We ate at China Cottage last night. It has been awhile since we have eaten there. It was not very good. The meat in my dish - combination chow mien the meat was very weird and stringy. Best Chinese food - hands down. You know how when you go to a Chinese restaurant and you order something like cashew chicken and it arrives full of mushrooms, carrots or celery? Well, not here! When you order a main dish at China Cottage, you get exactly what you ordered and not fillers. My cashew chicken was full of chicken and nuts. It was served piping hot. Soup was okay. Eggroll was excellent, but small. Cream cheese ragoons were excellent. I am not Chinese, but I know Chinese food and this is excellent. Atmosphere was very nice. read more

Unfortunately, I have to give this place 2 stars. The decor is clean and interesting. Our waiter was extremely helpful. It's just that the food was terrible. The beef over rice noodles had WAY too much MSG and the tofu dish had WAY too much white pepper. Although the Peking duck was ok, the skins had a weird sour smell/taste to it. When we asked for Hoisin sauce, they didn't even know what it was. I hadn't eaten lunch, so I was excited to pig out of a well recommended Chinese food restaurant, but I ended up not being able to swallow anything. Seriously seriously terrible. I have been going to different ones of these for years. that is because my wife likes their hot and sour soup. I personally find all their menues be it chicken, beef, pork or shrimp are all alike. No curry or shrimp fried rice or egg foo young. food is always hot but Nothing to yell about. recently they quit supplying the chicken wings and now no fried won ton with crab meat, and also prices have gone up. extremely friendly people once you get to know them but I am not there because of friendly people. China cottage offers Asian cuisine for both Asian and American Chinese eaters. I prefer the Asian style with less "sugar". The Asian menu on the back also has English titles. The food seems very fresh and is always good. I return as often as i can. I can say I love both this and the Springboro locations. The ambiance is very chinese including the TV's. read more

It's a shame. This has been my favorite restaurant for close to twenty years. Unfortunately, this last visit will probably be my last. The food was not good. We ordered Mongolian lamb and a scallop dish both off the Chef's Specials menu. The sauce for the scallops was very tasty and while the scallops were cooked perfectly they were also full of grit and as a result not pleasant to eat. The Mongolian dish was simply not good and lacked any flavor. The appetizer we ordered was also likewise devoid of any enjoyable flavors and poorly prepared. read more

China Cottage is my favorite restaurant in the area. The food is outstanding and the service is excellent! When I am in the area I like to visit China Cottage as much as possible. When you first walk in the restaurant looks beautiful inside and out. But, unfortunately the food is terrible. The food comes in large quantities but lacks a lot of flavor. In addition, it is also cold. I wish it would have been so much better but the quality is just not worth the price. The food is quite good. There was a lot of snow on their sidewalks going into the restaurant. I am disabled and had to climb through the snow to enter the restaurant. When I mentioned it to the woman who seated us, she laughed and said it was too cold to go out and shovel the snow and that it was already done once in the morning! What if I would have fallen? China Cottage used to be a great Chinese restaurant. We stopped gong to the Far Hills restaurant due to poor tasting food particularly take out. We just ordered from the Wilmington Pike store and it was really awful. The food was tasteless and the order was wrong. The woman who took the order acted as though I was bothering her. The Springboro store is still very good. Folks, you need to do something to improve your restaurants. I will not be going to the Wilmington Pike or Far Hills stores anytime soon. read more

As a native Chinese, I have to say the food that China cottage serves may be closest to the "authentic" Chinese food around Dayton area. Try to order dishes on their traditional Chinese menu. If you are not sure what you are looking at, try to find a Chinese waiter or waitress for their opinions.The stir fired dishes, like Kung Pao Chicken is pretty good. Each single piece of chicken is wrapped with tasteful sauce made from wet potato starch, which keeps the chicken very tender inside. My favorite is pretty simple: "Beef flank" plus "Garlic Sauce Eggplant". They may offer you different feelings from beef and eggplants cooked in American ways. read more

I have been a patron of the China Cottage for over twenty five years. (Wow, I'm getting old). The last two times the food has been just average. Tonight however, it was just bad. I ordered Pork low mein. It was way too saucey but had very little flavor. My daughter ordered the Vegetable Fried Rice. It was also underwhelming. Gluey and had no flavor. The service was also poor. Although the waiter was nice, he was not attentive. In fact, I had to go find him to ask for a new wonton soup (The wontons were cold). This restaurant in my mind, has fallen from the pinnacle of Chinese restaurants in Dayton. I will no longer go out of my way to go there. read more

So we've been here before and this was the worse experience we've had. our server Ae-cha sat us on the only tabl without a glass top (there were many open tables!). I didn't realize until later why it felt kind of sticky and gross. One of us ordered something and had a misubderstanding with combination meaning combine two or something else, when we looked back at the menu one of us said "oh, ok, sorry I thought combination meant.... and she cut us off and said very dryly "you thought what?". Very rude. The fried rice wasn't very fried and had too much pepper and the lo mein noodles were *too* soft (overcooked). We were waiting for her to come around and ask us for boxes for a while and when we got the check to sign she hung around until we were done and began cleaning our table and one of us hadn't let go of the pen (we hadn't gotten up or gathered our things) and she said dryly, again "can I have my pen back?" It's a good thing that there is not a minus star. Been eating there for years and it gets worse and worse every time. Spring roll are never made fresh and half of the time the're hardly warm. Anyways got the chicken with vegetables and it was nasty. We were sharing so there were more than me who said it was bad. they charged us for the soup and spring rolls and I thought they should have compted us for the whole meal but they are not the most sociable people. 5/14/14: When I called to place a carry out order today at the China Cottage in Springboro, I was told to hurry up with my order because they were very busy. I was then hung up on. When I went in to pick up my order, I had to wait what seemed like forever. This used to be one of my favorite Chinese restaurant. Very good Chinese food. Nicer than the average Chinese restaurant. It is one of the only Chinese places I actually prefer to eat at versus carrying out. The only negative is that it is usually very crowded, but that is to be expected when it is the best Chinese around. read more

We ordered half a roast duck for takeout the other night, expecting some juicy delicious duck meat. Opening the takeout box at home, we were surprised to find disgusting sight: pieces of shriveled bones with some skin attached. The duck meat (if it could be so called) looked as if it had been fried over and over until it became jerky. And they had the heart to take 15 dollars from us. Something to consider. read more

This visit made me sad- I had good memories of going there as a child. When I looked around the dining room at all the interesting decorations, there was thick dust and creeping crud in a thick layer over everything. I ordered the Cottage Chicken (orange Chicken). The orange peels were burnt and crispy and tasted bitter. The quality of the chicken was horrible - lots of inedible chewy bits. The "Fried Rice" was just yellow in color with not much else in it besides rice. We were there around 3:00, right between lunch and dinner, but that should not change the quality of the food.
