits. Going to the webpage, I was surprised to see that it was something from Silver Lake! We'd always make it a point to eat in at Silver Lake every couple of months or so, although at this point it's been a while. The menu tilts decidedly pan-Asian, which is a risky bet. Since I can't sample everything on the menu, though, I went for something that just sounded good--the Korean Beef Short Rib Bowl. At $17 it's pretty pricey; throw in a $6 bubble tea and you're talking about a $30 lunch. Thing is, they give you enough food to share for two, so the bowl for $8 per person isn't awful. The other thing is, the bowl was so good, I ate it all anyway. It's short ribs on plain steamed rice; with each rib cut super narrow and covered in a super flavorful cornstarch-thickened saucy glaze. The meat itself was beefy and tender. And again, there was plenty of it. Great job. I also picked up a Silky Mango bubble tea, which is mango, uber-creamy goodness, and mango poppin' boba. Whatever the creamy goodness is (milk and... something else?) went perfectly with the mango. I loved it, and I would definitely get another bubble tea from here in the future. The sooner, the better. After trying restaurants in the city we live in, we noticed that we did not find our favorite Chinese restaurant yet. This restaurant opens at 11:30am for lunch, and we tried 2 lunch set menus this time. Our orders: Broccoli stir-fry Mongolian chicken Jasmin tea cloud cream Brown sugar oolong milk tea Lunch sets come with a fried egg roll, a choice of soup, and chicken fried rice. We chose one egg drop soup and one sweet & sour soup. Egg drop soup was classic. They served what I imagined. Enjoyable, hot, and properly seasoned. Sweet and sour soup was a little too bland for my taste, but to be honest I usually don't choose sweet and sour soup, so I should not say much about it. Egg roll was hot and crispy. Some noodle inside was a surprise and had a good effect for the texture. The dip sauce was fruity sauce (maybe apricot?) and horseradish-y mustard. I liked the mustard one a lot. Good punch in flavor and wakes you up for afternoon activity. But be careful, it is STRONG. If you take too much, it punchers your nose and makes you cry. I loved it! The both entrees came in a large bowl with a bed of chicken fried rice. Mongolian chicken has a spicy soy based flavor. It had a little too much onions more than chicken, but I liked the salty taste. You can choose the spicy level of this bowl from mild, medium or spicy. I chose mild, and it was spicy enough for me. Broccoli stir-fry come with sticky chicken based flavor sauce. It was a gentle flavor but still stands strong against the Mongolian sauce. I like this one slightly better than Mongolian one. Chicken fried rice on the bottom of the bowls were calculated to complement the entrees flavors. It was already mixed with the main flavor, so I cannot taste the rice alone, but I ended up liking the both bowls more after I ate them with the rice. Brown sugar oolong tea has a good bitterness and little sweetness on the bottom. I felt it was a little lacking of brown sugar flavor. It matched well with strong soy flavored sauce though. Jasmin tea cloud cream was more balanced with bitterness and sweetness. And the cloud cream was yummy. It is caffeinated, so good to try in the late morning or early afternoon. We actually came here when it opened a year ago. Back then, I did not write a review because most of our foods were lack of flavors. This time, I liked everything I ate. Constantly more than 4 stars for each item. Probably broccoli stir-fry lunch and horse radish mustard are the meal of the day for me. My total score this time was 4.5 stars.
